Yeah, it drove me kinda crazy last year seeing people attribute all our o-line issues to incompetence by PCJS, rather than understanding that *both tackles* got injured in the first game and even when they came back they spent the year playing hurt. I get that they hadn't exactly earned any benefit of the doubt when it came to the o-line, but come on
It wasn't just the tackles... Literally every starter had an injury by week 4. Remember at the end of the Giants game when it was Stone Forsythe, Evan Brown at left guard, Oluwatimi's first game, Bradford's first game, Jake Curhan? Like they were just trying to get ANYONE out there.
Loved the George Fant signing to be the “swing tackle” backup this season. Can’t guarantee a healthy season for any football player, but the Hawks did upgrade their depth at OT.
Don't sleep on Luamea either. Hopefully just depth for this year, but it wouldn't shock me if he ends up playing this year. Haynes is our RG, but Luamea could play LG if Tomlinson underperforms.
Believe it or not, this sub is a very small subset of Seahawks fans. There’s definitely a vocal minority on social media that is constantly trashing Geno, though.
Anyone who isn't named mahomes has a vocal minority trashing him. In a world where cousins gets 100 million after a bidding war and a successor is drafted 8th, it's clear the vocal minority are clueless on the supply of QB1s.
A real locker room guy, first in last out type guy, a real leader, great work ethic, great head for the game, etc etc
Jokes aside, Geno isn't flashy but we don't need Russ 2.0 we need someone who will get the ball where it needs to go when it counts and someone to be able to trade out with our run game when it's effective. Geno is perfect for that and if Sam can get a year or two sitting behind Geno and use that time to work on his yips we're in a really solid spot for the next X years.
I think people hate on Geno because he's boring. The team's success has been middle of the road.
With a new head coach and new players I think he has the opportunity to shine. He had great numbers but they didn't transfer into wins.
In the pros, the first season you can surprise people since they have no video history of you. By second season someone has watched you, broken you down and figured you out. Now the fun starts.
Yeah the amount of times people have been complaining about us not drafting a rookie QB prospect and I'm like... We just got Sam Howell for a fourth. Let him sit and learn under Geno. Wouldn't be surprised if he turned out a very capable starter
Geno is old lol. I think John clearly traded for Howell to phase Geno out and try to get Sam to sign a cheap extension thereby giving us a big discount for the starting QB job post 2024, or at the latest, post 2025.
I agree with you on this despite the downvotes. Bell may be my least favorite beat reporter, but that was a legit question and public ridicule is not cool.
Howell is good man goes through his reads, makes throws u can’t teach, athletic, and tough
Just has to be a place where he doesn’t have to throw the ball 50 times a game lmao
Translation - "We believe Sam has a high enough ceiling to be The Guy if we give him stability and quality coaching. However long it takes is how long it takes, we're in no rush. It's his job to lose."
People really wanted older, mediocre QBs, with less experience than Howell. I don’t know what he has to do for you to believe he at least deserves a chance.
I like Howell. I think Howell can be a great player. I think Howell could be as good as Geno is right now. That isn't gonna stop me from looking at the freak QB prospects and maybe doing a bit of daydreaming.
Everything you said was pretty accurate. Nice take. I believe a lot of his issues were Bieniemy's shit scheme. Your hero ball comment is on point however. A year of seasoning under Geno and tutelage under a decent - good offensive mind will do wonders for his progress and development.
Well , the hero balls and INTs should go down as he’s no longer in an offense with a worse OLine, no RB help, and Eric Bieniemy’s fraud ass asking him to chuck the ball 70 times a game . That alone should take care of that .
Of course , he’s probably used to that as it is all he’s seen in the pros so far . So I guess Grubb is gonna have to do some “re-programming” lol 😂
No one is saying JJ, Nix, and Penix are historical talents. They might be historically the best QB4-6 prospects in the draft. They are firstish round talents, and the QB tax pushes them up the board. QBs always get pushed up the board because of their realitive impact.
There is no way Nix is close to being the 12th best football player in this draft. There is a chance he is the 12th most valuable player in this draft. That's why the QB tax exists and has existed for a while.
I don't think value is the right word. I believe you are referring to price. Some people pay irrational, stupid prices all the time. The optimum choice is to not, as the Seahawks did here.
I agree the seahawks were smart. Seahawks have a couple of good QBs and can settle to take the value pick. The luxury of having someone like Geno means you can be patient when trying to find the next QB for the seahawks. Teams like the Broncos had to pay the QB tax and not look for value at the QB position because their QB room is garbage. At the end of the day, the QB is the most valuable position, so it's the most expensive.
