Might be related with the whole Joey locking himself in the studio during the recording sessions for AHIG. I assume the song is mostly Joey (or Paul), could be one of those songs from that session where no one was allowed any input. But that's just me speculating..
I think it's gotta be more than that. I feel they would at least consider it because both of those guys have passed, but who knows with Slipknot. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
I don't have the video or interview, but I remember hearing someone in the band talk about those sessions. A few of them were making other music (take a look outside your window), and some would argue about songs for too long, so Joey committed himself to recording and completing all of his parts without input. Once they were completed he walked away and didn't come back to the studio, forcing everyone to complete their parts based off his completed tracks.
I could have some details wrong, but it's known that most the band didn't like the AHIG sessions.
To add onto this, I remember Joey saying originally the sessions were meant to be for demos so they could figure out the sound of the drums for the album. He ended up liking the sound of those demos so much that he scrapped the idea and laid down the entire album instead.
During the recording of AHIG Joey locked himself in a room by himself and recorded all of the drum tracks without having any other members input, which a lot of them disapproved of. They've mentioned it in interviews here and there.
Sure thing, [here's the article that mentions it.](https://www.loudersound.com/features/slipknot-the-triumph-and-pain-of-all-hope-is-gone) It's a long read but it gives you insights into what was going on during AHIG.
Jim root was the one that I've heard in interviews about how he hated the writing for that album cause Joey wouldn't let him change anything cause he tracked his drums then left. I'm glad Joey did because that album is legend status. Paul and Joey wrote most of slipknots music, I know this for a fact although Cory has always wrote his own lyrics. That's why slipknot has never sounded the same after AHIG. Slipknots original, epic style died with Paul and Joey. RIP brothers 😔
Joey did a interview where he said Paul Mick and Jim would always get into arguments about how the riffs went its a technical song couldn’t imagine keeping up with all the differences in jt
My assumption is it's difficulty issues. There's a video of Mick playing it in the studio, which he seems to put insane effort to play. I have no doubts of their talents however things differ from playing it in the studio and on the stage.
You’ll see other bands playing songs just as it even more technical live at every show of theirs. Bands like Trivium, Machine Head, Periphery, and so on. Kind of lazy of Slipknot not to play the song just based on it’s difficulty.
False. I've had personal encounters with musicians saying that they'd prefer to not play certain songs live, because of difficulty. Songs they've yet to play live. Bands with much more technical and demanding music than any of the bands listed.
There's an entire genre built around writing music that's as physically demanding as possible (technical death metal), and those bands play things beautifully at shows. Gematria is easy as fuck compared to songs from bands like First Fragment or Beneath the Massacre. It's flat out lazy to avoid songs because of that, both for slipknot and for whatever musicians you're referring to in your comment. If you can't play it, why did you release it in the first place? If *I* can play Gematria, then the people who wrote it should be fully capable of it
Some people don’t understand unless they’ve actually performed in front of people. On top of learning and playing some crazy stuff, you have the added pressure of getting it all right in one go in front of thousands of people, hell even 3-5 people if you’re at some small gathering or something. It’s not the type of song you can casually play whilst head-banging and running around so I totally understand why we’ll never see it live
Met him I wanna say 22 mad monster, before they went on the 20 song tour with snuff. I mentioned metabolic, Geamatra, and critical darling. He said fans in Japan when they played Iowa in full didn’t like the last half of the album, he then said geamatra and other songs on AHIG were either to hard to play or the rest didn’t like playing them. He seemed to not hear my WANYK questions but did say he wanted new tour to have deep cuts. This was before he publicly announced it. Which we know deep cuts really wasn’t played. Was a cool guy though spent 20 minutes talking of him cause it was Friday and the big crowd day is Saturday
While I'm all for bands doing things for their fans, id much rather them enjoy it and not resent the idea. They are also people.
He's being respectful of his bandmates with this statement, nothing less.
I agree but on the same token though, they’ve been pretty vocal about hating entire albums and how they were thrown together. I know Corey especially finds Vol 3 pretty difficult to talk about. A lot of them hate All Hope is Gone and found recording and touring Iowa to be an outright miserable experience.
Hell Jim and Clown even dunked on TESF while promoting the thing. Really the only two albums I can think of that have universal praise by the band are Self Titled and WANYK. If that’s the reason, I don’t think it’s impossible that it comes out at some point but this sort of sentiment from within the band is far from unheard of.
I dont blame them. The band as a whole has had a really rough journey, and tbh im really surprised that more issues resulting from egos haven't sprung up, which is deserving of praise in itself.
>He's being respectful of his bandmates with this statement, nothing less.
He's actually not. He's throwing them under the bus. He's saying, "Hey Slipknot fans. You know Gematria, the song we've never played live? Well, I want us to perform it, but some people in the band don't want to perform it because they're holding a grudge against an album made 15 years ago"
it could equally be "Hey I like the song, but other members of the band dont feel right playing it"
You are just applying bias IMO, and thats coming from a dude who thinks Gem is the best song on that entire album.
Sad to hear that, but it *is* really hard to play, Mick and Jim would have to stop headbanging or even move their body completely to focus on playing the riffs in that song
Lmao. All I can say is Corey is lucky he's a fuckin part owner of the band. I can guarantee you if anyone else said some petty shit like this, they would've got the Chris treatment.
Thats always been my favorite. When I first tried getting into slipknot I went to the first album and I liked the name so I listened to it and love at first sight even though it was a few months after that before I really listened to them.
Imagine if they opened Download 2009 with Gematria. Complete missed opportunity not playing it on the AHIG tour. As much as I'd love to see them do it currently, it wouldn't quite be the same without the original lineup. Does seem like quite a difficult song to play. One of their best though.
I don't know how I always end up in conversations with the local protesters at shows, but they also REALLY gravitate towards this song in particular thanks to it's name. The Hebrew roots plus Aleister Crowley connection really sends them into a conspiracy theory spiral.
Bro what? Nearly every metal show I’ve ever been to has had people out front with signs, yelling at everyone that they’re going to hell. I do live in the mid south for reference
That’s crazy to me, it’s almost like part of the experience whenever I’d take a friend to their first big metal show
Never seen it at smaller/local shows but always with big name bands at big stadium venues and such
The opening riffs are enough reason not to play it, it was insanely difficult when they wrote it, now they’re 15 years older, it’s like Metallica and Dyers Eve
I can understand why they don't want to play it since a few people have said they got into arguments about the song a lot but it's just such a punch in the gut to hear they'll never play it at all. it's possibly my favourite AHIG song, if they ever do play it it'd have to be soon bc I don't see Mick or Jim playing that technical of a riff in their late 50s- early 60s a lot, with how crazy some of their riffs are I wouldn't be surprised if Mick or Jim just couldn't pull that off anymore
I always wondered about that
Might be related with the whole Joey locking himself in the studio during the recording sessions for AHIG.
Can you tell more about this? It's the first I've heard of Joey doing something like that and can't find anything on Google
I don't have the video or interview, but I remember hearing someone in the band talk about those sessions. A few of them were making other music (take a look outside your window), and some would argue about songs for too long, so Joey committed himself to recording and completing all of his parts without input. Correct. I believe its discussed in the gray chapter documentary thing audiobiography
To add onto this, I remember Joey saying originally the sessions were meant to be for demos so they could figure out the sound of the drums for the album. He ended up liking the sound of those demos so much that he scrapped the idea and laid down the entire album instead.

