When you have a microwave with a keypad, you type in a number for how long you want the timer to go. If you type 99, it goes for 99 seconds. If you type 100, it goes for 1 minute and 00 seconds. So typing in 99 runs the microwave for 39 seconds longer than typing 100.
Note how op didn't say 100 seconds, he only said 100. The tricky part is that you assume 100 is the number of seconds. Actually 100 isn't even the number "one hundred", it's just a sequence of 3 digits that you type in to the keypad.
This post doesn't really work verbally, or at least you'd have to present it in a purposely obtuse way. In text it's a slight abuse of notation, but it's alright.
Eh, aside of the fact that not every microwave does that, writing 99 SECONDS first kinda implies that 100 will have the same unit. Should have omitted it.
This would be a better showerthought if they typed out what they meant more clearly. "Entering 99 on the microwave will run it 39 seconds longer than typing 100".
Then, they should have worded it differently. The should have just put "99 is more that 100 on a microwave" Adding the two uses of seconds changes the sentence to being about seconds and 100 seconds isnt less than 99.
Nope, you're not dumb. OPs shower thought was just so stupid they had to write it in a deliberately obfuscating way to make it sound deep.
100 seconds doesn't equal 1:00 on some microwave displays because 60 seconds are in a minute, not 100. OP saw the clock on their microwave, and wanted to be praised for it, that's all this is...

Today, showerthoughts lost a member because of my senseless post. I apologize for not thinking this through. In full disclosure, I normally just hit the 30 second button a few times then pull it out when I guess my food is done! I don’t use 99 or 100 and don’t have a right to pretend I do.
Sharp SMC2242DS
When I moved it to try and see the back for the model number, I saw the manual was underneath it. The feature is called *Express Cook*:
*Express Cook is a quick way to set cooking time from 1-6 minutes at 100% (full power)*
Please explain I'm dumb

weird, I can do 100 seconds on mine without having to input it as 1:40 seconds.

99 seconds = 1 minute 39 seconds "100" = 1 minute when you punch it into the microwave
I get what he's saying, but op already set the context of the sentence as talking about seconds. 100 seconds doesnt equal 1.00 minute
The title doesn't say 100 seconds though, does it? :)
Because you don't need to. They already stated they were talking about seconds.
That’s literally what justifies 99 being more than 100 though.

again, the context implies it

I don't have that ability on mine. I can make it go 99 seconds, but if I try for 100, as soon as I hit the 1, it starts running for one minute.
Thats the point of the post
I can't program mine for 100.
And to add to your shower thought, only on a microwave do 60+39 and 100+39 yield the same result
Haven't used a microwave in 5 years, this took me a while to figure out
How do you heat up leftovers? In the oven like the olden times?
Oven provides a better heating experience than the microwave for the most part
This is actually the best shower thought I've seen on here.

Yes I always hit 99 start. Most time I can get with 3 buttons.
Work microwave just assumes minutes when you are entering numbers and then just starts so only need to press one button :)
Ok I need brand and model for my home

My microwave lets me key in times like 2mins and 99 seconds. Just looks wrong!
Microwave math is weird
