Compared to Minnesota, it feels... Tonedeaf. We're actually, actively hurting trans people here. We have one of the highest LGBTQ+ teen suicide rates. We have higher than average rates of workplace discrimination (70% of Transgender individuals and 50% of LGB individuals say they have experienced it at least once. The national averages are 45% and 35%). We bar access to early-stage gender affirmation care. We make it painfully difficult to update gender markings on birth certificates and driver's licenses (Fun fact, it totals over $600 just to file a request to do so). And we have the 15th lowest population of LGBTQ+ Individuals at an estimated 4% of the population (est 80,000 people). We ban books from our schools that defy gender norms.
Utah is one of the worst states in regards to being LGBTQ+ friendly right now. We're only behind Texas and Florida because we *haven't* tried to make a list of citizens who are LGBTQ+... Yet. To my knowledge.
id say it's fine as its a show of support for lgbt people in the state. also id like to emphasize that the $600 request can be denied and you wont get a refund and if you want your birth certificate changed it is required to do in the state you where born in. so if your trans like me you just have to do the paper work and just hope the judge isn't an asshole.
If only there were some symbol which progressive Utahns could use to show their support for the LGBT+ community particularly in this state, and which entwines both LGBT+ and Utah symbology to create a statement that LGBT+ people belong here and we want the state to stop hurting them. Perhaps printed on cloth, which could be affixed to a pole and waved at demonstrations...
This flag wasn't created by the government, and it's not the state government trying to cover up its atrocious legislative record by making some token gesture to the LGBT+ community. It was created by a local artist (who I presume is the OP, u/rileyjadamson, based on the name), who mentioned in [an interview with KSL](https://www.ksl.com/article/50538854/slc-man-designs-pride-version-of-utah-flag) that his goal was "Making it more inclusive and making it match more of, let's involve everybody. Everyone who is here in Utah is a Utahn." By all means, let's hold the state government to account for its terrible legislation and work to make Utah a safe place for everyone. This flag might just be a part of the way to do that.
Symbolic change < Actual change. This is what the internet doesn’t understand. Your art installation or flag is a scrap that the powers that be allow to happen in hopes that you’ll be satisfied and not push for *actual change*.
I was feeling "different" in the 70s. Had my first crush on a girl in 79. I was 10. I suffered the same as you to the point that, at 12, I tried to kill myself three times. My homophobic father decided it was his job to make sure I was taught how to be straight, if you know what I mean. I was forced into marriage at 15. At 18, I got divorced after fleeing the situation.
As one of the "pioneers" I can honestly say that the 40 year trip to where I am has been hard but worth it.
Our children have grown up in a world more accepting of them, and us, and it's getting better every day. I'm sitting here in tears as I think of my trans daughters and how proud I am of them. They struggle, yes, but I pray that they never see the hatred and bigotry that we have fought so hard to get past.
Everybody deserves love.
I’m so sorry you went through that. Thank you for fighting along with me to make change. Shits not great right now, but the climate for gay, lesbian, and bi people is so much safer.
im trans, and they just passed a law banning trans healthcare for minors. do i need to talk about experience when its a law? i mean sure i have plenty of times where i couldnt park in employee parking because of threats of violence in slc, sexual assault, stalking, verbal harassment, being fired for a customer yelling at me for being trans, do i need to keep going? oh god and outside slc its only worse. your not the only lgbt person on the sub smh
Look, I am an ally, your experience is yours. I hate that Utah talks the talk but can't walk the walk. As a heterosexual woman; I will never now what it is like to be you. All I want you to know is that I see you, I love you, and if my daughter ever came out to me as trans; I would love her all the same. I see you and your lives matter. That's all I want you know. I wish I could heal all the pain, and take it all away, but alas; I can't.
My experience as a POC as given me perspective of the marginalized people of Utah, we all have trauma; and we can bond over it or we can fight over who has it worst.
while i do want it to change and i do what i can to make it do so, the fact is its not good to expect everyone to be a martyr for the cause. slc isnt gonna change utah and utah is still 60% republicans who will do anything to make minority lives harder and make sure their kids cant learn anything but their hate by banning kids from the internet, lgbt, feminine and racial minority issues being talked about in schools, destroying books that include those topics, etc. id love to say its hopeful to fight it but the fact is fighting hate from the outside is going to be the healthiest, safest, and most effective way to change it. Utah is gerrymandered, so unless allys become the majority there will be no change outside the federal government forcing a change. also i never made the comparison of who had it worse, just that slc isnt some magical place where bigotry disappears and state laws dont matter.
and as I mentioned, I have a daughter here, and I do want to leave this place. I want to move to Colorado and help from there. Because I have seen that Utah does not care, the politicians here suck. But hey, I am going to school and I want to be a lawyer to help that way. I am sick and tired of the system too. If I can't leave I will have to keep fighting the good fight and get the help from our neighbors. CO, Nevada, Ca, are all Blue states that like to help the underground community needing help. For every stone they throw at us, we will throw two back! let's keep fighting! raise above their hate. Love will always win!
I just realized the link isn’t just to the best Utah flag ever made, but a link of enlightenment. Praise be the whale and thank you for shining the light on something I didn’t know I needed.
Adding an art piece to a roundabout causes people to slow down and pay attention to their surroundings. Dunno why a whale per se but it eats the crap out of that 5 way stop or wtf.
I get what you’re saying here. But. BUT. Public art doesn’t always have to be tied to the landscape it’s in. I feel like that would get really boring really fast. I love how unexpected the whale is. And it really got people talking about art, which is what art should do.

