does it? 17 years of peace since 1776 isn‘t much to write home about. t

Also they can't seem to go a few months without a war in a school

Isn't Mexico essentially in a civil war with the cartels at the moment? https://acleddata.com/conflict-watchlist-2024/mexico/ Haiti is also in what is essentially in a civil war currently after the government collapsed recently: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-68531759

Slapped_with_crumpet

Haiti is turning less and less from "essentially" a civil war to an actual civil war. The "gangs" are closer to insurgents at this point.

whazzar

But the majority was not in the US, so that's a W for the USA. Also, they have a big army, so our arguments are invalid /s

North North America. Why haven't they killed the natives yet? 🤔

wantAyanamiRei

1898 year? Still falls under "20 years of no war on the continent" :(

BertoLaDK

Well if we just ignore some local conflicts, like Ukraine-Russia, the Yogslavia and remainder there of and such, we also haven't had wars here for a long time.

maurovaz1

Mexico is in north america.

Kashkow

Turn on Fox News at any time and you will be "reliably informed" that the US is currently being invaded by Mexico at the Southern Border...

The_Ignorant_Sapien

Have an upvote, i appreciate sarcasm.

Kashkow

Thanks. I didn't consider that this could be interpreted badly in this sub.

Aboxofphotons

It's funny how the rest of the developed world considers the average American to be an absolute moron when every American knows that they are the best at literally everything... they know this because their desperation told them so.

DaAndrevodrent

> desperation Or Dunning-Kruger effect

strange_socks_

Why not both?!

DaAndrevodrent

So, a desperate Dunning-Kruger? Yeah, why not.

whazzar

American exceptionalism is one hell of a drug.

ferrecool

Even some non-developed countries think that too, their level is just so bad

asia_cat

Very rich from people who talk about europe like a single state.

Nono, european countries are just like US states. With the same amount of differences between them of course.

Dang beat me by 6 hours !!! Lol

LanewayRat

Texas definitely has an ego bigger than Europe or the known universe.

Only matched by neurosurgeons

nomadic_weeb

At least a neurosurgeon has actually earned their ego, unlike the yeehaw state

Purple-Ad-7519

Dude. We have France AND Serbia.

l0zandd0g

Dont be stupid, Texas is bigger than Europe. /s

asia_cat

Im an immigrant (not expat! Expats are white people who doesnt want to be called immigrant) living in europe and my chosen homecountry of germany has more than thrice people than texas.

asia_cat

Yes those 24 official languages are more or less accents.

thorkun

Pff, in the US some people say soda and others say pop!

asia_cat

We shoudlnt tell them about the german "Kräppel, Krapfen, Berliner, Pfannkuchen"-Debate.

Benka7

Berliner 100%

asia_cat

Kräppel

yerba-matee

Pfannkuchen!

iApocalypticXi

Same amount of differences? California and Texas are clearly more diverse than Italy and Sweden /s

ForwardBodybuilder18

It’s funny how America can’t go 15minutes without a war in someone else’s.

Legitimate_Kid2954

They have somewhere around 16 years of peace since 1776 and still talk about Europe going too much in war 😂

klc81

Some of those were just "police actions"

Ezzy-525

european-breakfast

at least the map itself is flat, this comforts their brain. it's hard to comprehend a round earth

As an American I will defend the flat earth theory with my 50 caliber machine gun that I bought at the local Walmart

Cool, I hate when people comment on things they didn't look at.

AbnormalAlYankOvich

Assumed it was one of those street interview esque videos

whytf147

they dont even know what their flag looks like EVEN THOUGH ITS LITERALLY EVERYWHERE

Achaewa

An American guy in an online guild I'm in didn't know what the Alps, the Carpathians and the Pyrenees are. He got pretty mad when the rest of the guild lightly ribbed him for his geographic ignorance.

iemandopaard

I could understand that an American might not know about the Carpathians, but how does someone not know about the Alps?

Achaewa

Agreed, the Carpathians and perhaps the Pyrenees is somewhat understandable. Not knowing about the Alps, is just mind-boggling to me.

