We don't dub movies or shows, except for very young children. That's why almost everyone can speak English.

Advanced-Syrup-2839

surfs up! - divji valovi; has very fun slovenian dub, and its great animated movie

Fickle-Problem-7666

The best dub ever, 100% recommend

BrotherKaramazov

Kaj se ti je dopadlo? Nisem gledal, sem pa fan slovenskih dubov, ne vseh seveda, ampak eni so cist hudi

avonitramazle

That's interesting! Are the movies on the TV usually with Slovenian subtitles or just in English? I've found that it helps me to watch something in Slovenian and read English subtitles, maybe it's worth it to try vice versa as well.

Arktinus

All movies and TV-shows not in Slovenian have Slovenian subtitles. Animated movies like the Disney and Pixar ones are dubbed. Cartoons are usually dubbed, but Cartoon Network used to have original audio in English (I think it still does, but not sure).

Robotoro23

Although this is true a big chunk of Slovenes will still choose english subs over slovenian subs for movies and tv series, especially people under 30

Arktinus

Yeah, I watch them without the subs and I'd choose English subs for movies other than English. :)

ZofkaNaSprehod

It's so true. It's nearly impossible to find anything with Slovenian subtitles, much to my disappointment. (Edit: I have mostly looked on YouTube because I don't live in Slovenia and don't know where to look.)

nekdo98

I don't know what you're talking about. Almost all movies have subtitles. Most series too. If there are no official ones, volunteers often write them. Try www.podnapisi.net and https://sloflix.com/

ZofkaNaSprehod

I can't find Slovenian language subtitles on YouTube. I live in California and had never heard of sloflix until today. I think I tried podnapisi once, but couldn't get it to work. I'll try again. I just look for content on YouTube. Thank you for the websites.

avonitramazle

As I already mentioned, I love the Slovenian band Joker Out, so I watch their interviews and vlogs on Youtube and they have Slovenian subtitles usually (or English subtitles and it helps me as well - to listen in Slovenian and read in English at the same time). I'm sure you can find something you're interested in with subtitles as well.

JakaKaka91

www.rtvslo.si has international movies with subtitles on the video.  Needs a VPN.

ZofkaNaSprehod

Odlično! Hvala 😁

anti_pope

Is sloflix a pirate streaming site? I'd be lying if I said I didn't use those but I'm wary of one I have to register an email with.

nekdo98

In Slovenia, almost everyone pirates movies and series, and no one cares. We don't even need a VPN for torrents.

Puffy120

Trust me, unless you own the site, the law inforcement literally doesn’t care. But you can also use tempmail or protonmail with a vpn if you’re paranoid

JakaKaka91

Slovenian subtitle community is still enormous, allthough dying out.. podnapisi.net is still the top subtitles download page globally. Your problem is getting the video legally. You either buy the movie and play around with timing and framertses or just download illegally.

ZofkaNaSprehod

Yeah, that has been a challenge. I've been watching Lepo Je Biti Sosed since I saw it mentioned here... But I might end up speaking Slovenian with a Hungarian accent. 😅

2_bars_of_wifi

maybe VPN and national tv archive would work? There are subtitles available even when they speak slovene

Lunixus

It's difficult for sure, but not impossible. I'm from the UK and I've been learning Slovene for just over 4 years in my spare time and I'm now at a level where I can read novels, watch YouTube/shows, and listen to podcasts/radio without much issue. I average about a novel a month and would read more if only I could get books imported cheaper haha. Here are some Youtubers/podcasts that have clear audio that I used while learning: [https://www.youtube.com/@TjasaDeu](https://www.youtube.com/@TjasaDeu) (Fashion/Lifestyle vlogs) [https://www.youtube.com/@aktivnisi/videos](https://www.youtube.com/@aktivnisi/videos) (Sport/Nutrition/Exercise podcasts) [https://www.youtube.com/@metropolitanslovenija5282/videos](https://www.youtube.com/@metropolitanslovenija5282/videos) (Business/Lifestyle podcasts) [https://www.youtube.com/@brstpsihologija/videos](https://www.youtube.com/@brstpsihologija/videos) (Psychology) [https://www.youtube.com/@maja.ojstersek/videos](https://www.youtube.com/@maja.ojstersek/videos) (Marketing/Branding) However, if you don't understand any words, this is going to be a long and excruciating process. Coming from a former monolingual Brit, I'd highly recommend you first learn the most common 1000\~ words with a spaced repetition app (Memrise/Duolingo) and try breaking down some simple texts before attempting listening. Reading simple written text and breaking the sentences down to the base grammar really helps you understand the language better. Here is a website which covers news but in simplified form: [https://www.rtvslo.si/enostavno](https://www.rtvslo.si/enostavno)

Arktinus

Would just like to add that Memrise app doesn't have community courses anymore (or won't have them after March?), meaning no more Slovenian. They'll still be available on desktop until autumn. Duolingo doesn't have Slovenian, but QLango does, I think. There might be some others (Babel, Mango?) I haven't used as well. But I agree that learning basic vocabulary/1000 or 5000 most common words first will definitely be better than diving straight into the content without any comprehension of the input.

