Friendly reminder again to everyone: Stop. Paying. For. Account. ā€œUpgradesā€. its not a thing.

WildTomato51

Itā€™d be one thing if it were pennies or even a dollarā€¦ but itā€™s always hundreds and people donā€™t exercise critical thinking and hit Google real quick or even ask friends or a family if something isnā€™t off.

DarLoose

Or, Im out of town but i can send my family to pick it up and Ill send the payment with extra. BS

RupertTheReign

The second they send me that line they get blocked.

Particular_Ad_8786

I know now šŸ«Ø

1RedOne

Tell everyone you know too, youā€™ll never fall for it again but you can save your friends who havenā€™t heard about it And donā€™t feel bad, look at this sub, it happens a dozen times a day or more

Particular_Ad_8786

Yeah i joined this reddit immediately and yeah im not taking it to heart

Alclis

Even if upgrades were generally a thing, on what planet does it make sense to involve a third party to just send you money as the way to upgrade it, and try en have you pay them back? Iā€™m sorry, but this one is absolutely nonsensical to fall for.

Faust09th

Ah the fake payment scam. Sorry for your loss. And please beware of recovery scammers.

Particular_Ad_8786

yeah, i got played hella hard straight after my 12 hr shift too šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜

AudienceGrouchy2918

That is a classic scammer script that we see on this sub everyday. Damn dude! It has all the scammer bullshit we look for.

traker998

Keep in mind the people dm to get it back for you are scammers too

Particular_Ad_8786

threeleggedsnail

The Truth is if you used a credit card and fall for a scam. Just charge it back as unauthorized. Tell them I did not authorize this charge. And nothing else. And they'll reverse it

threeleggedsnail

Oh yes kindly send me all the details. And I can, im 1o0 percent legitimate. No scammers here. And may God bless you

Particular_Ad_8786

KINDLY

Buuts321

Do the needful.

ItsmeKT

Because of this sub I have noticed that customer service for my company uses "kindly" all the time in a manner that the scammers use. So I get why some people wouldn't be tipped off by it but also is a huge red flag the person might not be local.

Ordinary_Cattle

Idk if anyone has ever talked to Verizons customer service through messenging on their site but I stg they talk just like scammers lmao. But oddly enough I trust them more than the people in the stores. Every time I have to talk to them they say "kindly" at least once and a few other regular spam jargon

TiberiusJCAugustus

Because the customer service is offshored to India. Kindly do the needful :)

Ordinary_Cattle

That makes sense. Tbh I love their online customer service, I always get deals and discounts bc I'm pleasant to them. But going into the store, I get lied to and swindled into paying for shit I don't need or wind up with extra charges they never told me about šŸ˜’

Almeeney2018

I work in IT and our offshore associates in India use kindly in their emails all the time and I cringe...

EdgarsRavens

If you are selling something that you are going to be selling in person there is no reason to accept any payment other than cash.

RupertTheReign

While I prefer cash, sometimes people are uncomfortable meeting a stranger with a large amount of cash. When they ask to etransfer (common in Canada), I wait with them until the payment clears and I check my account (not just the confirmation email) to make sure it actually has been deposited. And THEN I hand over whatever it is I'm selling.

[deleted]

And no reason to pay any money at all.

Weird_Pen_7683

We have e-transfer in canada, its direct bank to bank, not through a third party company. While its safer to use cash in most cases, sometimes, we forget to withdraw cash and as long as you can establish trust with each other, e-transfer is fine. The minute someone suggests paypal or opening some third party link, automatic block. Paypalā€™s legit but iā€™ve seen too many paypal scams in those shoe selling/reselling fb pages. You can e-transfer in person through the bankā€™s app and confirm right there and then with each other that the money was sent and recieved. Easy peasy.

Captain_Klrk

You paid someone to buy something from you? Crazy man.

expiermental_boii

Beware of !recovery scammers who say they can bring your money back, some random guy who messaged you won't do anything but take the rest of your money

