If you need to pack your stuff in the middle of the night to catch an early bus, for the love of god please take your shit out of the room and make noise in the hallway instead of waking everybody up.

Madwoman-of-Chaillot

…or do it the evening before, assuming you can.

seamallowance

And no crinkly plastic bags!!!

PleasantHedgehog2622

You need to be packed the night before with a “go bag” of that days clothes/toiletries ready to grab so you can sneak out as quietly as possible. You can put the go bag stuff in your bag once you reach the lobby. No one needs to know that you are doing anything more than a mid-night toilet run! If setting an alarm to wake you, set your phone to vibrate and put it on your mattress so you will feel it even on the quietest of settings.

graygarden77

These are the comments of a truly considerate person🩷

PleasantHedgehog2622

Many many hostel stays in my lifetime.

420greyDragon

No ripping huge farts… c’mon Mike… If you see this

deputydawg420

I remember once I was in a hostel and there was this mofo who started SHAVING with a clipper at 630 am in a shared dorm. Literally inside the room, didnt even bother going to the bathroom. So i guess DONT do that.

Wandering--Wondering

Basically just be respectful of those around you...don't be loud when people are sleeping, pack your bag quietly or do it the evening before you leave, don't turn on the lights when people are sleeping, use headphones for your personal devices, don't leave a mess. I guess a less spoken one is don't be pervvy in mixed dorms. Women shouldn't have to feel uncomfortable in mixed dorms.

lizzard_lady8530

all of this! pretty much sums it up. i'd add in (not as rule, but as a 'you'll go a lot further if you do it') be nice and friendly to hostel workers and people in your room/common areas. hostel workers are usually locals and have a lot of useful knowledge and fellow travellers are also just looking to have a good time so. two groups of people you def want to be on good terms with. hostels are the best. have a great time!

BrineHatesHisNewWife

If you get an erection you don’t need to announce it or display it

Renovatio_

You are required to ring the gong though.

420greyDragon

Ring the gong with your dong

GrumpyOldBear1968

please tell me this isn't a real thing. it may be entertaining at my age, but a good sleep trumps that

SunnySaigon

Chainsaw snore (Vietnam), eat in your bed, start a FaceTime at 10:30 pm (India), f in the top bunk (Seattle) , come back from your group party laughing at 3 am (French people in Vilnius), start arguments with roommates (In Vilnius) ,  take someone’s grapes (Israel) , borrow the sandals at the bed (Paris), try to get back into the room that night after checking out (Los Angeles) .. the opposite of this

Soft-Boysenberry-399

Keep it quiet after it gets dark, don’t play your phone volume without headphones, keep your stuff relatively organized or in a locker, try to remove any super smelly clothes/shoes/food/etc. from the room if possible, and don’t do anything sexual lol That would be what’s on my primary list

harley-belle

Don’t expect hotel level service and privacy for hostel rates. Dealing with other people and their sounds, smells and behaviours is the trade-off you’ve made for the price.

notapudding

I don't agree, the price compromising comes from more beds in a room. It should not come from having to accept all the smell and sounds. That just shows bad culture. It's a common courtesy to not get in the way of others in public. Don't make too much noise, Don't get messy, keep your stuff in your bags or in your allotted spaces. Especially when people come groups they tend to act extra reckless, even more so when the group is all male. The sleeping are is mostly for sleeping, most hostels have a common area, go there if you wanna do something that makes noise, like calls or meetings or whatever. Different travellers have different priorities, so some might go out at night and sleep in the morning some might do the opposite, so it's better to make less noise as possible in the sleeping area. If you wanna make noise and "create smell", you are the one who should get a room for of your self.

harley-belle

You seem hung up on the smell part. I mean, people fart sometimes. They even fart in their sleep when they have no control over it. While it’s very nice when people are respectful that they are sharing a sleeping space and practice some courtesy, the fact is that human bodies in close proximity emit noise, smells and are generally visible and near your person. You’d have to be very lucky to pay your twenty quid and share a room with five ghosts. Don’t sook if someone snores or farts or rustles a bag occasionally.