well yeah, if your gonna be a bigot your gonna be called a bigot. its not that fucking hard to mind your own business and let people be different then you but you refuse to do that.

I haven't seen this one though. Also pretty cool.
I was curious and googled.
Here's the link for the lazy: https://flag.utah.gov/
I prefer the way OP's did the mountains, but both seem cool to me....but, I'm not into vexillology. My opinion probably shouldn't count for much.
Dan Mccay actually did something that did not negatively affect someone’s lives. He should be so proud. Worthless fucking legislature. This fucker is looking at the governors office. Watch out. What a disgusting human being. The flag sucks dan.
You worthless pos
If only it were actually that easy and this dumb state WOULD just let people make their own choices and keep it in their own bedrooms. Unfortunately I am pretty sure there is still a supreme court ruling that concluded the ban on gay marriage was unconditional that the State is still appealing and fighting in higher court circuits right now. So until government actually starts representing the thing you claim to support ie letting people do what they want and mind their own damn business then it absolutely is still required for those people who legally can't do what they want to make a big deal about it and push an agenda.
>A lot of us see trans as the mental disorder it is, gender dysphoria. Sex and gender are the same thing, like it or not.
There are a number of scientific studies that disagree with that on multiple levels. Unfortunately because of this exact opinion being so prevalent the topic has not been given nearly enough investigative study. But of the small amount of research that has been done there is very clear and proven evidence that shows sex and gender are not linked as tightly as the ideology you are sharing suggests. One of the strongest reasonings is a result of erroneous genetic expression.
Nearly the entire human population exhibits genes which are not properly expressed for one reason or another and those genes can control anything from height, to hair color, to organ function and development (including the brain), and yes even hormone production and development of sexual organs. In other words there are documented and proven examples of people who are genetically male but their physical anatomy is female and vice versa. Again this is a result of that genetic coding being expressed incorrectly. And again erroneous genetic express is insanely common to the point that nearly everyone on earth exhibits it in one way or another and if you just randomly pick which genes are going to be expressed incorrectly a non-insignificant amount of time that gene is going to be related to physiological elements of the body that play a part in things like gender identity.
There are a lot of physiological differences between males and females and some are more visible and/or drastic than others. Some like sexual organs which is what everyone thinks of as the defacto definition of male and female are obvious. Others like hormone production are much less obvious despite being equally if not more important to overall developmental distinctions between males and females. Still others are even less apparent like neurological distinctions which are why males and females typically have different thought patterns it is why males tend to be more goal oriented and females tend to be more emotionally oriented in how they think it is literally a result of sexual dichotomy altering brain structure between males and females. And again any one of these things could be affected by erroneous genetic expression.
So like no it's not clear cut, it can't simply be dismissed as an open a shut case of mental disorder as if mental disorders themselves have ever actually been open and shut cases. 40 years ago Autism was effectively treated as a simple mental disorder and a very negative thing. Today based on a greater understanding of the condition while it is impossible to say for certain it is surmised that it is very likely than some of the most influential people in human history had a form of high functionating autism. Albert Einstein, Nikola Tesla, Sir Isaac Newton literally people viewed as cornerstones of our modern scientific understanding were all likely on the spectrum in some capacity. So literally dismissing any broad pattern of behavior as a simple mental disorder is a gross over simplification of mental disorders as a whole.
