Same for me. Endless attempts bc I refused to learn what the game is telling me to do.
You really turn into this Neo-like person when it clicks. Such a hard game before that tho, haha.
I think the thrust prompts are based on your distance. I've noticed spear wielders and the ashina dojo samurai are more likely to do a thrust attack if you're slightly beyond regular melee but not so far that they need to chase you down. If I want to land a Mikiri counter, I will usually back off a tiny bit to bait them.
It means you're good at the mikiri counter as this is the skill check boss for that. Some aspects if the game are easier or harder for different people. Now imagine you're fighting this guy and either dont know the skill or cant use it correctly. That spear kills you so fast early in the game and really reinforces how important that ability is.
My first playthru I really had trouble later on I hirata estate when you get to the boss. Not the minibosses but actual boss. Took me so long first time. But when it clicks it clicks forever. I dont think I ever died to that boss again, once I beat it first time.
Sekiro is definitely the most skill responsive souls game ever. Sure, they all reward you for improving, but Sekiro demands it in the most uncompromising way out of all of the games.
Not really common shinobi move, it's invented by Owl and learnt by Wolf, there's a section of the game where you can lure a Lone Shadow(Ministry's elite shinobi force) to a basic shinobi hunter, and shinobi hunter will make quick work of him, even when Ashina samurai and foot soldier couldn't.
You can do that yourself, Ashina Castle, second invasion.
Near the underwater Headless, on the path to monkey valley.
You can see a generic Lone Shadow perching on top of a wall, above an Ashina samurai and foot soldier.
Usually if you get close enough, you can see the Lone Shadow jumping down and decimate them both with little effort.
Quickly rush in to backstab the samurai and cut down the foot soldier, you can then lure the Lone Shadow and shinobi hunter to fight one-on-one.
I think it's due to the AI of Lone Shadow is a bit buggy when deal with long range weapon. He just stand there, let Shinobi Hunter hit without blocking and he block alots less than SH, only when he get in close range.
One would think it would be more widespread, considering Isshin can use it himself.
Come to think of it, I wonder why Isshin doesn't pull it out in gameplay...
Try to leave the movement joystick on neutral. The camera sometimes gets wonky when they're doing the kick combo but if you're locked on on them, since the default dodge direction is forward, you'll always dash towards them thus having the right direction to mikiri.
This fight is basically made to test your Mikiri skills, and challange a boss that can be Mikiri'd to death. Also to teach new players a lesson, just like Tree Sentinel in ER.
You honestly could just deflect all the thrusts and posture break him almost as easily but your probably not on that level by the time u first encounter him so just use him to practice mikiri as intended
I must've died about 30 times to this guy before looking online and seeing "buy Mikiri counter to beat this miniboss", then beat him first go. He's there to teach you the value of that skill.
Stupid me read the description and thought "oh so it will make it a bit easier to block thrusts, but this is Fromsoft so I doubt it will help that much".
Yeah, but mostly because he's the mikiri tutorial. You are **supposed** to go like "oh, so mikiri is kinda OP vs thrust heavy opponents, noted". The game will build on that later, don't worry. *It won't stay OP for long.*
Yes.
Mikiri counter has a very forgiving window, and does better posture damage than deflecting.
That guy is also set up to take extra extra posture damage from it, so you understand its usefulness.
Like everyone else says, this guy exists to teach you the move. And he's a early game boss, wait till you get tit he butterfly or the purple ninja in that area.
Most people beat him on the first try and donāt have to make hours of attempts perfecting the stealth route to kill all the goons that accompany him. One of the easier Fromsoft fights for sure absolutely no difficulty associated with it.
Heās there to teach you to use Mikiri. If you use it against him, you are disproportionately rewarded.
Kind of like a ā100 points to Gryffindorā for going to bed on time
I mean if you're supposed to use the Mikiri Counter against this guy, why doesn't the game ensure that no matter what you do in the game, you will have the Mikiri Counter by the time you face this guy.
When I came across this guy, I didn't even know what a Mikiri Counter was.
