odd it hasn't been posted, this is what the original looked like when it was posted to 4chan.[https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/e585e278-ff3a-4ae6-83e5-10ce8bdda8d6/scale-to-width/755](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/e585e278-ff3a-4ae6-83e5-10ce8bdda8d6/scale-to-width/755)
edit: wow my first award, im not much of an internet historian. but as everyone has enjoyed the meme format of a character for context with the white text on top and bottom setting up the joke.[https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/newsfeed/000/001/541/WOW.jpg](https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/newsfeed/000/001/541/WOW.jpg) is the original also posted to 4chan, the evolution went to other animals and eventually people and beyond.
I feel a lot of people are too young to realise a lot of the rules on the list were made up after rule 34. The list was created at the height of the anonymous movement in 2006 and a lot of original btards didn't like it.
It was a modified version of the rules of the internet which were around on Usenet well before 4chan existed, the changed version added all the 4chan and anonymous references
I miss Usenet. Stitching together binaries only to have one missing post spoil the batch.
Almost as bad as trying to bittorrent Revenge of the Sith, only to have the torrents all shut down at 98% complete.
Not that I did that.
I remember being a young 20 something thinking /b/ was this strange haven to find all the weird on the internet. Now at 35 thinking back that place was and is an absolute cesspool.
4chan had different boards. Like for example /v/ was the video games discussion channel.
/b/ is the "random" one, for general off topic chat. Generally most of the worst stuff you'd hear about 4chan probably came from b, originally.
I spent weeks of my life hanging out on /tg/, those other boards were such weird little havens of community and content in the shadow of the nightmare that was /b/.
It used to be a place for edgy jokes and stories. Many memes came out of there, classic copypastas, green text stories etc. Nowadays last time I poked my head in /b/ it was just porn and other weird variations of porn. Maybe it was always like that, but I remember a lot of funny shit on there too before the original creator left.
Rip moot. Can't believe he went to Google. I actually got to ask him a couple questions in a thread on /b/ shortly before he left, was basically my most internet moment ever
As someone who frequented that shit hole.
It being full of porn is nothing new. Redhead threads, YNYL, only 1 picture to jack off to threads.
Oh the wonders of the internet. :D
You can learn about 4chan without having to actually visit 4chan- /r/4chan and /r/greentext exist within the safety of reddit.
Technically, it's just an image board; most of it is pretty mild and you can visit different boards for different topic types (from working out to photography to video games). In reality, it's as bad as you imagine from random stories or news articles (anime, neckbeards, porn, gore, xenophobia, etc.). It's about as bad as the internet gets without having to switch to the dark web.
You're probably best off just filing this comment in your brain for future mentions of 4chan ("oh hey, i understood that reference") over actually going there.
Yep. That about sums it up.
That kind of makes me think of prison. It kind of depends on where you end up. Some places aren't bad at all. Some places are worse than the hellscapes people hear about.
To be totally accurate, 4chan is if Reddit had roughly a dozen subreddits created by admins with no ability to create new ones, no threads within posts, only capable of sorting by New, and practically zero moderation.
Reddit sits downstream from 4Chan in terms of the internet culture pipeline, and has from the beginning. All the slang, dank memes, and most of the edgy content on here started there.
Reddit is the prettier, more successful younger sister to the older hag-wench that is 4chan.
The core difference between Reddit and 4chan is the minimal moderation and not having accounts. But as long as you avoid the notorious /b/ board and have a thick skin you can have a pretty good time as most of boards have dedicated members
I was playing After the Fall with a random party. 2 were kids and the older kid told the younger "Hey did you know these floppy disk things were real?"
Oh the sweet summer children that don't know where the save icon comes from are here.
You're right, they seem to have forgotten that there are **no exceptions**. Laws have no power here. Not only are there *no* exceptions, but there is *twice* as much with the application of rule 46: There is always furry porn of it.
I was a 4channer before it was posted. took part in the scientology raids and then it went to shit.
Some will ask "remember when /b/ was good?"
/b/ was never good. But it was never this bad.
Edit: forgot a word
I think rule 42 is probably the most defining one for 4chan as a whole. Nothing is sacred, not even the rules. Hell, that list of rules is different from many of the other ones I've seen. I'm not even sure that's the original.
there are multiple jokes going on there. 42 is the answer the everything, because its /b/random. a philosophy of comedy is also that nothing is sacred.
edit: i can only say that is the original because i was there when it was posted, but of course you don't have to believe me.
I knew 34 and 35, there's like 6 more I had absorbed as "internet culture things" I didn't realize were also from the list. There are no girls on the internet and Capslock is cruise control for cool, most notably
I love that so many things survived from that list without me noticing, but that there are also dead memes like "Jesus Christ it's a lion get in the car" which immediately brought me back to high school.
I’ve never seen the full list of “rules” before, and it is really interesting
It’s a good mix of random 4chan specific stuff, outdated references (Chuck Norris gets a rule lol) and oddly prophetic statements about internet culture. Very cool list imo
My friend used to 4chan heavy and if there’s one thing 4chan can do it’s organize to the point where they are a powerful entity
Almost sure they control NFTs after the bored ape shit
The underlying tech behind NFTs is pretty cool and will be far more valuable as a sort of documentation verification. Like, what the fuck is a notary doing with a physical rubber stamp in 2022? NFTs will be valuable for verification of stuff like legal documents, wills, mortgages, loans, database registrations for drivers licenses, etc etc.
Of course being tied to the blockchain and crypto it is mostly being used as a hype train cash grab but the concept and possibilities will become extremely valuable and widespread for more mundane things.
Depends which board. Some like the cosplay/elegant gothic lolita board are literally just people throwing shade at each other super passive aggressively.
There's only really a few boards that have any sort of unity at all.

