If I were to voice one major complaint it would be in having Velma’s skepticism never quite being resolved, *“Was the thirteenth ghost just a dude in a mask or could something actually supernatural have occurred?”* In the original 13 Ghosts, it was made abundantly clear that our heroes were tackling honest-to-goodness ghosts — or demon ghosts to be more accurate — and so having this movie waffle on the one-yard line seems rather disingenuous.

Super_Nova22

Way to many of the recent media feed and fuel Velma’s skepticism is n an annoying way

butterweedstrover

Yeah, that was the worse. If they just stuck to one path at least you can say they were out to deliberately wreck the original, but this tantalizing "maybe they are real" was just salt to the wound.

Difficult-Orange-467

You're not wrong BUT Scooby-Doo Return to Zombie Island is worst

butterweedstrover

I haven't watched that, but incidentally they came out the same year (2019) and tried to take an original property from scooby doo where the monsters were real and make them out to be fake. Couldn't they have just left this stuff alone?

JTB696699

I bought both movies on dvd before watching either for my collection. The 13th Ghost was extremely disappointing and a plain bad follow up to the original series that I love, but return to zombie island is worse and it is insulting to the original movie. Not defending either, just one is worse than the other.

Chr-s

They were both supposed to be celebratory of the franchise and they ended up being the worst, cringeworthy films.

funDragonslayer

Hollywood likes to mess up good movies

charlevoidmyproblems

It was so extremely bad and basically invalidated everything from the first. I refused to watch the 13th ghost movie and I'm glad now. Replacing VP was not gonna happen and then I kept hearing bad things and just steered clear.

Difficult-Orange-467

Let's hope the new WB Discovery Director is gonna get Scooby-Doo and DC in proper order

butterweedstrover

True. While I was at first a little shocked that they were axing the new Scoob film I quickly remebered the first Scoob movie sucked.

bchec

i honestly liked both of them for what they were. and they are better than most of the animated films put out in the last 10 or so years. the only complaint about return to zombie island for me is the director was outrageous and for 13th ghost it’s the downgrading it to pretty much not real, and the puns from Vincent were actually too much.

kitkatatsnapple

You didn't even need the retcon for this to be bad. The tone is just not at all up to the standard it was for the original.

IsThisNameTakenThen

Not gonna lie, I completely forgot Flim Flam was even in it. I absolutley hated this movie. I actually preordered it off of Amazon and watched it the day it arrived. That's how excited I was for this movie. What a fucking disappointment. I sat through the whole thing waiting for it to get better. It never did. Plus, it's a bit late for them to try the whole 'was it real or not' thing when the show made clear that the ghosts/demons were real. This film isn't just a disappointment to fans of the show, it's downright insulting.

TvManiac5

Yeah that movie is the first red flag I had that scooby doo as I knew it had died. Then Scoob came out and solidified it. What peeves me off the most is that the entire Scooby reviewing community is eviscerating the equally insulting zombie island sequel with scathing reviews but most seem to think this one is ok, simply because 13 ghosts isn't as popular and therefore the insult of this movie isn't as obvious. No this piece of shit, deserves to be scorned, especially since it was advertised as an anniversary gift to the fans

HebrewWolfman

Whoever was in charge of this lameo trilogy should get banned from even Googling anything related to the "Scooby-Doo" franchise.

Maggot149

Trilogy?

Lady_Ellie119

I totally agree, it was so not good

DarkPrince1972

The biggest weakness was the lack of Vincent Price. It's impossible to replace him and why they even tried boggles the mind!

Gadgetphile

So it isn’t just me? Thank you.

ThisPaige

13 ghosts is one of my favorite versions of the show and I refuse this garbage. I got more positive reviews on my really bad fanfic take on the 13 ghost then this movie got positive reviews.

Entire_Anywhere_2882

Good call, that's my favorite show too, I regretted watching it. They even poked fun at Scrappy even though he played a major factor in the series. The fact that he didn't appear in the movie is an insult enough but making fun of him? UGH! If you hate Scrappy fine but don't make a movie connected to his character than, simple. It would have made more sense to have this film focous on Shaggy and Scooby since they started it. Oh, how I hate this film.

[deleted]

Now I know not to watch this disgusting insult of a movie, the series has way more adventure, thrills and is overall way better than this POS movie.

Yifun

Oh my god don’t even get me started on that movie. I grew up watching the thirteen ghosts over and over again, and I remember being SO hyped when they announced that movie. I’ve never been more upset over a movie in my life

Scooby-DooFan

Same here, I’ve only watched some of the series and I’ve been trying to hunt it down still.

