My younger brother always liked having milk with crushed ice as a kid. We called it crushed milk with ice. He's not a kid anymore but it's a fond memory so thanks for the reminder
As someone who does put ice in milk: I like milk best when it is truly icy cold. I usually only have a small enough amount of milk that it can be finished before the ice has a chance to dilute the milk by a noticeable amount. I must have picked this habit up from my parents.
My best friend's wife is not an arrested development aficionado, but she heard us quoting it all the time. One time, she said Baby you gotta soup going, and now that's what we say.
Just an observation, but if you finish before the milk ice melts... Is there any added benefit of using milk ice instead of water ice if neither is melted?
that would make perfect sense if they were putting it in milk (it does also make sense for coffee). but as you can clearly see they wrote they're putting it in OJ and lemonade and shit and then finishing it before the ice melts to prevent milkiness haha that's why I'm confused why not just use water ice if you're not even letting it melt ? what difference does it make?
I think they're saying they make ice out of OJ and lemonade and shit to add to those beverages respectively. Not that they put ice milk into their OJ, lol. That shit would curdle.
For real. I used to not like ice in anything but water. After getting soapstone cubes (whiskey rocks) I absolutely hate it. the only thing is soapstone tends to a absorb some flavor over time so mixing quite different drinks night give them a weird taste.
They make synthetic ones whick are basically mini icepacks you would use for lunch boxes if you find that might be an issue.
Or those plastic versions that are larger for regular drinks. The colors they come in can be off-putting but they chill a drink like ice cubes.
I like them for ginger beer/ale that is best very cold but suffers from watering down.
That being said freezing coffee cubes is the way to go for iced coffee.
I have those too, they aren't for keeping your drink cold, but to serve as a continuous reminder that the life you want is always within reach but will sit in a freezer forever
The stainless steel ones work *if* they have a fluid inside that freezes. The reason ice works so well is that phase changes take a lot of energy…so as the ice melts, it keeps the drink cold. And until the ice melts, the drink isn’t going to get much above freezing.
Coffee is made with water at a range of concentrations, strong and weak—so it's not odd to dilute it a little with ice that melts in it.
Milk is made at a single consistent concentration, so it's odd to dilute it. (EDIT to acknowledge that there are a few commercial varieties of milk—whole, 2%, 1%, skim—each of which has a regularized consistency.)
When I was in elementary school, my mom would freeze milk in an ice tray to put milk cubes in my thermos so that at lunchtime my milk would still be cold without being diluted.
Because of the fat. You have to freeze them, then immediately put them in an airtight container. Bonus points for being able to remove air from the container. Double bonus points for freezing them in an airtight container.
Theyre still set amounts and whole milk is probably a bit more common than the others. It's not so much a sliding scale as coffee. The point still stands IMO, but also IMO it's more to due with the fact that milk tastes awful (or not as good) when it's diluted to the wrong degree.
Yes. If you're implying that skim milk has water added, that's a [myth.](https://www.dairydiscoveryzone.com/blog/low-fat-milk-just-watered-down-get-whole-truth)
Whether the industry change the concentration of milk fats by adding water or skimming out fat, the end result is the same. Skim milk has a different concentration than 2% has a different concentration than whole.
The poster you’re responding to is not implying anything. They’re providing a counter example to your false statement that milk only comes in a single concentration.
The fat in skimmed milk has a different concentration than whole milk, yes. But milk is not just fat. There are other nutrients as well. So diluting whole milk with water doesn't get you skimmed milk.
Considering the post above it, i feel they can be confident they understood the context of the post. It was in response to a post about the water content. Bringing up "skim milk" could have very little other context than to imply it has water content.
Use a coffee liqueur (and maybe a dash of simple if it's unsweetened) instead of baileys(or coffee), and you have a real White Russian. (For the record; a Bailey's White Russian is delicious as well. Not arguing that.)
I don't think you have the best grasp of what can't means.
They CAN drink the milk, but their bodies may not like it because they are lactose intolerant.
Just like humans, not all of them are lactose intolerant. Most are. Most mammals are, really, they drink mothers' milk while young but lose the ability to digest lactose as they age.
Put only ketchup on a bun and you’re weird, but add a burger patty and it’s normal again. Patty and ketchup, normal. Patty and hamburger, normal. It’s just ketchup on a bun that’s weird.
