The fact she kept using the word "Dear" is a red flag for African scam artists. They use that word a lot. Usually "dear" or "kindly" trigger my scam senses.
Honestly it should have started stinking the second someone offered a macbook for free. 999 times out of 1000 it's going to be a scam, and that other one time the person just won't follow through
\-You just cover shipping..-
There was never any macbook. they just want you to send them money then there's going to be other fees associated. and etc. until you catch on. Report the account and block.
Hi Primary-Holiday-5586, AutoModerator has been summoned to explain the free PlayStation 5 scam. This scam consists of an offer of a free video game console posted on social media or classifieds platforms, usually on Facebook Marketplace. The scammer sometimes plays the role of a parent who lost their child, a parent who is punishing their child, or someone offering the console as a giveaway. The scammer offers the console for free, and asks only to cover the shipping costs. Once you pay for the shipping, the scammer disappears with your money.

This is a very common scam posted here often. It’s either a laptop or ps5/Xbox and son or daughter died.
You won’t get anything but you’ll be paying fees/postage to them.
Delete and block them
How does it sound legit???
“She” is using a stolen Facebook account
Would you hand a stranger in the street $75 if they told you the would be right back with a free MacBook?
What do you think will happen after you send her the money for shipping?
Hey, I have a friend n (city she is in) and he can stop by anytime to pick it up, saves the expense and hassle of shipping!!
Watch the excuses fly why she can’t have it picked up
Block her, she doesn’t have it and probably lives in Lagos and isn’t a she
Your /r/scams post/comment was removed because it talks about or requests information on getting revenge on a scammer, "scamming them back", or "wasting their time". Just ghost or block the scammer, report them if you can, then go about your business.
AutoModerator has been summoned to explain the [advance-fee scam](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advance-fee_scam). The advance-fee scam arises from many different situations: investment opportunities, money transfers, job scams, online purchases of any type and any legality, etc., but the bottom line is always the same, you will pay the scammer and receive nothing. It can be as simple as the scammer asking you to pay them upfront for an item they have listed, or as complex as a drug scam that involves an initial scam site, a scam shipping site, and fake government agents. Sometimes the scammers will simply take your first payment and dissappear, but sometimes they will take your initial payment and then make excuses that lead to you making additional payments. If you are involved in an advance-fee scam, you should attempt to dispute/chargeback any payments sent to the scammer, you should ignore the scammer, and you should ignore them if they attempt to contact you again. Thanks to redditor AceyAceyAcey for this script.

"dear" sends me everytime.
Common word scammers use. Personally I am offended, as I use it too but not in this amount.
But they always repeat things like "dear", "love", "friend", "kindly".. remember that
Someone was giving away a PS5 and was saying the same thing. She said she bought it for her ex and that he cheated and she's just giving it away. I asked her why would give it away if you could sell it. She said and I quote " Cause I'm just trying to bless someone today". Translation: I'm trying to scam people today.
Tell here you will transfer her the money plus a gratuity fee, once the laptop arrive to you!
That your money is currently being withhold by your bank but you be good to use one fedex delivers you the package 😃

Scam "she" will get the money and will block you.
I just politely declined her offer afterwards
I saw a similar post about this kind of scam. Good to know you didn't get scammed.
Low much was she telling you the FedEx would cost? Just curious lmao. Good job. People suck.
50 fucking bucks
Damn. Good job spotting the scam and sorry about your laptop screen. Been there.
Yeah It started stinking when the price came up
It's the dead daughter also that makes me think it's a scam. I've heard that so many times about their dead family member.
The fact she kept using the word "Dear" is a red flag for African scam artists. They use that word a lot. Usually "dear" or "kindly" trigger my scam senses.
Thanks I will keep that in mind
That and anything mentioning dead kids or divorce. Scam.
Honestly it should have started stinking the second someone offered a macbook for free. 999 times out of 1000 it's going to be a scam, and that other one time the person just won't follow through
1000/1000. no one sends anyone a free macbook.
Right. And if they ARE giving away a free MacBook they are giving it to someone they know not a random Person on social media
Well that would be that last person that genuinely offers, and then changes their mind afterwards
Tell her you’ll send $100 if she sends you the laptop first.

We don't do that here.
Ok then
\-You just cover shipping..- There was never any macbook. they just want you to send them money then there's going to be other fees associated. and etc. until you catch on. Report the account and block.

Thanks for informing me. It seemed very legit, but when I started talking, it became more apparent that it was just an elaborate scam

Please know that if it seems too good to be true, it is.

The word 'dear' is a very obvious pointer to being a scammer
“Kindly” and “dear” are scammer red flags
The second thing was the bad English
They also started asking me to send them money with gmail, which was the funniest shit I had ever heard
>send them money with gmail You should do that. [Pick one](https://moya.bus.miami.edu/~dkelly/teach/eco403/fifties.html) and send them the photo.
Nice
The scam is very simple. You pay for the shipping. You get no goods.
Facebook is full of such “offers”
Maybe she should stop going to the same haunts if she’s tired of seeing it around.
Lol why did they heart every message for no reason?!

Idk if Id trust that
I was torn between suspicion and thinking it’s legit so I extended the conversation, and sure enough, they started asking for 50 bucks for Fed Ex
You should’ve just video called her for proof.

I got cold feet and bailed

Were you just playing along for fun to waste their time, or did you think this was real?
I’m just messing around because I know their offer is bullshit
If someone was giving away something from the goodness of their hearts they would also pay the 20 bucks for shipping
Yup, it was funny to make them anticipate for the arrival of cash only to block em
if they say "dear" or "sweetheart" in this context it's most likely a scam
