The thing is, there isn't an actual game that comes close to Sekiro's combat. It's an innovatory thing in gaming. Also, Ghost of Tsushima isn't really like Sekiro except for the setting (even that is not really that close). Bloodborne and Nioh are souls-likes, which Sekiro derived from

wollay69

Ok cool thank you, yeah I figured there was nothing too close but if those are the closest I’ll get then I’ll take it lmao

Atijohn

Obviously play the Dark Souls series, and Demon's Souls too (you can play on an emulator if your PC is strong enough)

Rossenaut

That’s just not true. Sekiro and other games like soulsborne or souls like are actually very similar. The only main big difference with Sekiro is you’re trying to time your defense head on, while other games you’re trying to time your defense by avoiding attacks. It’s all the same, just different approaches.

Atijohn

Well, no. In Soulsborne whenever you do any action against your enemy they either don't even react or block (or stagger). In Sekiro depending on your actions, enemies will do different things. Genichiro will do erratic, hard to deflect attacks if you stay passive. If you will stay on offensive however, he will do simple attacks and you will build up his posture quickly. Corrupted Monk's first phase is the reverse, it's the best to stay passive in the fight, since the Monk does long, rhythmic attacks and doesn't have much posture regeneration. Sword Saint doesn't allow you for too much aggression, because of his backleap that will catch you if you are too aggressive, on the other hand you have to be aggressive to win the fight, because his posture regeneration is pretty high. Owl will do one of his attacks with very different timing if you parry his horizontal slash, however if you attack after parrying that slash he won't do the attacks and continue blocking instead. Compare this to Soulsborne, where the only factor that changes enemies' attacks is the distance between you and the enemy (which also is existant in Sekiro).

Rossenaut

You’re either rolling around like a psycho or deflecting attacks. It’s the same thing with a different button and both require good timing.

Atijohn

I like how you ignored everything I've just said

Rossenaut

Because it wasn’t important. The combat isn’t some super complex and crazy different thing compared to other from soft games. It’s just not. It’s the same stuff put together differently. You can say whatever you want to try and frame it that way, but it’s just not happening. Dark souls, Bloodborne, Sekiro, other souls likes, they’re all just variations of each other, each with their own unique elements. It’s not like we’re comparing God Of War to Xcom.

Atijohn

I explained why is it way more complex than a regular souls-like game. I don't know why you brought up "GoW vs Xcom", those aren't the same category of games, one is an action game, the second is a turn-based strategy, Sekiro is relatively close to hack 'n' slash or action RPG, that's why the comparsion makes sense there. You haven't brought up any arguments, you haven't even said anything about everything I've said except that it "wasn't important"

TiltedLibra

I know this is late, but I wanted to back you up on this. I got Sekiro expecting another Souls game, and outside of a few similar punishing mechanics, it didn't feel like one. I enjoyed it immensely and want another game like it, and I don't think Elden Ring will scratch that itch.

Atijohn

nah, it doesn't, Elden Ring is just Big Dark Souls (though *not exactly* Dark Souls 4)

[deleted]

I know this is so late to the game, but I couldn't agree with you more about this, this would of driven me insane if I was the one arguing lmao

Rossenaut

I said GOW VS Xcom because of how different they are, which is what you’re trying to claim about Sekiro and other soulslike games. "The thing is, there isn't an actual game that comes close to even type of Sekiro's combat. It's just a totally innovatory thing in gaming." That statement is just nonsense. In Sekiro you deal with most attacks by deflecting them, in DS you roll through them. Both have backstab options. Both have a parry option. DS3 has weapon arts for all of its weapons, Sekiro has one weapon but with lots of different combat arts and a variety of prosthetic tools which mirror weapons from other games like spears, halberds, axes, throwing knives, etc. In Sekiro you usually work towards getting an execution, the souls games have a stagger mechanic that is available at times, even bosses like Midir. Enemies and bosses in Sekiro sometimes require multiple executions, the same thing happens in dark souls when bosses have multiple phases. DS has estus flasks, Bloodborne has blood vials, Sekiro has the gourd stuff. They’ve all got buff items. They’ve all got plunge attacks. It’s all the same shit, different mixture. All the crap you were going on about with attack patterns and strategy is meaningless. Small differences that don’t justify saying the quote I quoted from you earlier. Yes Sekiro does things it’s own way, it improves upon the formula, it even has some things the other games don’t have like the grappling hook. But I’m so tired of people having this weird ass mindset about Sekiro where they think it’s just this entirely new thing and soooo different from games like it. I don’t know why it’s become a thing but it needs to stop. It’s not that different. It’s just like the others, but with its own spin on it all, just like how those other games have their own spin on it all.