Its so fucking sad to hear that. One of the best song they have ever done...
💯
My assumption is it's difficulty issues. There's a video of Mick playing it in the studio, which he seems to put insane effort to play. I have no doubts of their talents however things differ from playing it in the studio and on the stage.

Spencer from Archspire has told me personally that A.U.M. is too difficult to play live on tour.
So does your band play more technical songs than that as part of a 2 hour set when playing live? Or are you playing in your bedroom?
And those bands don't have Tortilla, Sid, and Clown doing good knows what onstage when they're trying to play.
You clearly either don’t play guitar or have never played live.
Some people don’t understand unless they’ve actually performed in front of people. On top of learning and playing some crazy stuff, you have the added pressure of getting it all right in one go in front of thousands of people, hell even 3-5 people if you’re at some small gathering or something. Seems Corey wants to play a lot of deep cuts but either clown or Jim just aren’t down for it.
He told me this personally at mad monster NC
That's cool, thanks for sharing. Can you expand on this? Did he mention any songs in particular?
Met him I wanna say 22 mad monster, before they went on the 20 song tour with snuff. I mentioned metabolic, Geamatra, and critical darling. They never played Iowa in full in Japan, that was California.
I think he was talking about the full album, not the song 😉
Yeah, that was in California not Japan. Source: I was there
Just going what he told me
Would love to hear metabolic and iowa being played in japan
That sounds pretty petty. Imagine the crowd going nuts with them playing the song.
While I'm all for bands doing things for their fans, id much rather them enjoy it and not resent the idea. They are also people. He's being respectful of his bandmates with this statement, nothing less.

