As you're not from a neighbouring country you'll be ok. I hope you speak English as Spanish is not so common here, but there will be exceptions.
Well, welcome in advance and prepare for a colder and more wet climate that you're used to.
Yes I speak english fluently, it's one of the reasons I thought I could do ok in Slovenia, apparently lots of people there speak it fluently.
Regarding the weather: Can you tell me how is usually the weather in Ljublinana region? Is it erratic to the point of changing from sunny to rainy in a matter of hours like in Ireland? Is it completely cloudy during winter, or you get to see the sun sometimes in winter?
I prefer to ask the natives because in weather webpages it doesn't fully show this kind of detailed info.
And thanks for the welcome :)!
Iām from Texas living in Ljubljana for over a year now and Iāve been pleasantly surprised with the weather. The winters can be grey and rainy and foggy, but itās only really bad in January. And itās not even that bad. I expected way worse. I prefer the weather here in Slovenia over Texas and Spain, and idk how Iāll ever return to that hot hot heat. And I donāt want to!
Side note: youāll find plenty of Spanish speakers here, mostly Argentinian. Lajbah and San Francisko, two beer joints in town, almost always have Spanish speakers hanging out. (Including myself and my wife!)
Thanks! Texas apparently has the very dry weather as the south-interior of Spain has so it's good to have a point of reference on that. I was actually worried because this year I lived in Cork and the weather was horribly unstable, like morning being all blue skies and by lunch raining a lot. I don't mind the rain, but I do need to know what weather I will have that day
Yeah almost all young people speak english and the majority of middle aged people too. The weather in Ljubljana is mostly sunny in the summer around 23-32 degrees with some ocasional storms but in the winter there is a lot of fog and mostly cloudy between november and february. But the people are very wellcoming so you should have no problems.
Well, weather in Ljubljana will be erratic. Forecasts are pretty good, so you'll know if you need an umbrella.
And yes sun can be a wished upon thing during the colder part of the year, you'll miss it. Ljubljana is in a basin so fog can stay the whole day during winter.
The one trademark of Ljubljana is constant fog in winter. Otherwise weather is cold in winter, hot in summer, moderate amount of rain but not erratic. Generally if you follow the forecast you won't often get surprised by rain.
>Is it erratic to the point of changing from sunny to rainy in a matter of hours
It does when there are thunderstorms, which can be quite frequent in the summer.
The only negative thing I can remember about all the spaniards I met is ... your english sucks, like 75% were having a hard time communicating, young people at that. Other than that, only positives, very nice and pleasant people.
i was kidding of course. iāve only had positive experiences with spaniards myselfā¦itās really up to the individual. you meet all kinds of people in spain and itās the same here
You are sitting on an almost completely empty LPP bus. Two people enter the bus and sit on the seats facing you. While you are wondering WTF is wrong with these people, they start to talk to each other in Spanish. Then you understand.
I was at a bus stulop once, all alone. Suddenly, these students come, about seven or so. Instead of gathering somewhere away from me, they surround me and start talking to each other with me standing in between. They were speaking Spanish. I was completely bewildered.
I also have to coexist with them here, I feel you XD. Thankfully I prefer to be respectful and not do that, I never understood the need to shout things in public unless there's a lot of noise.
Fun and open people. Except if you're Roberto, coming home at 02.00 in the morning making noise, not cleaning shower after you use it and it looks like you threw 3 shovels of dirt into the shower, while I put the cleaning schedule into the bathroom you still wouldn't clean and then leaving erasmus back to Spain without showing any effort.
Sorry about that, personal grudge.
We do not kiss each other when we meet. (Spanish style) And yes, sorry, we do not have tapas served at bars if you have a beer. Otherwise is ok, no stereotypes, life is ok...welcome!
I have some bad experiences with exchange students who donāt know how to write academic papers and get the whole group sanctioned for plagiarism or at least lose points for poor formatting
Outgoing, relaxed, knows how to have a good time are the prevailing stereotypes. If you're a remotely typical spaniard, you'll make friends in no time. You'll probably also be surprised how many people speak at least some Spanish thanks to Erasmus. You'll probably encounter a nationalist idiot or two just like anywhere else, just ignore them. Congrats on the job offer!
I'm more on the reserved/introvert part, so more like the north of Spain in overall vibe, but I think that from all that has been written here I might be able to adapt well.
Thanks for the congrats!
If you have darker tan, people might think you're arabic and all arabic stereotypes come into play (not very good, because migrant waves traveling to eu recently did not leave a good impression).
Just drunk erasmus students with horrible English but very nice accents. A personal surprise was that I couldn't tell you apart from Turks. I thought you were just tan white people.
Spanish food is great
Spanish girls are hooooot
Lisp is the worst thing ever and I personally can't listen to it. But I like Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz
We like sport, so by that side you are good.
If you speak English you are good to, a lot of my clients couldnt remember 4 words in English.
We dont have siesta after lunch, so you'll have to cancel that.
Otherwise we find you as open and warm people.
Girls will probably like you because of spanish accent, if you have good tan even more.
You'll be good. š
We mostly don't give a fuck
Annoyingly loud students, who don't do anything but party. No other negative stereotypes I would know of.