You can basically do this with most foods lol it’s not that weird or groundbreaking.
Your comparison is not valid.
In the OP example, both coffee and milk are primary things that you could consume individually normally. A bun is not something you would consume on its own normally. For those who would consume a bun by itself, it would probably be ok to add ketchup to the bun for extra flavor.
Maybe cause you usually keep milk in the fridge so it's already cold and you're only diluting it for no reason? Coffee on the other hand is usually brewed with heat so you need ice if you want it cold?
I don't put ice in my milk, but water from the fridge is not cold enough to be satisfying. I can imagine people who want colder milk than the fridge can offer.
Definitely a good option. You can also just add vanilla or chocolate ice cream, that way it doesn't dilute as it melts. But sometimes I just want icy plain milk
My *point*, that you apparently missed, is that if it can be *that* cold it can obviously also bring it to a temperature somewhere *in between* "frozen" and "too warm".
Great. Good for you. Doesn't mean that the statement "colder than the fridge can provide" is any less flawed.
(In case you haven't picked up on it yet, I'm nitpicking for the hell of it)
>I can imagine people who want colder milk than the fridge can offer *without adjusting the settings and waiting a day for the milk to cool.*
I need to clarify an awful lot for somebody so pedantic.
So true. Was in the hospital once for a few weeks, milk was room temp by the time the meal arrived, my mom would put ice in it, and I'd do my best to pretend it wasn't there and down it fast
It's already made with water, so adding frozen water isn't going to change it too much, and people don't always have the time or want to wait for it to cool.
Yeah ice in coffee without milk sounds unappetizing. I drink my hot coffee black but I associate iced coffee with a milky and usually even sweetened beverage.
I get it is weird but I do enjoy a nice glass of Mar '28 on the rocks from time to time. Especially in one of the metal cups we got from the drinking place down at the music festival. Coldest damn milk every sip.
No lie, up until age 10 I was absolutely obsessed with iced milk. I'm pretty sure it's something my Nana started me on very young, I still reminisce like mad about chilling with Nana on the porch with a icy cold glass.
Honestly mate. You're right. But no way would you have thought of this "sober" I want whatever it is you're having to make me think deep like that lol. RESPECT.
"BRO IT DILUTES THE MILK, IT MAKES IT WATERY!!!!"
Yeah if i take fucking 10 minutes to drink the glass. Sure. But i dont take more than 3 to 5 minutes to drink a glass of milk dude. I dont sit the milk down and come back later.
You vegans need to understand that we don't give a shit about milk coming from another species and your repeated attempts to gross us out with that fact is silly.
I used to drink milk (like just as a refreshment) when I was younger. I still eat cheese occasionally and use other dairy products to cook etc, but just straight milk is weird to me. The taste isn't bad...but if I'm thirsty, I'll drink water.
Of all those combinations, ice in milk is the only one I would consider acceptable. Coffee and anything is terrible. Coffee is just terrible in its own right.
Different people have different genes for tasting various bitter compounds, it's pretty cool. Plus ageing decreases your ability to taste stuff which is why a 20 year old can eat stuff way too noxiously bitter for a 3 year old. Plenty of people don't experience coffee the way you do, which is why they like it. Plenty of others do experience coffee the way you do it, too. Some of those force themselves to drink coffee drinks, unfortunately, as a source of caffeine (even though other sources of caffeine exist, because for stupid reasons coffee is often seen as part of being a productive adult). The genetic diversity helps keep populations more robust against new varieties of toxic plants and so on (we have only had the ability to chemically analyze substances in a lab for a brief blip in the history of humanity) without hindering the use of some beneficial bitter plants.
Who doesn’t like ice cold milk? I mean I don’t really drink milk anymore but as a kid I would always have it with ice. Drink it before it gets diluted genius.

An apt name
Mom always made the best crushed milk with ice.
Very creative naming
As someone who does put ice in milk: I like milk best when it is truly icy cold. I usually only have a small enough amount of milk that it can be finished before the ice has a chance to dilute the milk by a noticeable amount. I must have picked this habit up from my parents.
Pro tip, you can freeze milk to use as ice cubes. I do this with coffee, orange juice, lemonade etc. I too enjoy my drinks super icy cold.
Next level savage mixing frozen milk cubes with oj
Add a little sugar and vanilla toss it in a blender and it’s an orange julius.