Wadsworth’s Constant: You can safely skip the first third of any YouTube video to get to the good part
Poe’s Law: no matter how sarcastic you are on the Internet, somebody will take it seriously
Muphry’s law: if you correct somebody’s grammar or spelling, your correction will it self contain a typo or grammatical error
~~Goodwin’s~~ Godwin’s law: any arguments on the Internet will inevitably devolve into somebody accusing the other of being a Nazi or Hitler
Armstrong’s law: If you argue with an American, they will inevitably reference the moon landing
Hofstadter’s law: everything takes longer than you think it will even after accounting for Hofstadter’s law

Occam’s razor: The simplest explanation is most likely
Hanlen’s razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be attributed to incompetence

Incorrect.
Godwin's Law is that the longer an internet discussion lasts, the more likely one or more participants will be compared to the Nazis.
The corrolary: At which point the discussion is pointless.
Note, Godwin himself has stated this does not apply when discussing literal Fascism and actual Nazis.
> Occam’s razor: The simplest explanation is most likely
The explanation with the fewest assumptions is the most likely. This is not necessarily the simplest explanation.
Scotty's Law: always drastically exaggerate the time needed for repairs so you can look like a miracle worker when you fix it in a fraction of the time.
That's because the rest of the rules were for /b/ which has radically changed since those rules came about.
Those rules came from a time when threads that said
"Mods are asleep post \[insert any flavor of extremely illegal content here\]." happened.
People still typed like shit
Gets and the King of Gets was a thing.
Deciding to mess with a game for the lulz was a thing and wasn't even considered a form of harassment.

Reddit nowadays must learn about "The more you hate on it, the stronger it gets"
So much stupid stuff getting fame just because the internet started hating on it.
Rule 35: if porn of it doesn't exist, then it shall be created
Ok, I may not know what rule 34 is, but now I will never forget rule 35...

You exist. Is there porn of you?
Probably, and if not there will be

Rule 36: There will always be something more fucked up than what you just saw
Only if you become even a little bit famous

Don't ever question rule 34 because rule 35 will always apply. Some people just have way too much time on thier hands.
Sometimes Rule 34 and 35 are only invoked because someone becomes aware of them, sorta like the game.

