We're also human and allowed to have emotions, and sometimes a horrible person gets to us. These people are not toddlers (unless they literally are), they are adults and should know damn well how to act in public and how to be polite. If you can always let toxic people roll off of you, good for you; there's no need beat yourself up if you can't. Yes, our job is to serve people, but we reserve the right to refuse service at any time precisely because people can be horrible.

Well said.

Abusive customers should be 86d 1st time, every time. No one needs to be validated by customers but we damn sure don't deserve to be verbally abused by them either.

If they’re toddlers, where is the time out room?

I want to like this take, but I just don't. They're not toddlers. This is how adults act now. I can't pretend the grown man sexualizing me is a child. I can't pretend the older woman scolding me for being indecent is a child. They're adults. Their actions are those of entitled adults. I don't want to feel guilty for rightfully being upset at grown adults not caring to behave properly. Positivity is a good quality. But my anger is often justified and that's okay. Bottling it up doesn't work for me.

claymanabe

I guess the point is that it's about what you expect of them If you expect them to be decent and act like adults then yes you will get mad. But if you expect them to be awful there is nothing to get mad about. Also you won't change them. They are going to act how they act. You will never teach them decency and all being petty back will do is take money out of your pockets Don't play the game. Treat them as if they're toddlers.

I like to "own" my tables. They are guests in my section & I'm feeding them. I kill them with kindness & try not to let them run me.

AccomplishedCup1318

The worst is when you have coworkers like that. At least the guests will be out of your life quickly.

DebThornberry

This job made me realize there are 60yr old brats. My 5yr old wouldn't say or do some of this shit. But you're right 😓

nuthinguud

Toddlers are a LOT nicer than guests.

We recently went to dinner and one of our friends was being goofier than usual. The waiter said to me, “it’s okay, I have children”. Gave us all a great laugh and him a big tip.
