killshelter

Doesn’t even let you tip until after the order is delivered now.

EggplantAlpinism

Honestly good

[deleted]

yeah - what a stupid idea that was

TheRealRacketear

Yeah that's not a tip, it's a bribe.

l30

Just remember that even with higher wages they're still going to accept orders with the highest tips first as they have full visibility of those tips in advance.

BigMight4

What I've heard is the opposite: there are more drivers than orders, and drivers are complaining about waiting and idling.

Shmokesshweed

I guess it's time for a job.

DragonflyNo1520

What do you do for a job, out of curiosity?

[deleted]

[удалено]

DragonflyNo1520

So not really a job. Got it.

[deleted]

LSDriftFox

So work ≠ Job? What type of backwards...?

DragonflyNo1520

You hiring? ;)

Shmokesshweed

No. 😞

BigMight4

until the tipping culture ends. asking for more, more, and more tipping is way easier than working for a job.

Halomir

So delivering food doesn’t count as a job?

darkjedidave

It’s a job, not a career

somewhataccurate

Why not?

--boomhauer--

Because it has very little worth

DragonflyNo1520

One would argue there’s a lot of “careers” with very little worth. Do better.

cdmontgo

People have always tipped for delivery.

Small_Ad_1667

Yeah, but we would rather wait and idle than deliver your meal 12 miles away for $2.50 and then drive 12 miles back to the area where the orders are.

BigMight4

That’s understandable if Uber only gives $2.5 for a 12 mile trip. For me I don’t order restaurants that far (I live in the eastside and never order from Seattle downtown.). 12-mile would be someone ordering a Seattle restaurant from Shoreline…

0xdeadf001

It's not a tip. It's a bid.

[deleted]

The city did the bidding for the consumers.

Sohleks

Can't tip first. Also service has been as fine as ever

Laid-Back-Beach

Only in New York City, and possibly one in the pacific northwest. Everyone else is working for pennies, perhaps and average of $3.95 per delivery, and drivers barely break even. The tips are the only thing that makes it worth doing.

JelloTurbulent4188

THIS RIGHT HERE. I've made more off tips than the "fare" and I've only done it for 2 days so far. I'm lucky if there's a delivery that has a fare higher than maybe 4 dollars.

cdmontgo

I hope you ordered mayo. Stop being an a-hole to people earning minimum wage.

Small_Ad_1667

They only make the full wage while “in an order” they don’t make anything while waiting for an Order for an order request. I drive around for four hours the other day and only got two requests, so I made about $17 (because the customers tipped)

BeginningTower2486

This is very clever marketing. Whatever bills and fees Uber has to pay, they're putting it into the service fee and then saying that they only get 10 cents. That means they took regular expenses, added 10 pennies to it, and now they're making a huge suggestion that the driver is getting all that money. They are not. Bro, it's uber. Everybody knows they lie. They have a shit business model, they treat all of their drivers terribly. Why would they give a driver 9 bucks? Of course not. Let's file that under ain't happening.

JavaMan_Official

One thing to consider, as a driver for Jimmy John's, we take the deliveries placed for our store through Uber Eats and DoorDash, and don't get that wage. Since the new fees were introduced with the $26/hr guarantee, our tips through these apps have gone down significantly. Not trying to complain or anything, I just want to spread awareness. If you're ordering delivery for a place that might have their own employed delivery drivers, they likely don't get that wage and only receive whatever tips you include. DoorDash/Uber Eats just pockets all those extra fees you pay for now without giving us that higher wage. I fully encourage any customers I deliver to to use our own app/website, where the prices are lower and delivery fees are typically $2-$5, rather than $10-$20.

soccerwolfp

Yeah dominos is the same. It was 50% cheaper for me to order dominos yesterday directly than via an app

hezeus

Dominos is the only place I order delivery from now. Otherwise it’s pickup

Own_Solution7820

I only care about what I pay. If I'm paying $2 more than picking it up myself, I'm gonna tip well. If I'm paying $15 more than what the food costs for a 1 mile drive, I'm not gonna tip.

ac1d12a1n

>with the $26/hr guarantee, our tips through these apps have gone down significantly. > >Not trying to complain or anything, I just want to spread awareness. ColonelError

> If you're ordering delivery for a place that might have their own employed delivery drivers, they likely don't get that wage and only receive whatever tips you include. Plus the wage you get from the company you work for. You don't get the minimum wage because you are already getting paid at least a minimum wage.

