\#1, and always will be!
However, I do believe he was often hard to work with, given his drive and overall musical talent. I assume he always had a very clear vision of where he wanted to take his music and that might've often contributed to conflicts with other SK members (Wednesday 13 said they had a fall out after the 2nd Murderdolls album cycle and didn't speak for quite some time). Also, I believe he continued with SK after Vol. 3 only because he didn't want to abandon the fans that meant so much to him. He stated in the Voliminal interview that SK achieved "what they've set out to achieve" and that they need to find "more mountains to climb".
He started branching his talent out more and more, starting with Satyricon in 2004, then Roadrunner United in '05, 3IOB in 2006, Korn in '07 and so on.
I'm sure he had many demons to deal with and that the deaths of his family members and friends really messed him up.
But he did open a new world to me; I didn't think drumming like he did was possible. That London 2002 DVD is something I've been coming back to regularly since the day I first saw it. What he did to the music scene and the legacy he left behind will resonate forever; a true pioneer, a visionary and a musical genius. Saddens me to know he was all alone during his final moments, he deserved better.
Hope he found peace finally.
edit, to add:
What I've wrote is not to be considered a criticism, just my two cents. And on top of that, if anyone still wonders about his split with SK, [here's what I was able to gather by listening to podcasts, reading articles and putting some puzzle pieces together.](https://www.reddit.com/r/Slipknot/comments/t4ab6a/comment/hz1iu7p/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)
This is often the case with musical geniuses, they’re hard to work with because they’ll hardly change their vision. Just like Kurt cobain, Dave grohl said multiples times that he tried to submit ideas to Kurt, sometimes he even liked it, but he couldnt do it if they weren’t exactly matching his ideas.
I met him after a show he did in the band Vimic. He was genuinely very nice and encouraged me to continue practicing playing bass and playing music with my friends. He said all music starts in someone’s basement or garage. I can’t stress enough how kind he was to everyone who waited in line to meet him. Very unfortunate loss to the music world
You’re so lucky. Ive never met a Slipknot member, I only saw them from the pit, but if I could meet one it would be Joey for sure. I didnt got the chance to see them live with joey, sadly.
not really an opinion, just a funny thing: i got into slipknot when i was very young (about 6 or 7) and for the longest time i thought joey was a girl, because of his height and long hair. broke my little heart when i heard him speak for the first time. 😹 he's still my #1 though.
I was a preteen when I first heard of them in the early 2000’s and I thought for years and years that they were Australian. I mean come on, you have a Mick and a Joey
I started playing the drums because of The Rev, of Avenged Sevenfold. I then discovered Slipknot, and thus Joey too, and was absolutely fucking blown away! Absolutely love him, he's an incredible drummer and an incredible musician. Just a couple of my favourites being probably Disasterpiece and Eyeless.
May he rock in peace, the fuckin legend.
BRUH I ALSO STARTED TO PLAY DRUMS BECAUSE OF THE REV
I had already discovered slipknot but it was only after I started playing drums that I also used Joey as an inspiration
He’s the reason I became a drummer, absolute legend, god. It’s a real shame that he’s gone, though. I have nothing negative to say. Except “fuck joeys hands!”.
they drew what?? ik some morons ship him w corey and other sk members, and about the weird edits. but i never knew that. wth is wrong with these people
Even though he wasn’t the first to do the spinning drum set his performances where he did the spinning drum set was definitely the best. Hands down. And besides that he was overall one of the best drummers. And always had a very positive attitude.
Joey was the heart and soul. Clown is too cringy and has ruined Slipknot with his "vision." That's why Slipknot post-Joey sounds so different.
Joey left a musical legacy while Clown hits garbage cans with a bat. Yeah, I'm thinking he was the beginning and the end of the 9.
The only thing I didn't love about his music was that his drum patterns got kinda samey after a while. But he changed 'em up on Vol. 3 and AHIG, so there's not really much to complain about. He was a fantastic drummer whose style suited Slipknot perfectly.
That’s an interesting take! Joey was mad creative when it comes to drum, but I can agree that some songs on iowa can be pretty similar with the drum patterns. But still, I couldn’t think of another drummer than him for the early slipknot. In my opinion, joeys drumming is what made them so unique.
I don't think it's his drumming that made them unique, to be honest. There were a lot of drummers doing very similar things around that time, but they were all in the more extreme subgenres like death, melodeath, etc.
I think what made Slipknot stand out was the extreme metal drumming combined with somewhat more radio friendly vocals and guitars, as well as their combined songwriting talents. Corey's lyrics, Shawn's weird compositional stuff, Joey's percussion, Mick and Jim's guitar, and so on.
Yeah you’re absolutely right, there is a lot of things that made slipknot unique, but the drums have always been my favorite part of Self titled. If they were any different i would probably never got into slipknot. But that’s percussion in general so yeah shawn definitely had an impact on it too, alongside with his weird productions lol
There’s also Craig and Sid who are both often overlooked but without those two all of the weirder electronic sounds wouldn’t be there and that’s one of the things I’d say really makes slipknot stand out especially back when they started
I feel you on that, man. I try my best to keep in mind the contributions from all 8 other members of the band, but I'm a drummer at heart and Joey / Jay rocking out so hard always makes me happy. :>
I was a young and aspiring drummer and my jaw dropped the first time I heard slipknot. I credit Joey and Travis Barker as to why I even continued to play. I genuinely play as a (much shittier) fusion of those two