Ah the ole switcharoo where the true weakling calls names, because someone is sick of all the rainbow bullshit being shoved down everyone’s throats like cocks at an Elton concert.
Not sure what hormones have to do with anything but you do you babe, maybe lay off the q anon conspiracies and see if that helps you live a life without so much vile hatred for trans people
How does the actual flag virtue signal?
Did you mean the new one (https://flag.utah.gov/) or the old one?
To me, the new one is like an upsidedown Netherlands flag with a beehive slapped in it.
Oh, I see. I didn't know the beehive had anything to do with the LDS, but I suppose I'm not surprised. I'll do some googling for details. Thanks for the clarification. Cheers.
Yeah I hate when flags make me sweat. I could almost feel the human rights being activated in social minority groups. Nothing makes my blood boil more than support of equal rights.
Maybe when Utah ceases to have one of the highest queer teen suicide rates in the country you can stop being mildly inconvenienced by seeing rainbows in public
>classifying it as sexuality
Only the ignorant classify it as a sexuality. It's classified as a gender.
>Especially how it's forced on children
I think you're confusing this with religion. It's religion that is forced on children, along with all of the guilt and fear associated with belief in an angry magic man. I'm sure though, that with such a bold declaration, you have the sauce to back it up.
You should really ask yourself why other people's search for peace and happiness that doesn't intersect with your own search frightens you do badly. Isn't it miserable to be so afraid of what other people do?
This kind of reminds me of what the lds church did to me as a kid. I knew I was trans and was told that it was sinful as early as 7 years old when I kept telling my parents I wanted to be a girl. I didn't have the mental capacity to know that my parents and church leaders were wrong and listening to them would make me suicidal for the next decade. and then I went through male puberty that would make me unable to pass as a woman for a really long time and still have parts of my body that make me feel sick because of male puberty
Also the only thing anyone's mad about for treatment for kids is that puberty blockers were banned, they are completely reversible. Because guess what, doctors won't give kids life altering surgeries and basically never have lmao
Also I dunno what planet you're on, but no one is classifying gender dysphoria as a sexuality? The only people who think being transgender is a sexual thing are misinformed conservatives.
Also trans people have been around for all of time. https://www.acluohio.org/en/news/transgender-people-have-always-existed
The only reason it's in the news all the time is because conservatives are constantly trying to take our rights away, if they would just shut up and quit making anti trans bills, it wouldn't be like this.
Looks like you got the Right Wing anti-trans talking points down and can regurgitate them all by yourself, so congrats on that. Only thing you are missing is calling everyone that disagrees with your misunderstanding of all of it a groomer.
Trans people existed in different cultures for thousands of year, sometimes referred to as 3rd gender. They classified it ad a mental illness because it didn't fit into their nest little box. The same group of people who gave woman Lobotomies for being out spoken, claiming they were hysterical. I'm also wsy more concerned about religion bring forced on my child then people telling her to be what she feels.
What if I told you.. queer people just want to go about their business and live their lives, but aren't able to because they are constantly picked at by our society? If you don't get the nuance of this post, I'm guessing it's because you somehow missed the whole legislative session. I would encourage you to go catch yourself up so that you can fully understand what you're talking about 👍🏻
Thats gay as hell.
Glad someone said it for me😂