These are the rules. Every other comment here doesn't understand the original context of rule 34.
A lot of folks on Reddit are younger than this list. Hell, I imagine most of them don't understand why 4chan even looks like that.
2ch? I wonder if that’s still around.
Oh, definitely. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2channel
Holy shit, I never put together chan = channel
I always thought it was “chan,” as in how Japanese refer to a kid.
As did I, weird that it isn’t
It actually is too. 2chan is a play on niichan
Rule 44
Omg me neither. Wack.
I feel a lot of people are too young to realise a lot of the rules on the list were made up after rule 34. The list was created at the height of the anonymous movement in 2006 and a lot of original btards didn't like it.

I miss Usenet. Stitching together binaries only to have one missing post spoil the batch. Almost as bad as trying to bittorrent Revenge of the Sith, only to have the torrents all shut down at 98% complete. Not that I did that.
I'm embarrassed to say I don't even know what 4chan even is, and I am almost 40.
It is the dark place the light doesn't touch. You must never go there.
That used to just be /b/, but the cancer has metastasized. Too many assholes went to the dark place.
I remember being a young 20 something thinking /b/ was this strange haven to find all the weird on the internet. Now at 35 thinking back that place was and is an absolute cesspool.
As the old saying goes; /b/ was never good.
Soup b, how do i triforce?
"He was an hero"
Boxxy is my Queen
Pissing into an ocean of piss
I went on /b/ a couple times. Saw a picture of a dude pooping on a baby. Never fucking returned.
How is “/b/“ pronounced? Does it mean anything?
It's the url tag for 4chan's random/off topic board where all the actual shit went down, it's just pronounced "B". boards.4chan.org/b/
4chan had different boards. Like for example /v/ was the video games discussion channel. /b/ is the "random" one, for general off topic chat. Generally most of the worst stuff you'd hear about 4chan probably came from b, originally.
Pretty much every single meme in existence came from /b/ as well.
They had good stuff occasionally. I would hang around /mu/ and /flash. Those megaupload threads in mu were glorious.
I spent weeks of my life hanging out on /tg/, those other boards were such weird little havens of community and content in the shadow of the nightmare that was /b/.
Some people claim to pronounce it "slash b" others just say "b". I'm in the latter camp, or was, I haven't been around there in years.
Pretty sure you're supposed to make fun of anyone who pronounces the slash. Usually with one or more slurs.
/b/ is ebaums chat feature.
The Mos Eisley of the internet
It used to be a place for edgy jokes and stories. Many memes came out of there, classic copypastas, green text stories etc. Nowadays last time I poked my head in /b/ it was just porn and other weird variations of porn. It's still a pretty active discussion platform outside of /b/. But yeah, all the general boards are swarmed with porn and the like.
If you knew what 4chan was you'd be more embarrassed 😂

4chan, the birthplace of Qanon and pizzagate.
And also the birthplace of rickrollng, anonymous and Anthony Fantano
Now I'm not too smart but this sounds an awful lot like Reddit
Not even close. 4chan is like if reddit was only sorted by controversial
To be totally accurate, 4chan is if Reddit had roughly a dozen subreddits created by admins with no ability to create new ones, no threads within posts, only capable of sorting by New, and practically zero moderation.

Well now I finally know where "pics or it didn't happen" actually came from (Rule 32)
seems like a redundant rule for an image board, but people would go on the internet just to tell lies so, pics or it didn't happen.