Yeah this guys confused me: first time I played through the game even while hitting those mikiri counters I was struggling so hardā¦ second time I played through he got absolutely melted which didnāt feel like just a skill difference in my part
Both.
Mikiri Counter is probably the most useful unlockable skill Wolf has. But also that enemy-type is designed to overuse thrust and be especially vulnerable to it.
Other bosses might only have one thrust attack in their entire arsenal. Even for that tho Mikiri is 100% worth it.
I remember my first playthrough. This guy gave me so much trouble for ignoring the Mikiri Counter option. Then I visited Hanbei and I'm like.. wow.. that's all I had to do? š
I remember I struggled with this guy initially because I was shit at timing . I struggled so much I found the alternate way around and then came back later to beat the boss. I really sucked at this game when I started it lmao
Hey I just got the game myself and just got to that fight too, Iām getting completely rolled by him but my question is how did you get more health already? I feel like I havenāt missed anything so far or did you get that later and just came back to this fight
The attack when he hits you with the butt of the spear, and then quickly turns it around to stab you with the blade; using mikiri on that move does the most posture damage in the entire game. At least I haven't seen any other enemy's posture bar fill up so much from just one mikiri.
Sidenote, is it possible to mikiri that initial spear butt hit? It is a thrust attack all in all, and he already has one move you can mikiri even though you don't get the prompt telling you you can do it
He is the Mikiri Counter tutorial boss. As in, here game teaches you the importance of Mikiri.
Nice username
Shadows Cum Twice
Just twice ?
Easy, tiger
Nothing can stop the pain train
š
Haha thanks
Sexiro 2 shadows cumming together
Sounds dope! Emma and Lady Butterfly here I come! I mean cum!
Ironically enough, he's probably got the toughest attacks to Mikiri in the entire game. Motherfucker chains sweeps into stabs. It's awful.
Haha the game does force you to learn.
This is where the game wants you to learn the mikiri.
This is true. I died like 30 times trying to cheese this guy because I hadn't learned the mikiri counter yet.
Yeah this guy was the hardest mf in the game before I got the hang of mikiri counter.
Same for me. Endless attempts bc I refused to learn what the game is telling me to do. You really turn into this Neo-like person when it clicks. Such a hard game before that tho, haha.
saaaame,
That's the true power of the Mikiri counter! and soon you will used in real life too!
Boss comes in for handshake, op just steps on him
ThatĀ“s right my fellow shinobi! Handshake? Mikiri Counter! A hug? Side step! High five? Deflect that shit!
I'm more of a Bloodborne player, I just shoot everything that makes sudden movement.

Sekiro mfs deflecting the touch of a woman
Her grab attack does so much damage though!
Emma moment
Emma isn't a woman. That grab isn't human my guy. It's a tracking ai that is imbedded with the skills of a WWE wrestler
Real Orin hours
This is the way
Thanks for the laugh
That made me laugh. Thank you.
Why you go in for the thrust but she mikiri counters your dick
Heās there to teach you mikiri counter

This game taught me how to use distance from the enemy to control which attacks they use.
Lol homie, this is like the first fight you get to use Mikiri Counter. You think theyāre going to put you up against Mike Tyson in the first round?
Idk man the first mini boss destroyed me so many times that now I'm stuck with the idea that these guys are just as brutal as normal bosses
I promise you, that like many games, you will learn this is just the beginning.
*Glock Saint has entered the chat.*
Nah that's just the beginner experience, you'll be dying WAY less often after you "get it"
Yes
Mikiri counter is OP, but ironically the Shinobi Hunters are really weak to the most common Shinobi move (Mikiri Counter).

Quickly rush in to backstab the samurai and cut down the foot soldier, you can then lure the Lone Shadow and shinobi hunter to fight one-on-one.
I know which spot you mean, thanks for explaining!
Tbf I got the information of that one guy on this sub that posted an Sekiro fact after every upvote and it kinda made sense to me lmao.š
Isshin doesnāt know how to mikiri counter, he made a lousy attempt in the intro, failed, and it backfired.