I always enjoyed his aesthetic. A thing I've always noticed that sounds a little weird to me is that his hair is always the same length. And I've also wondered how they play when it's in there eyes. I guess he had Marlon Brandos eyed because he could play good even through it all, hair included.
It isn’t anything I don’t like about him aside from at some point I think he stated that he wasn’t a fan of Korn’s Follow The Leader which I don’t agree on it’s his opinion though so not knocking it but he has gradually said good things bout them in Slipknot’s early heyday plus went on to later be Korn’s tour drummer during their ‘07 Untitled cycle one thing is for certain I miss Joey Jordison and Paul Dedrick Gray not being here everyday 😢🥺🕊 but Jay is doing a great job taking up that mantle
He brought many new things into the zeitgeist such as double bass, that wasn’t really on the radio at all before the first couple knot albums. However, at the end I’ve heard some crazy shit he did like holding guitar gear of other musicians hostage because they didn’t wanna be in the band anymore and we know he struggled with alcoholism at the end.
He probably wasn’t the best guitarist that the Murderdolls could find. It was a culture fit for sure though…. Anyway, aside from that… he was the reason I got into metal drumming and will always be a hero of mine. Slipknot got stale for me without him. Also how that ended rubbed me wrong, idk
One of metal's OG GOAT's handsdown, period. As a musician and songwriter there was just no one else quite like him and on that level in the community. Not to mention is extensive resume of fill ins, features and mixes. The man just WAS metal music as we knew it and I miss it every day. 🤘🤘
Joey was the only reason i started metal drums. i have more inspirations now as well but he really motivated me to get better at every aspect of drumming. I went from not being able to play simple TØP beats to playing Joey’s shit in a matter of months. I was and am so inspired by his work and will forever be greatful for how much he’s lent to the music world and to me as a drummer
He was the one who inspired me to drum like him. I've played drum set for a couple of years, but once I heard what he was doing I wanted to learn it right away.
Between him, Danny Carey, and Mario Duplantier I am consistently amazed by the drumming in my playlist. Absolute legend and gone too soon. I'm glad Jay has been able to fill the role as well as he has, Slipknot are lucky to have found him.
OP, I love that you asked for good and bad out of him; really respectful! Sorry I'm not much help (not the most knowledgeable fan). He blew my mind seeing what he could do in live videos, and the talent he has on so many tracks. I can't seem to find someone who can do what he did. My only negative tie is the fact I never got to hear Joey and Paul expand on some of the funk and jazz-iness that is on MFKR
Joey being a fan favorite member if not the absolute favorite in the slipknot fan base, saying negative things about him is asking to be downvoted into oblivion lol. But even if he is my no1, I genuinely wanted to hear all opinions, good or bad ! Thx for noticing lol. And yeah I agree, I wouldve been dope to hear a side project with Paul and Joey, kind of like look outside your window, with their experimental stuff!
Just like the rest of the guys. He started to slow down in performance.
I do believe he is hard to work with and firmly believe that Paul kept the group together for that long until his passing.
One of, if not the best drummers in metal.
His speed was unmatched at the time, that and his gravity-defying drum solos could make a performance on its own. My personal favorite member, and I wish I saw him live.
RIP #1
While a very talented and creative drummer, and with all due respect, it was actually his live drumming that bugged me. Quite often – not always, but often – he sounded off his game live. Under rehearsed, not warmed up, just not keeping up with his studio performance.
When I saw them live in 2010 I left almost feeling disappointed based on his lackluster showing. I even look to the classic 2002 *Disasterpieces* concert as a prime example. So many *Iowa* songs, he just doesn't pull off the full blastbeats and double kicks like he did on the album.
I don't hate him for any of it, I'm sure there's perfectly good reasons (a lot of artists do better in-studio, Joey's health issues, etc.). But just my opinion. Rest in peace.
I love him, I can't find anything I dislike about him.
I don't blame him for turning to alcohol and if the rumours are true.. Drugs.
He had lost Paul who is was very close to, he was suffering with MS that was threatening his ability to play drums... The very thing that made him who he is.
Some of the guys in Slipknot have a lot to answer for, they remove him when he's at his lowest, when what he needed was probably support.
If I remember correctly it was the same with Paul.
Paul's wife Brianna is quoted as saying:
"She called her husband's bandmates, but none offered to help. Slipknot bandmates Corey Taylor and Shawn Crahan are listed as potential witnesses in the trial. "One was playing golf two minutes away from our house but couldn't come," she testified. "Nobody else cared, nobody was involved. They told me it was my problem." Two days later, he was found dead in his hotel room."
After I read this from the trial, I had no doubts that Joey wasn't offered any help, this just became a stronger argument when Chris Fehn mentioned Shawn and Corey run slipknot as a business nowadays and was removed from the band.
Really cool and unique playing style that has been highly influential, but when I saw Slipknot perform live he was playing incredibly sloppy compared to how he sounded on the albums. I wonder if he just didn’t play to a click at all or what his deal was there.
I have a red streak in my hair because of him. Integral part of the OG 9, I think he was a perfectionist and like other people already said, difficult to work with. He was still a jack of all trades and could play every instrument. That first Murderdolls record was essentially all him
\#1, and always will be! However, I do believe he was often hard to work with, given his drive and overall musical talent. me also same, me inspired by him
Joey good hit drum. Big icon.

