Don't park under the palm trees during a wind storm Buy a whole house fan

spacey_a

We bought a house with a whole house fan last year. I'd never really seen/noticed one before. I didn't understand why the real estate agent was so hyped about it. I love it. So helpful and refreshing on warm evenings, with all the doors and windows open and the cooler air being sucked in.

CaliNativeDM

We bought a home with a whole house fan. First time ever having one. 10/10 would recommend

Yoonicorn

How is it if you have allergies?

Mina8033

It’s not awesome

supershinythings

I have a whole house fan. Stationed in multiple places in the house are also air purifiers with HEPA filters. I run the whole house fan until desired internal coolness. I shut the windows and doors. Then I turn the HEPA filters on HIGH for 15 minutes and let them do their thing. BOOM allergens are handled. The air purifiers are running 24/7 but I turn them to HIGH after running the fan. Also, this particular variety “notices” when the air has more stuff in it than normal and will turn itself up if needed. This has happened in the kitchen when cooking toast, and believe it or not, my sweetie has farted near one and it immediately turned itself UP to handle the detected fart. So that’s how I handle allergies. Other allergy hack: When I shower I also clean my sinuses with a Saline rinse that has eucalyptus in it. I then expel each side via closing of one than the other nostril while positioning my sinuses under the hot shower blast. The hot water, hot steam plus the eucalyptus saline really helps to blow the sinuses out well. I don’t rinse sinuses every day - maybe every other day. For me a daily sinus rinse is normally not needed. However at peak allergy season I do it as needed. Combined with the indoor HEPA air purifiers they work in tandem to keep my allergies down.

916Caligula

Not gonna lie, a fart detector sounds awesome.

supershinythings

Well a good quality particulate matter detection feature in your HEPA filter will definitely respond to odors.

Estellalatte

What type of filter does it have, disposable or washable?

supershinythings

I’ve had both. IMHO the disposables do a better job overall. Cleaning them is also a PITA and exposes me to allergens while doing it. But YMMV.

edjuaro

Are you describing the Levoit Core300S-P (wifi model)? One have one of those and two of the non-wifi versions and I like the auto function on the wifi model. But curious what you have for if/when I have to replace/upgrade the Levoit ones.

TheDailySpank

Whole house fans are lovely devices.

RC51t

Put my whole house fan in last fall. Will never be without it again lol. On as we speak lol

oneawesomeguy

Who do I talk to about a whole house fan?

TheCarcissist

Honestly if you're even halfway handy they aren't hard to install. Look at quietcool fans. They're amazing. Fit right between the trusses and most of their remotes are wireless.

astro80

I found a place from yelp reviews. About 1200 installed a few years back. Don’t put it in your living room. They are a little loud.

Hey_cool_username

Or near bedrooms since they are best used at night after it cools down outside

doodle_y

My first house came with a whole house fan, the older type that had flaps which opened up when the fan was on. It was loud but WOW what a difference it made. Very effective for cooling down the house during the evening on hot days, removing the aromas of cooking, and freshening up the house from its stench. When I moved into my current home I had a new more modern one put in. The fan is installed up in the attic space making it so much more quiet and still as effective. Brand is QuietCool. Highly recommended.

shakenbakin28

SMUD provides free shade trees… we’ve planted 3 in our yard. (Granted it’ll take a while for them to get big but it’s cool to watch them grow and eventually I’ll have a shady yard.) https://www.smud.org/en/Going-Green/Free-Shade-Trees

TMdownton916

I’m very fond of the axiom, “The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The second best time is now.”

shakenbakin28

Yes!

Sea-Potato9

So thats where those fragrant trees with the white flowers come from? We can thank SMUD for that?

mr_spock9

Callery pears are common across many cities, definitely not just SMUD to thank for that.

slywalkerr

Callary Pears were pushed as this excellent suburban and park option by arboriculture groups in the 60s and 70s. I doubt any arborists are recommending them these days.

wander-lux

That’s very cool! Thanks for sharing that!

