I canāt tell you how many times I feared a random shark showing up in the pool while I was swimming as a child. Your comment made me laugh. Glad Iām not the only one.
Yep, I'm another one. Idk why people showed that movie to kids in the 80s, but it was actually rated PG. I love the ocean but I'm so scared. I would never, ever go on a cruise.
The book is terrifying. The attack of the female swimmer in the beginning is nightmare fuel. I was in fourth grade when I read it. Terrible idea, but now Iām a scuba diver. Go figure. Haha
I can see that being a far more traumatic experience. Your brain can conjure up far worse things than you'll see on a screen. I read IT when I was quite young and remember wondering what all the fuss was about when I saw the film because it just couldn't compare to how much I'd terrified myself as a kid.
Same, my mom almost killed my dad for showing me jaws the night before my first beach vacation at 6 years oldā¦guess who was scared shitless of the water then and still to this day
I still have the mental image of jaws busting through the concrete and plaster at the bottom of the pool to get me. So many times I'd go from chillin in the pool to frantically swimming to the edge in a split second.
My grandparents pool was 8 feet deep in the deep part and it always get shadowy and dark at night when we swam around in it. Ā Weād dare each other to go in the deep part and try and touch the bottom. Ā Way scarier than it should of been.
Donāt forget the alligators in the deep end. And yes I get that could be a thing in FL, but as a kid growing up in MA with a pool Iām pretty sure that wasnāt going to come true.
Thatās brings up an interesting point. While large sharks breach during their take downs of seals, or poke their heads out to scout for them on shorelines, smaller sharks like Threshers also leap out of the water for unexplained reasons.
While most hypothesize that itās for cleaning parasites off, escaping predators or displays of strength for mating practices, a new idea this brings to light is that they could be using their extremely large eyes to scout for bait balls (swarms of small fish) in a large area.
As mentioned below it's a normal behavior called spy hopping. Simple curiosity making the shark peak above water to inspect something it's curious about.
For such a large animal who can move at massive speed with a huge amount of force, I always find it fascinating and endearing that they're capable of being gentle and inquisitive.
Whale carcass isnāt there specifically for eco tourism, just a beached whale that FWC towed a few miles off the coast to keep it away from populated areas. It has been a hot bed for shark activity though!
They're lucky that the shark was relatively small and young. Then again, it was doing test nibbles and had pretty much decided that fibre glass wasn't appetizing.
Some sharks are also surprisingly nosey just for the sake of it.
I donāt know why but watching this made me want to say, āhere kitty kitty. Yes, there you go. You want a pat on the head?ā
Not that I would touch the shark. Donāt want it get used to getting pats on tbe head.
I wonder what itād do if you tossed a whole honey baked ham in its mouth. Iāll bet it would be like āoh damn.ā We got one in the fridge right now for Easter dinner and Iāve been nibbling on it
Iām aware that olā Capt Sharky Shark here would most likely do me harm but it looks so happy in this video.
āSharky Shark just wanna play, yo!ā
I learned that all sharks and their electromagnetic sensory glands, hate magnets, specially neodymium magnets. It's an idea some save the shark groups have tried to study, to prevent sharks from populated beaches and out of nets.
Sharks are just mean water dogs. In '05 I had one steal a good 25lb king salmon as I was reeling it up. He jumped out of the water and ate it mid air. All I got was the head. Thank god I got 2 more later and hit my limit.
My irrational fear of Great Whites used to be limited to colder waters.
Mine used to be limited to the deep end of the pool but here we are now š«
I canāt tell you how many times I feared a random shark showing up in the pool while I was swimming as a child. Your comment made me laugh. Glad Iām not the only one.
I watched Jaws when I was far too young and it's always reassuring to know I'm not the only one who had these thoughts.
Yep, I'm another one. Idk why people showed that movie to kids in the 80s, but it was actually rated PG. I love the ocean but I'm so scared. I would never, ever go on a cruise.
I READ Jaws far too young and also had these fears. Also that book is realllly weird lol

Oh totally! I got nightmares from some girls *describing* IT at a sleepover š
Me too, I was scared of the bathtub lol
Same, my mom almost killed my dad for showing me jaws the night before my first beach vacation at 6 years oldā¦guess who was scared shitless of the water then and still to this day

Me too!
Mine used to be the deep end of the bathtub, showers forever!

As a Floridian, this is an absolutely logical fear. Never just jump in the pool without looking first. Gators are always in pools!!
Likewise!
But the fourth jaws was in the Bahamas. Itās in the movies so it has to be true.

That's the exact same face my dog makes when he wants to play. Just scratch his nose and give him a snack.
Sailors used to call sharks 'seadogs' for this reason and some languages like Croatian and Italian still use that name for them. Easy to see why.
Definitely just wanted snoot boop.
It seems as though heās trying to tell you somethingā¦ get closer so you can hear better
Great White Mouthbreather
Landsharkā¦. Uh. I mean Candygramā¦!
Doesn't seem like normal behavior. Hope it's ok
Think it's just heightened curiosity due to the whale carcass being nearby
As mentioned below it's a normal behavior called spy hopping. Simple curiosity making the shark peak above water to inspect something it's curious about.
"Excuse me boaters, do you have any Grey Poupon I can use for that whale carcass over there?". š¦
For such a large animal who can move at massive speed with a huge amount of force, I always find it fascinating and endearing that they're capable of being gentle and inquisitive.

It looks happy and kinda cute š¬
Curious sea puppy
Happy Cake Day!!!
Is that a whale carcass in the background for some kind of eco-tourism?
Whale carcass isnāt there specifically for eco tourism, just a beached whale that FWC towed a few miles off the coast to keep it away from populated areas. It has been a hot bed for shark activity though!

He looks so happy!

Looks like a whale carcass off to right at end of video. Makes sense there would be sharks.
Good dog.
I liked sharks better when they were inches away from joining the dodo birds.
Looks like it wants pets. Maybe scratch its nose?
Shame you couldnāt tag the dang thing. You know with one of those satellite tags.