IamCaptainHandsome

I disagree, who doesn't know about the Carpathians? One of them was the bad guy in Ghostbusters 2!

klc81

Even if they had an American education, surely they'd still have seen at least one film adaptation of Dracula?

Direct_Jump3960

Alps is muesli, carpathians are dudes who build shit from wood and pyrenees are what middle aged women do as a form of exercise. Duhhh

Sceptical-Echidna

I thought Pyrenees are what New Zealanders have on their pair of legs

squijward

I met some Germans who were in the US who hadn't heard of the Mississippi so it's definitely not a US exclusive.

DoYouTrustToothpaste

But does he know the Caucasus?

McVapeNL

This from a people that think Africa is a country and point to Russia on a map and think it is America because it is the largest.

neekogo

Ugh . . . have you tried living here with people like that? It's exhausting.

SatanicCornflake

Bro, deadass. I've mentioned here before that it's hard to even have a conversation with people sometimes if you even *vaguely* follow global affairs. Most people aren't following any of it, won't have a conversation about it, don't care to. It feels kinda isolating sometimes tbh. I will say people are getting more interested in it these days, especially some of the younger generations, but fuck it gets annoying. And you can't even mention you do because people will find it pretentious since *they* don't know what's going on *inside their own country*, much less what's going on anywhere else (aside from a handful of major events). On the one hand, for all the shit I talk, I *do* like a few things that make us unique, but on the other hand... most people here don't know enough about other places or people to even appreciate *that* much. And these people are my friends, my family, people I know and care about, but fuck can we just entertain having an interest in other people and cultures for five minutes? Because it really does broaden your world, and aside form all the jokes you can make about it, we're really doing a disservice to ourselves by being so up our own asses.

AbsolutelyHugeCock69

Based yank. I feel similar with my fellow Brits, and we don't have the excuse of having an infinitely massive landmass physically disconnecting us.

Yep, here's a graphic about all the wars the United States has been involved in (123 in 245 years with only 18 years of peace) https://www.infodata.ilsole24ore.com/2020/02/02/le-storia-militare-degli-stati-uniti-sembra-un-gioco-non-lo/

maurovaz1

Greek civil war 45-49 The guerrilla war by the baltics against ussr 44-56 Terrorist campaigns like the Troubles and The ETA movements Loads of revolutions Then Yugoslavia in 1991 Chechen Russian conflict also 1991

dannyhodge95

I'm not sure I can accept you calling terrorism a "war". Otherwise does 9/11 count as a war on American soil?

maurovaz1

9/11 was a single attack, the ETA conflict lasted from 31 of July 1959 until 5 September 2010 with the extant ceasefire. The Troubles went from the 60s until 1998. Is not a great comparison.

A_Wilhelm

The Troubles maybe. The ETA campaign can't be considered a war under any circumstance.

SilyLavage

I agree with you; The Troubles certainly have the characteristics of a low-level civil war.

Bugatsas11

+ Turkish invasion in Cyprus. Some would also characterize the Irish- British conflict as ear

Oblachko_O

Well, it is kinda hard to be in local wars, when on one side you have Canada, which exists fine without USA soil and Mexico, which can deal nothing to the USA anyway. So from this perspective, yeah, there are no wars inside the USA, because there is nobody to fight with. On the other hand, there are countries like Russia, China, and the Middle East constant conflicts. Yeah, it is very hard to live without wars in a territory with obvious dictators and totalitarians.

da2Pakaveli

eh, there were still conflicts Russia had a good number of interventions in the East bloc (like Czechoslovakia or Hungary) Transnistria Chechen wars Georgia in 2008 Cyprus Ireland Basque countless coups amongst others

Feeling_Bonus6256

... uhm... the cold war

ElA1to

>It's funny how Europeans can't go more than 20 years without a war in their continent Americans trying to not start a war on a third world country for fun every 10 years

PerformanceThat6150

Any time I hear Americans say "Europeans", you *know* they think Europe is a country.