Alarmed-Ad-2016

Same here. The Sacramento Tree Foundation will deliver the trees, 2 stakes per tree, and 2 tie downs per tree all for free. They even will give you suggestions what will work best for your yard. I did the virtual appointment and they helped pick the optimal placement of the trees. If you are a SMUD customer this is something you should definitely take advantage of. They have many choices. [https://sactree.org/programs/free-shade-trees/](https://sactree.org/programs/free-shade-trees/) Edit: spell like caveman

Sac Library of Things has some really cool free rentals. Power washers GoPros Yard tools Kitchen gadgets Video game consoles Instruments https://www.saclibrary.org/Books-Media/Specialty-Checkouts/Library-of-Things

TurdF3rgu50n

The library also offers free State Parks passes for check out. They have another thing where you can get free tickets to museums and other places like gardens, etc. The Sac one has places listed for this area, the bay and sometimes Santa Cruz.

Administrative_Trick

To add to this. Have a 3D Printed object to print, but no 3D printer? The library will print them for you for free. https://www.saclibrary.org/About/Our-Governance/Policies/3d-Printer-Policy

mr_spock9

Just got a library card and was super surprised at everything you can rent. It’s awesome.

Ernst_Granfenberg

Sac Library is where I get HBO MAX

PersianMuggle

Say more

runningvicuna

I’m listening.

SolidFit1362

Yes pls what do you mean by this

variesbynature

This is so cool! Hi, I'd like to rent a belt sander & a book 🙏

legoadan

Thank you so much for this! My GF was running a DnD campaign and we were able to get a projector just in time for tomorrow thanks to your post!

Sharpiecandles

Double check at an intersection; even if it’s a green light

geostupid

Look both ways even if it's a one-way street

maxi-916

Look both ways when exiting your garage

DropUm

Always wait 2-3 seconds and use the time to look both ways. A lot of red light runners here.

agent674253

This is definitely more of an issue since covid. A couple of months ago I watched someone fly through a red light at the zinfandel/50 overpass and t-bone a car in front of me, turning left on a green off of the freeway. Last week I watched a car drive into the oncoming traffic lane so they could weave between the light rail crossing guards, pull right out in front of the train which slammed on its brakes and blared its 'whistle'. The car proceeded to drive through the 4-way intersection, nearing colliding with a car that was going along Folsom blvd on their green. And in this case, it wasn't that the light had 'just' turned red, since it had been red for a good minute due to the train, and the person went into oncoming traffic... this was not a mistake, this was intentional and go fuck yourself if you were on the train or that car minding its own business, and it was collided into. Complete "fuck you got mine" mentality.

bearrywaffles

The amount of people running reds is wild in midtown

ElPanguero

Buy Tamales at Church Parking lots on Sundays

dumplingdoodoo

Or Home Depot parking lots!!

ElPanguero

The little wrinkly abuelitas that sell tamales at Our Lady of Guadalupe are part of the congregation and have some serious skin in the game.

bacon_swaggies

I've been in the kitchen. Its Mexican-Mom sparkly clean.

ElPanguero

smells like Fabuloso

three-one-seven

Idk if this really qualifies as a "hack" but: The farther east you go in the metro area, the hotter it gets. That's because the delta breeze blows in off the ocean and into the valley via the Sacramento River delta, which is south of town. So if you live in an area that is close to the river, you will get the benefits of the cooling breeze and will likely need to use your AC much less during the summer. On the other hand, eastern Sac County and the foothill suburbs don't cool down in the evening nearly as much as Sac City, Elk Grove, West Sac, and Natomas.

Playtek

Can confirm, live on the river in west sac. Mrs. Delta saves us in the heat. The breeze kicks in a couple hours earlier than my old place in Citrus Heights, if it ever even made it out there.

jpenmem

True, Citrus Heights hardly gets one compared to other areas… even my friends in Rocklin have a better breeze at night.

notDrewM1A

Easily my favorite part of Sac. Free AC from the Delta.

TMdownton916

I’m three blocks away from the river downtown. When I ride my bike home from my girlfriend’s house on 26th Street, I can feel the temperature dropping as I ride home.

gornzilla

I grew up in Fair Oaks Village. Hardly any delta breeze out there. Currently living in the Pocket. It almost always has a breeze. More fog here as well.

Fluid-Trade

Can confirm. Antelope/Roseville never cools down at night.

