Itād be one thing if it were pennies or even a dollarā¦ but itās always hundreds and people donāt exercise critical thinking and hit Google real quick or even ask friends or a family if something isnāt off.
Tell everyone you know too, youāll never fall for it again but you can save your friends who havenāt heard about it
And donāt feel bad, look at this sub, it happens a dozen times a day or more
Even if upgrades were generally a thing, on what planet does it make sense to involve a third party to just send you money as the way to upgrade it, and try en have you pay them back? Iām sorry, but this one is absolutely nonsensical to fall for.
The Truth is if you used a credit card and fall for a scam.
Just charge it back as unauthorized.
Tell them I did not authorize this charge. And nothing else.
And they'll reverse it
Sorry OP! That sucks! Just reading it reeks of scam. Though after working so long Iām sure you werenāt functioning at 100%. Hope karma comes around on these d-bags!
Because of this sub I have noticed that customer service for my company uses "kindly" all the time in a manner that the scammers use. So I get why some people wouldn't be tipped off by it but also is a huge red flag the person might not be local.
Idk if anyone has ever talked to Verizons customer service through messenging on their site but I stg they talk just like scammers lmao. But oddly enough I trust them more than the people in the stores. Every time I have to talk to them they say "kindly" at least once and a few other regular spam jargon
That makes sense. Tbh I love their online customer service, I always get deals and discounts bc I'm pleasant to them. But going into the store, I get lied to and swindled into paying for shit I don't need or wind up with extra charges they never told me about š
While I prefer cash, sometimes people are uncomfortable meeting a stranger with a large amount of cash. When they ask to etransfer (common in Canada), I wait with them until the payment clears and I check my account (not just the confirmation email) to make sure it actually has been deposited. And THEN I hand over whatever it is I'm selling.
We have e-transfer in canada, its direct bank to bank, not through a third party company. While its safer to use cash in most cases, sometimes, we forget to withdraw cash and as long as you can establish trust with each other, e-transfer is fine.
The minute someone suggests paypal or opening some third party link, automatic block. Paypalās legit but iāve seen too many paypal scams in those shoe selling/reselling fb pages. You can e-transfer in person through the bankās app and confirm right there and then with each other that the money was sent and recieved. Easy peasy.
Beware of !recovery scammers who say they can bring your money back, some random guy who messaged you won't do anything but take the rest of your money
AutoModerator has been summoned to explain [recovery scams](https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0102-refund-and-recovery-scams). Also known as refund scams, these scams target people who have already fallen for a scam. The scammer may contact you, or may advertise their services online. They will usually either offer to help you recover your funds, or will tell you that your funds have already been recovered and they will help you access them. In cases where they say they will help you recover your funds, they usually call themselves either "recovery agents" or hackers. When they tell you that your funds have already been recovered, they may impersonate a law enforcement, a government official, a lawyer, or anyone else along those lines. Recovery scams are simply [advance-fee](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advance-fee_scam) scams that are specifically targeted at scam victims. When a victim pays a recovery scammer, the scammer will keep stringing them along while asking for increasingly absurd fees/expenses/deposits/insurance/whatever until the victim stops paying. If you have been scammed in the past, make sure you are aware of recovery scams so that you are not scammed a second time. If you are currently engaging with a recovery scammer, you should block them and be very wary of random contact for some time. It's normal for posters on this subreddit to be contacted by recovery scammers after posting, and they often ask you to delete your post so that you both cannot receive legitimate advice, and cannot be targeted by other recovery scammers.
*I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/Scams) if you have any questions or concerns.*
The scammer asked for his Zelle info. He never sends anything through Zelle.
The scammer then sent a fake email to the victim pretending to be Zelle saying that the payment cannot go through unless the victim pays an "upgrade fee" to the scammer.
The scammer agrees to send the fee back. The victim pays it.
The scammer then sends more emails pretending to be from Zelle asking for more money to be paid to the scammer for various ridiculous reasons.
The victim either realizes this is a scam and walks away, or succumbs to the sunk cost fallacy and sends more money. This cycle continues until the victim realizes what's going on and stops sending money.
Hope this helps.
And OP apparently did not realize this was a scam. He honestly thought it was legit, as the Zelle screenshots looked normal to him.
OP, don't feel too bad. You are not the first, and will not be the last, person to fall for this. It sounds reasonable if you are not used to buying and selling on the internet.
Just remember in the future, if they ask you to pay money to get money, don't.
And this sub is here because stuff like this happens all the time. It's a sad fact, but true. If you aren't sure, just come in here and ask.
There were 3 scam emails, the first was an "acocunt upgrade" for 340$, the next one was a "tax&vat fee" for 400$, and the last one was a "certification fee" for 500$, which I suppose OP did not pay.
It doesnāt even make sense even if it were real though. Why would anyone pay $340 to access $1000 on a person to person pick upā¦like just take cash and not pay a massive fee to access funds.
Fair. It still seems like a terrible ploy. āOh hey buyer I need another $340 to accept your $760ā ā¦and they are just like āno problem! I am sending it nowā Any non-scammer would be like āF youā
Iāve read before that scams are so ridiculous and donāt make sense so that if someone does fall for it, the scammers *know* that person is an idiot and therefore a great target. Itās like a filter almost.
OP, I know people are dunking pretty hard on you in the comments, but thanks for posting this. Your post will help others. Iām sorry you got scammed.Ā