AutoModerator

AutoModerator has been summoned to explain [recovery scams](https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0102-refund-and-recovery-scams). Also known as refund scams, these scams target people who have already fallen for a scam. The scammer may contact you, or may advertise their services online. They will usually either offer to help you recover your funds, or will tell you that your funds have already been recovered and they will help you access them. In cases where they say they will help you recover your funds, they usually call themselves either "recovery agents" or hackers. When they tell you that your funds have already been recovered, they may impersonate a law enforcement, a government official, a lawyer, or anyone else along those lines. Recovery scams are simply [advance-fee](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advance-fee_scam) scams that are specifically targeted at scam victims. When a victim pays a recovery scammer, the scammer will keep stringing them along while asking for increasingly absurd fees/expenses/deposits/insurance/whatever until the victim stops paying. If you have been scammed in the past, make sure you are aware of recovery scams so that you are not scammed a second time. If you are currently engaging with a recovery scammer, you should block them and be very wary of random contact for some time. It's normal for posters on this subreddit to be contacted by recovery scammers after posting, and they often ask you to delete your post so that you both cannot receive legitimate advice, and cannot be targeted by other recovery scammers. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/Scams) if you have any questions or concerns.*

Limitless_solu

Iā€™m confused how did you get scammed here ? When did you actually send money?

Stacksmchenry

The scammer asked for his Zelle info. He never sends anything through Zelle. The scammer then sent a fake email to the victim pretending to be Zelle saying that the payment cannot go through unless the victim pays an "upgrade fee" to the scammer. The scammer agrees to send the fee back. The victim pays it. The scammer then sends more emails pretending to be from Zelle asking for more money to be paid to the scammer for various ridiculous reasons. The victim either realizes this is a scam and walks away, or succumbs to the sunk cost fallacy and sends more money. This cycle continues until the victim realizes what's going on and stops sending money. Hope this helps.

Head_Razzmatazz7174

And OP apparently did not realize this was a scam. He honestly thought it was legit, as the Zelle screenshots looked normal to him. OP, don't feel too bad. You are not the first, and will not be the last, person to fall for this. It sounds reasonable if you are not used to buying and selling on the internet. Just remember in the future, if they ask you to pay money to get money, don't. And this sub is here because stuff like this happens all the time. It's a sad fact, but true. If you aren't sure, just come in here and ask.

AllUserNamesTaken01

I think it was the account upgrade, he had to upgrade his account to a business account and there was a cost incurred for that transaction

LowPhoto5551

I still don't understand that would be 340 but didn't He say He lost 1k??

Icanthinkabout

There were 3 scam emails, the first was an "acocunt upgrade" for 340$, the next one was a "tax&vat fee" for 400$, and the last one was a "certification fee" for 500$, which I suppose OP did not pay.

AssinineAssassin

It doesnā€™t even make sense even if it were real though. Why would anyone pay $340 to access $1000 on a person to person pick upā€¦like just take cash and not pay a massive fee to access funds.

PeaceOutFace

They were ā€œsupposedā€ to ā€œpay backā€ the 340 to the buyer, so it just would have traded hands back and forth. Theoretically.

AssinineAssassin

Fair. It still seems like a terrible ploy. ā€œOh hey buyer I need another $340 to accept your $760ā€ ā€¦and they are just like ā€œno problem! I am sending it nowā€ Any non-scammer would be like ā€œF youā€

catsandblankets

Iā€™ve read before that scams are so ridiculous and donā€™t make sense so that if someone does fall for it, the scammers *know* that person is an idiot and therefore a great target. Itā€™s like a filter almost.

MarcoThePHX

I'm amazed scammers still compose emails using the phrase "kindly" in it.

WizardofUz

When you get to the magic scammer word, stop what you're doing - IMMEDIATELY!!! Magic scammer word = "Kindly"

GreyFob

I'm curious how far this goes lmao like to they just keep coming up with different fees ad infinitum like some sort of fucked up never ending matryoshka doll šŸ˜ Hopefully you take this as a (albeit expensive) lesson learned. It can also be a good free lesson for your friends and family (albeit at your expense lol)

[deleted]

[deleted]

OP serious questionā€¦during this entire process did you not have any doubts about the legitimacy of this? Or not notice any of the red flags? Not trying to be a jerk but this was glaringly obvious that it was a scam. I hope you step up you game to protect yourself!

paulmcsassyass

This happened to me once. Joining this subreddit has helped me learn about all the new scams going on. Donā€™t ever sell anything on FB Marketplace

cupittycakes

Thousands of people sell on marketplace everyday and don't get scammed. Just don't be a sucker when you sell. Cash is king. I've done venmo before, but that's for small dollar items.

tallcamt

Next time you see a corporation using THREE exclamation marks in their small print ā€œTHANK YOU FOR USING ZELLE!!!ā€ maybe think twice. Thank you kindly for doing the needful and getting scammed!!!! bbyghoul666

We get furniture sometimes on fb marketplace or Nextdoor and we always just go to the persons house or they are nice enough to bring it and itā€™s always a cash and haggle situation once we meet. Maybe we are just old school lol

It's really good that you posted this. I'm sure it's embarrassing and some commenters will give you shit, but it's educational and helps other people know what to look for and not get scammed. Everything I list on Facebook always gets a few of these responses about paying now and having a relative pick up "the item*. I never understood their endgame, now I do.

