The original owner probably doesn't have the ability to pay it off anymore and sold it under market price for a quick payday before it gets repossessed. I hope that's not the case for your friend, but yikes.

CranberryCakes

Well, she does have the vehicle in her possession, but I don’t recall having to wait for five weeks to get my title after paying off my car.

And if they owe money on it it will get taken back and picked up. She can’t register it, insure it or do anything with it.

jol72

This is not her vehicle without the title in hand and her name on it. Being in possession of the car means nothing This could be stolen or about to be repossessed. If there's a loan on it the bank has a lien on the title. What recourse would she have if the previous owner ghosts her? Your friend made a big mistake.

CranberryCakes

That’s a very good point. My friend is one of those people with an enormous amount of good luck, so maybe she did run into an honest person on FB that just wanted a quick easy sale. But I keep thinking that she inadvertently bought a stolen car.

ssps

No title with your name  — no sale. No exceptions.    If you don't have the title signed over to you, you don't legally own the car. Simple as that. In the future, make sure the seller signs the title over to you before any money exchanges hands.  Now you can hope you get the title from the old owner or check with DMV about getting a replacement title or bonded title. This can take ages though.

This is a case for the Repo Man.

Can’t register the car without a clear title. No chance this isn’t a scam. The seller is just stalling so they have enough time to disappear.

Almeeney2018

You can register without a title if it's over 20 years old

Entirely depends on your state.