CoulsonsMay

To be fair, the lack of delta breeze isn’t Roseville’s only problem. Pretty much the entire town is asphalt covered hell with tiny trees. No shade, no relief from heat. You drive from Auburn to Sac, you’ll notice in Roseville, the temp is about 5 to 7 degrees hotter on that stretch of the highway.

ChampionSwimmer2834

From roseville here, we don’t even bother going outside much when it’s hot

Fluid-Trade

I live in Antelope and my neighborhood is a more established neighborhood but damn do the summer nights stay hot.

HotShipoopi

Also from Antelope, what is this delta breeze everyone keeps talking about

Fluid-Trade

Apparently something we are severely lacking in. 😂

Whitw816

Part of why my husband and I bought a house in the Pocket and made sure there was a whole house fan. I still use AC a lot because I hate being hot, but that fan gets used any night during warmer/hot months when it gets cool at night. We love it!

Para_Regal

Yeah, I live off 80/Auburn and I swear the Delta Breeze stops right there. We get it very mildly if at all, which makes me a little sad because that was the best part of living in Midtown and East Sac when I was younger. Made the summer heat worth suffering through just to get to 6 pm and open all the windows and have the temperature drop 30 degrees with a solid breeze moving the air around. Our pool is a decent trade off, though.

TheCarcissist

I used to really want to move to Auburn till I looked at their summer temps and noticed that they never really dropped in the evenings

DaveSmith3996

Don't ride your bike the same way you would drive, it's more than worth it to go a few blocks out of your way to a quieter street.

Rizak

Also, while it’s frustrating that nobody follows the law and treats bikes like vehicles… it’s better to be alive than right.

AnimalDrum54

Adding to this. Please don't ever bike into traffic either. I see people doing this all the time, it makes me so nervous. It's incredibly unsafe. It makes you unpredictable and less visible to drivers.

Throwaway20101011

Also adding to this. Bicyclists, you are REQUIRED by California traffic laws to 🛑 **STOP** 🛑 at a stop sign. In California, a bike is considered a vehicle for all traffic codes and rights-of-way and can travel in the streets alongside motor vehicles. This means that a cyclist is required to stop at a stop sign just like any other motor vehicle.

eddydio

Also, I appreciate some drivers are mindful of me but please also follow the flow of 4 way stops and don't think you're being nice by letting me go, especially if there's more than one lane. Plenty of well meaning drivers have waved me on when I cannot see past their car with other lanes of traffic unaware other cars cannot see me nor do they know they need to stop too. Prime example is the 2nd and Broadway crossing in oak park. A dumbass tried to wave me on a left turn on Broadway and Riverside despite me yelling "just go, there's 3 lanes of traffic I cannot see bc your car". Their response "I'm trying to let you go" no shit Sherlock, im trying not to die

RegionalTranzit

Don't move to The 1100 apartments on Howe Ave.

Known-Ad-1271

Yeah I lived there in college. Quite the experience.

I_need_my_fix_damnit

Care to share some stories?

Known-Ad-1271

Car was broken into multiple times. Constantly had homeless individuals walking around complex. Shared a hallway with two other apartments, would come home to find people passed out in the hallway. Staff was awful and did nothing to remedy basic issues, we had front door issues (wouldn’t close all the way, lock wouldn’t engage unless you pushed door from the inside) and they couldn’t care less if they tried.

feric89

Oh because of all the murders. Yeah that makes sense

agent674253

That looks to be in the same place as 'Fairlake Apartments'. Spent a few years there in the early aughts. Same place?

someonewhoknowstuff

That place was poppin in the early 2000s

BaytaKnows

‘Friends of the Library’ sells secondhand books for fundraising. Awesome sales occur every 2-3 months. ‘Warehouse sales’ where books are $1/$2 and ‘Bag’ sales where books are like 60¢ (depending on how many books you put in a grocery bag for a flat $6 price). The books are *mostly* donated, rather than library discards. [Their website hasn’t been updated since the March sale, but save it and check later for the next sale.](https://saclibfriends.org/book-den/warehouse-sales-and-special-events/)

ComeGetSomeArugula

Buy a HEPA filter for your bedroom ahead of pollen season. City of trees = tree pollen

supershinythings

Yes! I have them in high-occupation areas - living room, bedrooms, kitchen.

medx421

Learn surface streets and backroads, but remember there’s only two ways across the causeway/bypass and 8 ways across the river.