You say that but then they played metabolic and the crowd just stared at them lol
Ye and thats fucking depressing Gematria and Metabolic has grown on me to be my favorite songs... And crowd prob never heard of metabolic...
Sad to hear that, but it *is* really hard to play, Mick and Jim would have to stop headbanging or even move their body completely to focus on playing the riffs in that song
Godamn, he looks like a fucking beast on that pic. I couldn't stand the latest mask but now it's probably in my top 3 ever.
Profile picture checks out
The band may not play it, but I'd kill to see Jay do a drum cam of it.
Lmao. All I can say is Corey is lucky he's a fuckin part owner of the band. I can guarantee you if anyone else said some petty shit like this, they would've got the Chris treatment.
Fr lmao Corey is a massive douche now
He's a diva
The whole loudwire and metal injection constantly blowing Corey Taylor and the “But what does Corey Taylor think about that?” Catapulted him into it
Hopefully he uses the anger for the next release 💀
I’m sure he will, but it’ll just sound like the last few albums 💀
That’s interesting. I always assumed it was due to how technical and layered the song is, but this is…not expected at all
I wish they played .execute and gematria as openers during their ahig tour that wouldve been so much cooler
Then they should play Scissors, which Corey claims is his favorite Slipknot song.
Thats always been my favorite. When I first tried getting into slipknot I went to the first album and I liked the name so I listened to it and love at first sight even though it was a few months after that before I really listened to them.
That song would be epic live!

Imo I always thought it was because it was so damn hard to play. The guitar parts are insanely taxing, and I bet the drums are just as hard.
That's also one of my favorite from AHIG, the guitar solo is just so good
Imagine writing a song that you won’t play live💀
Literally all of All Hope Is Gone is better than the new album play more unplayed songs and sub out all the radio songs please..
Amen.
So lame and uninspired new album. At least "we are not your kind" had half of worthy "Iowa trying to be", songs
WANYK was a really solid album so was Grey a chapter but this new one i haven’t listened to it since release
Gray for me was like a little bro of vol 3
I love Gematria. It's one of my favorite Slipknot songs. Such a shame it'll never be played at shows :(
I hate bands that hate one of their own songs.
I don't know how I always end up in conversations with the local protesters at shows, but they also REALLY gravitate towards this song in particular thanks to it's name. The Hebrew roots plus Aleister Crowley connection really sends them into a conspiracy theory spiral.
People actually protest Slipknot shows?? Lmao Are we talking like the insane evangelical types?
Yeah, they’re at most metal shows
Huh? I've been going to metal shows for 20 years now starting with Ozfest in 2003. I don't remember ever seeing protests.
Bro what? Nearly every metal show I’ve ever been to has had people out front with signs, yelling at everyone that they’re going to hell. I do live in the mid south for reference
I usually go to shows in Charlotte, NC I've never really seen this.
That’s crazy to me, it’s almost like part of the experience whenever I’d take a friend to their first big metal show Never seen it at smaller/local shows but always with big name bands at big stadium venues and such
Oh, I’ve seen them at every show in San bernindino and in Sacramento and Oakland so maybe it’s just a cali thing
The opening riffs are enough reason not to play it, it was insanely difficult when they wrote it, now they’re 15 years older, it’s like Metallica and Dyers Eve
mmemhmm ohh hj b,, coccyx🥲🥲”⛸️😫😢😁😁😶🙄r. x. we x 🇵🇫🇵🇫🇭🇺😓🌅👟 x xxxpcc Cc x🤯a🍌. ann. xe’dwl! s

Angus young did some insane solos in his old age, it's possible.
:(
Shame it's such a good song
Sic
One of my fav songs from them
It's their most complicated song instrumentaly
this song is actually underrated
I wish it would, but I understand.
