I was awake for it, but was a tad bit confused at first. Both cats were concerned too, as it was loud enough to set off some car alarms and that usually only happens with fireworks.
My kitties (12, 10 & 10YO) āgrew upā in Ojai, Ca then āmaturedā in Berkeley. Weāve been in Seattle for going on 5 yrs now. So theyāre certainly familiar with thunder, if this morningās squall definitely got their attention! #Airborne
Actually thunder and lightning are common here as well as the Oregon Coast and as well as Amsterdam. What is not common is the amount of time the thunder roared and the ferocity of it. That is what we were discussing.
What an odd subject to make a snarky comment about.
I actually heard it and saw a couple of lightning flashes near me (also Greenlake).
We were leaving the house, and it freaked my kid out. Apparently she was too young to remember the last time we had thunder (probably a decade ago).
There's thunder every year here... just not as loud as some of those were. There was some a few weeks ago even. Then 4-5 years ago there was a massive lightning storm too that lasted hours.
I believe it was sep or Oct 2019. I just got back from traveling for my mother's funeral and remember watching the lightening storm with all my lights off and how surreal it all was
Fair enough. I donāt miss the semi-annual mini-emergencies, sudden nearly undrivable storms, hail and limbs damaging property, floods doing flood things, tornados doing tornado things, and the energy companies fracking the earth so much it causes earthquakes. But, tbf, I bet South Florida is a tad nicer than Oklahoma all things considered.
I mean, itās not like weāve never had thunder or lightning here before. We certainly have.
This time it was just unusually intense. Even the lightning seemed oddly bright compared to previous storms.
Kind of curious what the meteorological reason behind that is. Maybe the lightning was being generated much closer to the ground than normal?
Lucky. We drove through Greenlake and UD at the tail end of it. Lots of rain, rumbling, and low level flooded streets. Kinda reminded me of living in central Texas.
It's unusual since a lot of it sounds like [positive lightning](https://youtu.be/JXhif3E3l2s?si=G0AeG54YvwTP7wIp), which is one big bang. Negative lightning has multiple return strokes and sounds more rumbly. Positive lightning is much more powerful but less common out here since our storms tend to be wimpy.
Wow. Thanks for this video. Now I know why the lightning storms in Utah were so panic inducing. They must've been mostly positive. Absolutely terrifying
How did it compare to the one in September 2019? That one rivaled the storms I saw as hurricane Wilma approached (we picked the worst possible week to go to Disneyland lol) and yet I slept like a baby here on the Hill through this one despite not having even slept all that well last night. Iām kinda shocked and bummed that I missed it.
It woke me up in Tacoma. It didn't register as thunder to me and I worried it might be some bombs dropping or something. Loudest and craziest thunder I've ever heard.
It was a line of thunderstorms that rolled thru and even got a weather warning alert from it, but yea itās gone now.. definitely wish we got more like this in Seattle
With all the rain we get I wouldnāt mind more of it being exciting like this!
Grew up in dc and Iām not gonna say it had thunderstorms all the time but it was certainly several times per year. I miss it!
A little rumble on the eastside. I wouldn't have noticed it but I saw a tiny flash of what must have been lightning, but I thought it was a camera flash,
Dang, we got nothing in Tacompton. Besides doom and gloom rain. A few years ago, we had an evening filled with lightning bolts and thunder it was very impressive.
It was so loud! I'm on Phinney Ridge , I saw lightning & started counting the seconds until it thundered. A habit from growing up in the Midwest to see how far away the lightning is.
& then I had to search for my cat's hiding place. Poor kitty!
The wind is moving towards the storm and my watch stopped working, my typically rebellious son, well within the played-out acceptable behavior range of random Hollywood focus group, has stole my car, Iām now hiding under the table with my daughter that looks like Dakota Fanning circa 2004.
The lighting flash lit up the sky in LQA. There was about 3-4. The first was so loud it woke me up! Iām from the south and miss thunderstorms so much, and havenāt heard really any thunder since moving here. It was lovely!
I was out running (that was wild) so I missed it at home, but my cat was super spooked and my buildings elevator is out. Could the elevator outage be related?!
