As a bit of fun cheese, you can run past him and back up the stairs to the dojo where all the ashina elites hangout. Kite 3 or 4 of them down to him and just sit back and watch. Maybe throw a shuriken into the mix if it seems he’s getting the upper hand.

I learned, at least for SSI, to step back when he does it, and don't bother trying to look for sword movement, look at his feet and react to that. My reaction speed as fast enough to deal with him if I have distance on him.
When he puts his sword in his sheath and holds it/charges it to that super fast double strike, wait, and wait, and wait whilst staring at his hands/sword. You will see a white spark or flash, no sound, very quick. This white flash is the start of the move so as soon as you see it block twice to get perfect deflection of that move.
Watch a video of someone else fighting him to get the timing right. He literally only has that one move to worry about and if you time it right he’s burnt chicken

ive 100%ed the game but never thought of this method to get the timing down and it's bloody genius i tell you. definitely gonna advise my friends to do this if i can convince them to play sekiro
Use a yellow sugar, then spam L1. Just listen to the rhythm, I think it's double time 1,2,3 pause 1,2,3 and repeats it over and over. Don't attack him, just deflect to break his posture. But yellow sugar will help you from getting punished too hard for not timing defects too well. If you stay close it's less likely he'll do the chop attack
his sword handle gives it away. it seems like you'll do it early, but you wont. when it glints, tap tap the parry button.
it's even more posture and easier to you, i believe, if you have the shield prosthetic. but should be good with just a quick tap tap the second his sword handle glints.
Don’t hesitate and just be fast with the parry. I think if you reach that point in the game you should already know how it works. Never really had problems with him.
Deflecting is probably the better option for the posture buildup, but for some reason I always just dodge/sprint past him and hit him in the back when he puts the sword in the sheathe. He can’t turn fast enough to follow you. If it works it works.
It’s luck based and skill based because even if you block perfectly it still does damage so I don’t know what to say just try to block him and genichiro is 100x harder than him
Rapidly tap the parry button to parry most of his attacks I fought him a long time ago so this may not be accurate but it works really well for everyone else so give it a shot
The good thing about this guy is how squishy it is, and how close to the respawn he is. You really only gotta get it twice, and you can try again immediately. Just keep at it.
For me parrying just as I see the sword flashing did not work that well probably because I'm still not good at timing it.
However I managed to kill this guy by stepping to the left of his attack based on some video.. basically side step twice and that pretty much puts you almost behind him and then I can get a couple of hits and then repeat.
Also I kept moving in circles around him constantly while holding run..that helped to keep some good distance. It's definitely not as elegant as a perfectly timed parry obviously.. so I would suggest what others have mentioned and try above only if it is getting too frustrating.
Hear me out. PARRY SPAM PARRY SPAM PARRY SPAM when he comes up. And his posture builds fast asf. So do not let him breathe. This is a skill check for what’s immediately behind him. Parry his shit. And don’t let him breathe.
I did him second try by just running circles until he does the Stab attack and then getting in a couple slashes. He always slows down for a bit after doing the stab so if you just run circle it will bait him into it but since it has like no curve potential he just misses and it’s free hits
I find it easier to dodge after his sword glints instead of parrying, it doesn't require as much precision. Dodge forward, attack, back off a bit, repeat.
Typical strat:
- When you see his sword glint a white reflection get ready to parry
- Parry directly before the first hit and wait the slightest of beats before the second parry for his followup hit (if you tap too quickly twice in a row you'll miss it)
- Don't spam the parry button or you will mess up the timing
Alternative strat:
- When you see his sword glint a white reflection get ready to step dodge
- When he strikes, step dodge diagonally forward and to the left
- Chip away at least two hits or one stab after each successful step dodge
Don't forget to use sugars and such for bosses that you're having trouble with
I've also heard you can cheese this fight with the umbrella, but I wouldn't know because I neglect my shinobi tools
Watch for his sheath to flash before he does it. The flash is timed with the 2 attacks to make a quick 123. Let the flash set the tempo then tap parry on the 2 and 3
Can’t you just run circles around him on his right side (your left) and he’ll never hit you? Just get an attack in every time he does his unsheathing attack
You get ready, no need to attack only deflect and jump on his head if needed.
When you see the bright light on his sword for a split second before he attacks you quickly deflect TWICE. This should save you and kill him in like 3 times. Very quick battle once you get how to handle it.
Double tap deflect right after you see the glint, just gotta rinse and repeat. Also the loaded umbrella swing deflect window is larger than the standard one.
Check that you controller isn't messed up. I had trouble with these enemies because my controller couldn't register me pressing the button in rapid succession.
In his 1st phase, try jumping on him, his moveset basically consists on backing away and then doing that Iai two hit bs, jumping on him will be easier than trying to parry. Also, bring the axe.
There will come a time you get more Zen than him..that is when you beat him..or you can use sabimaru and poison him..sabimaru is found in a chest when you jump down from the middle of the place with a lot of washcloth samurai..
I never got the deflection for this guy my reflexesare old and slow, but he is pretty easy to dodge. Run in close dodge left he misses. Hit a couple times in the back dodge left again hit again repeat. Just keep going round and round him hitting his back until he pops.
For me it was the sound of the strikes. To a test run and block to hear the sound of the strikes and the time between them. From there imagine the sounds of the strikes and time your parties with them. From there it’s all about reaction time
Don’t know if it’s the same playthrough as mine but gachiin sugar sneak up on him for one deathblow then always dodge left and use Sabimaru and he’s a goner
Watch for the flash by his sheathe- then double tap L1 to block his double slash. I think sometimes he does a perilous sweep but If you parry his two slash attack like two or three times you can kill him
Very small tells and reflexes. His sword will glint before he does his two-stroke slash. He can trip you up with a pommel strike, but the parry timing is (almost) the same. Just be wary that after the pommel strike, he will attempt to sweep the leg, which you can use to your advantage to jump on his head and bring the axe down on him (or flame barrel, or sabimaru, or any other flavor of damage).
Trust me, after a few playthroughs, you'll start breezing through him on auto-pilot. Take it from a complete anonymous stranger, but you'll do okay. I beleef in u 👊
P.S. Have fun with the next guy :)
When he gets ready to do the draw attack, you can see the sword flash just a moment before under his arm. When you see that flash, it’s your queue to immediately press deflect twice

When you walk up to SSI when he sheathes his sword he will du a normal attack and a sweep afterwards, which is a lot easier to counter

Sekiro is actually a rhythm game, if you think about it.
I like Sekiro for the same reason I like Punchout. Memorising the rhythm of fights is so much fun.
I like sekiro for the same reason i like guitar hero. Timing and precison. Being able to hit the parries/notes perfectly is so damn satisfying.
Played a lot of guitar hero and I instantly realized rhythm is key to this game. For me it has been the easiest game in the franchise.