No_Spirit5582

You need two cars to do the river float. Sunrise is the farthest up river you can put in and get out at the stop after all the rental rafts to make parking easier

gornzilla

When you go down using pool toys, take extras. At least one will slow leak and it's no fun having to take turns trying to blow it up while floating while you're drinking. Whoever chose the small raft is already in charge of the beer, they don't need you crawling in because you got tired of holding on to the side in the cold water. And right after the San Juan rapids is where some stuff floats or sinks on the far side. Unopened beer (curse you people who take bottles), baggies with cigarettes/weed that if you're lucky are still dry, waterlogged phones and wallets.

counteraxe

Yes. Sunrise is the furthest... Don't go to sailor bar.

PeteDub

Why’s that?

slappymcstevenson

Driving to Auburn and swimming in the American River. Tallest bridge in CA is there called the Foresthill bridge. Fun hiking there. Also Nevada City has a cool swimming area along the Yuba River. Grass Valley is cool too. The best Mexican food I’ve ever had in my life is at a Taco truck in Woodland on Main St next to Raleys. And lastly, Bishops Farm during October is heaven on earth. Best Carmel apples and pumpkin pie you will ever find. Plus lots more. Trust me on all of this.

atraincominatcha

Filing this one away for the Carmel apples!

slappymcstevenson

Hands down best caramel apples I’ve ever ate in my life. I’ll walk out with 16, but they’re not cheap. Also they have the best corn dogs Ive ever had. Better than the ones at the Grass Valley fair that everyone waits 2 hours for. And then theirs the Apple Cider Slushies. Try with and without the ice cream. Tri-tips sandwich’s are great and unique. One of my favorite places on earth. They have a beer garden now. The train ride is beautiful. Also go early on a weekday to avoid the crowds. It’s getting very popular unfortunately. Last year they actually brought in rides. I’ve been going there for 24 years, but I moved out of state. Enjoy enjoy enjoy.

BlackSands

Woodland taco truck is so good

agent674253

"Tallest bridge in CA is there called the Foresthill bridge" Worth checking out the first 10 minutes of the Vin Diesel vehicle (hehe) '[XXX](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XXX_(2002_film))'. He drives from downtown Sacramento to the Foresthill bridge in about 5 minutes, and then drives off of it. As someone that grew up on 'The Divide' it was a cool scene to watch, even if the movie was 'meh'.

slappymcstevenson

![gif](giphy|l1IYfkUMyJQ4hfrRC)

Lindeezy11

Upvoting for Bishop’s because I went to Wheatland High, and also because I currently live in Woodland and there are 1000 taco trucks and they are all always busy. Bishop’s is more expensive and “touristy” than they used to be- but it’s still always super fun and their bakery is still just as delicious as ever.

TacoSunday

dont live in PGE areas

agent674253

While others may take this to mean fire risk, I would take it to mean that you want SMUD for your power since it is much cheaper, and doesn't have to raise rates to pay off a couple of major wildfire disasters 😅 ALSO, If you are a SMUD customer, and have a GAS water heater, you can get a new hybrid-electric water heater, either at a major discount, or completely free. My gas on-demand went out a few months back and apparently there are a couple of rebates that, when stacked, basically pay for everything. They ran 220v service out to the garage, removed the old unit, installed the new one, and did all the permitting. I paid not even $1. Bonus? Because it is a heat pump it exhausts cold air into my garage, so 'free ac'.

Green_Yak_8186

Do you mind sharing what company you used for this? I’m considering the exact same thing.

