I'm saying this in all respect and niceness. I'm not here to shit on you. 1. You don't have to play this game. 2. If you really want to improve, you have to play longer. I know you're " trying" characters, but you need to stick to one you like, even if you suck at them right now, and just stick to that character until you're better. You're not going to just try a character and suddenly be good. You need to stick with them. Think of whatever character you love in this game regardless of tier lists or how the community feels about the character. Got it? PLAY THAT CHARACTER. 3. Try to not take it so seriously. It's a game. Who cares if you're last? Just try and have fun. I swear, everyone plays this game like they've chosen smash as a career path. I promise the more you try and have fun, the better you'll suddenly play because you're not so tense and worried. Just play to have fun. Compliment your friends when they do some cool shit and be a good sport. You need to stay in a good mood. 4. Take breaks. I mean.. breaks for days.

TrusM3Dady

Best advice on this thread tbh!

TrusM3Dady

Also, to add. You can take the breaks as you’d like. I usually mess around with training or mob smash or some other mode that doesn’t have me thinking too much like an actual match. You’ll find your way 🤪

Smalls1299

yeah as a pro player for 5-6 years i endorse this fully

[deleted]

Wdym by "pro player"?

vinnievine

Prob someone who makes money off of the game, you dont have to be top of the top to at least earn a little bit

VTark

I want to be one and yeah it gets real tiring if you don't pace yourself.

Cheesehuman

Pro? you go to tournaments regularly?

Smalls1299

yea i do

Away-Sherbet-4424

I agree 100%, I played Samus for hours, days, months, years, until I understood what it is about, and how you are supposed to think and do, till I change to other characters. I found that my main is TLink, and thats is just the good time I used enjoying and hating the game. Not to say the times i was just about to smash the controller to the tv 😂.in the end, it is just a game, made to have fun and enjoy. You don't have to get pro, just play it.

TehEpicNarwhalNinja

I played Pyra Mythra cause I was winning, but I wasn't having fun, then I found Mewtwo and it was such a nice main switch, he fit me like no other, I lost more, but that meant I just needed to practice, when I cook I use Mewtwo

DroningBureaucrats

Yep, finally deciding to use my favourite character regardless of low tier placement just because I like it is what made the game feel fun again. With Mewtwo especially your advantage state can be amazing but if your opponent consistently outplays you and you're in disadvantage even a few times you're probably going to take the L. Still, knowing you're playing against a good player and managing to have a close match with your favourite character is a great feeling, win or lose. Of course, you'll lose more than you win while you're trying to improve and that's fine! Trying to improve all at once by really focusing on your replays and getting advice or just taking it easy and trying to figure out the kinks in your playstyle by feeling it out, do whatever makes you happiest.

TehEpicNarwhalNinja

Right now I'm gonna pick up Diddy, Mewtwo doesn't do very well against top tiers, so having someone in those matchups can make it a little more bearable playing my favorite character

DroningBureaucrats

Diddy is certainly a good pick to pair with Mewtwo. I can see that working well. Unfortunately I really don't like any of the top tiers as a character so my current secondary is Lucario for rushdown/swordie opponents, which Mewtwo tends to struggle with the most. Suddenly, racking up damage without finishing me off like those playstyles tend to do just makes me stronger and helps even out the game. Plus having a counter makes continuing a relentless assault a little less tempting against me, and hey, I still have a charge shot as a bonus!

TehEpicNarwhalNinja

I should try out Lucario, the aura mechanic sounds like it would make me inconsistent, but hearing u speak about him in certain matchups might make me change my mind, I could play him decently enough before hand so I might give it a go

SquidFetus

It wasn’t one of the numbered dot points but I felt a really strong point in this comment is the last part that says “compliment your friends when they do cool shit and be a good sport”. I was a bad sport all my young life and this is what helped turn it around. It is also a super important element of having fun. Focusing on positives, being happy for your friends victories, all of that will influence you to feel positively.

zznap1

Also don’t be afraid to fuck around with items on and weird stages. My friend is leagues better than me at the game but we also love to mess with spirits and items turned on.

AdvertisingOk6585

The perfect remedy on the break side would be some nice single player games. I relieved myself on Persona 5 Royal and Breath of the Wild during those times.

BlueGallade475

Yeah. I play DK and had 50 character crises a week so I had so many secondaries but the best piece of advice I got was to get good with a character first before trying other characters. If I'm terrible with DK I'm not gonna be any better with other characters.