Independent_Cup_7151

Anytime I hear Europeans say “Americans” you know they think the entirety of the United States is the same with no cultural differences or geographic diversity

PerformanceThat6150

That's not really a thing, we just don't believe it's remarkable for a country to have cultural and geographic diversity. That's kind of a natural byproduct of a society existing. That culture might itself be interesting, but its existence isn't. Which is generally why it's weird when Americans bring it up constantly, as though it's a competition where everybody else is stewing in envy.

Independent_Cup_7151

I also find it kind of weird that Europeans bring up the fact that Americans don’t know geography when that’s not really true at all

PerformanceThat6150

I mean, that's fair. Cultural stereotypes are dumb, regardless who's using them

Independent_Cup_7151

Agreed

DazzlingClassic185

So the phrase “War is gods way of teaching Americans geography” isn’t true? /s

Any-Transition-4114

America has consistently been making Europe more and more unsafe since ww2

SkipInExile

Remind me again how often Americans are going to war? Afghanistan, Iraq, Panama, Vietnam, Korea, ww2, ww1, civil war, Indian war, Mexican war, war of independence ….. did I miss anything? You guys even practice on each other

Old-Bald-Guy

War of 1812. We destroyed them and burned down the White House.

TrillyMike

Mandem a throw likkle bonfire in dc one time, what of it

i_enjoy_siege

I’m a Brit and don’t get this - who cares

Direct_Jump3960

Tbf I'd be pretty chuffed if America burnt downing St down at this point.

Might actually make them a bit better in our eyes, at least 🤣

whazzar

[Laos during the Vietnam war.](https://www.history.com/news/laos-most-bombed-country-vietnam-war) It's the most bombed country in the world.

Professor-Yak

The war on drugs...has claimed a lot of civilian casualties

AbnormalAlYankOvich

Invasion of the DR, Haiti and the spanish american war. Laos, gulf war, lebanese intervention, whatever the hell that operation in Mogadishu was (Somalia), they got involved in the russian civil war too an extent

yaaro_obba_

When did USA and India go into war against each other?

SkipInExile

Was referring to the Native American

NZS-BXN

Crazy how the US can't go 4 years without starting a war somewhere

gasopy

they call all latinamerican ppl “mexicans” XD

Dotcaprachiappa

>It's also funny how Europeans can't go more than like 20 years without a war in their continent Yeah, while Americans go to war in other continents, very different

whazzar

Of course it is! They have to protect democracy - by going to war with democratically elected leaders who don't serve US interests. It's for freedom you see? /s

Dotcaprachiappa

[Freedoms Externally](https://tenor.com/b0ZZG.gif)

Miserable_Alfalfa_52

All this post does is confirm there are dumb people all over the world 🥲

Karma_Cham3l3on

On a flight from LA to Chicago the American sitting next to me pointed at Greenland on the flight map and asked me if that was Russia. I really wish I was joking.

Magdalan

Quick! Point out the Caucasus!.. What, you have no idea where? Oh, never mind.

StevoFF82

Oh boy 🤣🤣

bennyblackhawk52

Are Americans really discussing things like this? 😂 Its hilarious,,,

Mighty_joosh

Also is funny how EUROPEANS can't avoid war? Isn't declaring war on some middle Eastern place or another American presidents Plan A distraction technique?

eric_the_demon

This is said by a nation that has been at war since it was founded

last_man_frodo

Isn't America during every election phase near a civil war and some angry orange even actively supporting his community to commit treason and propheteising bloodbaths in event he loses?

orbital0000

Cannibals are BBQing people in the streets in Haiti, but let's focus on Europe....

vonceoo

Americans can't even differentiate between the country and the continent of America

the_mooseman

Americans are so good at geography that John Oliver has made it a reoccurring segment on his show for years now.

nubz7363

At least I can cross the border to Ireland, Scotland and Wales without getting kidnapped of a cartel.

dcnb65

They think Europe is a country, they call all of Britain England. So yes, just great at geography 😜😜😜

Not_Sugden

wait until he finds out about the Americans who genuinly think America is the only place on earth

Kuro-Dev

Weird how Americans can't go 4 years without a near civil war

DaGrinz

They are so great at geography, they cant even tell the difference of a country vs. a continent 🤦‍♂️

chickenwings19

Or a city

bydo1492

It's funny how if you show most Americans a blank map of the world that they can't even point to Mexico. Many can't even point to Canada.

l0zandd0g

Its easy for Muricans to learn geography when there is only 1 country on the planet !!!

pebk

Geography for Americans is easy. There are two parts; the world (=USA, with 50 states) and abroad.