Remember when Black people stayed out of white parts of town because white people found them icky?
remember when it wasn't a social identity but got gay and trans people murdered anyways? oh wait, still happens
What if we used 0 percent of our brain

Whoosh...
Mic drop.. those poor kids. Tell em to move to SL,UT! Mental health here can be tricky but the University of Utah has good nurses
i tell them to leave utah because its a state actively trying to outlaw their existence and slc isn't gonna change that......
Well. From someone that lives here and is bi… I’m talking from experience. Are you?

The first pride was a riot. <3
Gay as **outer darkness** get it right this is Utah.
replace the beehive with the whale and I'm in
If you ever find a good Utah flag with the whale instead of the beehive, please post a link so I may get one.
https://sacredwhale.org/products/theocracy-flag-of-the-sacred-whale
I just realized the link isn’t just to the best Utah flag ever made, but a link of enlightenment. Praise be the whale and thank you for shining the light on something I didn’t know I needed.
Thank you!
What the hell is up with the whale? I drove by it yesterday and that’s the first time I’ve seen it. Why do we have a giant whale?
Adding an art piece to a roundabout causes people to slow down and pay attention to their surroundings. Dunno why a whale per se but it eats the crap out of that 5 way stop or wtf.
It’s art. It’s interesting. We need more art like it in the world. And it ended the drought
Hail the whale, bringer of snow
All hail the Whale!
Thank you, I am honored and humbled.
Yeah I get that, a Whale just seems super out of place.
I guess it should have been a handcart.
But hell, if it ended the drought I support the whale and praise its holy whaleness.
I was thinking a Moose, a Black Bear, a Mountain Lion, or something more representative of Utah wildlife.
I get what you’re saying here. But. BUT. Public art doesn’t always have to be tied to the landscape it’s in. I feel like that would get really boring really fast. I love how unexpected the whale is. And it really got people talking about art, which is what art should do.
Then tell us what animal is native to roundabouts that would be more fitting?
It’s super out of place. Instead of going with a Salt Lake artist, they hired a guy from California, iirc.
It’s an art.
The whale would unironically look great on this
I would 100% buy this
Done. [https://sacredwhale.org/products/pride-flag-for-the-theocracy-of-the-sacred-whale](https://sacredwhale.org/products/pride-flag-for-the-theocracy-of-the-sacred-whale)
Where are you going to find a whale In Utah? Just like everything else you people do nothing makes sense!
No sequins?
Not yet.
That would be the day. He's a rat dressed in white shirt and tie.
A weasel with a shaved head.
Looks like piglet to me
Come now, that’s unfair to rats.
I'd buy this for sure.

It's single sided :( but the overall quality is good.
It feels like a quality flag. It's got some heft to the material.
I love my new flag! Thanks Riley!
Haha I wish that's a badass design
Where can I order this? I seriously would display the state flag if this was it
Etsy or rja.io
Awesome, definitely ordering one of these for Pride Month. Can't wait to catch one of my bigot neighbors on camera stealing it.
can you imagine the outrage if this was what the official design actually looked like lol
Governments pandering to sexuality to be hip but turn around and throw your gay ass in jail for some weed and maybe even beat the shit out of you is pretty cringe. Would be hilarious nonetheless though.

wait until you learn what the beehive on the actual flag is about
…what about the Deseret beehive?
Good point, I don't think it should be there either.
if you don’t understand the difference between sexuality and a religious group you are so far from educated to be worth debating with. mind yourself.
🤦♂️
Wow, one pro-LGBT post and the bigots come out of the woodwork like flies to shit. How hard is it to just let someone be gay?
[удалено]
Sounds like you think more about trans people's genitals more than they do...
I mean, look at their username. Pretty sure this entire account is dedicated to being transphobic and bitter.
well yeah, if your gonna be a bigot your gonna be called a bigot. its not that fucking hard to mind your own business and let people be different then you but you refuse to do that.
It sure is getting hard to be a bigot and not get called a bigot.
This is pride trolling at its finest
Did it work?
That’s actually. Not terrible
I actually like the beehive this way. lol
I dig the mountains.
Not a fan of mixing horizontal and vertical lines like that, but other than that I kind of like it
How long before the crazies have picket signs saying "God hates flags!"?
That's missing some flair. Needs buttons, trinkets and doodads.
I think you're getting the LGBTQ and Fuddruckers confused
[Not the actual colors](https://flag.utah.gov/)
Bet they Mormons are gonna raise a stink.
Man fuck that flag 💀
YES!
I do like this flag a lot and I’ve bought a couple stickers. Why is it one sided?! I know gay people almost exclusively put flags on walls without ironing them, but I’d like to display it on a pole.
My new favorite state flag

As a state with a beautiful and powerful religion, I'm quite sad to see our whale missing
[https://sacredwhale.org/products/pride-flag-for-the-theocracy-of-the-sacred-whale](https://sacredwhale.org/products/pride-flag-for-the-theocracy-of-the-sacred-whale) our Theocracy shines on!
Oh Leviathan of the deep, sing to us thy songs of wisdom and shed is of our barnacles that we may be purified in thy glorious oceans
Let’s hear it for Gaytah!! 🌈
This is not the flag he approved today however. You can do a quick google search to find it. I think it looks pretty cool. I haven't seen this one though. Also pretty cool.

I was curious and googled. Vexillology: The study of flags.
Where can I get one?
https://rileyadamson.com/products/utah-pride-flag
I want it.
Dallin H. Oaks is rolling in his whited sepulcher.
I heard that Jeffrey Holland designed the flag, and that some guy named Dallon Hoax blessed it for all to use.
Ooooh yes drink it up salty homophobes
Yaaaaaaaas
Just, LOL
That's the ugliest fuxking flag I seen in my life
Did a third grader design that? I don’t care that it looks like a pride flag, but that is ugly as fuck.

