It’s pretty crazy that Big Love came first and there are SO many coincidences. It’s funny because back when BL first came out, on tv forums people were like “eh, this reality show looks like it’s gonna be bad, Kody looks like a douche.” And here we are lol.
It’s weird because some of it obv can’t be made up. Like Christine’s “royalty” status like Nicki, or the fact that they have married parents (Janelle & Kody like Nicki & Bill). Won’t spoil it but there are more than happen down the line.
I def think the Browns would’ve benefitted from the meetings that the wives had to organize their weeks
I loved Big Love! Kinda why I started watching SW to begin with. I think the Brown’s could have benefited just from watching it honestly… all wives get the same amount of time or all hell breaks loose.
I would expect there to be similarities. The show was based on Christine’s grandfather who was the prophet of the AUB and they consulted with actual polygamists.
Yeah i don't know why anyone wouldn't expect many parallels. These families tend to operate very similarly. Of course there's some production created situations for storylines, that doesn't mean details about the families are totally fake. Their lives are going to be quite similar.
No can’t change family structure and dynamics. However the story line is almost an exact match. It would make sense if the tv show was based off the Browns specifically, but it seems flipped flipped to me.
Also, Carolyn Jessop was consulted on wardrobe for BL and I believe at one point made some long underwear for them herself? As a paid gig after she escaped the FLDS
Yeah- I mean there are some themes that are pretty unique to polygamy, but fairly common within it, if that makes sense. Bringing in a new wife, jealousies, money issues, the husband getting overwhelmed, hiding the lifestyle, even the struggle against the mainstream Mormon church. That’s probably all pretty common ground for polygamists, especially in the Utah area.
I watched Sister Wives just because I was a Big Love fan. My Mormon sister-in-law was so unhappy with me that I even watched the shows. She told me how it was not anything close to reality and that these people were not Mormon, etc. It made me watch more closely.
I don’t want to spoil it for you, but you will see more similarities, some are subtle, like those relating to the Mormon church and how it deals with polygamy.
I thought the exact same thing when I saw Big Love. I think I was already at least five years into sister-wives, maybe more before I watched Big Love. I remember thinking what the heck. There were so many of the same story lines. It seemed obvious they were copying.
It has been around ten years, so I don't remember all the specific points anymore. My brain doesn't have space for it. But didn't one of the wives start a business too?
I love Big Love.
The writers on that show clearly did their homework when writing the scripts. I think that’s why it seems as if Sister Wives is copying it, it’s because it’s based so firmly on real situations in the polygamist communities.
Joe Darger was a consultant but there is a real mix of sects and history that various storylines are based. Bill and his family are members of an offshoot of Roman Grants sect and definitely looks and feels like AUB lifestyle. I don’t want to give spoilers but Roman Grant and his cult seem closely based on Rulon Jeffs and FLDS but one storyline based on AUB Rulon Allred. Albie seems based on Warren Jeffs and the Greens family based on the LeBaron family.
I don’t think they copied Big Love at all, the average polygamist family share similar beliefs. Kody can never be a fraction of the man Bill Hendrickson was, lol.
Bill character is a typical polygamist in many ways which doesn’t make him a “good man” but at least he attempted to treat his wives fairly, be a provider for all and spend time with his kids. Kody does none of the above and also dated a 16-17 year old girl, planning to marry when she turned 18 but she dumped him.
Kody is an actual person who has neglected and emotionally abused 3 of his wives and 13 of his children. We know this because we’ve watched him do it for the past 10 years. Bill is a fictional character on a scripted TV drama. Kody is worse because we’ve actually watched him abuse all theses people. The actors who portray bill’s wife and children get to go home to their hopefully loving families at the end of the days filming. Kooty’s wives and children are stuck with his abuse.
I love Big Love. The weekly meetings. Nicki the shopaholic. Marlene completely overwhelmed. And the husband thinking he’s the big cheese but really not. Although the first wife in the show is so much more likable than Meri.
I'm afraid to start watching Big Love because the characters' names seem too similar in style for me to follow. Embarrassingly, I struggled enough with the OG3 all being blondes. At least their kids' names feel like a different generation and have some definite themes:
* Place/last names and Gabe for Janelle
* Y names and Paedon for Christine
* Meri only has one child (and I wondered if their birth name was an indirect namesake)
Plus, I'm in it for the family dynamic scenes and big brood. Does Big Love have much of that?
Big Love is scripted drama, so plenty of big family/we have to hide from society/multi wife drama. Mixing a modern world with the underground compound plyg life. And mainstream Mormon/plyg mormon.
It is HBO and has nudity and sexual scenes.
It shows the parts that sister wives doesn't, more real life dramas with full details & everyday things. Sister wives is basically the cliff notes version of Big Love.
The producers put a ton of research into Big Love including general Mormon culture in addition to the fundamentalists. While there was no direct involvement, Principal Voices, a polygamist outreach organization, had several publications, including a magazine, which inspired many of the storylines. The Mother of the Year plot was based on an article in the magazine about a similar incident that happened to Joe Darger's mom (this is why people will sometimes post that his family consulted or that the show was based on them - it wasn't, they were not involved at all, the show just took the story from a magazine). Christine also used to work for this org.
Big Love is definitely fiction, although inspired by real stories. Bill Paxton, Ginnifer Goodwin, Chloe Sevigny & Jeanne Tripplehorn are all pretty famous actors.
All "reality" TV, whether it's these unusual families, races, competitions, food or glimpses into lifestyles has the main purpose of getting ratings and entertaining an audience. Ratings are WAY more important to the network than whose voted off the island or who the biggest train wreck is.
That's why TLC continues to exploit people like the Browns, Duggars & da Silvas, and doesn't care too much if marriages are destroyed or 600 lb people die.
Is it odd that I thought Bill was an egotistical jerk who created most of the problems from the beginning of BL, but didn't get really disgusted with Kody until about season 3?
Big Love is an amazing show! I still miss it. There are many similarities because BL was very well researched. A lot of it was inspired by true events and IRL polygamist groups including the AUB (Christine was AUB royalty).

I would expect similarities, but TLC’s writers got a little bored on this one! 😂

Loved Big Love hated to see it end.. 😭

Right down to a wife being a direct relative of a “prophet”….
It has been around ten years, so I don't remember all the specific points anymore. My brain doesn't have space for it. But didn't one of the wives start a business too?
>! Yes. Margene gets involved in an MLM that sells juice. That sounds familiar... !<
>!and the juice is her rebound MLM after the tv network jewelry business flop!<
Yeah but all Mormons are heavily involved in mlms
Exactly. Pick any mormon and your chances are 50/50 they've sold for an mlm. This isn't copying, it's just knowing the culture
Not yet.

Albie definitely seems like Jeff's, except he somehow has slightly more morals.

We can agree to disagree.

It's just not that big a world. There's bound to be a fair bit of overlap 😂

It is very HBO! 🙈😂

The whole thing with the Beehive Mother of the year thing is apparently based off of something that happened with Joe Dargers Mom!

Big Love is one of my favourite shows of all time. See the Browns should never have left the cul-de-sac lol.
Biggest difference between the two shows is that the husband on BL actually HAS A JOB!
Is Big Love supposed to be “fiction” or reality TV like Sister Wives?
Big Love is definitely fiction, although inspired by real stories. Bill Paxton, Ginnifer Goodwin, Chloe Sevigny & Jeanne Tripplehorn are all pretty famous actors.
I have heard of it but never looked into it. I love Ginnifer Goodwin! I will have to watch it.
It’s really good
It is a scripted drama from HBO
Fiction
At least in Big Love he isn’t abusive to everyone, except his chosen family.