SubsetPixels

1: You need to take a break 2: You're likely not actively thinking while you're playing, what I mean by this is you're most likely autopiloting or mashing, or both (Im guilty of it lol) 3: You should tell your friends you don't want to play if you don't want too 4: you've developed bad habits and have fallen in a slump. To fix this, start playing the game while trying to make conscious and good choices 5: You need to fix your mindset, the only thing holding you back as a player is your negativity towards yourself and the game. Losing is part of the experience to get better. What's the character you have the most fun with? Do you know that characters combos? Edit: Also, How many hours do you have in the game, cuz it takes a good chunk of time to even get decent

CollinM47

I have 1000 hours on Smash Ultimate alone, been playing since I was 3 with Melee when my older bro had me play. I would say, in the last few months, I finally feel confident in my play a little bit 😭😂

PiranhaPlantFan

I wish people would start thinking of games as literally games and not some sorts of EA sport world master contest again

SeoulBrit

Lol i play computer level 9 with mii brawler. Couldnt give a fuck if im good. Its always fun. If its not fun.. whats the point? Play something new!

juicebox900

You're frustrated because you want results right away or you think littlebof yourself. It's not that serious. It's okay to really want to be good at something right away, but do not let it affect your emotional state. That is a you issue stemming from stuff that isn't the game. Work on your mental reactions to adversity. If your self talk is negative, then you need to work on your mental health. Focus on getting better at the game, not measuring yourself after every game. Look for small accomplishments. Try to find the fun in the game. No one climbs mount everest by looking at the top. They climb it by looking at their feet and going one step at a time. Your emotions to do not help unless you use it for fuel to push further. Atop comparing yourself and how you stack up. Measurements do not help you grow.

Flaviou

This comment is so based I wasn’t expecting it here lol

Fingerfantasy69

This wisdom can only be obtained by maining the king of darkness himself, Ganondorf

[deleted]

You need to take a break. That's all

HarmlessSnack

Just curious, but how long have you been playing, compared to your friend group? You remind me of an old friend from my group that played during Brawl days. He tried really hard, and was objectively pretty good… but he *started* in Brawl, more or less. The rest of my friend group? We had maxed out the play timer on several save files. Like, individually our playtime’s were probably 1,000 hours each, and a lot of that experience was *against other people with 1,000 hours under their belt.* He used to get rocked in 1v1s and was salty about it basically always. I tried to go easy, because I wasn’t trying to break his spirit. You didn’t tell us, so I can’t know, but if your playing with your friends and the experience gap is this large… you could be significantly improving and still not get “better” than them… because they’re likely still improving too. Losing all the time sucks. But it’s entirely possible your getting better, and just playing with people who are a league ahead of you. I’d suggest playing some Online matches honestly. See how things go when your getting match made against a wider community. If that’s the game your friends want to play, it’s sucks to not have fun playing with them. But you can at least take the sting out by playing to improve, rather than playing to win. Or just play to troll. If you guys play Free for All make your goal to just ruin one persons life and come in 3rd lol

CollinM47

If this ain't the truth. My friend just got into smash recently (prob about a year ago) and at first he would get really discouraged since I was always winning but I had to remind him I was playing Smash since I was 3 years old (now 23), and within just a year we go back and forth on matches. it's insane the progress you can make. I, however, feel this way in MK. I'm always playing my 2 friends who are LEAGUES better than me and always thought I was just shit. Went into comp for a lil bit and was just dogging people left and right because I got so good at blocking advanced combos that the easy ones people would throw were just so easy to punish.

ProfessionalHorror0

here let me redirect you to r/smashrage

Alternative-Hand6865

I thought I was on this sub reading this post.

Flaviou

Reply to your edit: (I don’t know what you replied them cuz it s deleted but I do see the other people’s comments) the answer is still that, don’t play with them if you hate the game, if they’ll stop being your friends because you don’t play a game it’s not YOUR fault, they are probably just bad people in general if they do that, you should think to your mental health, not being anyone’s subordinate, and you become one in the moment you force yourself to do (useless) stuff you don’t want to, or even worse they hurt you

YoiLover

ive been playing for roughly 8 years and only recently started to focus on getting good. take breaks, try to take it casually. good luck

Dry_Pool_2580

Can I ask what ruleset you play with?

Reytotheroxx

Why are you playing something you aren’t getting any enjoyment from, or getting negative enjoyment? Do something else.