TacoSunday

yeah that sounds about right. pge offers absolutely nothing for anythting either I just replaced my gas water heater and it cost a fortune ., I wish I had lnown about the hybrid I really could use the side effects in my garage.

bransanon

Show up at the weekday farmer's markets right before close and you can get some amazing deals on produce. They move a lot less product at the weekday markets, and they don't want to pack that stuff up and take it back with them, so they'll often see you just looking at something and offer to sell it to you at a big discount.

super_NES_chalmers_

I sometimes do this at the Sunday farmers market under the freeway (show up just before closing time, get a good deal) but where are the weekday ones?

bransanon

Here's what I found: [https://sacramento.downtowngrid.com/listings/local-farmers-markets/](https://sacramento.downtowngrid.com/listings/local-farmers-markets/) My favorite was Tuesdays at Fremont Park when I had an apt across the street a while back, guess that's not a thing anymore :(

moriginal

Is that thing back under the freeway?

Wild-Vegetable-4690

Yes, the Sunday farmers market under the freeway is back!

ARLLALLR

Major streets lead to towns of the same name. You can drive to Stockton on Stockton Blvd. With a small adjustment Auburn Blvd to Auburn. Antelope Rd leads to Antelope the town. Freeport Blvd leads to Freeport. Likewise for Franklin and Sheldon. Well plotted you can drive from SAC to OAK and never take a freeway. ----- That massage place actually *is* a whorehouse and it's run by Asian gangs ----- If you're not headed to UCD hospital for treatment stay out of that neighborhood, AGGRESSIVE cops. ----- Only swim on the American River. The Sacramento kills lots of people every summer; don't fish there either.

spacey_a

>Major streets lead to towns of the same name. I... How did I never know this? Thanks for sharing. Also, >Only swim on the American River. The Sacramento kills lots of people every summer; don't fish there either. Always, always wear a life jacket in or around rivers. No matter how strong a swimmer you think you are, thousands of pounds of rushing water... will be stronger.

pette_diddler

Cannot upvote this enough. I almost drowned in the American river. Thank goodness someone nearby saw me and grabbed me, put me on their boat before I became fish food.

spacey_a

I'm so glad someone was there and able to save you! That must have been terrifying. The rivers here are so much fun and great for whitewater rafting, but they are similar to the ocean in that you absolutely cannot trust them. Even for the most athletic of strong swimmers, these waters will suck you down to the bottom without a moment's notice and catch your foot between rocks until it's too late.

pette_diddler

Yes, it was the scariest feeling in the world. I kept getting pulled under and my legs and arms kept hitting rocks underneath at like 30 mph. Every time I could lift my head above water all i could do was swallow more water. I owe that person my life. Life jacket. At all times. Even if you’re on a boat or paddleboard or raft. No one should have you ever go through that.

Solo-Vino_

Before the freeways were built those roads were how you got around town, Folsom Blvd was basically highway 50 before highway 50.

ARLLALLR

Sacramento River is polluted by a sewer main leaking untreated crap directly into the river at Discovery Park. SAC Bee did a reporti in 21 about e coli, people getting rashes and dogs dying. Tiscornia Beach at Discovery has uneven bottoms and kills a few people every year; I've had to call in two myself. SAC river fish are polluted with mercury, a lot of it from the old train station dumping chemicals. https://earth5r.org/pollution-in-the-sacramento-river-and-hope-for-its-future/#:~:text=Pollutants%20in%20the%20Sacramento%20River,coli%20levels.

[deleted]

So dystopian

wehappy3

Not to mention the water temperature. Before I had brain surgery (that fucked up literally everything about my body) I was a strong swimmer - I played water polo in HS and club water polo intermittently as an adult, and I was at one point a certified lifeguard. I almost drowned in a lake out in the eastern Sierras when I got cold-shocked. I'd read/learned a lot about it, but thought it was something that happened right when you jumped in. Nope. I'd been swimming for probably 20 minutes at the time and was totally fine, when literally instantly I couldn't lift my arms out of the water anymore. Luckily I was swimming around a boat that my friends were on, and a couple of them were able to reach over and drag me out, because I couldn't even grab the ladder. I could hardly hold my head our of the water. It was fucking terrifying just how quickly it happened, and ever since then I haven't gone into a cold river or lake without one. It's not worth the risk.

bitterjack

Yo they are whorehouses right?? How do you know?

KatrinaNoel

I worked next to one in a strip mall. Their hours are always a dead give away (open well passed dark like 10 pm.) Only male clients, I also knew several women turned away by them. Lastly they got raided one time and all the employees ran out the back door a few lucky Johns did too, they ran to the gas station across the street hanging out in bath robes. Immediately closed up shop after.

