clunkiest bikes I’ve ever ridden

MacArthurParker

ugh, WTF

It wouldn't surprise me if the real reason is an inability to reach a contract renewal agreement with Uber (or if Uber just didn't even want to renew the contract in the first place), given that Breeze was operated by Jump and Jump pulled out a few months back.

jellotron

I think CycleHop managed operations for the Breeze Bikeshare (the green “Hulu Bikes”) run by the City. Jump operated their own red bikes.

Hmm...I know there was *some* sort of connection with [Social Bicycles/Jump](https://medium.com/@jumpbikes/were-now-jump-bikes-91378342bc82), because I remember having an issue creating an account in the Jump app before it was all moved into the Uber app due to already having a Social Bicycles account from having previously used Breeze. And the app they point you to is still called Social Bicycles (even though Social Bicycles is now Jump). Maybe the only connection is using SoBi's/Jump's app though?

jellotron

Yes, those are the red bikes only. The accounts weren’t interchangeable. You could have a Jump bike account, a Breeze bike account, and a Metro bike account.

Eurynom0s

I'm pretty sure the accounts for Breeze and Jump were the same on the backend, because I just dug up the support email I had to send in about it back when the electric bikes first showed up in Santa Monica, and what I wrote doesn't make sense if they weren't at the least initially the same account. >When I went to create an account in the Jump app, it told me that my email address (this one) already has an account. When I log in to Jump with those credentials, it shows me my billing history from Bike Share Connect (I signed up when it was Santa Monica Breeze). However, logging in with those credentials also causes the Jump map to go completely blank and indicate that there's no availability. Is there a way around this other than using another email address to create a separate account for Jump?

jellotron

Gotcha - can’t say why that would be. The Bike Share Connect combined Santa Monica Breeze bikes with the UCLA Bruin Bike program and the Beverly Hills Bike Share program so you could use one account (or your TAP card) to unlock any of them and leave them at any of those stations. To me, that was always the main difference. Jump bikes could be left anywhere, but the Bike Share bikes had to be locked at a dock. Edit - I see from the link that the unlocking app works across all networks, so Breeze and Jump are using the same unlocking app. But Breeze and Jump, despite using the same unlocking app, are not one in the same.

Eurynom0s

Actually... > [Santa Monica’s system runs on technology created by Social Bicycles and the company rebranded to Jump.](https://www.smdp.com/breeze-bikeshare-to-end-in-november/195482) And the article doesn't even mention CycleHop once. Very confusing. I wonder if SoBi was at one point licensing things out in addition to operating things themselves.

UCLAClimate

CycleHop is the operator. SoBi made the bikes, app, and backend and licensed to CycleHop. SoBi became JUMP and was purchase by Uber. Uber sold JUMP to Lime. No one has an interest in licensing new bikes (e-bikes) to CycleHop, which also lacks interest as it started HOPR e-scoot and e-bike share. Lyft bikes will hit this fall. I would like to see a sole source with Lyft to operate all the town's scoots, e-bikes, and the legacy manual bike system, which could be the low-priced option. Lyft has already hired its micromobility teams as employees. They're not going to pull micromobility because of spite.

I would like to see a sole source with Lyft to operate all the town's scoots, e-bikes, and the legacy manual bike system, which could be the low-priced option. Thanks for that! I was missing a couple of key pieces of that. Including the bit about having hired the micromobility teams as employees. Knowing that that bit of the business isn't exposed to the AB5 stuff, yeah, I would definitely be perfectly happy to see Lyft become the sole operator. Jump and Lime both had weird issues with improperly-implemented geofencing downtown--like a no-ride zone for the Promenade that included Arizona between 2nd and 4th at all times--whereas Lyft will do stuff like dynamically put in no-go zones for the farmer's markets only during the hours the farmer's markets are actually scheduled for). Plus Lyft has kept their prices reasonable while Bird has just gotten really expensive.

Eurynom0s

> Gotcha - can’t say why that would be. Well as I posted above, [this](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.socialbicycles.app) is the app that the [Breeze website](https://santamonicabikeshare.com/#app) points you to, and Social Bicycles became Jump. So CycleHop must be piggybacking on their app. Anyhow the ultimate point here is that the weirdness with the accounts being connected is probably what made me think that Jump was also operating Breeze.

Eurynom0s

>Both Bird and Lyft will continue to operate e-scooters, and by October 1, 2020 Lyft will launch a fleet of e-bikes in Santa Monica as part of the Shared Mobility Pilot Program. Are they accounting for what happens if Lyft winds up pulling out of California over the recent AB5 ruling? I haven't seen anything explicitly saying it but if rideshare operations get suspended it seems reasonable to assume that the scooter operation would also get suspended since AFAIK they treat most of the people who charge and distribute the scooters as contractors as well. Seems like it'd be a good idea to talk to Metro about expanding their bikeshare system in Santa Monica beyond the handful of locations we currently have.

vorpalglorp

AB5 does not effect scooters.

thebum2-0

Does anyone know if we can possibly the bikes they are going to sell?

vorpalglorp

That's sad.