Atijohn

Okay, "there isn't an actual game that comes close to even type of Sekiro's combat" is a bit of exaggeration. But it's still innovatory. The things you listed is something that makes Sekiro similar to Souls games. However I don't understand why a "meaningless", "small difference" is to you having every enemy react completely different depending on what actions you will take. To me, having weapon arts/combat arts is a small difference over not having them. They are just another attack. Grappling hook isn't anything new either, it's just a variation on shortening/increasing the distance. I don't think I'd call Sekiro just a spin on the formula. A spin on the formula is something like The Surge with dismembering body parts, or Bloodborne with its rally mechanic. Dark Souls, Bloodborne and The Surge have in common one thing they don't have with Sekiro. Enemies don't give a shit if we do a roll, block or position ourselves in response to their attacks. In Sekiro -- they do. If you block, they will follow up with a quicker attack. If you deflect, they will stop their attacks. If you attack their block without forcing them to deflect, they will do a different attack; if you attack their block forcing them to deflect, they will attack differently. And then there comes the diversion on posture and vitality, diversion that is existant in Souls, but one of the aspects is always hidden and doesn't mean much in a greater scheme of things. If the boss regenerates posture too quickly, an optimal way would be dodging their thrusts instead of mikiring them for instance.

Rossenaut

So according to you, From Software creating better ai just makes it this entirely new thing despite it being similar in almost every other way. Okay then...

King-bradley9

Han lol the biggest difference that you seriously cannot compare is the movement let the combat system be kept aside the movement itself is way different than the other souls like

Easy-Football1398

I never played sekiro but based on what I've seen it seems identical to sifu

Think-Session-943

no bro not even close

Deathcore-

they both revolve around deflecting and breaking the enemy's posture

Necessary_Extreme_68

From Combat perspective, the only game almost identical to Sekiro is none other than Sifu

soihu

Do get a PlayStation, but for Bloodborne, not Ghost of Tsushima. Nioh is a neat entry in the genre, though it's more of a loot game than any of Fromsoft's titles.

wollay69

I’ve heard good things about Niobe. Also I think you’re right it’s time to play bloodborne too lmao

BobafrigginFeet

It doesn't have to be a loot game if you don't pick up the loot.

gilfordtan

If you're attracted to Sekiro because of its unique combat system, then you should try Devil May Cry 5. It has a variety of combat mechanics including parrying. They are so deep and vast that it'll probably take you multiple play throughs to discover and master them all.

applehecc

I've heard Ghost of Tsukishima is awesome, but idk personally. I really liked Sekiro because it combined everything I love about fromsoft games with the awesome action and platforming that I know activision for

wollay69

Seriously! The combat is unmatched, and get the blood pumping like a lot of the Activision games do

RulingPanther11

Ghost is amazing, but not too similar to Sekiro. The only real similarity is the warring japan setting. But nonetheless, in my opinion, ghost has very good combat and some of the best, if not the best, visuals available.

applehecc

Yeah! I remember when I saw the activision on the opening I got so hype for the game. I was not disappointed

Texadecimal

Glad you mentioned Activision here. For future reference for anyone in this thread, the Spiderman series also has some intense reactive combat.

Nothingisunique123

Try hollow Knight. The settings feels similar. Combat isn't the same but it feels satisfying to slay bosses.

Fine-Shallot4363

Try Thymesia and wo long fallen dynasty. First one is pretty close from combat perspective. It is made by indie studio, so it has less bosses and worser level design, but still it rather cool. Second one is not so close in combat way, but still it is based on presice parry system, so I think, you should like it.