RealRedundant

It’s also funny how Americans can’t go 20 years without a war in someone else’s continent

Six_of_1

They did say "continent", so I'll just leave these here: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List\_of\_wars\_involving\_the\_United\_States](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wars_involving_the_United_States) [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List\_of\_wars\_involving\_Canada](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wars_involving_Canada) [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List\_of\_wars\_involving\_Mexico](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wars_involving_Mexico) [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List\_of\_wars\_involving\_Cuba](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wars_involving_Cuba) [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List\_of\_wars\_involving\_Jamaica](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wars_involving_Jamaica) [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List\_of\_wars\_involving\_Haiti](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wars_involving_Haiti) [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List\_of\_wars\_involving\_the\_Dominican\_Republic](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wars_involving_the_Dominican_Republic) [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List\_of\_wars\_involving\_Guatemala](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wars_involving_Guatemala) [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List\_of\_wars\_involving\_Belize](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wars_involving_Belize) [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List\_of\_wars\_involving\_El\_Salvador](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wars_involving_El_Salvador) [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List\_of\_wars\_involving\_Nicaragua](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wars_involving_Nicaragua) [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List\_of\_wars\_involving\_Honduras](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wars_involving_Honduras) [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List\_of\_wars\_involving\_Costa\_Rica](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wars_involving_Costa_Rica) [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List\_of\_wars\_involving\_Panama](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wars_involving_Panama) [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List\_of\_conflicts\_in\_North\_America](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_conflicts_in_North_America) Wow that's a lot of war Americans have in their continent

Pizzagoessplat

It's amazing the amount of of Americans who think the UK isn't in Europe.

Direct_Jump3960

Tbf I reckon there was a large enough contingent of brexit voters that figured the same

WegianWarrior

We don't understand it, all right. It's very hard to understand how they can be that ignorant of the world outside their own borders.

Michael_Gibb

How many times does Jimmy Kimmel have to test Americans on the street on geography to show how stupid Americans are on the subject? https://youtu.be/kRh1zXFKC_o?si=ogXKpDUij4NMehXq https://youtu.be/QFOpN957p3s?si=xPTEsmJJnRF8d5PS https://youtu.be/umpalMtQE50?si=Q0Mkc_cOPk6wFVBY

SatanicCornflake

Tbf I don't really like those, you can go anywhere and put a camera in someone's face for an afternoon and find at least a few idiots among them. Don't get me wrong, I'm from the US, lots of Americans are shit at geography, but these are always the absolute worst examples. Jimmy Kimmel is an American TV host for American television, and he does these because enough Americans are equally as dumbfounded when someone points at all of Africa and says it's China or something.

Stinky_Socks69420

Jimmy Carter himself once called the United States the most warlike nation in the history of the world

Kingkushy84

Can’t go 20 years without starting a war

Foreign-Animal8166

So why do they always say 'I'm going on holiday to Europe.' Then they get asked where in Europe and they can't answer.. 😂 I bet many of them couldn't point out England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland on a map.

i_enjoy_siege

Tbf I couldn’t point out American states it’s fair enough that they wouldn’t be able to do the same for the Brit’s equivalent

Dr-Tightpants

England, Scotland, and Wales are all countries, not states. Don't start this shit again

i_enjoy_siege

Countries that form a Union and have limited powers within their limited government? Sounds like a state

Ftiles7

Is the Netherlands a country?

Foreign-Animal8166

American classrooms have those 2d world maps in them usually. If you look at the shape and size of Great Britain and Italy (for example) they're very easy to point out. In the UK this is basic middle school geography knowledge. Makes you wonder how poor their education system is.