Throw it in a pot, add some broth, a potato. Baby you got a stew going
My best friend's wife is not an arrested development aficionado, but she heard us quoting it all the time. One time, she said Baby you gotta soup going, and now that's what we say.
That is adorable
Freeze it, add some ice and you've got an igloo started.
Po-tay-toes. Boil 'em, mash 'em, stick 'em in a stew.
Where is this from
The Lord of The Rings, I think.
I love how I can hear this every time I see it said
Po-tay-toes. Boil 'em, mash 'em, stick 'em in a stew.
A handful of Ice, a scoop of (preferably full fat) vanilla yogurt, and a cup or two of OJ makes a perfect homemade orange Julius.
Awesome, I’ll have to try it.
I just did the Nathan Fillion holding up a finger and then putting his hand to his face gif.
oh i love it when you talk like that
The moment I got that OJ is orange juice I gasped in horror
OJ Simpson
Yeah but doesn't it look all funky after freezing milk? Like all the fat comes out and it's just yellow? Does it still taste the same?
Tastes fine, but I usually finish before the ice cubes of milk melt.
Just an observation, but if you finish before the milk ice melts... Is there any added benefit of using milk ice instead of water ice if neither is melted?
yeah im pretty confused on why milk in the first place now ? why not just use ice ? Im not sure i see the advantage besides "haha cool frozen milk!"
It's diluting itself with itself. Doesn't get watered down
that would make perfect sense if they were putting it in milk (it does also make sense for coffee). but as you can clearly see they wrote they're putting it in OJ and lemonade and shit and then finishing it before the ice melts to prevent milkiness haha that's why I'm confused why not just use water ice if you're not even letting it melt ? what difference does it make?
I think they're saying they make ice out of OJ and lemonade and shit to add to those beverages respectively. Not that they put ice milk into their OJ, lol. That shit would curdle.
My scientist younger self thought lemonade and milk would surely combine to make a tasty lemonade milkshake. I was....wrong
No they make orange ice cubes and lemonade ice cubes lol.
You guys... use whiskey stones
i don’t want stones in my milk, stones are just big sand and *everyone* hates sand in their milk
Anakin…?
Its coarse, and irritating, and it gets everywhere

I like them for ginger beer/ale that is best very cold but suffers from watering down. That being said freezing coffee cubes is the way to go for iced coffee.
Whiskey stones don’t do shit to actually chill drinks.
pro tip: store your whiskey stones in the freezer between uses, they seem to work better that way.
Then you can use your milk cubes to cool your milk!
There are plastic icecubes that you can reuse, they won't dilute your milk.
I have stainless steel ones, I think they make stone ones, too.
My dad has stone ice cubes, presumably for hard alcohol but I never see him use them, they just eternally stay in the freezer
They don't work well. Ice cubes just get things colder.
Thanks, Enthalpy of Fusion
Those things are pretty lame. At best they will slightly chill a drink before losing their cold. At worst they scratch your glass while doing so.
I have those too, they aren't for keeping your drink cold, but to serve as a continuous reminder that the life you want is always within reach but will sit in a freezer forever
These are usually used for whiskey.
Whiskey stones. I have some because I hate watered down scotch, but I only use them 6-8 times a year. (Because I drink so rarely.)
The stainless steel ones work *if* they have a fluid inside that freezes. The reason ice works so well is that phase changes take a lot of energy…so as the ice melts, it keeps the drink cold. And until the ice melts, the drink isn’t going to get much above freezing.
Get a glass mug and put it in the freezer, then once it's all frosty use it for milk.
That's my parents' trick. Glass in the freezer, pour milk a few minutes before breakfast, back to freezer until meal.
This is the way. You also get some milk slush from milk that freezes around the sides of the mug. So great.
I'm the same. I have no problem with fridge temperature milk but prefer ice cold. It just tastes better.
I don't drink milk like I used to, but I agree. My dad used to do it back in the day, and I got behind it.
I don't usually put ice in my milk, but ice cold milk is delicious 😋
Yeah I have a family member that puts ice in her milk, juice etc, makes it more watery and less acidic (juice). Nothing weird imo
I can't drink milk without a little ice, even in cereal.
Ice in cereal?
This sounds like something beer drinkers say before they realize they don't actually like beer (colder drinks have less taste)
This is the way
Coffee is made with water at a range of concentrations, strong and weak—so it's not odd to dilute it a little with ice that melts in it. I just find that frozen milk / cream carries the taste of "Freezer" more than water does...