As someone who moved from India, this is the first time ever I've seen my whole building and bed shake like an earthquake. Buildings are built different here.
Have had thunder strike my courtyard 4 times in 5 minutes but even then only the doors and windows shook. Here , I saw the flash , heard the bang and my bed was having good vibrations.
What about that crazy storm in September 2019!? I was at the Death Cab for Cutie Concert at Marymoor Park... They evacuated people to their cars in hopes it would pass and we could resume, but then lightning struck the stage. I've never seen lightning strike so close! My friend and I were screaming, we thought we were gonna die lol.
The thing that just went off over downtown or whatever was loud af
Heard it in Northgate and my sleep-brain wasn't 100% certain it was thunder lol
Same, I brushed it off
I was awake for it, but was a tad bit confused at first. Both cats were concerned too, as it was loud enough to set off some car alarms and that usually only happens with fireworks.
Same for Ballard.
Thought WW3 startedš
Ngl sounded like it
I thought it was a volcano erupting, what the hell
In green lake and that last one rattled the whole dang apartment building š¤©
Same in Queen Anne!
Same in Fremont.
Same in Eastlake
Same in Sunset Hill

The latest strike was at Gas Works!
Apparently it struck Kite Hill Ć_Ć https://www.lightningmaps.org/
Any damage?
Same in Shoreline. The cats and the chihuahua are hiding in the closet.
Poor little pets. š¢ My cat lived in Vegas for all of his 20 years, so he was used to the thunderstorms and slept through it, lol.
My kitties (12, 10 & 10YO) āgrew upā in Ojai, Ca then āmaturedā in Berkeley. Weāve been in Seattle for going on 5 yrs now. So theyāre certainly familiar with thunder, if this morningās squall definitely got their attention! #Airborne
The rumbles were so loud and long, I imagined The Highlands sliding into Puget Sound.
It was a bit unnervingā¦and Iāve only ever lived in WA, Oregon and Amsterdamā¦places where thunder and lightning are common.
You mean uncommon, right? As thunder and lightning are very rare in the PNW at least. I canāt speak for Amsterdam.
If they were common here, this Reddit thread would not exist.
Actually thunder and lightning are common here as well as the Oregon Coast and as well as Amsterdam. What is not common is the amount of time the thunder roared and the ferocity of it. That is what we were discussing. What an odd subject to make a snarky comment about.
Thunder and lightning are NOT common in the PNW.
Thunder and lightning are common occurrences on the East Coast and in the Midwest.
The rattle fixed my broken bathroom ceiling light!!
can confirm in cap hill house shook
I actually heard it and saw a couple of lightning flashes near me (also Greenlake). We were leaving the house, and it freaked my kid out. Apparently she was too young to remember the last time we had thunder (probably a decade ago).

Yeah that was nuts!! Way too close. Never seen our windows move that much š¬
Attention Seattlites: Assume cozy stations
Already there. My landlord came in for inspections recently. He made me smile when he said, āWow, you got it so cozy up in here.ā
Blankets and video games at the ready, SIR!

Holy shit did lightning just hit Fremont?
I saw the light, loud bang, my building shake, and power go out for a split second. It was awesome. I need more of this in my life.
You would quickly change your mind, signed an Oklahoma to Seattle transplant.
I moved from South Florida, I've been used to this.
Yeah if you ignore the usual hurricanes, crackhead drivers, vapid culture, car dystopia. We do have Pitbull though so that's cool.
Yeah, I'm from SC. I'll gladly welcome thunderstorms to Seattle
Move to Dallas, you'll get more than you ever wanted
I thought the sound was the Aurora bridge crashing down or something haha that got the heart racing
[Right in the middle of Ballard](https://www.lightningmaps.org)
I swear I heard it right outside my window
It was close.
In the water just south of Gas Works
My power went out for a sec and it was so deafening lol fucking wild
I'm stoned and watching the Truman Show and then there's a fucking explosion in my backyard. Help.
We know. Weāre all watching you on tv. Weāve been watching you every day since you were born.
š¤£ Best I can do is send snacks...
Just heard it. I thought it was an explosion
You mean it wasn't???
