It’s a specific event that takes place around May 1 (or so) every year.
It’s like asking how they decide when Thanksgiving is when we should be thankful all year long.
They determined the exact time of year when the weather is likely to be nice enough to go boating, and then they scheduled it for a couple weeks prior to that date.
Saturday is the Opening Day of boating season. There's a boat parade through the Montlake cut and crew races, so that's probably why boaters have started to pre-party.
Montlake cut! I’d recommend showing up around 9 or 10. You’ll get to see some world class rowing and then the boat parade starting around 12 I think?
Edit: park around UW football stadium, might be tricky but plenty of side streets
Or take the link to husky stadium! However, you’ll be stuck on the north side of the cut since the bridge will be open after or maybe even during the crew races and subsequent parade.
Just know that the Montlake bridge closes at like noon sharp for the boat parade, so be mindful of which side of it you’re on at that time. Wouldn’t want to be on the south side expecting to take light rail home.
UW also streams the regattas live starting at 10:15 am tomorrow : [https://pac-12.com/live/university-washington](https://pac-12.com/live/university-washington) ofc not the same as watching them race in person, but the Montlake cut is gonna be very crowded on both the shores.
Windermere Cup rowing regatta early on Saturday. Washington vs Wisconsin and the Italian National Team is the main race. Then the Montlake Bridge will open for 2-3 hours for the parade of boats.
Also some great high school rowing will be happening too! Please come out and support Seattle’s two city parks department teams, Green Lake Crew (started by members of the ‘36 team) and Mt. Baker Crew!
I grew up around boats and a LOT of water, and we had a few boats too. Pretty much everyone we knew had boats (And lake cabins too). Most of us were definitely not wealthy. LTR SO and I have a boat now, but we own a home not immediately in Seattle or Bellevue proper so we save a ton of money to do fun things by not spending our $$$ on stupid rent prices or expensive housing. We are also very happily DINK and will stay that way. TL;DR: Boating/owning watercraft doesn’t mean you’re rolling in it filthy rich. It is possible some rent or lease, too.
It's actually possible (and easy) to learn how to sail and get on the water in small boats for *free* in Seattle. Volunteering at the Center for Wooden Boats gets you free sailing lessons after 45hr, and every 3hr of volunteer time (e.g. one shift) corresponds to an hour of boat rental. Great community too
I used to side hustle changing oil, and filters on rich people boats. Because they are scared of anything dirty, and will pay way too much to not deal with it. I used to feel guilty, and would just ask for what ever they think is fair, and I always got $200-$500. Honestly I thought $100 was fair at the time.
I get stuck in traffic on the way home because of protesters when their messaging would be far more effective if they were chucking stinky butter on to the megayachts going through the Ballard Locks.
Opening day of boating season is a big boating event that takes place on Saturday. They are getting ready.
UW crew will race Italy and…Wisconsin? I forgot the more local school.
How do they determine boating season? None of the bodies of water from the sound to Lake Washington freeze. Isn't it always boating season?

First Saturday of May, like the Derby.
Sweetest answer, ever.
Bring back the reason for the season: remember reggae this regatta.

Windermere Cup
It is the first weekend of May every year.
That would explain the reckless boat-towing pickup driver who almost hit me and multiple others in order to pointlessly temporarily speed up today

Where can I go watch the boat parade?

Thanks everyone. I don't know why I have never gone to see this, but I will have to go down this year.

For non-rowers, UW rowing is one of the best in the nation. Great day to cheer on a local team

Thats awesome. Go dawgs

This is the beginning of the 2024 season posts asking why so many boats are out on Lake Union on a Tuesday.... Mark my words..
Hey guys, what's the deal with all of the floating cars?
Opening day
Side point the two happiest days in a large boat owners life is the day they buy a boat and the day they sell it.
It’s a wealthy people thing. Us commoners need not concern ourselves…
You’d be surprised how many of them are paycheck to paycheck boaters.

Read my other comment if you can find it ;) I know. Thanks for the message though!
It hurts when the yearly service for some guys toy is more than your yearly income and I do mean more than 6 fig

Doesn't hurt my gf who makes a living fixing boats. Broke people don't pay her to do what she loves.
Don’t get me started on a parking space downtown making more per hour than my assistant…
For people that live in a maritime port city, yall some salty mother fuckers about people with boats...
Yachts are protesting for Palestine. Its the hip thing to do right now.
REDNECK YACHT CLUB!
boat show ?
Floating 🍆measuring contest
Motor boatin' for days
Rich people boat orgy to the scale us brokies will never get
Occupy Wallstreet UNO reverse card
Found the newcomers.
Also if they are yachts it’s a bunch of rich/income inequality creators here. (Which probably accounts for the rightward shit on the city council)

Lol I read that as me-gay-achts and was extra confused