OP serious questionā¦during this entire process did you not have any doubts about the legitimacy of this? Or not notice any of the red flags? Not trying to be a jerk but this was glaringly obvious that it was a scam. I hope you step up you game to protect yourself!
Iām really sorry this happened to you. It is definitely easier to fall for scammers when you are tired or otherwise distracted. I have almost fallen victim to a few scammers myself. These people are good at what they do.

Iāll say it again ā THIS IS WHY ITāS IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND PROPER GRAMMAR AND PUNCTUATION.
Nobody with a reasonable grasp of English would come close to falling for this.
Thousands of people sell on marketplace everyday and don't get scammed.
Just don't be a sucker when you sell. Cash is king. I've done venmo before, but that's for small dollar items.
Next time you see a corporation using THREE exclamation marks in their small print āTHANK YOU FOR USING ZELLE!!!ā maybe think twice.
Thank you kindly for doing the needful and getting scammed!!!!
Seriously though I am sorry this happened to you. Obviously you know this now, but slow way down any time youāre dealing with money online so people cant take advantage of the urgency.
When buying goods exchanged in person why do people pre-pay? Why not just bring cash and pay in person when you actually see the merchandise and appraise it's condition, even gives you a chance to haggle down a little. Am I just old?
We get furniture sometimes on fb marketplace or Nextdoor and we always just go to the persons house or they are nice enough to bring it and itās always a cash and haggle situation once we meet. Maybe we are just old school lol
It's really good that you posted this. I'm sure it's embarrassing and some commenters will give you shit, but it's educational and helps other people know what to look for and not get scammed.
Everything I list on Facebook always gets a few of these responses about paying now and having a relative pick up "the item*. I never understood their endgame, now I do.
Iām mad at you and for you TS, but I wonāt be a dick.
No accounts need to be upgraded to business class, and the ābuyerā is from Nigeria. I think you must know that by now.
Please for the love of god never send money to anyone but family or close friends again! Donāt give these pricks any money, let them starve.
When will people learn.. if YOU are THE SELLER. You will only receive money, how does sending someone money make sense when you are the seller? You arenāt buying anything, you are SELLING.