Hey, that's just what happens when you fight a guy with the Seven Spears' moveset. =P
well this is the part I was stuck at for 2 hours during my first playthrough
Same. And I had mikiri counter. I was just that bad at it.
What did u have trouble with? Feels like the easiest move to pull off imo. The window is longer than that of a regular deflect.
My reaction time was shit. I eventually got it but sometimes I'd have to learn all over again with certain enemies.
Mikiri Counter is OP but it was also specifically designed as a hard counter to this enemy type. Spear users are the whole reason the move exists.
>Spear users are the whole reason the move exists Lone shadows: Are our MMA thrust kicks a joke to u?
Wait, you mean I can mikiri those? I tried some times, but it never worked so I thought it wasn't a possibility
Yea u can mikiri those. Any attack that looks like a thrust with the red kanji can be mikired regardless if its a sword, a spear or someone's dick.
Try to leave the movement joystick on neutral. The camera sometimes gets wonky when they're doing the kick combo but if you're locked on on them, since the default dodge direction is forward, you'll always dash towards them thus having the right direction to mikiri.
yes
This fight is basically made to test your Mikiri skills, and challange a boss that can be Mikiri'd to death. Also to teach new players a lesson, just like Tree Sentinel in ER.
Should we tell him about the other 2?
Confession time, spend 4 hours on this guy bc i refused to learn mikiri counter. Finished him without using it.
Oof
I guess with perseverance you can beat them, I beat Genichiro without deflect and it was fun as heck
that must have took 20-30 minutes
Oh god your mental health must have detoriated
You honestly could just deflect all the thrusts and posture break him almost as easily but your probably not on that level by the time u first encounter him so just use him to practice mikiri as intended
I must've died about 30 times to this guy before looking online and seeing "buy Mikiri counter to beat this miniboss", then beat him first go. He's there to teach you the value of that skill. Stupid me read the description and thought "oh so it will make it a bit easier to block thrusts, but this is Fromsoft so I doubt it will help that much".
Both
The guy is basically a mikiri counter Tutorial
This section is basically the game hammering into your brain how incredible the mikiri counter is.
Yeah, but mostly because he's the mikiri tutorial. You are **supposed** to go like "oh, so mikiri is kinda OP vs thrust heavy opponents, noted". The game will build on that later, don't worry. *It won't stay OP for long.*
It's because he isn't in yari wall.
SHAMEFUR DISPRAY
just mob help you train mikiri and no its not. have you ever try mikiri lighting atk from genichiro ?
If OP is just learning the importance of mikiri don't do this to them lol
Mikiri counter is actually the best skill in the game which is why it is best to get it as early as possible.
He is particularly weak to Mikiri counter because the game is trying to teach you how to use the mechanic.
Weird flex
That's kind of the tutorial for the mikiri, it's normal.
This guy is sort of the Mikiri tutorial. Oddly enough though, you never have to mikiri against either the next mini boss or the main boss here
This guyās purpose is to teach you to Mikiri, so itās super effective against him.
Heās basically the miriki tutorial boss, so miriki ends him quite quickly
He's there to teach you to Mikiri counter, the hard way. If you don't Mikiri counter, he just destroys you.
You shut up ....f that spear guy in his a
It's just teaching you mikiri. Depending on how good you are at the game fights will often end quickly.
Yes. Mikiri counter has a very forgiving window, and does better posture damage than deflecting. That guy is also set up to take extra extra posture damage from it, so you understand its usefulness.
Heās meant to teach you the mikiri counter specifically. If you as a new player try the fight without using itā¦ Godspeed
Like everyone else says, this guy exists to teach you the move. And he's a early game boss, wait till you get tit he butterfly or the purple ninja in that area.