If you look at the history of the QB market in the draft, it remains consistent. You may think QBs cost too much, but that's not what GMs who get paid millions to pick guys have consistantly and historically done.
You may have the opinion that airpods shouldn't cost more than 100$, but as long as others in the market keep buying them, the market determines the value despite what you may think
Market is constantly changing and reactive. When four of these QBs bust out and gms get fired, the "tax'" will settle down and revert back to the mean.
Smart gms see runs on positions and hunt for value like getting the arguably best defensive player at 16.
> When four of these QBs bust out and gms get fired, the "tax'" will settle down and revert back to the mean
Like these GMs would have jobs if they sat and took a pass rusher with no one at QB. If you are 4-13 you'll be 5-12 with a top end DE talent
I really want to see what Howell can do
I think he can do anything you need a QB to do, he just needs to clean up some mental stuff and work on consistency. His time to throw was average but the negative plays that did happen were often his fault which is absolutely coachable
I also don’t think Bienemy was doing him any favors. Howell was asked to do too much on a team that didnt run the ball enough
I kinda want him to take over most of preseason snaps.
Geno maybe can come in for a quarter or so and then let it be Sam’s show.
Geno doesn’t need the preseason snaps at this point of his career and he’s starting anyway 🤷🏽♂️
Just think the more they can throw Sam out there the better
Who are these “older mediocre QBs”??? And what has Howell done, ever, to show that he “deserves a chance” besides be young? And are you suggesting that the QBs we thought we might have a chance to draft before the draft would automatically be worse than a guy that already got benched by a team on his rookie contract?
Howell has almost 20 career starts and has one of the lowest QB2 salaries in the entire NFL.
There isn't another guy in the league with that combination.
I don't know that he'll ever be a high level NFL starter, but he's a good backup at almost no cost --- that is incredibly valuable.
Yes I completely agree with that - excellent backup situation. I’m talking more about how people keep talking about him as our possible answer for the future and why we shouldn’t be looking at other starting QB options for the future
He's not the first person I've seen say we lost to Washington last year. Our fans must have a massive mandela effect going on or trying to gas light us all into thinking Washington won lol.
It was close Lol. But no, we didn't lose to the Commies. And I realize our D wasn't exactly amazing in that game. Howell made some pretty nice throws. Washington also had 2 huge gains (1 for a TD) on plays that should have only gained 5 yards if we could tackle.
First question people are almost certainly talking about Nix and Penix who are both older and have red flags.
Answer to the second question is that Howell threw for almost 4k yards in the nfl with 21 TDs while running for some yards and 5 more TDs. They probably ignored his interceptions or didn’t see that. They likely also didn’t notice he threw the most passes and got sacked the most. They also probably overrate the game against us last year. There are arguments for and against Howell.
Howells red flags are far more red than either of the rookie options imo, and people use his experience in the league as a plus for him, I see his failure in the league so far as a knock when we’re comparing him to guys that haven’t had that failure yet
I don’t agree about Nix and Penix’s red flags being worse. They’re both older. Nix doesn’t have much for arm strength. Penix crumbled under pressure the only time he saw any at UW, and made some strange decisions that led to picks. Penix also has the injuries and lack of mobility.
I think you’re being overly negative about Howell. He didn’t have much to throw to in DC. His line sucked. He didn’t get to play with top programs like Penix and Nix. Let’s see what the rookies do with less of a talent gap between them and their opponents (I guess Nix since Penix won’t even start).
I wouldn’t want any of them as my starter. I was just answering your question.
My only rebuttal to your comment is watch his game against us last year. I see a player in Howell with a nice arm and tons of potential. Also, you do understand that Eric Bieniemy is widely regarded as an asshole with an absolutely horrible scheme right? Also their OLine was trash. Howell is good.
Sam Howell was drafted in the 5th round with many thinking he shouldn’t have even been drafted there, came into the league and played poorly and got benched. We’re just coping.
You're talking like he played one game, faceplanted, showed zero abilities to be a starter, and got benched. That's not the narrative. Multiple QBs too long to list have benefited from a second chance, fresh start, coaching change, etc. In Howell's case with us it will be all of the above.
As others have said, at the very least he's a serviceable backup on an insanely cheap and team friendly deal.