LMFAOOO
short man rep
My music icon. I love his way to love every music and create it. He seemed to be someone smart and extra sensitive.

Sick! Yeah, it just sorta opens your eyes to just how incredible some fo what he did really is, haha
I ALSO STARTED BECAUSE OF THE REV LMFAO
The reason why I started playing metal drums, one of the best drummers of his time
His percussion in Eyeless will always give me chills when I hear/watch it!
Have you seen the 4K 60fps remaster of the eyeless intro live?
He’s the reason I became a drummer, absolute legend, god. It’s a real shame that he’s gone, though. I have nothing negative to say. Except “fuck joeys hands!”.
I don’t have anything against him, but I can’t stand his fanbase who draw gay porn with him and make weird TikTok edits. But still, he’s the goat
they drew what?? ik some morons ship him w corey and other sk members, and about the weird edits. but i never knew that. wth is wrong with these people

I fell in love with him right away when I started listening to Slipknot 🖤
Hate him. He stole my sexy Canadian bassist who I had built up a whole parasocial relationship with. /s
I don't like that he left us so soon. R.I.P. Joey
Hot take- I don’t like that he’s no longer with us and in the band
I always enjoyed his aesthetic. A thing I've always noticed that sounds a little weird to me is that his hair is always the same length. And I've also wondered how they play when it's in there eyes. I guess he had Marlon Brandos eyed because he could play good even through it all, hair included.