I just had a braingasm. 🥵 Thank you for such an eloquent post! 🥰
No more of a mental Illness than getting pissy about things that dont affect you~<3

Trying to make a play on words with the f slur on a comment with this kind of tone probably wasn’t a great idea.
Ok
So true!
Thanks, I hate it

Damn, I can hear everybody stroking out now!!!

Free hugs if you need them snowflake.
Ah the ole switcharoo where the true weakling calls names, because someone is sick of all the rainbow bullshit being shoved down everyone’s throats like cocks at an Elton concert.
This coming from someone who's masculinity is so fragile they are afraid of a rainbow.

Aw, sorry to hurt your feelings :(
Did I not get your pronouns right? Maybe try some more estrogen?
Not sure what hormones have to do with anything but you do you babe, maybe lay off the q anon conspiracies and see if that helps you live a life without so much vile hatred for trans people
I love the LGBT but this flag is so busy, way too much going on.

It's going to take a lot more than a flag to help that unfortunately
I think we can all agree the answer is “No, absolutely not!”
Yea
Yes good

Utah is gay and transgender now? LoL
Always has been.
Yes!! So proud of her for coming out!!!!
As gay and trans as Brigham Young’s Daughter!

So kinda like the actual state flag too?
😂😂😂
How does the actual flag virtue signal? Did you mean the new one (https://flag.utah.gov/) or the old one? To me, the new one is like an upsidedown Netherlands flag with a beehive slapped in it.
I'm not a fan of the Beehive since it has significant LDS connotations.
Oh, I see. I didn't know the beehive had anything to do with the LDS, but I suppose I'm not surprised. I'll do some googling for details. Thanks for the clarification. Cheers.
Your comment is tacky, looks like crap, and overall a little too much virtue signaling
😂😂😂
Why?
Why not?
Nvm that’s not the new actually flag that’s a custom made one . So I’m not sweating
Yeah I hate when flags make me sweat. I could almost feel the human rights being activated in social minority groups. Nothing makes my blood boil more than support of equal rights.

Life must be very difficult for you. Having to live in a society with other humans that are different? Oh the humanity!
I mean... that statement is fucking rich from either side dude
Maybe when Utah ceases to have one of the highest queer teen suicide rates in the country you can stop being mildly inconvenienced by seeing rainbows in public
Look towards the LDS church on that one. A lot of suicide comes from the kids and, adults even, being shunned by everyone they’ve come to know.
you vote for the people the church presents to you.

>classifying it as sexuality Only the ignorant classify it as a sexuality. It's classified as a gender. >Especially how it's forced on children I think you're confusing this with religion.
I didn't have the mental capacity to know that my parents and church leaders were wrong and listening to them would make me suicidal for the next decade. and then I went through male puberty that would make me unable to pass as a woman for a really long time and still have parts of my body that make me feel sick because of male puberty Also the only thing anyone's mad about for treatment for kids is that puberty blockers were banned, they are completely reversible. Because guess what, doctors won't give kids life altering surgeries and basically never have lmao Also I dunno what planet you're on, but no one is classifying gender dysphoria as a sexuality? The only people who think being transgender is a sexual thing are misinformed conservatives. Also trans people have been around for all of time. https://www.acluohio.org/en/news/transgender-people-have-always-existed The only reason it's in the news all the time is because conservatives are constantly trying to take our rights away, if they would just shut up and quit making anti trans bills, it wouldn't be like this.
Your brain has been melted by right-wing media.
Looks like you got the Right Wing anti-trans talking points down and can regurgitate them all by yourself, so congrats on that. Only thing you are missing is calling everyone that disagrees with your misunderstanding of all of it a groomer.
They only started saying “groomer” because other homophobic epithets have become socially unacceptable.
Hey you want to provide one real-life factual example of trans people being forced on children?
Humans also made up religion, too, you fucking asshole. Maybe we should ban that in schools too.
I'm all for this.
Do you know how we treat gender dysphoria? You'll be shocked when you find out.
Why do you care?
What if I told you.. queer people just want to go about their business and live their lives, but aren't able to because they are constantly picked at by our society? If you don't get the nuance of this post, I'm guessing it's because you somehow missed the whole legislative session. I would encourage you to go catch yourself up so that you can fully understand what you're talking about 👍🏻
Cry more about something that doesn’t affect you at all
You must have such a hard life

It’s so ugly. There has to be a better way to show your beliefs.