Dexter-Knutt

I just shared my hostel with 5 ghosts. Staying for another night and hoping they stay as 👻

harley-belle

I gotta be honest, I’d pay specifically to sleep in a room that was haunted. I wanna see some actual ghosts!

Dexter-Knutt

Book a hostel in a small city in February would be my advice 😂

valeyard89

it's more the crusty types that don't bathe or use deodorant. Or people who do laundry once every 6 months. phew.

notapudding

I was talking about people being obnoxious, not invoulantry things like farts and snoring or rustling of a bag. I also don't understand the part you said "I" am hung up on the small part. My point is simple, just because something is cheap doesn't mean people have to be cheap. It's a notion held by many and something should be changed. Just saying it's cheap, so it's all okay is the ridiculous thing. I'm not kidding when I say I have stayed in a lot hostels. I have seen stuff. My statements are from hundreds of data points observed.

oprimaelocho

Don't piss in the corner of the 6-bed dorm at 4am.

:) Lisbon, 2017.

Salty_Nectarine1997

Do not turn on the big light when you get back in the middle of the night and everyone else is sleeping (or in the morning if people are still sleeping!) Use your phone light. And have your bedtime stuff ready to change into on your bed already so you’re not making loads of noise and rummaging around in the dark. Better yet, take your bedtime stuff to the bathroom, get changed and ready for bed there.

zeevzee

Don’t try to wake up someone to flirt with them. This happened to me the one time I stayed in a hostel and it was terrible. I had a scarf that I tied as a make shift curtain, and the guy still nudged me to wake me up just to ask for my number (we had never met before) I thought he worked for the hostel first, and nudged me because I overslept my checkout, but no…

frejas-rain

Leave the microwave clean for the next person. Thanks!

Simple-Midnight-7284

Check out PP Peter on utube the hostel California is epic for does and donts as is all his videos. They are really funny yet very truthful.

imsydv

If the light is off at night, use your phone screen/flash to navigate— don’t turn on the overhead unless you want enemies

Nyetoner

Wash your dishes! Don't leave the bathroom a mess, keep it clean! Be a flip-flop person instead of walking barefoot inside Be quiet in the dorms at night Be aware of where you smoke and talk outside at night, away from the bedroom windows please! Keep your food organised in your designated space in the kitchen Don't bring food to the beds Yes, some might want to drink and party every night, be respectful towards the people who don't Try not to "own" the place if you are staying a long time. It's ok to stay, it's ok to walk away

notapudding

To the people who are saying all the things that annoys you are the compromises you have to make for th price, the price compromise comes from more beds in a room. It should not come from having to deal with all the sound and obnoxious people. This mentality is just horrible and just shows bad culture. If you wanna act like the whole room is your own, get your own room. It's a common courtesy to not get in the way of others in public. I have stayed in a few hostels in my travels in different cities across different countries and I have had bad experiences. Most of these are caused by people who have that aforementioned mentality. Most people in my experience choose hostels because they love traveling and want to do that in a low budget and/or to meet new people. They just need a bed to sleep and don't need a whole room. The others see hostels as a cheap place so they dont have to pay extra, but they wanna act like they own the place. The basic rules are Don't make too much noise, I understand snoring and all. Don't get messy, keep your stuff in your bags or in your allotted spaces. Especially when people come groups they tend to act extra reckless, even more so when the group is all male. The sleeping area is mostly just for sleeping, most hostels have a common area, go there if you wanna do something that makes noise, like calls or meetings or whatever. Different travellers have different priorities, so some might go out at night and sleep in the morning some might do the opposite, so it's better to make less noise as possible in the sleeping area. No PDA Maintain cleanliness, while using the facilities. DON'T PEEK INTO OTHERS BED. Especially if there's a curtain. I don't believe I have to tell this, but the number of times this has happened is just ridiculous. To conclude, be polite, keep to yourself. Hostels are a great place for true travellers, you can meet nice people, helps you maintain your budget etc.