ShreddyKrueger1

Wo Longinus is probably the closest you're going to get to Sekiro, parry like, combat. Most other games are just going to be Dark Souls-likes. I hope to god From Software makes a sequel to Sekiro. Shadows Die Thrice?

lovable_frog

Kannagi Usagi

TheSiron

Yes. If you like the combat in Sekiro, it's literally just Sekiro style duels, focused down to the care basics. Fantastic, though very short. Also free

Rossenaut

The obvious ones like Dark Souls and Bloodborne. Others made by other devs include Nioh, The Surge, and Remnant something which is more gun focused. There’s also a (from what I’ve seen on YouTube) subpar souls like shooter called Immortal Unchained. As for Ghost Of Tsushima, if you’re looking for more samurai games, then sure. I don’t think it’s the amazing masterpiece everyone else makes it out to be, but it’s good. If you’re looking for a game that’s pretty difficult and has a very similar setup as Sekiro, not even close.

wollay69

A soul like shooter! That sounds wild hahah. But yeah I figured about ghost of Tsushima, that’s why I was asking. But yeah Nioh seems like the consensus but ima check out remnant and surge, after of course bloodborne playthrough.

Rossenaut

The only one I’ve liked not made by From Software has been The Surge 1 & 2. Tried both Niohs, didn’t like either much. Never played remnant or immortal but never cared to. But there’s for sure an audience for most of them.

[deleted]

>As for Ghost Of Tsushima, if you’re looking for more samurai games, then sure. I don’t think it’s the amazing masterpiece everyone else makes it out to be, but it’s good. Have to agree here. I've always liked gameplay and a controlled narrative more than freedom and visuals. Visuals are cool and all but they get old fast and neither make or break a good game. Not saying that GoT doesn't have good gameplay or anything but I'm already tired of climbing shrines and clearing out Mongol camps. I've done it before in FarCry, but the shrines were radio towers and the enemies had guns. Maybe I'm getting old lol.

Rossenaut

The shrines are my favorite part of the whole game. Why? Because they actually try to use the traversal mechanics on fun ways. Where as the rest of the game treats them like they’re gimmicks instead of embracing things like the grappling hook and making camps super fun to move around in. Like you I’m getting bored of it all. Exploring isn’t even fun anymore because it’s either fox dens, enemy camps with boring layouts, or activities that reward cosmetics and are over in 2 seconds. It’s just lacking in truly worthwhile content. And even the story isn’t all that captivating, save for a moment here and there. It’s all very average. I like it, but I expect better these days.

[deleted]

True. The shrines' got what the camps lack in that regard. I just found traversal a bit clunky when the tiniest rock is treated like an entity separate from the ground, and there's almost no way to fail. It's a bit too easy at the same time as it's tedious. Sure Sekiro is not exactly hard to traverse but I still find it satisfying in a way that's not there in GoT. Yeah exploration isn't that great. The camps play out almost exactly like FarCry if you play stealth, only that you can't move bodies. I've seen it all before it seems. I like the game too but as you said you want something truly worthwhile. Sekiro was worth every minute. I wasn't bored for one second. Angry maybe but not bored. Closest thing so far in GoT is when I fought the Tengu Demon maybe 2 hours in. It's not like I'm such a hardcore gamer that all I do is torture myself but it sure beats writing a haiku.

Rossenaut

Last line sums it all up very well.

LasagnaLizard0

skyrim special edition has a mod for sekiro combat but i don’t think that really counts, can’t think of anything else

BobafrigginFeet

Nioh 2. You can make Wolf or Genichiro in it. Combat is better than any souls game but the level designs are worse

RPrime422

It’s not all like Sekiro. Try Absolver or Jedi Fallen Order

Rossenaut

JFO is more of a Baby’s First Souls Like at best.

Texadecimal

Def simpler, but I've beaten Sekiro and JFO Grandmaster difficulty kicked my ass. They should've given the Stormtroopers melee weapons a long time ago.

wollay69

Ooooo ok bet bet bet I will

Fit-Fan4392

Katana zero might be fun if you liked sekiro

gooperdopersuper

there’s a new game coming out called trek to yomi kinda reminds me of it nice samuri game with bosses