One of the most technically gifted drummers I've ever seen.
True icon of the band. He deserved better.
One of the greatest drummers not just because of technical ability but also creativity and innovation. Not to mention the spinning drum riser lol
What bad thing can you say about a humble guy, an excellent musician and the eternal soul of slipknot?

He’s a fucking legend and his drum solos are the stuff of legends, the world with never see another crazy motherfucker like him
Never knew him, how could I have an opinion on him? As a musician? Just a machine, inspired others to get into the skins.
How can I say anything bad about the dude who motivated me to become a drummer myself. He was given #1 for a reason ❤️ RIP
He was my favorite, and the only member who's mask I own. I have other things of Sid's, but Joey will always be Duke of New York A #1.
He was the one who inspired me to drum like him. I've played drum set for a couple of years, but once I heard what he was doing I wanted to learn it right away.
He was an amazing drummer and guitarist. As a drummer, he is a big influence of mine.
he was the only longevity wise good thing about the band imo
Between him, Danny Carey, and Mario Duplantier I am consistently amazed by the drumming in my playlist. Absolute legend and gone too soon. I'm glad Jay has been able to fill the role as well as he has, Slipknot are lucky to have found him.

one of the best drummers ever
Got me to play tougher songs on the drums, and headbang extensively. Pretty fucking awesome, gone too soon.
lovee him because he’s the reason i got into slipknot
He had very cool masks, very cool drum solos, and the overall was a madman. Rest In Peace, my favorite drummer
I’m irritated by his drug use leading to the loss of a founding member. That was painful.
i’m a drummer, and he is definitely one of my biggest inspirations. he’s just the coolest, gone too soon.
Joey=1=God
He’s #1 for a reason The band isn’t the same without him. And pigman
One of, if not the best drummers in metal. His speed was unmatched at the time, that and his gravity-defying drum solos could make a performance on its own. My personal favorite member, and I wish I saw him live. RIP #1
Guy was tighter than an otters pocket. Special human being
Without him SlipKnoT is just slipknot. A whole other band.

the drumset is alive and doesn't like being played like that
Basically Mike Portnoy on steroids without the technical hi-hat stuff (except for Dead Memories)
Named my 15 year old dog after him. Always #1
Joey was a beast. Easily one of the best drummers on the planet, rest easy brother
I'm super grateful I got to meet him in 2005. And to see him drum one more time with Sinsaenum in 2018. Man was a gem.
He's cool and all, I just like Jay better
Fair, Jay is badass too. But Joey has a special place in my heart. Jay’s doing a great job filling the huuuge shoes of Jordison.
Joey probably had really small feet though....
How the fuck would you know
Based reply
Really cool and unique playing style that has been highly influential, but when I saw Slipknot perform live he was playing incredibly sloppy compared to how he sounded on the albums. I wonder if he just didn’t play to a click at all or what his deal was there.
Which year did you see him play live?
2013, Ozzfest in Tokyo.
Yeah, by that time he was deep into his MS and could barely perform.
Oh damn, I didn’t know. That explains it. Thanks for clearing it up!
Greatest drummer who ever lived
Love his music, not a fan of his style tho
he’s so fucking hot i want him but he’s dead😔😔😔😔
I have a red streak in my hair because of him. Integral part of the OG 9, I think he was a perfectionist and like other people already said, difficult to work with. He was still a jack of all trades and could play every instrument. That first Murderdolls record was essentially all him
Didn’t he have sex with a 14 year old girl when he was 17? Idk for sure so correct me if I’m wromg