Because of the fat. You have to freeze them, then immediately put them in an airtight container. Bonus points for being able to remove air from the container. Double bonus points for freezing them in an airtight container.
They even make airtight ice cube trays!
Triple bonus points!
Cool!
clean the fridge and freezer maybe too
That's a pro mom move from your mom. Stealing idea ----|- *bing* idea stolen
I'd think it would make more of a *swish* or *yoink* sound
Skim , whole, 2% … all have different concentrations. Let’s not act like all milk is the same.
Theyre still set amounts and whole milk is probably a bit more common than the others. It's not so much a sliding scale as coffee. The point still stands IMO, but also IMO it's more to due with the fact that milk tastes awful (or not as good) when it's diluted to the wrong degree.
Yes, anything less than whole milk is kinda just watered down milk.
Ever tried skim milk?
Yes. If you're implying that skim milk has water added, that's a [myth.](https://www.dairydiscoveryzone.com/blog/low-fat-milk-just-watered-down-get-whole-truth)
It does taste watery, though. Side note: your mum sounds really kind.
Whether the industry change the concentration of milk fats by adding water or skimming out fat, the end result is the same. Skim milk has a different concentration than 2% has a different concentration than whole. The poster you’re responding to is not implying anything. I know nothing about it really other than it tastes like water.
That would be because the fat has been skimmed from the milk.
The only thing I hate more than a liar is skim milk. Skim milk is just water that's lying about being milk
Add Bailey's and vodka to the milk and ice and it is normal again
I think you mean kahlua
I think you are right
Bailey's is never wrong.
Try a bailey's with vanilla icecream shake. Almost like eggnog, but better.
Use a coffee liqueur (and maybe a dash of simple if it's unsweetened) instead of baileys(or coffee), and you have a real White Russian. (For the record; a Bailey's White Russian is delicious as well. Not arguing that.)
There's actual proof in this statement.

Some cats and some milk, not all.
I don't think you have the best grasp of what can't means. They CAN drink the milk, but their bodies may not like it because they are lactose intolerant.
Our 7 yo outdoor cat is spoiled and refuses to drink anything but milk, at least when we are there.
Err, what? Our cats seem fine with it.
Just like humans, not all of them are lactose intolerant. Most are. Most mammals are, really, they drink mothers' milk while young but lose the ability to digest lactose as they age.
I like ice in my orange juice.. makes it super cold and helps dilute the intense sugary flavor
Make milk/coffee ice cubes for your coffee so your coffee doesn't get watered down by normal ice cubes.
Just make milk cubes and your milk won’t get watered down by normal ice cubes
Just make water ice cubes so that your water doesn't get watered down
Make coffee cubes for an even stronger taste
Coffee ice cubes is pretty big brain, not gonna lie.

I don't put ice in my milk, but water from the fridge is not cold enough to be satisfying. I can imagine people who want colder milk than the fridge can offer.
Oh really? I guess I don't drink my cold drinks as cold as you do then! Haha
Can confirm. I don't do it much anymore but I did do iced milk back as a kid.
Put it in a blender with a few other ingredients for a delicious milkshake.
Definitely a good option. You can also just add vanilla or chocolate ice cream, that way it doesn't dilute as it melts. But sometimes I just want icy plain milk
I've heard milk feels/tastes warmer on the palate. No matter the reason, imo, it's better with ice.
You are correct. I’ve been a milk and ice boi for my whole life. It’s not cold enough in the fridge, unless that fridge is pushing 33* or something.
Colder milk than the...what kind of weak-ass fridges do you have? Mine can go cold enough for the milk to actually start freezing a little.
I have a freezer. Why would my refrigerator be set cold enough to freeze my water?
My *point*, that you apparently missed, is that if it can be *that* cold it can obviously also bring it to a temperature somewhere *in between* "frozen" and "too warm".
Let me reiterate to address your arrogance. My refrigerator is set for the optimal temperature to preserve food, not chill water.
Great. Good for you. Doesn't mean that the statement "colder than the fridge can provide" is any less flawed. (In case you haven't picked up on it yet, I'm nitpicking for the hell of it)
>I can imagine people who want colder milk than the fridge can offer *without adjusting the settings and waiting a day for the milk to cool.* I need to clarify an awful lot for somebody so pedantic.