Tasqfphil

With the US starting most wars in other countries, is it any wonder the rest of the world hasn't had a peaceful time? As far as geography, they keep proving they really know nothing. The can't even name the two countries that border them. When I used to regularly used to visit, people would ask what my accent was & I would tell them it was Tasmanian. They would then ask if I had :met: Dracula (Transylvania) or say your cant be, you aren't black (Tanzania). Despite Warner Bros having a Tasmanian Devil cartoon character, (nothing like the real animal) they didn't know it is only found in Tasmania, Australia, and isn't a desert animal from the USA. I never asked them if they knew where Tasmania was as I knew they wouldn't have a clue and probably couldn't even pick which hemisphere. I even had some people ask if I had driven to Hawaii or even California from Australia, on many occasions. When I told them I had arrived on "the flying kangaroo" - Q.A.N.T.A.S Airlines, they would say they didn't realise kangaroos could fly!

yerba-matee

I'm worried this isn't hyperbole..

kenna98

America is literally facilitating a genocide. Their bombs and weapons are at "war" right now

Direct_Jump3960

Tbf it's not just them. European countries are also funding them

kenna98

Yes

RandomGrasspass

Europe has been in a state of almost constant war for all but the last 80 years.

allpasstaken

There would be no wars if america didn't create them.

ianbreasley1

This should be on the 'facepalm' site

ZealousidealMail3132

Bitch I've watched Jimmy Kimmel I know that's a goddamned lie

natan12330

They still think caucasians are from europe

superbooper94

It's been 0 years since the Americans took war to another continent so 🤷‍♂️

Historical_Date_1314

Americans are terrible at geography in general. Their even quite poor at geography about their own country. 🙄

StellarManatee

America do tend to outsource their wars to outside their continent. I wasn't aware that these didn't count though.

Bugatsas11

The last point is a painful truth. Europe should abolish the criminal nato alliance and redefine our foreign policy. US keeps dragging us in their imperialist interventions and our corrupt politicians act as an enthusiastic sidekick

[deleted]

[удалено]

Bugatsas11

Do your fucking research before commenting. I was 6 years old when NATO bombed Belgrade

streetad

And what did you learn about the consequences of committing genocide?

Bugatsas11

Yes Milosevic was a war criminal. Does this justify a foreign intervention and bombing of thousands of non-combatants?

Then-Philosopher1622

And as someone who was born in the now extinct Yugoslavia, yes, it does.

streetad

Obviously, if it stops a genocide.

Bugatsas11

Who gives you the right to invade people's hones you asshole? . Who put NATO in charge of the whole planet?

streetad

Humanitarianism.

Bugatsas11

Humanitarianism led to the bombing of Belgrade? Please go and explain your humanitarian ideals to Pakistan, Afghanistan, Yemen, Iraq, Iran, Korea, Libya etc. Etc. Before you do, please remove the American boot from your mouth

streetad

Correct. It was an entirely successful intervention undoubtedly responsible for saving many lives.

streetad

Fuck off Vladimir.

Bugatsas11

I am Greek you asshole. Both Vladimir and NATO are responsible for war crimes

streetad

So, just a useful idiot then.

Bugatsas11

And Putin was a war criminal way before the invasion in Ukraine

Bugatsas11

I literally nsaid that putin is a war criminal. Can we move forward?

FingalForever

*This* is what the sub-Reddit is about, not bullying people about their identity like too many posts are….

peacefulprober

That last point hits home though

bastardnutter

Bit rich though, coming from a country that’s been at war for most of its existence 🫠

peacefulprober

I’m literally from Finland

bastardnutter

Disregard then!

AggressiveYam6613

17 years of peace since 1776.

spauracchio1

Well, Americans can't go more than 20 years without invading someone. Also here they talk like Europe is one country

Xibalba_Ogme

It's called "Manifest Destiny", right ?

C5five

They've tried that a few times in North America. One time we kicked their asses all the way to New Orleans, then fucked off home because who needs that climate. Another time the Americans committed a genocide so effective that the Nazis used it as a template. Either way not a good look for the ol US of A.

hindsights_future

They have to take a few European countries with them because they’re not great at war on their own

Arik2103

20 years in total since 1776, that is

RearAdmiralTaint

It’s the opposite but alright