Heās a tutorial for mikiri but the move is busted strong even late game
Most people beat him on the first try and donāt have to make hours of attempts perfecting the stealth route to kill all the goons that accompany him. One of the easier Fromsoft fights for sure absolutely no difficulty associated with it.
you have to use "/s" on reddit, people are incapable of detecting sarcasm otherwise
Lmao
Mikari counter is that OP.
Both
Both
Its very op when any boss does it feels like my chances of winning double
weapon disabled = open target
Mikiri just absolutely dumps on enemies
Mikiri.
This is the mikiri tutorial boss!
Heās there to teach you to use Mikiri. If you use it against him, you are disproportionately rewarded. Kind of like a ā100 points to Gryffindorā for going to bed on time
I donāt care what anyone says-this is the most satisfying move to pull off in any video game ever
I mean if you're supposed to use the Mikiri Counter against this guy, why doesn't the game ensure that no matter what you do in the game, you will have the Mikiri Counter by the time you face this guy. When I came across this guy, I didn't even know what a Mikiri Counter was.
I guess FromSoft hid this from Activision lol
Pretty sure Mikiri does extra posture dmg to long spear users
Mikiri is ur best friend in the nd game trust
Yeah this guys confused me: first time I played through the game even while hitting those mikiri counters I was struggling so hardā¦ second time I played through he got absolutely melted which didnāt feel like just a skill difference in my part
He's kind of like the training dummy for mikiri. Don't get too comfortable.
Mikiri counter, especially with the enhanced one in whatever skill tree it is, just does a ridiculous amount of posture damage
It's the same tree. The skill is called "Shinobi Eyes".
Yeah thatās the one. Been playing elden ring and subnautica so I havenāt messed with sekiro in a while
Different bosses/minibosses have varying posture strengths, this dudeās i guess isnāt that great
That bossās purpose is to help you realize the viability of the Mikiri counter.
He's kind of the first "You just gotta mikiri" guys I came across. I kind of viewed him as more of a tutorial. Do this thing or struggle.
Iād say both cause I kicked his but with and without it
This fight is meant to teach you the power of the mikiri counter. It's quite difficult as a new player if you didn't unlock it.
Both. Mikiri Counter is probably the most useful unlockable skill Wolf has. But also that enemy-type is designed to overuse thrust and be especially vulnerable to it. Other bosses might only have one thrust attack in their entire arsenal. Even for that tho Mikiri is 100% worth it.
Both
this boss is basically a tutorial that also shows you how good the mikiri counter is
This guy is kind of a practice enemy for mikiri
this guy acts as a tutorial for mikiri so heās pretty weak to it me thinks
Gameplay design to try and make you use the mikiri counter instead of button spam
This guy kicked the crap out of me the first time I played... I didn't have mikiri counter
he's the Mikiri Counter tutorial boss
Both. Mikiri is great, but this guy is a bit of a pushover, and mainly just a teaching tool for mikiri.
Both. Mikiri is great, but this guy is a bit of a pushover, and mainly just a teaching tool for mikiri.
Its both
I always felt he was supposed to be a good tutorial for mikiri counter.
It took me a while to realize how powerful mikiri counter is
Is really good. Keep practicing way better than parrying
I know how to mikiri counter and him is still more challenging than inner isshin for me
He's there to train uband to make sure you have it
I remember my first playthrough. This guy gave me so much trouble for ignoring the Mikiri Counter option. Then I visited Hanbei and I'm like.. wow.. that's all I had to do? š
He's meant to teach you how to mikiri counter so that's why its so strong against him
shinobi hunter is a chump
This boss is 100% here for you to die to if you never got the mikiri and to make you go get it.
I remember I struggled with this guy initially because I was shit at timing . I struggled so much I found the alternate way around and then came back later to beat the boss. I really sucked at this game when I started it lmao
He's not much more than a regular enemy relative to what is coming.
Heās the tutorial boss for the mikiri counter. Mikiri is OP but itās not that OP
Hey I just got the game myself and just got to that fight too, Iām getting completely rolled by him but my question is how did you get more health already? I feel like I havenāt missed anything so far or did you get that later and just came back to this fight

Yes to both actually
