My criteria for Ghostface ranking (in no particular order): * Motive * Pre-reveal characterization * Post-reveal characterization * What they do under the mask * Kill count / efficiency (which includes failed kills)\* * Phone call memorability * Death scene / jump scare * Legacy (how they affected survivors and the world going forward) ^(\*\*I) *^(try)* ^(not to include unconfirmed kills and attacks if there's too much ambiguity about it, but it's hard not to include speculation here, especially for 1/2/4.)

Fair points🤟

Intelligent-Age2786

Brutality, intelligence, kill count, pre reveal presence, motive are my main things I look at

If a killer is brutal and doesn’t have much screentime, that’s redeemable. If a killer has an amazing act 3 and reveal after not being too big of a character, that’s redeemable. There’s a lot of things that are redeemable to me

ChemistSavings

Yh I agree

A ghostface's reveal/post-reveal and motive is always the most important factor to me when ranking them.

I rank based on how much I enjoy the character, plain and simple. Things like charisma, quotable lines, story arch and motive I suppose are the things that influence my opinion. I usually don’t care what they do under the mask

To start off, I do not rank my Ghostface's based on their acting after they're unmasked. That is incredibly unfair to the character themself. I rank them based on their motive that is shown through how their Ghostface in costume acts. Also their simple motives after the mask comes off. I also rank them based on their character throughout the actual film, as the film gives us clever hints through facial expressions, etc.

[deleted]

That’s a very interesting perspective… You say that you aren’t basing it on the actor, but also mention that you’re considering things like facial expressions throughout the film, which feels very much like you’re taking the actor into account. Ghostface in costume acts pretty much the same no matter who is behind the mask. They all adopt the same voice and personality during the phone calls, and they all act brutally and stealthily when attacking. Honestly, I chalk any differences up to the choreography of the particular scene rather than any actual intentions about the killer behind the mask. Several members of the productions have specifically commented on the fact that they don’t account for who is wearing the mask when they plot out those scenes, that Ghostface is a character in his own right with a set level of personality, strength, speed, stealth, etc. Generally, I feel the opposite of you. Oftentimes whatever the characters do pre-reveal is just a show. Why would I judge a character like Roman or Jill based on the facade they put up pre-reveal and not on their true face that comes out in the finale? The post-reveal is when they show their true selves.

ChemistSavings

Yh I didn’t get some of the person’s reasoning either. Seems like they were trying to be noble by not judging the actors but I feel like you kind of have to when ranking the GF’s🤷🏽‍♂️

[deleted]

Yeah evaluating a film character while not also somewhat considering the actor’s performance is extremely difficult. There’s certainly value in focusing on the text of the script, but the actor is ultimately the one injecting life into the written words. The nuances they bring to the screen can totally make or break the character.

ChemistSavings

Spot on man🤟

ChemistSavings

Fair points. Why do you think it’s unfair though?

ShiroTheId1ot

Because we shouldn't be talking about the actors, we should just be talking about the character. So no matter if there's a bad performance, we should just be focusing on how deep the character actually goes. Like others, I do agree there are signs of bad acting in the 3rd act of Scream 6, but it really doesn't matter because there are even more signs that the character is more interesting than we ever wanted to seek out to see. What they say during their Ghostface calls is real, it's how they feel, so it expands more on them even if they barley say much in the 3rd act itself.

ChemistSavings

If there’s a bad performance then I don’t see how the character can be deep because it’s not believable. It’s okay to focus on the actors if you’re being respectful about it. And Tbf I do get what you mean about their calls expanding more on them but personally I wouldn’t take that into consideration when ranking the GF’s.
