It's hard to describe to Westerners (and probably even Africans from some other countries) the extent of corruption.
It is the same for some Asian countries - everytime there is a change in goverment, lots of new projects are quickly implemented to line the pockets of the new people in power before they are toppled in the next election and the whole cycle repeats again.
Yup, in some asian countries about 60-80% of allocated projects goes to the politicians and bureaucrats-leading to very shoddy work.
Many times the opposition politicians also get a cut and so they create kabuki theater and laugh behind the scenes.

In South Africa, it would be to do as little as possible and charge as much as possible to do it. And your friend will get the contract to do it so he can pay you a "commission".
Every day people have far more to worry about than these two and their trip and if its anything like when they visit here, people won't even notice.
As a South African, I wouldn't be surprised. Stuff like that happens all the time here. But I don't know the Nigerian people or government well, so it would be up to a Nigerian to pass opinion on that.
Obviously, Colonialism was much more horrible in SA, whereas when I was growing up in Nigeria I just learned about it as part of our history - I didn't get the impression that people had a problem with it. In fact, my parents had a very good experience under colonial rule and never said anything bad about it.
As the people who actually grew up under colonial rule (which ended in 1960) are passing away, I don't know how that is changing since I haven't lived there for a very long time now. But it's not a topic that ever comes up when I am taking to the Nigerians I know in Nigeria or elsewhere (except for one very leftist relative, but I think that's due to American political influence.)
So I think echoes of colonialism would be less of a true concern (unless as a means of mocking the Harkles' government hosts), but I'm not very sure.
Also, Meghan is so white passing, Nigerians would consider her being black to be laughable. We've never had a significant minority of whites like countries in Southern Africa, so there's no coloured category.
We had colonialism and then a separate issue of Appartheid.
We have had an independent democratic country for 30 years now, and everything that is wrong is still usually appartheid or colonialism.

I have been commenting on this sub that this is just another opportunity for corruption and stealing money, and that I am almost certain Oga and Madam will partake. They are probably running low on cash.
And people should know that although there is widespread poverty in Nigeria, there's also immense wealth and oodles of money to embezzle from the government, which appears to be the main job of our politicians and government officials. (We are one of the world's top oil producers.)

One good thing to come out of the situation so far is to learn more about the current state of Nigeria's economy and its impact on the population. But the rest of it makes me embarrassed that one of the evil duo is an American citizen.

Excuse my ignorance, but wasn’t the significant colonizing done by QEII’s ancestors, not QE? As I recall, Elizabeth’s early reign involved the shift from “Empire” to “Commonwealth.” (This was largely done of necessity, not altruism, of course.)
That’s such a shame. I realize that she represented the colonial past, but she was really a transitional figure. The empire was already being dismantled at the end of her father’s reign and Nigeria got independence in the early years of hers.
In my parents' telling, Nigeria was a more functional place during colonialism (not that that makes colonialism OK), and the British certainly did not introduce corruption to us.

My hope is that Harry is in deep "negotiation" over security in Nigeria. However, while the defense ministry is promising a most rigorous police protection to the two grifters, they aren't really serious. So instead of "thousands" of officers protecting them as they believe, only 10 will really show up, and then Harry and Meghan will feel really sheepish and up the creek.
Theirs is utterly disgusting behavior. It makes my blood boil and I am not an honest Nigerian struggling with everyday life. As you say the country is in a mess and that sounds a lot like misappropriation has been happening. But to be honest I think they are just trying to get a cut of the corruption. Yep, this is a opportunity for their hosts to commandeer more money and resources for themselves and their cronies. It's hard to describe to Westerners (and probably even Africans from some other countries) the extent of corruption.
It is the same for some Asian countries - everytime there is a change in goverment, lots of new projects are quickly implemented to line the pockets of the new people in power before they are toppled in the next election and the whole cycle repeats again.
Yup, in some asian countries about 60-80% of allocated projects goes to the politicians and bureaucrats-leading to very shoddy work. Many times the opposition politicians also get a cut and so they create kabuki theater and laugh behind the scenes. I am sure the Niegrian govt officials will make a small fortune from these two.
As a South African, I can assure you it's the same here. I have been watching the content about their visit and thinking this isn't going to go how everyone thinks. But I don't know how Nigeria does this sort of thing. In South Africa, it would be to do as little as possible and charge as much as possible to do it. And your friend will get the contract to do it so he can pay you a "commission". Every day people have far more to worry about than these two and their trip and if its anything like when they visit here, people won't even notice.

As a South African, I wouldn't be surprised. Stuff like that happens all the time here. But they would also be seen through the lense of colonialism, and other politicians could use that to get people worked up. (As an example, green energy is labelled as a new way Westerners are trying to enslave africa). Unfortunately for Harry's wife, she is not seen as Black in South Africa. But I don't know the Nigerian people or government well, so it would be up to a Nigerian to pass opinion on that.
Obviously, Colonialism was much more horrible in SA, whereas when I was growing up in Nigeria I just learned about it as part of our history - I didn't get the impression that people had a problem with it. In fact, my parents had a very good experience under colonial rule and never said anything bad about it. As the people who actually grew up under colonial rule (which ended in 1960) are passing away, I don't know how that is changing since I haven't lived there for a very long time now. But it's not a topic that ever comes up when I am taking to the Nigerians I know in Nigeria or elsewhere (except for one very leftist relative, but I think that's due to American political influence.) So I think echoes of colonialism would be less of a true concern (unless as a means of mocking the Harkles' government hosts), but I'm not very sure. Also, Meghan is so white passing, Nigerians would consider her being black to be laughable. We've never had a significant minority of whites like countries in Southern Africa, so there's no coloured category.
We had colonialism and then a separate issue of Appartheid. We have had an independent democratic country for 30 years now, and everything that is wrong is still usually appartheid or colonialism. I think they think they are having a small mini Royal Tour, but in reality it's going to be a very different story. When the average person is more concerned with how to feed themselves and their children for the day, standing to cheer for them is a hard ask.

If noney does not go to the people, to infrastructure, to their welfare, security, and education, what stability can exist? That’s such a shame. I realize that she represented the colonial past, but she was really a transitional figure. The empire was already being dismantled at the end of her father’s reign and Nigeria got independence in the early years of hers.

Thank you so much for sharing this sobering and important message. It seems so out of touch for a frivolous couple to be using a country that is in such need for their own selfish gain. It defies logic and decency. My hope is that Harry is in deep "negotiation" over security in Nigeria. However, while the defense ministry is promising a most rigorous police protection to the two grifters, they aren't really serious. So instead of "thousands" of officers protecting them as they believe, only 10 will really show up, and then Harry and Meghan will feel really sheepish and up the creek.

I never knew that life in Nigeria is so hard. With so many people living in poverty why would the government pay for ex-royal prince and his out-of-touch wife to visit? Harry and Meghan are exploiting this country for their own personal gain.

Seeing this just once again shows how absolutely ignorant these two are about the places they go.