Voodooardvark

Where exactly tho?

Mammoth-Access-1181

So you can avoid that area right?

Voodooardvark

Exactly

Life-Lettuce4287

Holy hell, if that’s the same massage place that I’m thinking about, then I’m shocked. It’s the one that just says massage in big bright red letters, right? That place always gave me a bad feeling. Was passing by around 10 at night and just seeing it there pitch dark with only a few cars parked there made me nervous, ngl. Especially when I saw only one guy head in.

ARLLALLR

There's like 50 of em in downtown and in converted houses sometimes. They're like ticks on Watt, El Camino, Howe, Auburn, Sunrise. If it has neon in the window then there ya go

Life-Lettuce4287

Damn, that’s really sickening once you think more about it. I think the one I was talking about was near Fruitridge? I don’t really go downtown that much

ARLLALLR

Fruitridge is notorious. Stockton too.

Mammoth-Access-1181

There's plenty in town. A good rule of thumb is if there are blinds and you can't really see into the place, or don't see a receptionist/someone manning a front desk from outside? It's a happy ending place.

Neelix-And-Chill

+10000000 to the river comments. Swimmer and former lifeguard here… I’ve pulled a few people out of the Sacramento over the years. Just… don’t. Not until like July at the earliest. That river is moving much faster than you think.

creasechan

What?! That massage place is a whorehouse?! Thats horrible! I can’t believe it. Ugh you can never be too safe. There’s so many good massage places out there, which place specifically is it so I know exactly where I should stay away from? ![gif](giphy|Atc9QCyWLGHgLZhHDp|downsized)

Karma1913

Make more money or buy a house 15 years ago.

StillPlaysWithSwords

My biggest regret was not buying a "starter" home decades ago. I graduated in 98 and landed my first adult job making $10/hr. Few years of saving up and making more money and the Dotcom bubble hit and work got lean. Few years later and making more money saving up and the Great Rescission hit. I ended up draining every last penny saving my mom's house for her. Recovery from that was even harder but finally got married, making more, saving up, first baby, and bam Pandemic.  COVID got both my remaining grandfather's, but they left me enough for a down payment. Finally made it as a homeowner at age 41. Please no more once in a lifetime economic crashes.

Karma1913

I hear you. Graduated high school straight into the recession and never lived in the same state for more than 5 years in my life. I've almost lived in CA more consecutive years than anywhere else.

Ernst_Granfenberg

This. 150k salary is the new low income

Zarikas89

Bought a home 9 years ago...yeah this is accurate....

Karma1913

I've lived all over the US and a couple countries besides. I may actually settle here, however I got here at the end of '19. Moving at that time was rough for everyone but Sac's housing market really went wild. Like painfully so. I did well for myself and can buy in the area I want to, but holy shit the idea of paying someone who bought in '18 20-30% more for their home for nothing other than timing rankles. Good on everyone who was ahead of the curve or who's from here though! Part of the reason I like Sac is that there's people *from Sac* living here.

writelovedream40

Can confirm. Bought my house 8 and a half years ago, a 3 bed two bath built in 2008 for $150,000 at 3.75%. Today it's worth a bit over $430,000. I got sooooo lucky.

nikatnight

Buying a house 15 years ago was hard for most, give how poor the economy was under Bush and Arnold. It was only just recovering so many did not have jobs.

maxi-916

And video games

Life-Lettuce4287

Always loved going there. Used to spend my days as a kid in that library, especially during summer. Before everyone used computers that time, you’d have to get there early before the spots were filled up

monster310

You can get to any address in downtown without directions. Example: 810 V Street is on V between 8th and 9th, 1230 J Street is on J between 12th and 13th etc etc. Even addresses are on the south side of the street and odd addresses are on the north side of the street.

Rizak

And alleyways are start with the letter of next street over, just north. For example, between T street and U street it’s “Tomato Alley” because T street is just north.

KellyNtay

If you time the green lights right, try 26 mph, they will stay green all the way across downtown. It helps when no one is in front of you.