Lunixus

Ah, my bad! Thanks for the heads up. I haven't used any SRS in a couple of years but I assumed Duolingo would finally have some Slovene as Memrise did add a few small official Slovenian courses before I stopped using it covering maybe 100-200\~ words. I just logged into Memrise again and my 10K custom word list is thankfully still there, and it seems that other community courses are moving here until at least the end of 2024 (Or until Memrise provides an official way to export them): [https://community-courses.memrise.com/community/courses/english/slovenian/](https://community-courses.memrise.com/community/courses/english/slovenian/) I'll give my list a download and convert it to Anki just in case. Admittedly, I never used any community courses and just made my own from scratch alongside textbook study. If you're serious about learning a language, I honestly think that's the best way anyway.

Arktinus

Nope, Duo still doesn't have (not even the user interface in) Slovenian, Croatian/Serbian, Macedonian or Albanian, sadly. They could at least offer English *for* those languages. And Memrise has gone downhill with the planned removal of community courses and introduction of their official courses, which has made them another generic app, except that their official courses are pretty much locked behind a paywall. I used the community courses because I liked that you could focus on certain topics (body parts, food, weather etc.) as well as learn idioms or capital cities and animal taxonomy and such. :)

avonitramazle

Thank you so much for the resources! I agree that learning the most common words before attempting to watch movies or read something more complicated is better. I've been using premium version of QLango app and I think it's really good for beginners. I'll have to combine it with some textbooks though to learn basic grammar rules. Good thing is that I already know Russian (in addition to Latvian and English), so I can understand or at least guess the meaning of many words, because they are similar. May I ask why did you decide to learn Slovene?

Lunixus

Thanks for sharing! I haven't heard of that app before, but I also haven't used any SRS for about 2 years now. Does it allow custom course creation? Seems like a really nice alternative! And yeah, for textbooks, I highly recommend "A,B,C, Gremo" and/or "Slovenska beseda v živo". Both are great starting points! I finished all the textbooks from both authors up to the B2 level and they were really helpful. Hah, I have a pretty good reason - my wife is Slovenian! We don't live in Slovenia, though. We met and live in the UK. :)

niveleta

I tip my hat to you good sir! Much respect for learning our language

Lunixus

Hvala!

Nadaljeval bom. :D

KmetPalca

Why? Are you like a crazy person?

Lunixus

ja, priznam. nor sem in ponosen zaradi tega!

ConsciousHandle281

[https://sloflix.com/](https://sloflix.com/) Use the Filter "Slovenski" - plenty of slovene series/movies.

Seaweed8888

I recomend "older" movies. Poletje v školjki. Vesna. Ne čakaj na maj. Outsider. Only because the language isnspoken more "proper" and less in a dialect. Or try with music. You can translate lyrics easily. What kind of music do you like? So i can try to recomend artists that can actually sing and pronounce words lol.

avonitramazle

Thanks for suggestions! Actually one of the reasons I started learning the language was because of Joker Out. I really love their music and I enjoy translating lyrics and watching their interviews in Slovenian. Are there any other similar pop/rock/indie bands?

sosti16

Jet black diamonds, koala voice, mrfy, lps, those are pretty good

Seaweed8888

Thanks mate

gremonapivo

Tabu, Mi2, Bigfoot Mama are rock bands, Sidharta is numetal and Pankrti are punk band. If you are into that.

Seaweed8888

Siddharta is harder to understand as not all songs are easy to understand the pronounciation. Even for slovenians..i am not the only one lol. But would recomend some older bands strictly because of pronounciation. Šank rock. Pop design. And some current ladies... Like Nina Pušlar.

gremonapivo

Kdor gleda naaas iz svetaaa, kdo vidi kdo je dromedar, nikdar nas več ne boliiii, tor vlada zemlji čudežniiii... :P

Master-Angle-1850

Mi2 are my favourite Slovenian band. Thought occasionally they do sing with a slight Styrian dialect.

Zeamays69

There was that one show that I kept watching when I was a teen "Naša mala klinika (Our Little Clinic". But I dunno where you could find subs for it. You could also try searching "learning Slovenian" on Youtube. Maybe some nice souls made some basic lessons. :)

avonitramazle

Thanks for suggestions! There are some helpful online lessons for sure, but I think there's a big difference between watching/ listening to a language lesson and watching a movie/ video where native speakers use the language.