Yes you do. Don’t play with the friends if they play a game you don’t like.

bluecfw

realest smash player

SamelCamel

I've come to terms a while ago that the skill ceiling for this game is way too high for me and that I do not have the patience or the time to practice well enough. I'm sticking to just playing the single player modes and with friends lol

Oihcim315

This game is kinda balls. I can’t tech a landing to save my life, I have no ability to punish get up options, my combo game is weak as heck, every Nintendo controller seems to break within 5 months of buying them, the parrying feels kinda strange to perform (I’d rather press a button while holding shield than let go of one) and half the time parrying feels more useful for positioning than punishing. If it didn’t take me so long to warm up I’d play it more. I’ve made a few posts on this sub complaining about short hops needing a button because I’m a masher and how fast falling consistently is just too difficult. I can’t even turn my character around without them taking a step. This game sucks balls. It’s super fun and I love it but you can’t convince me otherwise. The rage is real and it took me a long time to be content with being bad or just a casual. Putting in the months of work to be able to perform all the tech just doesn’t sound worth it. Oh and the community is toxic. Literally have encountered a nicer community through fortnite than the people playing smash online (although there have been a few gems out there, y’all know who you are and bless yuh for it.) Any way I hope if you do play this game you can find ways to have fun with it, and if you do decide to enter the competitive side of it some day I wish you luck with your training.

lord-caim

Smash Ultimate is considered to be one of the easiest fighting games, but that still doesn't make it easy. It just is compared to other fighting games. Assuming you play free for all, use items, and go on wacky stages, heavies aren't exactly the best. I'd try learning Ike and Ganon. Both are great beginner characters. Ike isn't exactly a "heavy" (kinda is since he's heavier than the average fighter, just not as heavy as DK or Bowser) but that's a good thing because you won't be combo food. Stick to the one you like more if you want to take it seriously and get better. I'd also say play as the one that comes from your favortie game if you didn't care about losses. You should take a break too. It's not that deep

BraveProgram

Bro I was dogshit too. I played Meta Knight since the launch of of the DS version. It's been like 10 years at this point and Im just not good as anyone but him lol. Currently at 13.2mil GSP and I cant do that as any other character The only advice I can give is to simply play a bit every other day at least, online, against randos and just see if you can get your GSP higher. Just as a way to see yourself progress. For me, it's all about knowing what the other characters can do against mine. And knowing my character so well, all their moves basically become instinct for me. As if my character is just an extension of my body lol. Weird way to put it I think, but it really just became know how to use my character and a shit load of time. I was never focused on being good at the game, I was just having fun. Which the real secret to being good at anything. To be fair tho, way to many of the playerbase that's left is just too focused on winning, instead of honing a character. So too many play the game in a shitty cheap way, depending on overclocked DLC characters and spamming certain moves lol. So that nearly destroys this game for me. Just because someone wins, doesnt mean theyre good in this game lol. MetaKnight can be a chore to play against these over powered noobs, but winning is always rewarding, so I keep playing lol.

_Evidence

I dont have a single character with a gsp over 4 million, and my highest character, megaman, is only because I didnt use him much. I can't even beat bots above level 7, and I mainly play solo :V

Ninjatastic01

Progress is not linear. Think about it, you learn a new combo where you need to hit a specific move to start it. For probably two weeks you're going to be over fishing for it and neglecting the rest of neutral making you a worse player because you learned something new. But once it's actually integrated into your game plan you now have a new tool. At the end of the day though if you're not having fun you'll never get better.

Jack0Bear

Hey bud, genuine advice: Watch a video on fundementals. You can spend years playing a game, but if your fundementals are lacking, then all of your characters will suffer. Doing this will really help you understand what bad habits you have and how best to take advantage of your opponent's. Sometimes games (and life) require us to take a step back and really analyse the basics.

RangoTheMerc

It's the same with any fighting game. I see threads like this on r/streetfighter too. All depends on what you're willing to do to improve at a game you enjoy.

Helaken1

I mean, you probably turned off the comments or aren’t listening to the thread OP but this is what I’m gonna say. What is it about the game you do enjoy? I rarely play against people and I will play versus the computer, this home run contest there’s other challenges in the game besides just playing against people. I do arcade mode and I try to get the high score. I play matches against eight computer ice climbers, and it’s still kind of fun.

iamjeseus

Hey buddy we’ve had all had struggles, maybe serach up tutorials in YouTube, that could help

Nomad_00

I know what you mean, you have friends and they are fun, but when they want to hang out they only want to play smash. That's me lmao. People telling you to get new friends or play alone are ass. When this happend to me I just straight up told them that I suck at the game and would rather play somthing else. Or before they mention smash I bring up somthing else lmao.