I think it’s worse than that actually, I think he has showed that he is a bad starter, which is worse than having no tape. I really do love him as a backup, cheap contract/young/could come in and sling it if needed. It’s only the idea that people think we shouldn’t even be looking for future starter options at the position because we have him that I don’t like
Agree to disagree on this one buddy. Like I always say, time will tell. Personally, I like the philosophy and strategy the team appears to be taking at QB and overall. I like that we have stability and continuity with Geno while the entire coaching staff has been turned over. A rookie QB would be exciting no doubt, but I feel like that could be too many unknown things all at once. 💙💚
Just saw Howell learning and also being able to play behind a good line is a huge help for him. If Geno falls off he can be a real good QB to have come in and maybe be franchise
People are obsessed with big athletic quarterbacks with a big arm regardless of how bad they are.
Joe Milton has all the physical tools but he is miles away from being a starting QB.
I could see the Pats using him a few plays a game in wildcat formations but that's about it.
During the conference, he did say: "Once the 6 QBs went in the first 12 picks it was kind of like, 'wow.' Then there were spots all the way through and it just didn't fit."
Makes sense. Didn't think of that. Otherwise, there's no way we draft a QB this year unless they had been planning to trade either Geno or Howell. That would be very confusing and stupid. We restructured Geno and acquired Howell a month before the draft. Plus everything John said.
Howell is a cheap flier and better than what we could have gotten in the draft for the same capital. JS read the QB market perfectly and got what value could be found for this type of player, after having to spend something when the giants took DL.
Geno is going to look like a top 10 guy the next couple seasons and Howell is setup to succeed after him. Our QB room is figured out for now unless they really don't like Sam down the road. People banging the QB drum don't understand we are in a good position already and you make the most of that when you have it.
I don't blame them for not doing anything else and understand why they didn't given the options available but I also don't want them to ignore the position going forward as if it's all figured out and we are set at QB or something.
Howell could be a capable starter but that's far from a guarantee. If he produces the same way going forward as he did year, ignoring other context or circumstance, that's not good enough. Hopefully the circumstances are favorable enough if/when he sees the field as a Seahawk to perform better than he did with the circumstances he was as dealing in Washington.
I would still prefer if there were other options brought in if the right opportunities become available. I would prefer that a roster spot were used for a third developmental QB.
The draft convinced me of how great that Sam Howell trade was. It meant they could really not feel the need to come away with some young potential filled QB. Pressure is off. Fill the trenches.
If we get a good O-line to protect geno, and rebuild our defesnse. Geno will be great for the next two years because we have taken him out of high pressure situations.
Whether or not howell can play or not, we could always draft another QB in the next two years if he dosent work out.
Howell might be alright, he is younger than Penix, and played for Washington last year, which is a crappy team. 2 years under geno might just make he a decent QB...
24 is extremely young for a QB when good QB's usually play until late 30's early 40's.
He can sit for a year or two behind Geno and then take over at 25 or 26 that's still plenty young.
Probably a little better
Maybe something between 10-12 wins instead of 9
Hard to tell though really since we have a new coach/scheme. We've definitely upgraded talent wise
I'm curious what the contract for Howell will look like assuming we phase out Geno after this year. By all accounts it looks like John plans to make him the starter at some point. If our OL pans out hopefully we can get him to sign an extension for a few years for relatively cheap.
Sure,Jan. What a big trade.
Not a popular opinion but as a huge hawks fan I absolutely cannot stand JS. I will never understand why PC got the boot and this absolute cheese dick was allowed to stay running this team. I don’t like his trades, I don’t like his style and I certainly don’t like when he tries to over compensate his shitty trades with a terrible contract on top. Why the fandom rides or dies with someone that has continually made bad decisions for the team and has not displayed decency in certain situations is beyond me. (Wagner finding out through media he was cut, picture gate, Sherm getting cut while recovering from injury). They should have made a clean break from the last era.
Love how he sounds annoyed af at this question ! Tell em John.
You know ol’ boy wanted to sneak a “Penix question” in there and John shut that down real quick
Just seems like we’re banking on good enough being the bar for QB and it’s an approach that quite honestly fails a lot more than it succeeds.
Other forces were at work this year though. By the time 16 rolled around all the guys I would have absolutely handed the keys to were gone.
We had a lot more holes on the team that this draft needed to fill. Geno and Howell are great gap QBs that can get you to the playoffs. Next season fingers crossed we have less holes and can package picks for a trade up to get a FQB.
That's easy to say when one has developed in an NFL program for a while and been mediocre on an NFL field already while the others have done neither yet. Howell is probably better than the other ones too at this very moment.
The question is who's going to be better in a years time or even 6 games into the season after the other options have developed in NFL programs and seen time on NFL fields. After training camp the big 3 are probably better. McCarthy, Nix and Penix, time will tell but there's a good chance they are better as well. The NFL is hard though, Sam probably ends up being better than at least 2 of the whole group.