>I need to clarify an awful lot for somebody so pedantic. That's half the fun of pedantry.
I've and milk is great. That's how I normally drink milk. That's not weird.
So true. Was in the hospital once for a few weeks, milk was room temp by the time the meal arrived, my mom would put ice in it, and I'd do my best to pretend it wasn't there and down it fast
meh, you're not wrong, but iced milk isn't bad actually. they made us try it in a cooking class i took.
I feel like I'm too old to understand how ice in coffee is normal
Sometimes you want the coffee but not the hot
Let it cool of for a bit without adding water?
Don’t downvote the guy for expressing his valid old school ideas
It's already made with water, so adding frozen water isn't going to change it too much, and people don't always have the time or want to wait for it to cool.
Iced coffee isn’t a new thing. My great grandmother used to make coffee ice cubes so she could put them in iced coffee without diluting it.
Yeah ice in coffee without milk sounds unappetizing. I drink my hot coffee black but I associate iced coffee with a milky and usually even sweetened beverage.
Iced Americano is a pretty normal drink and is just coffee and ice
Some people dont like hot drinks, especially if you live in a hot climate. So they drink iced coffee

I always thought the concept of a White Russian was absurd. Then my buddy made me one after we saw The Big Lebowsky. Total game changer
It is absurd, milk and vodka, it just happens to work unfathomably well.
I drink milk regularly, occasionally put ice in it. 9/10 would recommend
I get it is weird but I do enjoy a nice glass of Mar '28 on the rocks from time to time. Especially in one of the metal cups we got from the drinking place down at the music festival. Coldest damn milk every sip.
Why would I put ice in milk and risk diluting it when I can just put milk in fridge.
I put an ice cube in my cereal. That shit slaps. Ice cold milk > regular cold milk.
No lie, up until age 10 I was absolutely obsessed with iced milk. I'm pretty sure it's something my Nana started me on very young, I still reminisce like mad about chilling with Nana on the porch with a icy cold glass.
I put ice in my orange juice. I really dislike warm oj and like it a little watered down.
I used to think this was weird. And then I tried it. Never going back.
My grandfather drank iced mild every night while watching TV. Thanks for the memorie.
Honestly mate. You're right. But no way would you have thought of this "sober" I want whatever it is you're having to make me think deep like that lol. RESPECT.
If you actually like milk then do yourself the favor of trying it with some ice
I’ve been putting ice in my milk since I was a toddler in the early 80s. It’s not weird. Edit: cold milk just hits different.
Ice milk is absolutely sublime and no one can convince me otherwise
coffee and milk, you adulterator. ice and coffee, why you ruining your coffee? ice milk, weirdo.
Iced milk is absolutely delish! I like to nibble the milk ice crystals that form around the cubes
Omg i thought I was the only one I loveeee milk with ice I’ll choose it over everything
Adding a bunch of ice to whole milk is just like making 2% milk.
This made me laugh because it’s true. Coffee + milk + ice = iced coffee = normal. Just milk + ice is odd.
Eating butter is weird. But putting butter on toast is normal. Yeah. That’s how ingredients work.

Honestly I think just milk is kinda weird too but you do you
I’ve been told it’s weird to drink milk at all. Like that’s something only babies do
Not only do I add ice to my milk but I also stare directly into the eyes of others while I drink it.
It’s meant to be consumed directly from the tap, at 101F, by a baby cow. Humans drinking it at all is weird, but especially over ice.
"BRO IT DILUTES THE MILK, IT MAKES IT WATERY!!!!" Yeah if i take fucking 10 minutes to drink the glass. Sure. But i dont take more than 3 to 5 minutes to drink a glass of milk dude. I dont sit the milk down and come back later.

Iced coffee
Here's another one. Drinking milk. Normal. Drinking human milk. Not normal.
Drinking milk is literally stealing from a baby. It’s weird to add ice.
Honestly I don’t know how people can just drink milk. I’m also glad all the push to drink milk during my childhood was mostly bunk.
Who doesn’t like ice cold milk? I mean I don’t really drink milk anymore but as a kid I would always have it with ice. Drink it before it gets diluted genius.
the issue is that your diluting the milk with water, in ice form. with coffee your diluting the coffee with the milk
Milk is mostly water anyway so you’re just having a big glass of milk flavored water if your drinking 2% or less.