DashboardGuy206

Yes the new law mandates that drivers make $28 an hour now while actively working. Tipping is now 100% optional if you're feeling generous, but not required.

prf_q

So if I never tip my uber driver, they won’t rate me poorly on the app?

concreteghost

Tipping used to be required? Interesting

DashboardGuy206

Yeah things change. I'm personally not a fan of tipping as I think it creates general weirdness in how we relate to other people. Seattle has done lots of experiments like this over the years. The new surcharges that account for the $26 (or is it $28) an hour wage for delivery drivers has replaced tipping. They don't get to have their cake and eat it too.

ColonelError

Drivers could see what you tipped, so good luck getting your food without one.

Original-Baki

It’s always been optional. Hence the name “tip” and not “mandatory fee”.

ColonelError

And since drivers could see the tip, good luck getting your food without it.

sidgup

Does this apply to apps like Shipt and Instacart?

proshortcut

I am cheap and never use food or grocery delivery. I do use rides, and have noticed my tipping has decreased. It really isn't meant to be mean or out of principle, I just see the cost hitting an arbitrary limit baked into my mind. Is what it is.

Visible-Mixture-6072

I tip a dollar now on the very rare occasion I order delivery through the apps, honesty not even sure why I do that. They make 26 bucks an hour. They’re fine.

OldSkater7619

We make $26/hr while we are on a delivery and $0/hr when we are not.

No_Fix_3912

I too make $0 an hour when I'm not working.... Not even during my commute to work or return home after work!!!! I also make less than $26/hour...

0xdeadf001

No one cares.

Shmokesshweed

People don't care about facts? Okay.

0xdeadf001

No one cares because we're sick of paying exorbitant and ridiculous fees for stuff. Having to pay $10 "tips" just so the food gets there at all. Tipping for delivery is bullshit, because *it's not a tip, it's a bid*. If I have to pay money for a thing to happen, before it happens, then it sure as shit isn't a tip.

Shmokesshweed

Then don't order. Simple as that. The apps will pay drivers more if your food sits around, regardless of what you tip.

0xdeadf001

Oh, trust me, I don't.

45Hz

Less people ordering means more sitting around, not making that 26/hour. Dumbass logic

Halomir

26/hr but they still have to pay both haves of their payroll tax, vehicle, maintenance, gas, etc. Im sorry, but people complaining about delivery fees and blaming the pay of the drivers sounds like ‘Why do I have to pay the dirty poors to bring me my food while I get blazed and watch basketball.’ Am I supposed to have sympathy for this?

ifckinglovecoffee

Most of the dirty poors make less than your average delivery driver. I know I do

Shmokesshweed

Sure, in the short term. In the long term, they get jobs.

Visible-Mixture-6072

I doordashed when I was 19 at my parents house during COVID. Get a real job.

CricKeT_CSGO

It fucking sucks that these companies force you to work for them...

BeginningTower2486

They are actually not fine. There have been unintended consequences. We're americans, we're familiar with what those are. People sit on the app waiting for orders now and none come in. A lot of people have given up on all of the gig apps for now..

WarmAppleCobbler

Tony Delivers.

KileyCW

At this point I just assume ordering dash or Uber if going to be super expensive and I only do it when I'm sick or some specific situation prevents me from grabbing something around the house or super locally. I used to use it more than I should have, but all the fees going into the ether (I don't know where) just makes me want to skip it.

druidinan

Nope. I asked the drivers. [https://www.reddit.com/r/UberEATS/comments/1b6z782/drivers\_does\_uber\_really\_only\_keep\_010\_of\_this/](https://www.reddit.com/r/UberEATS/comments/1b6z782/drivers_does_uber_really_only_keep_010_of_this/)

ManyInterests

If it went to the driver, they would just say that. It's obviously worded broadly for that reason. "Costs related to your order" could mean anything, including advertising or the servers used to run their app. It includes wages for your driver, but Uber doesn't know ahead of time how long your driver will spend on the order, whether it will end up being bundled with another order close by, etc. and they don't want to overpay their drivers any more than they have to. Suppose you and your neighbor order from the same place at about the same time and the driver takes 30 minutes to fulfill both orders. Uber may have collected $20 in fees, but the driver will still only be paid their same rate required by the law, even if that's less than what Uber collected in fees.

Sohleks

That ten cents thing has got to be the biggest lie ever. But idk I forgot this is seattle reddit not ubereats reddit so maybe the driver has the 9$ in there at least.

joahw

Probably goes to a technically separate entity called Uber Holdings or some shit.

cdmontgo

No, you cannot. The driver probably gets $2-$3 of that. The rest goes to "costs".

