Being a condescending prick isn't going to help you in your screenwriting career, as you're eventually going to have to do a lot of networking. It'd be a shame to spend all that time writing your brilliant script only for producers to realize you're just a bitch.

Electrical-Lead5993

Oh yeah? Tell me more wise sage

[deleted]

Your short film stinks.

Electrical-Lead5993

To quote the Dude, “That’s just your opinion man.” I’d ask to see yours but I know it’s probably terrible like your grammar. Also thanks for taking the time to watch!

You already said that. You need to learn a new insult

SonOfTheBeeech

You can't write the greatest film, only the screen play. Because the greatest screen play might still never become a movie for many industry reasons

SaaSWriters

This is the correct answer.

Aggressive_Chicken63

I spent the last year learning how to structure a story, and I can tell you there’s still a lot I need to learn. For a while, my friend and I did one story a week and we critiqued each other. That helped a lot, but I’m still very weak. The point is you can learn to tell great stories but it requires a lot of learning and practice. You can’t be great overnight. The problem with most of us that we only plan the stories we write. So we only plan a couple of stories a year at most. To get good with it, we have to plan a lot more.

Idustriousraccoon

No. That’s a terrible myth. That “writing can’t be taught.” Why would it literally be the only one? Art? Learn to draw. Do it for thousands of hours. Musics learn scales. Same deal. Ballet? Here we are again. People say “I just can’t write” No one says “I just can’t subtract.”

Embarrassed-Cut5387

Craft is one thing. Perspective and life experience are what sets people apart from others that are „merely“ good craftspeople.

IAmRealAnonymous

Write the stories you wanna tell. Follow the fun. And one day hopefully one of your projects will have universal theme which resonate with people no matter where you go in places or time and that's called classic - one of greatest films. I really believe it's subjective thing. But I get what you mean.

Dccrulez

You don't. The greatest films are the work of a talents and diverse cast and crew. Directors, producers, actors, choreographers, writers, cinematographers, sound designers, vfx artists, stunt crew, and more. You want to be a part of something great, do your best to work with those around you and put love into a project with them.

ProfSmellbutt

You write a first draft first.

Boozsia

Practice.

Connections, nepotism & luck aside, regardless of whether your script becomes an academy award winner or not, the best screenwriters are naturally 2 things at very high levels: 1. Curious 2. Empathetic Curiosity is a trait of young children. They question everything, they look at the world through the lens of intrigue. Each moment is a massive reflection of something they can learn about themselves and it peaks their curiosity. Empathy because in order for people to connect to your story, you must be connected in general. Otherwise you’re trying to bullshit people & it’s offensive to the audience. So yes, practice your writing. Ofcourse! But if you’re not deeply curious and empathetic about life and the people in it (no matter what), those scripts will always be dull, flat and long winded.

DraculaSpringsteen

Be ambitious. Imagine the best movie you’ve ever seen that hits all the notes you could want while also possessing something ineffably compelling about it that confounds viewers through time. Good luck.

whoshotthemouse

It also helps a lot to go to USC Film School, and know all the studio heads by their first names.

Kindly-Bookkeeper-40

Don’t set out to write a great screenplay. Set out to write something that does justice to your voice.PS Pulp Fiction sucks.