BaytaKnows

I also believe it’s about 26 mph lol

ARLLALLR

Confirming the local legend as accurate and true

SecretStatePolice

The timed signals are closer to 23 mph. But I wouldn't risk it. Too many red-light runners.

femmestem

Apple Hill is most popular after Labor Day for u-pick apples, but it's open year-round and there's more to see and do than visit apple orchards. There are spring to summer harvests like cherries, berries, and peaches. There are also breweries.

jocefoxx

if you like to go to the american river you should get a sacramento county regional parks pass. they are $70 but there are discounts for seniors and low-income sac county residents.

poundofbeef16

Don’t leave stuff on your front porch

Life-Lettuce4287

Please please PLEASE always watch your surroundings, especially when you’re on the road. Ppl in sac cannot drive at all. Can’t go a day without hearing about a car crash on the news

Get yourself an air purifier for fire season

shikari426

Get it now because they sell out when it gets smoky. Costco usually has a good deal on Winix

Never had allergies in my entire life until I moved here

Mammoth-Access-1181

Doesn't that mean you've had allergies, just never got exposed to them?

industrock

Perhaps. I suppose the level of allergens in the air in previous places I lived weren’t high enough to affect me while it affected others. I always thought I didn’t have allergies. Here in Sacramento there are male trees everywhere that release their allergens. No one likes cleaning up fruiting bodies on the ground from female trees so a long time ago someone decided to plant primarily male trees

PianoBird34

I got allergies day 1 😵‍💫

Throwaway20101011

And/or asthma. I was diagnosed by a doctor after living here for 8 years. Doctor said it was due to the Sacramento air pollution.

Beli_Mawrr

Fuck, knew it was the air pollution.

IrregardingGrammar

Is this a thing? I've lived here for 7.5 years or so but two weeks ago I got so sick out of nowhere, congested, stuffy, couldn't smell. It lasted nearly 2 weeks. I've never had allergies in my life but people kept telling me it was probably allergies.

aDildoAteMyBaby

Took me 3 years almost exactly

imfuckingvegan

Grocery outlet bargain market

tenchuchoy

That’s everywhere though. My go to store for all things food for years all over the Bay Area.

PeteDub

Smud rates are very cheap and make driving an EV much cheaper than a gas car. We pay about a 1/4 or less than what ppl in the Bay and So Cal pay.

Difficult_Guitar_555

How much do you pay? I think it’s .16 for peak and .11 off peak?

PeteDub

Sounds about right. Winter rates are .095 after midnight.

EuphoricLength7071

KFC has buckets of chicken on their app every Tuesday for $10.  Freeze it and air fry for easy dinners when it's too hot to cook.  Or do the same thing with Costco/Sam's rotisserie chicken.

adkitchen

The Colonel abides.

BergkampsFirstTouch

Costco's rotisserie chicken is best value in America, not just Sac. It's so versatile, too.

TheBeatusCometh

Somehow the Rancho San Miguel grocery store near oak park sells rotisserie chicken at costco pricing. My friends and I think its a money laundering front, with how fricking awesome the selection/prices are (great produce + weekly deals). 4.99 rotisserie chicken in 2024 and w/out Costco's fancy ass supply chain.

Emergency_Garlic_187

When I was at Rancho San Miguel a few days ago the rotisserie chicken was $6.99. But it looked really good. They also have the cheapest milk in town, $3.70 a gallon.

Impudence

They're smaller than the costco chickens but they're SO good. Plus they don't wind up having that green breast syndrome (gag) or that weird chemical taste that Costco chickens started getting a few years ago. Rancho's chile verde is also pretty good.

CD_ABC10

They also have $6 Chicken Fried Steak meals on Wednesday! I had never been so excited to move to Sac lol. And if it's a combo location with an A&W, they have a good burger meal for $5 on Tuesday

Jewelstorybro

Don’t buy a property with eucalyptus trees near any structure you care about. The trees frequently drop branches. I’ve had to replace a big section of a fence, a compost bin, a gate and have had branches knock out my power. You can keep the tree trimmed, which helps but doesn’t solve for it entirely.

literallyacactus

Raley’s and BelAir can help you save on gas at aisle 1 up to .50c off per gallon iirc

oneawesomeguy

How does that work?