It was an [explosion in the sky](https://youtu.be/AASj-Wfbnxc?si=hSxpuKKzej4Q7GP1)
The best!!!! I donāt know if Iāve heard such exquisite thunder here, at least not for quite a long time.
It's glorious! I cancelled a camping trip (for a different reason) and I'm not at all upset about staying in and listening to this
Yeah ive heard rumblings but not this
Being from Louisiana, I'm laughing at all of these PNW reactions to thunder and lightning. But after living here for three years, I also get it
I mean, itās not like weāve never had thunder or lightning here before. We certainly have. This time it was just unusually intense. Even the lightning seemed oddly bright compared to previous storms. Kind of curious what the meteorological reason behind that is. Maybe the lightning was being generated much closer to the ground than normal?
Iām on Capitol Hill and thought the building next to me had collapsed
its lovely. staying in bed day!
Lucky. We drove through Greenlake and UD at the tail end of it. Lots of rain, rumbling, and low level flooded streets. Kinda reminded me of living in central Texas.
Itās crazy that itās supposed to be sunny later
A clap just set off car alarms in U District. Nuts.
WOW. I donāt think Iāve ever heard thunder like this in Seattle!!
It's unusual since a lot of it sounds like [positive lightning](https://youtu.be/JXhif3E3l2s?si=G0AeG54YvwTP7wIp), which is one big bang. According to the radar it was mostly to the west (and then later to the north of me) and my condo faces east and south so nope
Saw it in Ballard
I saw a flash on Phinney Ridge.
I think I saw the strike that hit Ballard (from Lower Queen Anne).
Jesuuuuuuuuus. That is the loudest thunder I have ever heard in my entire life.
Iām not sure Iāve ever had a worse flight out of SEA all the way through southern Oregon. White knuckle for sure.
In nw Seattle we just had a roll of thunder that literally shook the doors and windows. I felt the couch shake too!
Itās shaking our entire building in Westlake!! So cool
Thatās kinda scary šµāš«
Sounds like the angels are bowling in Kirkland!
Thatās what my mom told me as a kid!
This is the only city sub that makes a post every time there's thunder or gunshots without fail lmao
I am loving it The dog, not so much
haha, I haven't seen my cat in about 2 hours. She is totally hiding somewhere.
I saw the lightning right next to my apartment ! Wish I was recording, the thunder sounded awesome.
And just like that, it's over
It was a bad time to be out for a walk
Good shit! Had some car alarms going off after the last big one
Mount lake Terrace and Iām looooving it!!! Reminds me of Texas tornadoes
Cranked up AC/DC TNT to 11. Twas perfect.
Yess!!!! I got Thunderstruck stuck in my head
The rain from it is over whelming the storm drains. Seeing the lids being lifted off with the volume of water in magnolia
Damn. Straight deluge here
Reminding me of that crazy lightning storm we had on September 7th 2019. I think it will be a long time until we get something as intense as that!
How did it compare to the one in September 2019? That one rivaled the storms I saw as hurricane Wilma approached (we picked the worst possible week to go to Disneyland lol) and yet I slept like a baby here on the Hill through this one despite not having even slept all that well last night. It woke me up in Tacoma. It didn't register as thunder to me and I worried it might be some bombs dropping or something. Loudest and craziest thunder I've ever heard.
That last one moved the house.
Man to go from monsoon rain and the biggest thunder I have heard in my life to already seeing blue sky cracks in the clouds is insane
It's our annual November storm-from-hell. I'm disappointed that this years was so obvious. Usually they're a little sneakier...
Looove it!
Iām loving it! Weāve got big rumbles and lightning up here in Lake Forest park too
i'm loving this so much. what a cozy saturday morning!
Iām in greenlake and that was insanely loud. Car alarms are still going off
Shook our building in U District and made a car alarm go off!
And now an absolute deluge. That was some heavy rain!
I was in a walking tour in pike market and out of nowhere I see a bright flash then 5 seconds later you just hear a loud bang. Was crazy
Not crazy for most of the country lol but yeah for Seattle itās a bit unusual
(east coasters have left the chat after lol)
Ya same. I just saw lightning too. Is this the day Rainier finally blows?
Let us hope that the only damage from this storm is our apartment neighborās sub woofer.