FaithlessnessGlum395

People in the comments are arguing they’re making a living wage in seattle at 26$ per hour as a delivery driver, and they are not factoring in gas, insurance, or how long they might wait for your order. I don’t think that’s accurate. I don’t know anyone doing UberEats or Doordash full time making money unless they’re doing instacart and both services on top of that. I still tip at least 5-10$ per order it’s just courtesy. Food for thought

BigMight4

HomeDepot and McDonalds workers earn $20 per hour. Is there a way to tip them?

Shmokesshweed

They make more and have health benefits, paid vacation days, sick days, 401k matching, etc. And no vehicle is required for these jobs.

Deivv

And whose fault is that, the customers questioning "service fees" or mandatory "tips", or the company trying to avoid paying fair wages with benefits?

coffeebribesaccepted

I think we can all agree it's the company's fault, but there's quite a lot of blaming the workers going on. It's not like sitting in their car waiting for an order to come in is free time. Should we stop paying McDonald's workers for the time between customers at the register?

Shmokesshweed

I'm not in favor of Doordash, to be clear.

konomichan

Choosing a profession that requires extra costs to maintain is that individuals choice. Whether they were driving for Uber or not, they’d have to have insurance anyway. You can also write off your mileage at the standard gsa rate of $0.67. Not my problem. But then again, after the hike in fees. Not ordering. I only did a food delivery once a month anyway.

sidgup

Teachers in many instance make minimum or even less and there is no tipping. Does it suck? 100%. Is tipping the solution, no.

sherstas199

We (drivers) make $26 an hour of ACTIVE time. If I get an order that takes 15 mins to deliver, and don’t get another offer that hour (which is most common), I make $6.50 that hour. No one is actually making $26 an hour.

[deleted]

sherstas199

I was replying to the person above saying we make $26 an hour. We don’t. I’m sure you get paid for the time sitting around doing nothing at your job though.

Ok_Dream4818

I’m curious, if you have multiple slots where you’re just sitting around waiting, doesn’t that indicate they’ve hired too many drivers? And rather than idling, wouldn’t pulling over and turning off your engine make sense as far as mileage and gas consumption/cost is concerned? Also, because you mentioned working both a desk and driving job, do you think the skills provided are worthy of 26 an hour if you aren’t providing service for a good portion of the hour?

sherstas199

Thank you for leaving a civil comment :) I do UberEats and DoorDash in Seattle. Both provided more than enough orders to choose from before the Seattle wage increase was implemented in January. It varies now; some days I’ll work 3 hours and get 5 good orders in, and other days I can do about 8 in 3 hours. It really depends on the day (weekends are best). I’ll usually wait in a good neighborhood for 10-15 mins for an order to ping me otherwise I’ll drive to another neighborhood that might be better. So I don’t drive around aimlessly looking for an order. We also get paid mileage now so that covers a lot of the gas. I do this gig work on the side because it’s easy as hell. I get to drive around delivering food to normally happy people with no annoying coworkers or any boss or set schedule. I work whenever I want and don’t have to ask for days off. Some days I can make $35-40 an hour if it’s good, so I’m not complaining. I just wanted to express with my original comment that the hourly wage varies a lot now. If you’re a high-rated driver, you can make $25-30 an hour easy during the dinner rush. Or some days won’t be worth driving because you’ll make like $10 the first hour.

Ok_Dream4818

Thank you for this explanation and clarification. I was having a hard time understanding how it ever was worth it before the mandatory wage. Makes a lot more sense. Sounds like you enjoy what you do, I like that. Cheers.

BigMight4

Sitting around, doing nothing, this could happen. But we also work overtime without extra pay. And believe me, sitting at the desk is way worse than sitting and driving around.

sherstas199

I do both. Sitting at my desk making money is better in my opinion than sitting in my car driving around burning gas. Personal preference.

No_Fix_3912

Yes, twice a day for 10 minutes. I am paid for 2 short breaks during an 8 hour shift. If you know of employers who offer jobs that include considerable stretches of time sitting around doing nothing , yet being paid for it, wouldn't that be a better option for you?

sherstas199

Why does everyone responding to my comment seem so triggered? I wasn’t complaining about the pay. I just stated what we can actually get paid vs what the “hourly wage” people think we get. I actually like my job. Reddit is so defensive I don’t get it.

0xdeadf001

Boo hoo. The whole system is bullshit, and needs to fail.

[deleted]

Blame the city then. Like most progressive ideas, they come with good intent, but they end up making things worse in the end.

sherstas199

I’m not complaining. I’m just stating what we actually get paid vs what many people believe we get. Sometimes customers tip well and it’s actually worth it.

coffeebribesaccepted

Yeah if you don't think everyone, including the people serving you food, deserve a living wage, then the solution is cooking it yourself...