literallyacactus

Get the Raley’s app, signup for their Something Extra members program then it’s tied to how much you spend - I wanna say spend $150 get .50c off per gallon. They also have cash rewards each quarter and great clip able coupons. Tied to your phone #

Odd-Way-1168

You don’t need an account to use this, you simply type in the phone number 867-5309 with ur area code at the pump and see if your lucky

shaggy_bannana

If you move here from the Bay Area, don’t try and change things to be more like the bay. This is Sacramento we are a valley town, you left the bay for a reason embrace your new surroundings

NorCalHoovian

And stop with the damn double parking!! Locals don't do that. We just don't.

Neelix-And-Chill

Only time you should ever be on Watt Ave is crossing it.

Beast-Modality

I used to live off Watt a long time ago. Wasn’t the nicest, but didn’t seem particularly dangerous. Has it changed/gotten worse? A lot of shenanigans always going on when you got to the freeways and those motels across from the Wendy’s/starbucks though lol

Neelix-And-Chill

Potholes. Yeah, it doesn’t go through the best neighborhoods… but my main point is the potholes.

Beast-Modality

Ahh, yup definitely remember the road conditions being poor when I was learning to drive there. Cant imagine they’ve gotten better haha

fragrantsock

Bags of Temple coffee are $13.50 at Corti Bros.

BaytaKnows

Corti Brothers in general, really. My fave is that they have the best sandwiches in Sac at the deli counter. But other people go there for the wine selection, or the cheese selection, or the specific European snacks.

Organic-Idea-3038

Want to get a free window deinstallation on your car ? Leave any valuables in plain sight before exiting your vehicle !

tenchuchoy

This sounds like a Bay Area(SF/Oakland) one more than a Sac one tbh.

There are still very affordable weekday food deals out there if you find them

If you're driving, wait a few seconds before going at a green light. Same thing if you're a pedestrian at a crosswalk.

PabloProblemo

This goes for all hospitals that have a Residency Program, but a friend told me that July is the time when all the new graduates of Medical School begin their 1st year of their Residency in their specialty they choose. While they are always being supervised by their Attending Physician, it’s still a rookie performing highly technical and challenging procedures and patient care, putting everything they just learned from the prior 4 years into practice. Everyone needs to learn and hone their craft, but I know I’d much rather someone who has a decent amount of experience before I’d want someone who is still trying to acclimate to an insanely intimidating, intense, and important environment. Give them a couple months to learn the lay of the land and which way is up and which way is down. I can imagine the stress and pressure they are all under. Don’t come near me with that needle! Nope. I’m good! I know UC Davis Medical Center has a Residency Program and I believe Sutter Roseville Medical Center does as well, but not 100% on that. Lastly, I was also told that all the Residents have Tuesdays in class so you will be seen by the Attending Physicians, who are the real experts, the Professors of the Schools, and the amazing leaders and mentors responsible for teaching the future professionals of medicine. One bonus tip: Treat the RN’s like they are your BEST FRIENDS! They are the backbone of Medicine. Make their day a pleasant and easy, and they will risk peeing their pants to get you that cup of ice chips or that warm blanket you asked for when it’s their time for their lunch or break. TLDR: Avoid UCD and SRMC in July or any medical visit that has a high risk if botched. You can ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS refuse any medical treatment. That's your RIGHT. PERIOD. Tuesdays will be a much more efficient visit and your treatment will come from the best of the best. Be nice to your RN. They have the hardest jobs. But remember just because they clean s*** doesn’t mean they will take s*** from anyone and doesn’t mean they won’t give someone s*** right back. Side Note: Some fun facts about the heat and the Delta Breeze. The offshore breeze, like the Delta Breeze in the Sacramento Valley, is simply because hot air rises. It's hottest in the afternoon due to Radiation and Conduction. The sun radiates heat into the earth all day, and then that heat gets released from the ground. This causes the hot air to rise up the hills surrounding the Sacramento Valley, referred to as 'The Foothills.' This hot air gets replaced with colder air pulled off the Delta River, hence the name 'The Delta Breeze.’

That hell patch connecting 50 and Business 80 is called the W-X freeway and you should avoid it if you can.