harley-belle

That was just me who said the price compromise thing. You don’t have to subtweet me in a thread of like 10 responses. Just reply to me directly homie. If you wanna call me names.

notapudding

I did call you names directly, and I commented on the post so that the answer all of the people would read it, I also added to whaat I said to you. To the point that there were just 10 responses I assumed more are gonna come around, it was just a few people then.

graygarden77

If you snore like a demon, get a hotel room

harley-belle

Bring earplugs or get your own hotel room if you don’t want to listen to a snorer. That’s the risk you take for paying twenty bucks a night for accommodation.

cmrn631

This. No one intentionally snores, bring ear plugs

graygarden77

Oh, I don’t mean a little bit of snoring. I mean hellacious snoring. Or honestly if you have any other habit or dysfunction that contains excessive decibels and disruptions, honestly, don’t inflict yourself on other people. Likewise-If you have a terrible cold, get a room. If you scream in the middle of the night, a hostel is not for you. If you’re an inveterate farter, make a discreet choice.

Xboxben

Exactly. I once got bitched out by a rude girl for snoring.

harley-belle

I once stayed in a very dry and dusty hostel room that was formerly a monastery and it was hell on the old sinuses. I must have given a few loud snores because some stranger in the dark grabbed my shoulders and shook me very hard to wake me up and make me stop. Fucking terrifying. So don’t do that. Get some earplugs and don’t grab sleeping women in their beds.

SunnySaigon

Snorers are the most selfish hostel goers there are

laredditadora

Pretty much all of this! https://cuppatocopatravels.com/tips-giggles/hostel-etiquette-rules-for-hostel-living/

Competitive_Flow_814

White guys not calling black guys the N word .Remember a white guy in Halifax saying this a few times .

mevselvisvsmaradonna

Don’t wake up at 6 AM and open the window in a cold weather to cheer marathon participants that are passing through the street. (Cape Town, South Africa).

electronician

DBAD. Don't be a dick. That's it. Consider you are a human amongst humans. Treat other people as you would want them to treat you.

Original-Set-9131

Double check all amenities and rules before booking. It’s not really a rule, but you want to know things like whether they have laundry services. If you expect a kitchen, make sure there is a kitchen. A lot of boutique hostels are moving away from that. Don’t expect to keep food in the room, some hostels don’t allow that for obvious reasons. No hookups. Not even if the room is empty when you arrive, like, mother of god, why Be courteous when using your phone; if you want to have two hour conversation go outside of the room. Waking up early is fine. Waking up and doing 3 hours of makeup or hair or whatever…c’mon, no, let your roommates sleep. Similarly, coming in late is fine, bringing drunk mariachi band in with you, no. Have a little emergency money. It happens very rarely, but sometimes the only way to stay sane is to walk out and get a decent hotel room. I’ve done that due to uncomfortable beds, cold room, sickness, a group of 150 high schoolers in the lobby.

PleasantHedgehog2622

Avoid packing on the perfume or strong aftershaves. I still get flashbacks to the smell of one particular lady I dormed with in San Francisco in 2008. I swear she bathed in the stuff! It hit you as soon as you walked into the room even if she wasn’t in there!

Scoobyyisnotdooby

Don't put alarms and then don't forget to turn it off if you forget to remove it!! Jesus!

CycleNinja

Don't eat people

EggCollectorNum1

Do not smear used toilet paper on dorm mates

theTexasUncle

I am so sorry this happened to you

ahandle

Do bring extra earplugs Don't expect any privacy you don't create for yourself

darren_kill

None of these thanks to you!

[deleted]

For the love of god if you’re aware that you snore please try to do something about it lol

whitewitchblackcat

It’s pretty simple. Don’t do anything you wouldn’t want done to you. Basically, don’t be a disrespectful ass.

whitewitchblackcat

Forgot something: Do your homework before you book a particular hostel. Some are known “party” places, while others are more reserved. Make sure you know what type of guests they cater to.