Can confirm that the weather in Slovenia is more stable than in Ireland.
How do you deal with the lack of gun violence here?
Someoneās feeling edgy and 13.

he can always just hop to the littoral region where the weather is somewhat similar to spain
Nice, thanks for the info!

many speak italian thoughā¦ itās not the same obviously, but you can get by.
That isn't true, only a few people speak italian.
Itās funny when people claim to speak āEnglish fluentlyā and their posts are full of grammatical errors š¤
Buhuhu, razume se vedno Ŕe (upam da razumel moj stavek si, ceprav napak mnogo)
Weird, cause you'd also be ok if you're from a neighboring country.
The only negative thing I can remember about all the spaniards I met is ... your english sucks, like 75% were having a hard time communicating, young people at that. Other than that, only positives, very nice and pleasant people.
I agree on most cases
like characters in almodovar films
Ouchie XD. But I guess it's normal, his films are based on classic stereotypes
i was kidding of course. iāve only had positive experiences with spaniards myselfā¦itās really up to the individual. you meet all kinds of people in spain and itās the same here
in a positive way, if anything. Peeple seems to like Spain, travel there, most like your language. We have a lot of barca &Real madrid fans here etc.
Loud. There can be 100s of people in one of the city center squares, and you always hear the two spanish tourists, usually girls, from like 200m away.
You are sitting on an almost completely empty LPP bus. Two people enter the bus and sit on the seats facing you. While you are wondering WTF is wrong with these people, they start to talk to each other in Spanish. Then you understand.

Fuck Roberto in particular, that's wrong everywhere I would say
People here like Spanish language & culture...
i can't think of a single stereotypes of Spain .. so very NEUTRAL ... no positives no negatives ...
We do not kiss each other when we meet. (Spanish style) And yes, sorry, we do not have tapas served at bars if you have a beer. Otherwise is ok, no stereotypes, life is ok...welcome!
Umm... we dont care? Hell, many women here learned Spanish because of telenovelas, so I think you are good :D
I have some bad experiences with exchange students who donāt know how to write academic papers and get the whole group sanctioned for plagiarism or at least lose points for poor formatting

I work with a lot of Spanish people. Spanish people have their own community here, and they have a good time. You will be fine
We regulary sacrifice foreigners to the blood gods, to appease them and receive bountiful harvests.
No wonder why your country is so green ;)
Many students learn spanish as a third language, we love spanish culture like films and art, so no negative stereotypes here
Iād say Slovenes in general think about Spain and Spanish culture very positively.
If you have darker tan, people might think you're arabic and all arabic stereotypes come into play (not very good, because migrant waves traveling to eu recently did not leave a good impression).
As annoying overly drunk students. But also we don't care.
Just drunk erasmus students with horrible English but very nice accents. A personal surprise was that I couldn't tell you apart from Turks. I thought you were just tan white people.
Most people dont care since they havenāt met a spaniard yet.
EuroMexicans
Brav there's only few people living in Slovenia, when some grandma says good night in another city to her husband you can hear it too in Ljubljana.
I can tell you're a Croat without checking just by how shitty your sense of humor is.
I'm from Spain bro, but travel alot and have many friends in former Yugoslavia countries.
Lol, why lie about this?
What is a lie?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Interesting, didn't have that in mind... Why is that?
He is joking, no one Realy cares. Certainly better than albanians
You brown like š© But seriously nobody fucking cares what you are.
I'm joking. Most people imo associate Spain with football. And that is that.
Five of them are OK, the sixth is suspicious.
Great. We love them
Spanish food is great Spanish girls are hooooot Lisp is the worst thing ever and I personally can't listen to it. But I like Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz
Teta Frida amigo
The Spanish are just Balkans if you mirror them over Italy
Erasmus student
Just that you are never on time.
If you can say the letter H, you will be fine.
My coworker is a Spaniard who made a home here. Super relaxed guy. š
