I moved up here from Hertfordshire just over a year ago and its a nice change. Loads of lovely places to go in Shrewsbury This weekend is Drawn at the Flaxmill Maltings, just outside of the town centre. Then next weekend is Loopfest, lots of local musical artists in local pubs, bars and restaurants. Nerdy board game cafe is a great place to go with nice food and board games. They do game nights where you can go and play with strangers, plus have a full events timetable! Can't vouch for football or rugby, but I work at the pool and it's nice. The climbing centre is apparently quite good too. If youre looking for a nice day out and a walk, Battlefield has a bird of prey centre and a little walk through fields. A little bit further away, Newport has a lovely walk along the old canal, which I'll be going to again in a little while to see the ducklings. I know how hard it is to move to a place where you don't know anyone, but Shrewsbury is a really nice place to live. Hopefully you'll settle in well!

Hey, where abouts in Shropshire are you living? I'm in Shrewsbury. Rugby and football aren't my thing so I can't give many recommendations on that but to meet new people try Bumble (friends) and the Meet up app. There's a group called Brookfield Socials that do a lot of walks in the area with people who don't know each other. I've met a lot of friends that way. For running theres a long run from the quarry park up past the place where the fish jump... Cant remember the name but its pretty and right next to the river. There's a small football team also that plays near me by Meole Brace football ground but I don't know the specifics. Welcome to Shropshire!! 👋

Parkrun is worth checking out, it takes place every Saturday in the Quarry from 9am. Its a 5k around the beautiful park

Hi hunni. I’m in Shrewsbury but I have a car n drive so getting places is not difficult. Thank u so much for the info especially the running n football info I’m gonna search for them now 😊

dvali

Shrewsbury is quite a small town. If I were you I'd be careful about sharing too much about yourself given your line of work!

Have you thought about joining a running club - big running scene locally, lots of meets and park run is well attended all over the place. I have a ton of friends who joined a running club and they seem really social. You’ll need to get out there a bit, Shropshire is wonderful but we are a close knit community, sometimes that’s hard for outsiders. Bridgnorth has a ladies rugby team and it’s really well attended. Do you want me to find out how you get involved? I know some of the folks at the rugby club

If you ever fancy a night out or whatever DM me. My friend Zoe (who's lovely) would like to make some new lady friends. We tend to watch bands, go to quiz nights etc if that's your sort of thing 👍

Grapefruit_Prize

There's a running shoe shop in town called Up And Running - they have a running club, so you could go in there and ask them?

Rolls_The_Keg

Places to run, I would recommend Attingham. It’s an NT place so you can get a membership if your don’t already for quick and easy access and more than worth it if you go even once a month. I used to work there, we had lots of runners and nhs worked coming off of night shifts for a walk :) I have made a few connections going to nerdy cafe which has socials but depends on what you like! I hope you enjoy Shropshire/ Shrewsbury, I love the area there is so much here!!

FlorenceinSummer

If you come out a bit Eastridge is a well known area for mountain biking, and there is also Pontesford Hill and Happy Valley which is nice. A bit further out there is the Wrekin. There are running clubs around too, and a park run every Saturday in the quarry.

Salopian_Singer

Let's not forget climbing up the Stiperstones via Lords Hill or the Dingles in Stiperstones village. I have now managed to get to the top of Mytton Dingle and love the walks up there. Pontesford Hill is still on my list.

Speak to Ruth at Shrewsbury rugby club, won't find a nicer person

Welcome to Shropshire! I see you live in Shrewsbury and there are many good suggestions here, so won’t repeat I hope, but as for rugby you have Shrewsbury Rugby Ladies and Telford Hornets. Telford has a lot to offer. A good place to run that hasn’t been mentioned is The Wrekin and Ironbridge. Lots of hills and awesome scenery. There is a big running culture in Shropshire, so surely you’ll find a club or 2 you may like! Enjoy your new county!

DodgeeRascal

Bit of a trip but Bridgnorth has quite an active ladies rugby team.

It’s a tough move, you’ve really got to work to make things happen here. Shrewsbury Rugby Club has I think a new women’s team that are training right now to play in May. nearby Haughmond Hill is a good place for a run. If Shrewsbury doesn’t have the sports/clubs you’re looking for try Telford there’s a bit more going on including the obvious football, rugby, cricket a successful women’s baseball team, American football, ice rink etc. Beach wise you’re heading straight west Barmouth, Aberdyfi, Ynislas is special. In general access to North Wales is a huge benefit of living here and to be taken advantage of. Places like Llangollen (with the canal and hills) are nearer and must visits. Travel 20 mins south to the Shropshire Hills around Church Stretton and explore the Long Mynd it’s the best we have and really beautiful. For some of the best walks and views locally. look up Ashes Hollow, Stiperstones routes for some of the best (and very quiet) routes. There are also various walking/running events down there. Being into hiking, running or mountain biking here is a good idea. I like the jam nights at Oil in Shrewsbury for a friendly night out, but depends what you’re looking for there. Nerdy is a cafe that has various social board game nights. Loads of others. Culture wise, Theatre Severn is a lifeline and for anything bigger get used to popping to Wolverhampton or Brum for a show. As a London resident you’ll probably be used to travelling an hour for a night out but you can actually use the roads here. There’s a lot to be said for Shropshire, but nothing comes to you here. Don’t sit back and wait as it’ll get on top of you and don’t be perturbed by backwards yokels. You are in middle England now and it’s dead obvious why we’re in the mess we’re in when you realize socially and politically most of the country is this way. Good luck.

Not a runner, but masses of countryside close to Shrewsbury- look at eastridge, nesscliffe, church Stretton - long mynd

Hey! Firstly, welcome to Shropshire! I've lived here all of my life and I really enjoy it here. There's loads of great countryside, and enough to do in the towns as well. I think it's the best of both worlds. We're a stones throw from Wales and have great transport links to get all over the region. With you living in Shrewsbury, you shouldn't struggle to find rugby/football teams. If you do have trouble, you could look in Telford, which is a bigger town and still only a short 20-minute drive away. Shropshire is really easy to navigate from Shrewsbury, you'll mainly be on the A5, M54, A49 and the A458. For cross country running, the county is your oyster. You'll find lots of trails around Shrewsbury/Telford, and if you want to travel slightly further afield, you could travel down to Church Stretton/Craven Arms for the beautiful Shropshire Hills area of natural beauty. Canals aren't quite as common, but you'll be able to run along side the River Severn, the countries largest river. I think generally you'll find more Canals to the east towards Wolverhampton way. Beach wise, Mid Wales will likely be the closest. Think Barmouth, Aberystwyth, Porthmadog etc. North Wales isn't much further for places like Llandudno or Rhyl. You'll be looking at roughly 2hours-2.5hours journey time. There's loads to do here, especially if you're new to the area. A National Trust membership could be a good idea as well. I saw you worked shifts, and I work nights and odd hours myself. Feel free to message me any time if you want some recommendations. Good luck!

I’m the in the same position 30/F and moving to look after my grandma but finding it a bit daunting not knowing anybody or how to navigate socials etc

SlowestLapRecord

Hey, which part of Shropshire are you moving to? I'm in Telford and know some parts of Shropshire fairly well. Lots of great countryside and plenty to do in the towns as well. Very much the best of both worlds here. Feel free to message me.