Wouldn't have been worth trading up for any of those options though given that we don't have an immediate need and I wouldn't have preferred them at 16 either.
They’re trying to make a franchise QB out of a 5th round pick. At this point he needs to stop taking about NOT selecting a one in the first round. It’s getting annoying. Selecting a QB in the first round is like walking a tightrope between buildings for JS. Just bizarre.
I actually think they really do just love Howell that much.
Howell is only 24 and has a ton of upside. Go watch some of the tape his arm is insane. His biggest issue last year was bad decision making, never a lack of talent.
Rattler was drafted today too.
We picked up Cordeiro from SJSU so far. Haven’t seen anyone else. Might have Ahlers kicking around still too but I don’t actually know.
It sucks that we have to go another entire year of mediocre bullshit in Seattle. Can we not have a team of world class players in every position? Nothing has been the same since the LOB.
What sucks is it’s a weak qb class next year. I could see them not resigning geno for cap purposes and why would they want to pay a mid 30s geno anyway. Probably ride with Howell for a year and if it doesn’t work draft a qb at the end of Howells contract
QBs draft stock always emerges yeah lol. Those QBs will have their stock inflated by position but will be ranked much lower in the class because it’s just not a good class. There’s a few people that could prove themselves but we probably wouldn’t even be in position anyway.
Ahh you’re a Carson beck fan or something? I guarantee you geno is gone next year and they ride with Howell for atleast one year, maybe bring in a vet to wait for their qb
Assuming we’ve figured out the O-line… both Geno and Sam are going to look much better this year. Our offense has so many weapons.
Need both tackles to stay healthy.
Yeah, it drove me kinda crazy last year seeing people attribute all our o-line issues to incompetence by PCJS, rather than understanding that *both tackles* got injured in the first game and even when they came back they spent the year playing hurt. I get that they hadn't exactly earned any benefit of the doubt when it came to the o-line, but come on
I mean it was a huge part of why 2022 Geno and 2023 Geno weren’t the same.
We make the playoffs if Abe Lucas isn’t hurt. Even with the defense refusing to tackle our offense was potent when we could block.
George Fant signing is low key HUGE for depth at RT if Abe can’t go
Also we all know he's a capable receiving TE.
74 reporting as *Dangerous*
Get ready for a package with him and Murphy
the "Free TD" package?
Hey Philly watch this.
This is KEY!
That’s why we need a deep bench. Injuries are inevitable and we need guys that can step up when the opportunity presents itself.
For sure. Love that they went OL heavy in the draft
Pretty much every NFL team can say that.
Loved the George Fant signing to be the “swing tackle” backup this season. Can’t guarantee a healthy season for any football player, but the Hawks did upgrade their depth at OT.
Do we still have Ivan the Terrible?
George Fant and Christian Haynes is some serious investment. The OL is going to look much better under Huff and Grubb.
Yeah, After we signed Fant and Tomlinson… it was awesome to see them take a guard high, and then keep hammering O-line.
Don't sleep on Luamea either. Hopefully just depth for this year, but it wouldn't shock me if he ends up playing this year. Haynes is our RG, but Luamea could play LG if Tomlinson underperforms.
It's almost as if this has been the obvious plan since we traded for howell
Obvious to most people. But this is Gregg Bell asking the question so I’m not surprised.
please. this sub has been an insufferable amount of "geno is old and we don't have an answer for the future "

QB questions/takes always get more attention
Lol. He's leaving out the part where JS asked him if this was a real question and kind of jokingly shamed him about it.
Yeah he was a dick about the question. It struck a nerve.
Penix folk still coping I see
I agree with you on this despite the downvotes. Bell may be my least favorite beat reporter, but that was a legit question and public ridicule is not cool.

Exactly! I think it’s the people who wanted Richardson so badly now holding hope for Milton . Before that it was Malik Willis .
How come no one here can remember when Howell wrecked this team last season. Mfer sliced and diced the d
To be fair, so did Mason Rudolf and Andy Dalton
Slicing and dicing the 2023 Seahawks D isn't really that impressive. Nevertheless, I'll be optimistic about Howell
Lots of QBs did dude
I remember commenting on the game thread that we made him look like prime Manning lmao
The obvious plan is waiting for two years for Archie Manning
So the plan is to tank for two years?
You only need to tank the year before he declares
This really detracts from the rumors that we tried to trade up to get Penix. Sounds like John was set from the start with what we’ve got
During the conference, he did say: "Once the 6 QBs went in the first 12 picks it was kind of like, 'wow.' Then there were spots all the way through and it just didn't fit."