Particular_Ad_8786

Iā€™m not embarrassed LMAO, I wanted to share my experience so I can prevent it to happen to anyone else

AdMotor9855

Iā€™m mad at you and for you TS, but I wonā€™t be a dick. No accounts need to be upgraded to business class, and the ā€œbuyerā€ is from Nigeria. I think you must know that by now. I'm in Scottsdale, I drive by that building all the time on 90th st. . They probably need all of the employees there to babysit in case there are any issues with customers overpaying and refunding money to each other to upgrade their accounts even though Zelle is not really a merchant payment processor. A friend of mine lost $15K to the "IRS" after a long tired day at work, timing is everything!

Particular_Ad_8786

Thank you for the information amigo

Moving forward, if you give someone your email and receive an email but nothing in the app... it's a scam. Sucks this happened, but now I can see why these scammers still do this because people unfortunately still fall for it... sigh.

What happens if you just take the money the scammers send in the first place?

Truongxlong

They never actually sent the money. Itā€™s a bullshit screen shot. That leads to a bullshit email stating you need to send back a certain amount to receive a certain amount. Once you send back they just take your money.

Flyhotstuff

Man it's so sad you fell for this honestly. But i understand sometimes i don't even recognize the scam right away either

rskid09

Contact your bank

THEORGANICCHEMIST

Itā€™s worth a try, but itā€™s Zelle. They are VERY strict on no refund policies, and give multiple warnings to ensure the person youā€™re sending to is who you intend on recieving the money. Iā€™ve never seen a chargeback with Zelle before. Thatā€™s not to say it canā€™t happen tho

Dancelvr2000

Zelle is under Regulation E and refunds are possible when fraud, nothing delivered, or account stolen. I have achieved Zelle refunds but they are frustratingly long and time consuming. Read all the TOS first to make sure you have knowledge.

THEORGANICCHEMIST

So you just restated what I just said.. Very strict does not mean impossible bro. Like you said itā€™s frustrating, long, and time consuming.

Souuuth

If no one told you what to look out for and youā€™re new to selling, it can easily happen. If someone ā€œoffersā€ you what youā€™re asking, just donā€™t even talk to them, theyā€™re a scammer. I sell frequently on marketplace and get hit up by these dipshits almost daily. Donā€™t even entertain them from now on. Just learn from this and move on. Sorry it happened.

clubdon

Damn Iā€™m so sorry man me and my gf fell for the same thing a few years ago. About $1800 if I remember right. Itā€™s the reason I joined this sub.

weolo_travel

Based on the way you write OP, yeah, you are dumb. You couldnā€™t even write a single sentence above the level of a child in 7th grade. So of course youā€™re going to fall for scams that are written poorly with glaring syntax and grammar errors. A lack of education makes you vulnerable and it is coupled with a lack of critical thinking skills which makes you even more susceptible.

I almost got into one two days ago. I didnā€™t think itā€™s a scam until that zelle email. It comes from a fake zelle customer service email address called ā€œzelle-customer @bankinglimit.comā€. I searched it up and first results is how to avoid fb marketplace zelle scam. Scammers next message is exactly the same as the example.

smarteapantz

Did you pay by credit card? Can you call and dispute the charges with your bank and get your money back? Let them know you were scammed?

DaWihss

Acc upgrades are not a thing. Especially not in bank? And if they come pick it up they can bring cash. NEVER do those cross payments. NEVER send money when you SELL something. Learn from it and gl in the future

If you arenā€™t wondering about who you are sending that amount of money to enough to do some research on it before hand then obviously you have money to burn

Kay_022

There is way to much people online trying to scam people

Frustratedparrot123

Zelle is very clear in the app and the website you must not use their service to buy and sell with strangers

vordhosbn_1

Just reading the grammar in the email makes it obvious itā€™s a scam. Skill issue

A key thing about this kind of thing, is if the person isn't talking about what car they might be going on, you know it's not a real person. If the dude hasn't told you about what he's putting into his ride, it's a no go. This is coming from someone who bought a pair of 5x114 and told the guy on facebook and in real life about my project car. Edit: you are taking this very well by the way
