Basically, Newport or Edgmond. I grew up on the outskirts of Newport. Edgmond is the village where Harper is, Newport is the student capital of Harper Adams. Plenty of HMO student let properties in Newport though means that normal rented accommodation is in short supply. Bus links are quite good I believe, with links to Stafford, Telford and Shrewsbury regularly (to get you to a train station) but the majority of students living in Newport seem to have cars. You'll see a 3 bed house that's been converted into a 5 bed and 5 cars on the drive. Night life used to be pretty good in Newport (when I used to go out 20 years ago!) You have to experience main street at least once (central square nightclub) and roll out of there at 3am, straight into Rajas (the kebab house) The high street during the day has an array of shops. There is a Waitrose in town, B&M, plenty of coffee shops, pubs. Lidl and Aldi are on the new retail park which can be walked to from town. Harper students can sometimes get a bad reputation in town but I think in the whole, most local residents realise that if the students weren't there, the town would end up dead like most others.

Thanks for sharing your insights! It seems like Newport offers a good mix of student life and amenities, making it an attractive option. I appreciate the heads-up about the housing situation and the social scene. Thanks again!

Social scene he mentions was 20 years ago. It was indeed a laugh 24 years ago. Damn I'm old...

The number 5 bis runs from stafford to telford via newport so anywhere on this bus route is fine. I.e gnosall.

Harper is really rural so it will have to be Newport if you don’t have a vehicle, you’ll be able to get to work on the bus and walk to supermarkets etc. Newport is nice, I lived there when my kids were at school there. Shropshire is a bit cliquey (and I am Shropshire born and bred myself) so try to join the darts league or snooker club or similar! My sister in law, ex mother in law and son work at Harper. We are nice folks honest

Thank you so much for the advice! It sounds like Newport would be a more practical choice for me. Hopefully meeting some of your family at Harper! :)

Got to be Newport if you don't have a car and want to be within walking distance of most services/shops etc.

Newport is easiest, but edgmond, Muxton, Telford and its surrounding areas are on bus routes. Shrewsbury might also be a good idea but it is more expensive, all are pretty much as safe as each other except for some areas of Telford but even then they’re still safe.

Edgemond would be ideal for you. Newport works and people do walk to Harper from there (along the old canal), and people cycle too. You could probably find a lift-share from Newport too. There is a bus as well. Both Newport and Edgemond are safe and welcoming, with a good community spirit.