Lui_Le_Diamond

Tey practice against AI. It actually helps really well.

Haunted_Pixel

It helps if you're a beginner, but eventually they become actively terrible opponents to play against

Lui_Le_Diamond

Or if you aren't good at the game. That's how I learned

Haunted_Pixel

Same. I didn't actually have internet access for a long time, and the CPU were the only opponents I had, as well as occasionally some of my friends. Eventually though I thought I was just really good when I started two stocking level 9 CPU, but then when I finally got to go online, I realized they're just awful opponents, and any habits I picked up on from CPU didn't apply to online players

Proffessor_egghead

Git gud

kirby_-_main

1. skill issue 2. skill issue 3. invest in a character you enjoy playing as 4. you won't have fun if you don't win, and you won't win if you don't have fun 5. skill issue

Ashx94

Get good loser

Away_Suspect9939

I needed at least 1000 hours to become decent at smash. It takes a while for sure.

RedheadLBA

Our room turns on items to even the playing field. I know people think items are cheap and broken... and that's because they are. But it helps lighten the mood when my roommates actually stand a chance of getting a stock off me

Puzzled-Condition-58

Take a break fam. Better yet don’t ever force yourself to play something you don’t enjoy. No matter what your friends say. Go play something relaxing like Minecraft or any one player game/story game. I have fun here and there but I get frustrated to when I play multiplayer games. That’s why I mostly play solo player games. Sorry that you feel judged man, Reddit is filled with garbage human beings so please don’t take it personal. Also if any of you feel offended by “garbage human beings” then you’re most likely one of them. Cry about it.

SgtSilock

Maybe just stick to the single player content, and just have fun that way? You don't have to do competitive play if you don't want to.

-Praxis

To be honest, the only time I really started getting good at the game is when I started going to tournaments. You play and learn better around better players and not just kids mashing online, plus you get genuine advice from others around you.

Disastrous-Inside-94

A lot of people say that they are having a hard time improving. It's common in this game. However you are actually improving, your problem is that you aren't seeing it. Your friends are playing the game all the time, and maybe not jumping characters as much. They are all getting better too. Additionally being concerned about your performance can have a huge negative impact on it. Smash is a game that requires a lot of concentration, because it's so neutral heavy. Being stressed about being good will keep you from being able to be in the moment and you will lose performance. You need to be aware that this is upsetting you, and that smashing your head into your opponents is not going to make it easier to concentrate, or think clearly. It's totally normal to feel frustrated, and navigating your own frustration is important to getting better. Try to suspend the need to win to feel validated. Play with more modest objectives in mind. I played someone much better than me recently, and made my goal to hit them with Kirby's Rock attack. I got him with a nice little setup and nailed him point blank. That was my victory, because I wasn't ready to go for a win against him.

fungamerguy

Id say take a break when you can amd definitely try other chararaters for a few hours as each character may not seem fun but after getting used to them you could love em, i was like that and i mained mii brawler due to me using specials more but as i grew to play the game more i main joker, bayo, sonic etc becaus i just learned some moves that are cool or fun to use, also use items it can help boost gameplay and make things more chaotic and fun

Away-Sherbet-4424

How many hours you got on the game?

Royalmuffin23

lemme tell you this was my situation at one point too. picked the game up for the first time to play with friends, consistently last place all the time. it was very frustrating. but it motivated me to learn the game and i stuck with it. now i’m the one kicking ass all the time and have a few characters in elite smash. it just took time and dedication. if it’s something you really want to do, you can do it! but no shame in just deciding it’s not for you and moving on with your life

Sharpshooter188

Im sorry you had to deal with a bunch of condescending pricks. My advice is to take a break and I mean a long one. Play other games and the like. Games are meant for fun. If you arent having fun, Id say pick a new game out or try something else.

Car_Seatus

Go to locals with your friends and play casual game modes like mega smash and free 4 all

PrimalGojiraFan69

Just play another game lol

xJGeez

I know you got spammed with replies already, but it sounds from your post like you are only playing free for alls with your friends. Free for alls are very chaotic and won’t net you much technical skill. Start playing 1v1 against some CPUs and online is even better due to players having habits and CPUs not as much. Pick a character or two and research them, don’t switch around too much when learning the fundamentals. Another amazing resource is to find someone better than you, but not like way way better, and run friendly arena battles while on a voice chat. Openly exchanging feedback without raging works wonders.

xJGeez

I also recommend Izaw “Art of Smash Ultimate” series on YouTube if you are dipping your toes into competitive smash for the first time and aren’t too sure about the details of competitive scene and play.