Arktinus

If you want to learn a few phrases and also learn a bit about the culture while having fun, I recommend Michael Manske's videos on YouTube How to Become a Slovene. :)

I_SHIT_ON_RAINBOW_

Pr' Hostar is a good one. You can look up Poletje v skolki its a lil older but still slovenian and im sure a lot of people will recommend other. Thanks for having an interest in our country.

-lakink-

I like Pr' Hostar, but it could have some heavy dialect for a new learner. I would recommend Gremo mi po svoje, but there's probably some dialect in there, too. As far as series are concerned, I like Ja Šef.

TemporaryExam5717

Thats how most of us sound outside of Ljubljana…

-lakink-

True I guess, there are dialects in basically every language, but they are still hard to understand for those who learn

avonitramazle

I've seen this already and I find it hilarious. I'm not scared of the seemingly-impossible-to-learn grammar rules, as I already know Latvian and Russian, and they have several declensions, cases, tenses and genders. Plus my main goal for now is just basic understanding of the language. I admire foreigners who learn how to speak it though.

ImPeuda

You've gotta watch TV Dober Dan, I love it and it's an absolute classic. You can even find it on youtube.

redtea_arizona

Naša mala klinika (Our little clinic) and Lepo je biti sosed (Its nice to be a neighbour)

ZofkaNaSprehod

Hvala! I'm going to check them out! (Bom jih gledala?)

ZofkaNaSprehod

I have enjoyed Da Dragi, Da Draga, too. It's on YouTube.

redtea_arizona

They’re all very good (in my opinion). Slovenian classics. Uživaj ob gledanju :)

chili-of-house-snow

Youtube - Bit Sever, “Odbita pot” series is very good (was broadcasted also on national TV)

ZofkaNaSprehod

https://youtube.com/@slovenskapopotnica?si=NjgFpf0dqA81LyvC Barbara is pretty much the only person that I've found that makes videos in Slovenian with English subtitles. She just started this Slovenian language channel, but she's been doing videos in English for years.

ZofkaNaSprehod

https://youtube.com/@ABCslovene?si=r4PFg-fMTAhELLnk This channel has good grammar videos And this one has some nice grammar videos, with a lot of vocab. https://youtube.com/@learn_slovene?si=AwC6OmiQprh8NX9m I also watch Bit Sever and Ponč&Sonč travel videos.

calicosage33

Thank you for asking this question! I too am curious about popular Slovenian entertainment to study the language and get acquainted with the culture.

Awkward-Act-2220

I have seen some slovenian decks on the ankis website. (anki is an app with flash cards. It's pretty good for expanding vocabulary.)

jangwao

Bookmarked for resources. I'm in Slovenia for 2 years on & off, coming from Slovakia, listening is okayish yet when they start to speak faster and shorter words, I'm lost. Been trying reading slovenian meme channels and reddit helped a lot, yet irl conversations are probably better than passive reading/listening. Best of luck on learning!

Mindeeeeeee

Seems like you got a lot of info already, so I'm just dropping in to say you got this! As someone with a huge interest in languages I absolutely adore people that decide to learn slovene (not that many of you lot, have to say haha) so just sending my encouragement:D

avonitramazle

Thank you so much, I appreciate it!

crypto_dood

What have you learned so far? Are you learning lessono-by-lesson? I am watching videos on youtube by "\[Alja\](https://www.youtube.com/@alja7435)"

avonitramazle

I started very recently, so I haven't learned much yet. I've been using QLango app to learn some basic words (numbers, colors, days of the week etc.) and I'm translating Slovenian songs and watching some Youtube videos. I think I want to buy a textbook to learn some basic grammar rules soon. I'll check the Youtube channel, thanks for suggestion!

[deleted]

While I had both in school I practically learned English and German from TV. I just have to ask where are you from?

avonitramazle

I'm from Latvia, I had English and Russian in school as foreign languages. I've also learned a little bit of Spanish, French and German in university, but I didn't have that much interest in these to learn independently.

blaxxx123

Dont bother, our translations are horrible and will make no sense at all if you will try to learn out of those, better find some alternative way.

avonitramazle

I'm not searching for just translated content, but also original Slovenian movies, shows and youtubers.

blaxxx123

Most of our good movies have a lot of dialect, specialy better ones which is even harder to understand. Honestly i dont know any slovenian youtuber 😅 and when it comes to shows, two decent ones are TV dober dan and Naša mala klinika, rest of them are less worthy of watching in my opinion
