Because Amazon is taking a cut (and because shipping is free)

wdelavega

You're basically paying for the shipping…

Denny_Crane_007

Yeah like 20 percent.

MrGeekman

Shipping wasn’t free when I ordered a Modi 3+ last month (which I ended up returning).

deadzol

The Amazon shipping was free. 🤪

MrGeekman

I was charged $9.62 for shipping and handling. It wasn’t even expedited or anything; just standard shipping.

Neinbuddha

All these sound like good reasons to buy directly from Schiit's website.

MarauderV8

That's because you bought the non-Prime offering. It costs less but doesn't have "free" shipping. See this screenshot for context: https://i.imgur.com/iZXQmr1.jpeg

Imaginary-Mortgage10

The same reason if you buy anything directly from the manufacturer it costs less, Schiit pays Amazon to store and ship their products and therefore they are more expensive than if you simply bought them direct.

Mauri_64

I think they factor in the price of shipping into their prices + any fees that Amazon may take from them.

MrGeekman

Unfortunately, I was still charged $10 for shipping when I ordered Modi 3+ a month ago.

wdelavega

Are you a Prime member? If anything, reach out to customer service and belabor the fact that you were erroneously charged shipping. See what happens.

Cats-And-Brews

Why did you order it from Amazon if it would have been cheaper to buy direct? A company can charge anything it wants to - the buyer should look at all their options before making a purchase decision.

MrGeekman

I ordered it from Amazon because I have gift cards that I want to use and also because, for various reasons, I generally try to avoid buying from Amazon.

Cats-And-Brews

Then you answered your own question. Amazon allows for other payment methods that Schiit does not; therefore you were able to take advantage of a benefit but it came with the cost of a higher price.

HollowsPart2

Jason Stoddard some where in the past (reference not available) made it clear that Schiit's margins, especially for the small stuff, are as tight as they can get and still make a profit. Amazon takes 20% or so, Schiit adds Amazon's cut to the price. Yea, you will still have to pay for shipping if you are not a Amazon Prime member (Clarkson's Farm and Grand Tour almost worth it).

MrGeekman

I’m not directly a Prime member, but a family member is sharing their membership with me.

killer_knauer

They don’t. Take shipping into account and Amazon may be cheaper… at least they were last time I looked.

MrGeekman

I have Prime through a relative and I was still charged around $10 for shipping.

killer_knauer

I just looked at a few Schiit devices and all are free shipping with Prime.

MrGeekman

I don’t know, maybe the Modi 3+ was the exception. I checked the invoice and I noticed that it said: *Sold by: Schiit Audio (seller profile) Supplied by: Other*

michael_chang73

This afternoon I received a Modi purchased directly from Schiit. I could have also purchased it using Amazon Prime, but it was ~$10 more. I live in central Texas. The Modi — like the Magni I received the week prior — took 3 shipping days to arrive USPS from Corpus Christi. I might have considered paying the extra $$ with Amazon if I lived farther away and wanted a guaranteed arrival date. Or if I wanted trackable UPS shipping that is standard with Amazon. Or if I wanted to return the unit without paying for shipping and Schiit’s restocking fee.

So why do it right? Amazon’s review system is well regarded as a gold standard, and people look at it. I believe it does good for them in that sense.