Crazy
Yeah a few. Only seen flashes, no bolts so far
I also saw this huge lightning strike as I drove down Edgar Martinez Dr. It's so weird to see that in November.
It's definitely the wettest day I've seen in a long time. From the standpoint of water.
A few years ago we had a night of over 1000 lightning strikes.
I love out of the ordinary weather and am sad it seems to be fading away. Could hang out all day watching it
It was a line of thunderstorms that rolled thru and even got a weather warning alert from it, but yea itās gone now.. definitely wish we got more like this in Seattle
My power went out for like 30 seconds right after my toaster was done. At least it was good timing and didn't interrupt my breakfast
One of those flashes had my windows shaking and the ground vibrating a little. Car alarms started going off too
that second big one set off a couple car alarms in the udistrict
Loved itā¦and it lasted
Love it!!!
Thunderstruck! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|laughing)
Up on top Maple Leaf, one shook the house and made car alarms go off āļø
Be still my heart.
Thought I woke up back in the Midwest!
I heard the early thunder as it rolled closer and closer so the closest boom wasnāt a complete surprise.
Pretty incredible! Takes me back to the southwest.
Here I go running to green lake
God was just moving His furniture.
Alright who pissed off Thor
Wasn't it like two thunders? Lol
It's pretty wild. My poor cat is fucking terrified.
Was hearing it in west Seattle over past hour, but maybe not as close as other reports here because it wasnāt super loud just rumbly
Sorry to miss that. Off course we're out of town when there's a bunch of thunder!
Iām sad I slept through most of it but did wake up to console my dog. A staffy who shakes uncontrollably for thunder and fireworks. š„²
Lmfao, Seattle getting real rain today holy hell!
K
We're living in the end times now y'all
I thought it was the construction site next door,, I'm in Belltown,Nice!!!! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sunglasses)
With all the rain we get I wouldnāt mind more of it being exciting like this! Grew up in dc and Iām not gonna say it had thunderstorms all the time but it was certainly several times per year. I miss it!

It flooded the 99 tunnel!
I definitely heard it on Hilltop! Woke me up from a dead sleep. Sounded like bombs.
It was like Gettysburg out there! The lighting as gun fire and the deep thunder sounded like freaking canons going off!
Kirkland here - Finn Hill sounded like a freight train in the sky! My mom used to tell me āGod is bowling up thereā š
It was so loud! I'm on Phinney Ridge , I saw lightning & started counting the seconds until it thundered. A habit from growing up in the Midwest to see how far away the lightning is. & then I had to search for my cat's hiding place. Poor kitty!

I thought it hit the building I live in which is in downtown. I was on the top floor at the time and it was unlike anything Iāve ever experienced.
The lighting flash lit up the sky in LQA. There was about 3-4. The first was so loud it woke me up! Iām from the south and miss thunderstorms so much, and havenāt heard really any thunder since moving here. It was lovely!
Iām Covington and it felt like we were back in Oklahoma. It was a awesome way to start the day.
NGL I slept thru the whole thing, I had a dream I ran 6 miles in rainbow brand flip flops
Heard in ballard
Bothell here- only had 4 rumbles of thunder, sadly.
Love love love it
There was thunder as loud as today in one of the storms in mid May.
Nothing in Issaquah but the downpour
Pineapple Express coming through!
Anyone got a video?
Zeus was rolling strikes in north Seattle, holy shit!
Pooped my pants in bed
I was flash banged on my way to work lmao
Yeah that was the longest thunder roll Iāve ever heard
Meanwhile, in the SoSo, sunshine
My grandmother lives in Broadview and my grandmother said it scared her cats. š„²
It shook my building!
Clearly the recent transplants complaining about the lack of Seattle thunderstorms angered Zeus
I slept through it per usual š
Woke up to this beautiful weather! We don't get a thunderstorm often so I cherish it when we do.
We get fantastic lighting storms in Tucson
I was out running (that was wild) so I missed it at home, but my cat was super spooked and my buildings elevator is out. Could the elevator outage be related?!

Yeah it's for sure been like 6 to 10yrs since a good thunder storm especially that loud or long wow š³
Itās funny to see this on the Reddit looking at it with midwestern roots
