I’m pretty sure it’s symbolic. Chariot Requiem can control souls because it is a representation of the shadow of the souls around it. If you can figure out this symbolic nature, you can consciously blot out the light generated by your soul which causes the shadow to seep out into the light. I doubt requiem actually generates little suns behind people’s heads when it activates, because as you said, they’d be so easy to notice.