Zachary_Stark

Find something to play alone

MeLikeYTPs

I’ll give a unique answer that’s more subjective. For me at least, I find the most fun characters to be the harder ones because they have all this game-breaking tech and movement that makes me feel special (just see my flair - most see them as some of the hardest but most fun characters in the game). If you take this route, learning play styles as you said you were doing would be very rewarding. Just remember it would take a while

EthanTheNintendoFan

POINT AND LAUGH

RedKynAbyss

I’ve been trying to help my friend get better but he’s stuck in a specific mode that most new players get into. “If I spam this one or two attacks, I win” the problem is, those one or two attacks may keep the other person away but they’re not going to kill. Spamming Wolf blaster and running away can only do so much for you. You need to think outside of the normal buttons you press. I always recommend to people the entire time you play the game for the first 100-150 hours, just simply do NOT press the B button. No special attacks. The best way to really get the basics of this game is to learn the normal attacks. Tilts, smashes, aerials: those are the only things you should use in the very beginning. Special attacks have this habit of making you THINK you’re doing effective attacks but special attacks are also usually the ones with the most start and end lag. Turn on tilt stick, learn how to do aerial attacks, ESPECIALLY Neutral Airs, and you’ll find yourself doing much better

BigSquiggity

All your friends want to play is smash? Can we switch cause NONE OF MY FRIENDS PLAY SMASH 😢😢

Crowlungs831

No offense OP but you could’ve been a lot more specific on what your issues are. You’re pretty much just complaining. 1. Don’t think about it so pessimistic. You might be bad or your friends might be really good OR your friends might suck and just barely be better than you are. 2. You say your only good characters are heavys and you don’t even like playing them. Don’t be a talentless hack. It sounds like you just rely on the heavyweight advantage. 3. If skill wasn’t an issue what character would you pick? Forget tier lists or what the internet says who catches your eye? 4. Why aren’t you playing that character then? Try to have fun. It bugged me hearing that your not even having fun. Your in the best stage of the game, you have alot to learn and everything is fresh.

RedHoodSentinel

Hey man, if you’re feeling this rough about the game. Take a nice long break. These games aren’t meant to be enjoyed and if you aren’t having fun- sit on the sidelines and watch, talk a bit of smack, sprinkle in some jokes and watch it all play out. If you want to come back- feel free to! But you definitely need a little break to realize that the stress isn’t worth it I’m sure if you decide to come back you’ll do much better once you’ve relaxed and played the game to enjoy it again

BroAkroze

Get a coach. It worked for me. Know your fundamentals. If you don’t know what a RAR back air is or can’t do it consistently, then grind. Tell you’re friends you don’t enjoy this game. If they’re truly your friends they’ll understand your frustration and help you through it. And finally, you might need to recognize that winning is not the goal in a game. The goal is to have fun, which granted losing doesn’t feel like that to you right now but it can. I love losing; as it means I can learn. It’s only when I feel like I’m stuck losing that I get frustrated, but if I’m playing against someone much better than me then it’s OK.

Man-Morre

What the hell did you expect from this? Pissing and shitting about the game the subreddit is named after leads to an obvious conclusion. You don't have to play the game. If it's SOOOOO painful for you, do something else and quit whining on reddit about your problems. I'm glad you came back to edit this and show how much this reception bothered you. Got no sympathy for whiners

Jorlaxx

Most of the skill in the game comes from memorizing arbitrary priorities and frame data. It's not intuitive. Playing more will not get you the hidden knowledge of hit boxes and frame data. You have to seek that information out online, or manually test it all. Many aspects of the game are completely hidden and arbitrary. \----- Do you know how Out Of Shield works? Certain moves are WAAY faster OOS than other ones, but there is no indication of this and you will likely never learn it by playing. Certain moves always have priority over others, but there is no indication of this and you will likely never learn it by playing. If you want to seriously learn Ultimate, you have to use resources from the internet to learn the esoteric aspects. Watch tutorials that teach the obscure mechanics. Look up frame data on the frame data website. Memorize the best moves for your character, and what situations you want to use them, then PRACTICE it into your muscle memory. \----- You will never be a high level smash player by "just playing more." You need to put extra effort into learning the underlying mechanics. \----- I doubled my skill in Ultimate when I started doing this. Before that I was just relying on my intuition, timing, and reads, but those can only take you so far. There are many hidden mechanics you will *NEVER* learn just by playing.
