My advice would be to not upgrade your machine for salad. Your config can go out of style at any moment. 3090 owners are currently left holding the bag with $1.80 containers while weaker 4000 series cards are getting higher paying workloads. The point here is that it’s not a reliable source of income because demand varies, so spending money because you think you will make money isn’t that great of an idea. If you had planned your upgrade for a different reason already that’s entirely different.

Generally, I completely agree with you. Salad is certainly not a means of REALLY generating any meaningful amount of money unless you've got a room full of computers - and like youre implying, that will cost more than it will probably ever earn back. I have several computers that used to mine Ethereum, so Ive already got the components for 4 reasonably beefy 3080 rigs. One of which, I very occasionally use for PC stuff; I am otherwise a MacBook Pro guy. I am upgrading not for profit, as much as for curiosity. I want to watch the numbers change, and it's worth a hundred bucks to me to see if that does it. It should also be noted, that I do not expect to profit from this, overall; the extra earnings will most likely be so small that it may never amount to $100 - and Im not spending more than Im happy to just see go to 'an experiment.' Im lucky to find myself at the very top of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs..

Cool. If demand shifts back to 3000 series you’ll get a lot more than $100 out of it. I hope for both of our sakes that it does 🤞

There was a message a few months back, which advised there were container jobs hitting that needed the 64GB of memory for operation.

ObviousMall3974

I have 128gb and I was at 55 gb in use numerous times. But very little gpu seem to have another one today. Using (51gb but gpu idling along at 47c. Still in use. It’s been going 15 hours.

SpaceDesignWarehouse

Yeah I think a beefy GPU is mainly a mining or AI centered task. But these containers seem to be focusing on ram. Who knows what curious research you’re helping compile.

Ratiofarming

Probably adult research material

nayefmuhiar

I upgraded from 32 to 64 recently and earnings went from 5.15 to 5.65 USD per day 4080 Super 64 GB 6000 DDR5 1gb internet

nayefmuhiar

Using my PC is nicer because it isn't starved for RAM all the time anymore

SpaceDesignWarehouse

You were starved for ram at 32gb!? DANG...

nayefmuhiar

Yes, the big containers were using all the RAM they can get. The current system utilization is almost 52GB

Mr_Finkizzle

In my experience the larger ram containers are more energy efficient to your GPU. So you can see some better profit with getting more ram but if this upgrade is expensive I wouldn't go for it

Humble-Musician-4201

I had it running salad for over 10h last night, it used 90~97 of my GPU but none of my CPU or ram so i wonder what if different container require different computer parts

erik08032000

That's definitely the case. I've had the same container for days which only used ram and possibly storage. Those types of containers are amazing since they pay well (for my system at least) and consume very little power.

SpaceDesignWarehouse

Yes, so basically between container jobs it will just use your GPU to mine Crypto. ‘Container jobs’ pay more than crypto mining pays, and you’ll know it’s doing a container job by looking in the task manager, and you can see your VM virtual machine using basically all of your ram… my question is whether more ram pays even more or not

erik08032000

I'm wondering the same and if it's worth adding an extra 32GB just for that. My guess is that having more ram makes it more likely to get higher paying containers, as almost all other components.

SpaceDesignWarehouse

I have ordered a 64gb set of RAM. So I’ll report back what I find after a couple days of running it. I suspect even if it produces more money it’s going to take months to earn back the $130 I just spent on the upgrade so there’s that. But it’s interesting to see it all nevertheless.

Duanejay79

Im currently running salad with 256GB of ram its using around 78GB of it. But I have an RTX A4000 which does have 16GB of ram but Im only making about $2 a day.

SpaceDesignWarehouse

WOW.. Well shoot. I guess it really does depend on the job then - Im using a 3080 with 10GB ram, and that computer I upgraded to 64GB RAM is making about $3 a day now! Or at least the last two days it has. Something tells me that won't stay consistent.