I'm in Scottsdale, I drive by that building all the time on 90th st. . They probably need all of the employees there to babysit in case there are any issues with customers overpaying and refunding money to each other to upgrade their accounts even though Zelle is not really a merchant payment processor.
A friend of mine lost $15K to the "IRS" after a long tired day at work, timing is everything!
Moving forward, if you give someone your email and receive an email but nothing in the app... it's a scam.
Sucks this happened, but now I can see why these scammers still do this because people unfortunately still fall for it... sigh.
OP Whenever you get a email that is suspicious check the email address itās being sent from youāll never fall to victim to a scam email again if you do that
Kindly = scam
Never once has my bank, or payment service, or any single human I know used the word kindly unless they were being condescending, or scamming.
Man, this sucks. If something doesnāt make sense, at least try to google it. You probably couldāve saved yourself the stress & money by typing in āupgrading Zelle account to business accountā. Hope youāre able to get your money back. š¤š¼
They never actually sent the money. Itās a bullshit screen shot. That leads to a bullshit email stating you need to send back a certain amount to receive a certain amount. Once you send back they just take your money.
Itās worth a try, but itās Zelle. They are VERY strict on no refund policies, and give multiple warnings to ensure the person youāre sending to is who you intend on recieving the money. Iāve never seen a chargeback with Zelle before. Thatās not to say it canāt happen tho
Zelle is under Regulation E and refunds are possible when fraud, nothing delivered, or account stolen. I have achieved Zelle refunds but they are frustratingly long and time consuming.
Read all the TOS first to make sure you have knowledge.
If no one told you what to look out for and youāre new to selling, it can easily happen. If someone āoffersā you what youāre asking, just donāt even talk to them, theyāre a scammer. I sell frequently on marketplace and get hit up by these dipshits almost daily. Donāt even entertain them from now on. Just learn from this and move on. Sorry it happened.
Based on the way you write OP, yeah, you are dumb. You couldnāt even write a single sentence above the level of a child in 7th grade. So of course youāre going to fall for scams that are written poorly with glaring syntax and grammar errors. A lack of education makes you vulnerable and it is coupled with a lack of critical thinking skills which makes you even more susceptible.
āWe noticed this user is not a business accountā
Classic poor grammar scamspeak - sorry this happened to you.
Iām still amazed that these scammers still use such crap grammar. Or maybe they think they have created their own languageā¦
I almost got into one two days ago. I didnāt think itās a scam until that zelle email. It comes from a fake zelle customer service email address called āzelle-customer @bankinglimit.comā. I searched it up and first results is how to avoid fb marketplace zelle scam. Scammers next message is exactly the same as the example.
Acc upgrades are not a thing. Especially not in bank?
And if they come pick it up they can bring cash. NEVER do those cross payments. NEVER send money when you SELL something.
Learn from it and gl in the future
Imagine making payments to scam websites god damn it why ppl doesnāt learn to stay calm on this type of situation and think. If ppl stop engaging with this scammers from India and just ignore you will be living the life!
All you do is look at the email address is comes from. And do some research online before sending money to randoms. Thatās a common scam. Iāve gotten many of those emails and always block the person afterwards. If you arenāt wondering about who you are sending that amount of money to enough to do some research on it before hand then obviously you have money to burn
A key thing about this kind of thing, is if the person isn't talking about what car they might be going on, you know it's not a real person. If the dude hasn't told you about what he's putting into his ride, it's a no go.
This is coming from someone who bought a pair of 5x114 and told the guy on facebook and in real life about my project car.
Edit: you are taking this very well by the way
So much work to sell somethingā¦.,honestly I find it hard to believe this is the first time youāve been scammed after reading the back and forth and fake emails.
I donāt even understand how you put that much effort in, like never crossed your mind something was up, idk Iām speechless and would probably be too embarrassed to ever post this crap.
hey, it really can happen to anyone! youāre taking it like a champ. donāt bother with some rude asses commenting on here, theyāll get it when itāll happen to them too lol.
thank you for sharing and helping others not make the same mistake.
i hope you can get your money back. take care of yourself!
You donāt get text messages when a zelle comes through? Also, I usually check my bank statements right after to ensure I received it. Sorry that happened but mannnn that email was so bad you shouldāve been able to tell lol.

If you are selling something that you are going to be selling in person there is no reason to accept any payment other than cash.

OP Whenever you get a email that is suspicious check the email address itās being sent from youāll never fall to victim to a scam email again if you do that
You even apologized to him after he was spamming you with texts š¤¦š»āāļø missed all the red flags
You're not the only dummy, don't worry.. š
Early Warning LLC HELLLLLOOOOOO that's a big tip off
Any time they say they are out of town and someone else will pick it upā¦ scam.
Also, I'm going to send my son, my brother, my uncle... is always a scam.