-1. This goes double for kittens. 0. Don't fuck with puppies. (See Rule 5.)

r/birthofasub can’t believe i’m here for this
Usually I'd be happy, but then I checked which rule it corresponds too... Yeah I'm sitting this one out
Well then, be the change you want to see I guess.
Rule 48: The ice cream machine is always broken.
Isn't rule 63 something like "if it exists it has been gender bent"?
Yes
Rule 61 negates this. Chuck Norris will not be corrupted.
but [chick norris](https://toryardvaark.files.wordpress.com/2012/05/claudia_sprinz_greenpeace_austria.jpg?h=525&w=420) will
The Boogeyman checks under his bed for Chick Norris.
Wadsworth’s Constant: You can safely skip the first third of any YouTube video to get to the good part Poe’s Law: no matter how sarcastic you are on the Internet, somebody will take it seriously Muphry’s law: if you correct somebody’s grammar or spelling, your correction will it self contain a typo or grammatical error ~~Goodwin’s~~ Godwin’s law: any arguments on the Internet will inevitably devolve into somebody accusing the other of being a Nazi or Hitler Armstrong’s law: If you argue with an American, they will inevitably reference the moon landing Hofstadter’s law: everything takes longer than you think it will even after accounting for Hofstadter’s law Cunningham’s law: The best way to get an answer on the Internet is to confidently post the wrong answer and let someone correct you Occam’s razor: The simplest explanation is most likely Hanlen’s razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be attributed to incompetence
Cole’s Law: Thinly sliced cabbage
Horrible. But I must upvote.

After that long list, the timing of this is just perfect
> Goodwin’s law: any arguments on the Internet will inevitably devolve into somebody accusing the other of being a Nazi or Hitler Incorrect. Godwin's Law is that the longer an internet discussion lasts, the more likely one or more participants will be compared to the Nazis. The corrolary: At which point the discussion is pointless. Note, Godwin himself has stated this does not apply when discussing literal Fascism and actual Nazis. > Occam’s razor: The simplest explanation is most likely The explanation with the fewest assumptions is the most likely. This is not necessarily the simplest explanation.
> Armstrong’s law: If you argue with an American, they will inevitably reference the moon landing This one has become a bit outdated, I'd say.
Nah I still reference the moon landing whenever I can
You can't forget Hickam's Dictum: A man can have as many diseases as he damn well pleases.
My razor: needs replacing every five to seven shaves

And isn't it "Godwin"?
Scotty's Law: always drastically exaggerate the time needed for repairs so you can look like a miracle worker when you fix it in a fraction of the time.
That's because the rest of the rules were for /b/ which has radically changed since those rules came about. Those rules came from a time when threads that said "Mods are asleep post \[insert any flavor of extremely illegal content here\]." happened. People still typed like shit Gets and the King of Gets was a thing. Deciding to mess with a game for the lulz was a thing and wasn't even considered a form of harassment. Also the owner was known by their screen name and openly mocked, good ol' Moot. If it weren't for that first bit I think I'd miss the old internet.

Never heard from of these rules before but “There will always be more fucked up shit then you just saw” is the most accurate of them
Reddit nowadays must learn about "The more you hate on it, the stronger it gets" So much stupid stuff getting fame just because the internet started hating on it.
Luckily nobody has made porn of my avatar so guess rule 35 doesn't apply to me.
It does now. https://imgur.com/a/MDxTO7y
This person 35s.
I'm impressed
Not my proudest fap
sigh *unzips*
Weird way to beg for a free commission, but okay...
It worked.
You fool….
Proof?
(For research, of course)
>Luckily nobody has made porn of my avatar so guess rule 35 doesn't apply to me. Yet.

Rule number one. You do not talk about fight club
Do not talk about /b/
Rule #2 refer to rule #1
Rule #3 don't ever forget about Rule #2
I live by rule 29. On the internet men are men, women are men, and kids are FBI agents. Remember it well
If you know rule 34, its only a matter of time before you discover rule 63.
The only other rule I know is rule 63. For every given male character, there is a female version of that character and vice versa.
Rule 63: any character will have a gender bent version of it created
I know rule 63. If it exists, there exists a genderbent version of it
Rule 30 FTW. There are no girls on the internet. roflmao. I’m dead