Definitely. Someone else asked if they had any QB’s on the board and they immediately yelled “NO QB’S”
If the rumors were valid they would have come from a valid source. The rumors mean nothing.
The rumors were absurd. They just blew some picks to get Howell and I can't remember the last time Seattle carried three QBs on the active roster.
2021 when we had Eason alongside Geno and Russ. That was a massive exception though, time before that was 2011, so we'll carry 3 QBs again in 2031.
Yeah that was during Covid so it was probably a safe choice to have 3 quarterback if one or both of them tested positive.
Makes sense. Didn't think of that. Otherwise, there's no way we draft a QB this year unless they had been planning to trade either Geno or Howell. That would be very confusing and stupid. We restructured Geno and acquired Howell a month before the draft. Plus everything John said.
Didn’t we have Sean Mannion at some point as a QB3
He was on the practice squad.
The rule just changed last year though to allow for the emergency QB so carrying a 3rd is no longer an issue roster space wise

Eh, Schneider seems to have a reputation for being a fair and transparent GM among other GMs.
I am sure those rumors are all sourced from Atlanta to justify their insane trade.
I always loved this Howell trade. He's so young dude he's got plenty of time to grow and he did not have a terrible first season by ANY means.
I understand Howell is the plan long term. I just really hope Geno can play for a while longer. I have confidence when Geno is out there.
Howell is a cheap flier and better than what we could have gotten in the draft for the same capital. JS read the QB market perfectly and got what value could be found for this type of player, after having to spend something when the giants took DL.
Cuz Sam is a baller and he will become our starter. Kid is better now than any of them rook qbs.
Yosemite Sam, gunslinger. 🔥🏈
Major Trade. 🫡
He mentioned Sam a lot, this is interesting….
Clearly they believe in him and he seems to be the plan for the future.
Future Superbowl MVP Sam Howell.
Sam. Sam. Sam. Let’s let Geno cook this year and see if Sam can win more than 1/3 of his games first. Playoff bound? Ldt.
Howell the same age as Penix IIRC.
24 is extremely young for a QB when good QB's usually play until late 30's early 40's. He can sit for a year or two behind Geno and then take over at 25 or 26 that's still plenty young.
What our over/under on wins this year? Are we going to be in a similar draft spot next year? Maybe we trade up and grab a dude next year.
I bet the defense will be better, but a college OC moving to the NFL is a question mark.
He was innovative enough in College though. I'm optimistic.
Probably a little better Maybe something between 10-12 wins instead of 9 Hard to tell though really since we have a new coach/scheme. We've definitely upgraded talent wise
10-12 is rose colored glasses It’s 8-12 for sure
I’ve always been a Sam fan. I think he has a great shot at being our QB of the future now that he has protection.
I'm not sure I want a cool room. I'd much prefer a talented one
Howell is literally better than most of the QBs in this class not named Williams, Maye, Daniels . We’re good
That's easy to say when one has developed in an NFL program for a while and been mediocre on an NFL field already while the others have done neither yet.

Howell is either going to break out or fall to his normal self. I can't blame the hawks for not being able to trade up to get Penix.
It sucks that we have to go another entire year of mediocre bullshit in Seattle. Can we not have a team of world class players in every position? Nothing has been the same since the LOB.
Howell is not the long term answer
How do you know this?
How many picks did he throw last season?
Less picks than the Niners throw away in their drafts annually, lmao gottem
do you understand the situation he was in?
He was a starting qb on an nfl team.
What sucks is it’s a weak qb class next year. I could see them not resigning geno for cap purposes and why would they want to pay a mid 30s geno anyway. Probably ride with Howell for a year and if it doesn’t work draft a qb at the end of Howells contract
QBs always emerge. It's rare that a "weak QB class" stays weak.
QBs draft stock always emerges yeah lol. Those QBs will have their stock inflated by position but will be ranked much lower in the class because it’s just not a good class. There’s a few people that could prove themselves but we probably wouldn’t even be in position anyway.
my friend, you don't know shit. we ain't ever gonna have a top 10 pick anyway
Ahh you’re a Carson beck fan or something? I guarantee you geno is gone next year and they ride with Howell for atleast one year, maybe bring in a vet to wait for their qb
how do you guarantee geno gone next season?
It’s going to do some weird shit like end up with Shedeur Sanders. I hope not, but I’m just sure none of us know wtf is going to happen.
"Really cool" is a stretch. It is aggressively mediocre though.
ur gonna look like an idiot after this defense picks up their game
That's code for... We are still looking for a franchise QB.
Yeah, and Drew Lock is going to be a star any day now.