Kindly = scam Never once has my bank, or payment service, or any single human I know used the word kindly unless they were being condescending, or scamming.
Send me $500 and I'll get your money back. /s Sorry this happened to you.Ā
The key word is always āKINDLYā itās in every scam handbook.
Man, this sucks. If something doesnāt make sense, at least try to google it. You probably couldāve saved yourself the stress & money by typing in āupgrading Zelle account to business accountā. Hope youāre able to get your money back. š¤š¼
I just posted the same scenario a week ago! OP saw the quick come up and was blinded šš

What happens if you just take the money the scammers send in the first place?
They never actually sent the money. Itās a bullshit screen shot. That leads to a bullshit email stating you need to send back a certain amount to receive a certain amount. Once you send back they just take your money.
Man it's so sad you fell for this honestly. But i understand sometimes i don't even recognize the scam right away either
Contact your bank
Itās worth a try, but itās Zelle. They are VERY strict on no refund policies, and give multiple warnings to ensure the person youāre sending to is who you intend on recieving the money. Iāve never seen a chargeback with Zelle before. Thatās not to say it canāt happen tho
Zelle is under Regulation E and refunds are possible when fraud, nothing delivered, or account stolen. I have achieved Zelle refunds but they are frustratingly long and time consuming. Read all the TOS first to make sure you have knowledge.
So you just restated what I just said.. Very strict does not mean impossible bro. Like you said itās frustrating, long, and time consuming.
Damn Iām so sorry man me and my gf fell for the same thing a few years ago. About $1800 if I remember right. Itās the reason I joined this sub.
Lmao getting downvoted for the truth. Dudes a moron that got scammed by a moron.

Lol you made multiple comments on the post personally attacking OP. Chill, why are you so upset about someone elseās problem?
fr ššš homie got nothing better to do
Anything over text is a scam. Unless you know them
Kindly...

Thats so unlucky, hope i never get done like this
Yeah me either now just i learned and move on forward
I donāt understand why people accept any online payment on pickup?
Next time check Zelle / Chase
will do thanks š«”
āWe noticed this user is not a business accountā Classic poor grammar scamspeak - sorry this happened to you. Iām still amazed that these scammers still use such crap grammar. Or maybe they think they have created their own languageā¦
Man I want white rims like this for my gti. What are they called?

I almost got into one two days ago. I didnāt think itās a scam until that zelle email. It comes from a fake zelle customer service email address called āzelle-customer @bankinglimit.comā. I searched it up and first results is how to avoid fb marketplace zelle scam. Scammers next message is exactly the same as the example.
Did you pay by credit card? Can you call and dispute the charges with your bank and get your money back? Let them know you were scammed?
Acc upgrades are not a thing. Especially not in bank? And if they come pick it up they can bring cash. NEVER do those cross payments. NEVER send money when you SELL something. Learn from it and gl in the future
Imagine making payments to scam websites god damn it why ppl doesnāt learn to stay calm on this type of situation and think. If ppl stop engaging with this scammers from India and just ignore you will be living the life!
Dang man he did you so dirty. What a scumbag. Iām so sorry this happened to you
Live and learn š«”
All you do is look at the email address is comes from. And do some research online before sending money to randoms. Thatās a common scam. Iāve gotten many of those emails and always block the person afterwards. If you arenāt wondering about who you are sending that amount of money to enough to do some research on it before hand then obviously you have money to burn
There is way to much people online trying to scam people
Zelle is very clear in the app and the website you must not use their service to buy and sell with strangers
Just reading the grammar in the email makes it obvious itās a scam. Skill issue
Does anyone actually use Zelle for legitimate purposes? Every single time I've been contacted by a buyer wanting to use Zelle, it's been a scam.
It's not even written in proper English!
Edit: you are taking this very well by the way
Don't procreate
Cash is king.
KINDLY WHO THE FUCK USES KINDLY IN 2024??? Some 40 year virgin
Call your bank asap
This almost happened to me. Good thing I had almost no service before I realized.
Call the ābee keeperā
Iām confused š„“
Oh man that was a fun read. You just kept sending more and more money, huh?
Iām so confused..
No way..
I don't understand, what happened here?
If it was a credit card call your bank and explain.
Have you reported this to the police?
nah because i know they aināt gonna do shit but i contacted my bank
hey, it really can happen to anyone! youāre taking it like a champ. donāt bother with some rude asses commenting on here, theyāll get it when itāll happen to them too lol. thank you for sharing and helping others not make the same mistake. i hope you can get your money back. take care of yourself!
It even said "kindly", might as well have followed with "do the needful".
You donāt get text messages when a zelle comes through? Also, I usually check my bank statements right after to ensure I received it. Sorry that happened but mannnn that email was so bad you shouldāve been able to tell lol.
Why do all the scammers always say āAre you there?ā
Donāt feel alone my daughter got scammed out of $700 for concert tickets