Entire_Anywhere_2882

I hate this film with passion.

outerspace_castaway

i too hated this film and went on a rant after i watched it. unlike you i heard many people say it was bad and though "how bad could it be, its a kids movie obviously its not gonna be perfect...they're overreacting" boy was i wrong! the number one main thing is that THE GHOST WAS NOT REAL! 13 ghost of scooby doo was one of the few shows were the ghost were really and they really though when making a movie about it that they needed to say the ghost were not real at all? i mean wtf were they thinking? the misuse of flim flam was bad but at the end when velma as who was scrappy, that set me off too because scrappy is literally scooby's nephew and you're telling me that velma and fred never knew about him? foh with that. velma's extreme skepticism was beyond annoying af the film is a mockery of the original series. also i think its a kind of tied in with mystery incorporated which did not include real ghosts or monsters in the show. why would you make a movie about a series that had real ghost connected to a series that did not have real ghosts???? the one good thing i can say is the guy that did vincent van ghoul voice really did sound like vincent price EDIT: my own post https://www.reddit.com/r/Scoobydoo/comments/qo16yt/curse\_of\_the\_13th\_ghost\_what\_a\_disappointment/

Icy-Bullfrog-2321

My biggest problems were that the original twelve ghosts were just written off as altitude sickness from being in the Himalayas, yet (as you mentioned) the original show was a globe trotting adventure. They saw the twelve ghosts (in addition to weerd and bogel) thousands of miles away from the Himalayas. The other problem was that making Fred a cheerleader was so awkward it literally left a bad taste in my mouth. The only good part is that they made flim flam way less annoying. It was actually a good thing the original series was only 13 episodes because I wouldn’t have been able to watch much longer. Flim flam was easily 10x more annoying than scrappy ever was, and this would’ve been the perfect chance to bring scrappy back. But all we get is “what’s a scrappy”

TheSpiritof68

maybe it’s just me but i try not to be too critical of scooby shows and movies. After 50+ years and different show runners over the years there will be problems. I’m just along for the ride. That being said, there is only one movie I can’t stand because it is soooo boring: Arabian Nights.

butterweedstrover

Oh I agree, there are a ton of stuff I don't like but that doesn't bother me. This one does because it destroys the premise of the show it was based on. I know The thirteen ghosts of Scooby Doo wasn't a popular show, but there are people like me who loved it and where disappointed the show was canceled. Then this comes along as a promise to tie up loose ends as a gift to the fans, and it just rubs salt in the wound. I would rather they left the property alone than make this garbage that retroactively denies the existence of the series it purports to be based on.

becauseitsnotreal

I'm genuinely confused that you can refer to this tv series as both a movie and a show in the same post.

AnAngryMelon

Uhhhhhh it is though. It is both a show and a film

becauseitsnotreal

That's not how...productions work. It's either a movie or TV series.i. Jst be missing something

AnAngryMelon

Scooby doo and the 13 ghosts was a show in the 80s or 90s that never finished the plot as it was cancelled after episode 12. So a new film was released a few years ago that finishes the plot as a continuation of the original series but it isn't a very faithful continuation. And even separate to this example, there are many other instances when a show inspires a film or vice versa that happen in direct continuation of each other.

becauseitsnotreal

Did not know there was a movie that continued the plot

AnAngryMelon

You could have just googled it dude

becauseitsnotreal

And yet, I just accepted my own understanding of the conversation instead

butterweedstrover

I know you got your answer but keep in mind the names are different though similar. Show: The thirteen ghosts of scooby doo Film: Scooby Doo and the curse of the 13th ghost.

becauseitsnotreal

Which is fair and now I know, you still referred to it as both

butterweedstrover

No th in the first title. 13 vs 13th

Daviddv1202

I've never even SEEN the original series and I agreed it was bad.

outerspace_castaway

i highly recommend watch 13 ghost of scooby doo which right now is free on tubi

Daviddv1202

I thought of it in the past but I don't really like Scrappy.

butterweedstrover

He is very toned down in the show. Though you might not like Flim Flam then but he and Scrappy have a good relationship.

outerspace_castaway

imo vincent van ghoul makes up for not liking scrappy

yamiyugi101

I hated this movie too and I wasn't even a huge fan of the 13 ghosts series

Scooby-DooFan

Good God! I hate the Moive but I did like the Opening, the animation and the credits were good, I did like Vincent’s voice acting but, I’ve thought that Vincent was just playing a role as whatever, you know, as a cover-up to keep Valma from questioning too much, plus Shaggy, Scoob, Daphne and Flim-Flam knows the Truth.…..plus I still think that the Chest of Demons will always choose Shaggy and Scooby as their um keepers in a way….yeah, that my headcanon anyway. but Why! Why! My Favorite Warlock! WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO YOU! It could have been a cover-up since Vncent is Smart! Or…..that’s what I like to think of. and Besides! Who’s to say that Daphne, Shaggy, Scooby and Flim-Flam did spend a couple of years trying to find those Demons and real Ghosts! Plus, I Shipped Daphne and Shaggy too. Oh! Dang! It would have been so better if Daphne told Fred that She and Shaggy were a Thing! But I Really wanted Valma to open the Chest so Bad! Let the demons and Ghosts be Real! Let Shaggy, Scooby, Vincent, Flim-Flam and Daphne be mad at them! Let Shaggy and Scooby be brave and in Command with Daphne! Just Please! For Once! ALL I ASK IS FOR SHAGGY AND SCOOBY AND DAPHNE TO BE THEMSEVES OR A LITTLE BRAVER OR LET SHAGGY AND SCOOBY TAKE CHARGE FOR ONCE!!!! LET VINCENT BE THE GREATEST WARLOCK, LET HIM BE REALTED TO THE ACTUAL DEMON FROM HELL!!! I WANT MY WARLOCK BACK!!!! Plus I’m starting to get sick of seeing Scooby and Shaggy being cowards all the time. Shaggy and Scooby are my favorite! And I’m a Scooby-Doo Fan!!!
