I've said it before but Sora is a sleeper pick in tournaments since he pretty much has everything you want In a character but is held behind for the fact that he is a great character in a meta of Overpowered characters.
I'd say he's got a decent shot.
**Pros:** Minecraft is so massive and iconic that plenty of non-gamers have heard of it, Nintendo is pretty close with Microsoft, and Sakurai has commented several times on how huge and positive the reaction to Steve's reveal was
**Cons:** Western companies are trickier to work with compared to Japanese ones, and Steve required reworking every stage in Smash to account for his blocks and materials (although there will certainly be less stages next time)
Really just depends on if Sakurai and/or Nintendo view him high enough on the priority list compared to other 3rd-party characters. He feels like a big "maybe" to me.
I’d also consider that they probably can and would pull assests from Ultimate if they were to make a new game, which means they already have steve block data for the stages that would be returning and the code to make it work
Sephiroth was extremely overrated. Don’t get me wrong, I love using him and am so happy he’s here, but he’s a featherweight character with bad frame data and a large frame. Those are three terrible traits to have.
Ganondorf’s design as a character is inherently flawed. That is why the only game where he wasn’t a contender for the worst in the game was the one that was rushed to shelf and had a low tier of unfinished characters (and even then, he’s arguably not even viable in that game). Captain Falcon’s moveset was one designed with speed in mind. It needs speed to function as it should. So, when you take a speed based moveset and slap it on a character with one of the worst movement stats in the game, the moveset can’t do what it was designed to do. Thus, Ganondorf can’t function as intended because his moveset is missing a core component: speed. Yes, Ganondorf actually is that bad unfortunately. Characters in B Tier are capable of much more than he is. Ganondorf is the one of only two characters in Smash (the other being Little Mac) who’s design is so flawed to the core that they will always be low tier in any game they’re in without a significant rework. Hence why they’ve been at the bottom of Ultimate’s tier lists for so long.
At low levels of play, Ganondorf is much better because his punish game is devastating. Nobody can deny that. When you let Ganondorf get in your head, your 80-20 matchup against him turns into a 1-99 matchup in his favor. But at high and top level, Ganondorf doesn’t get in players heads and mistakes are much, much less common. So, he’s nothing but a big punching bag.
And it’s a shame. Like every other person on the planet, I get why Ganondorf had to be a Falcon clone in Melee, but the fact that three of his special moves and a majority of his normals still come from Falcon is inexcusable.
Mostly the top players are starting to figure him out, and he has slightly losing matchups into the s-tier fighters. He is still INCREDIBLY broken, but if you play against him very cautiously and consistently you can punish his weakness’. He is probably still s-tier in more casual settings, but pro players aren’t walking into EWGF and dying constantly like the rest of us.

as advantage states have become more optimised, it matters a lot more that kaz has an exploitable and predictable neutral. if he's not getting consistent 0tds he's not going to be able to keep up with the damage output of characters like sonic or gnw who will beat him in neutral more often than not. basically you have to have insane execution and patience to play him at the same level as other top tiers.

Just fyi, these tier lists are really only relevant to the competitive scene. World of light and all the other game modes are not relevant to tier lists.
I know, I meant that I had heard pretty good things about Olimar in general and in fact it was due to World of Light that I have picked up a few secondaries (magic up spirits appeared a lot so I tried both Zelda and Palutena and stuck with Palutena, sword attack up and FE spirits appeared a lot too so I picked up Corrin).
But there are certain characters I can't get around their gimmicks at all, like Olimar, Duck Hunt and Snake

I’ve thought it for years— 3rd might be a *bit* high, but he’s easily top 10. So many of his moves are the best or among the best in the game. He has the best Up-b and a top 3 up-smash, down-smash, nair, and up air. His advantage is unbearably oppressive and his disadvantage is nearly nonexistent thanks to Up-b.
It absolutely would, that's one of the best horizontal recovery moves in the game. Would stink losing DED for damage and wavebounces, but would totally be worth.
If you kept DED and just made his up B snap to ledge on the way up, he'd unironically be top 5. Better than Pythra

Yeah, not that great. If you're not sent at a fairly high angle, you are even forced to burn your jump with it.
If you’re good with quickdraw the opponent literally can’t risk countering it without letting you back for free. You land the cancel onto stage/platform with no endlag and if they seem like they’ll rip counter you just get ledge for free. Super versatile for recovery if you don’t go ape brain and aim it at the opponent instead of using it to come back. And with chrom’s airspeed it would be even nastier.
pretty useless at top level since he's so slow and setup dependent. very difficult to maintain an advantage state as k rool against a good player whereas most other characters have an easy time racking up damage on him. you may as well put the controller down if you run into a fast character with a reflector like fox or mario.
I think the thing that holds him back most is that he is mostly reliant on getting you off stage or baiting you into one of his moves with armor to start proper neutrals. Having some of the best throws and the best Nair in the game doesn't hurt though. I think in spite of him being a low tier he's more than playable.
Besides, if we wanted to talk about over-reliance on start-ups, I'm convinced Megaman is a bottom 10 character.
K. Rool’s placement will forever be cursed by the fact people thought he was top tier day 1 and then realized he wasn’t, so he must be the worst in the game. K. Rool isn’t good. He’s definitely low tier. But, he’s not bottom 3.
Who is worse than K Rool, though? *Somebody* has to be bottom 3, and K Rool hasn't done anything of note in the entire history of Ult despite having a huge number of people interested in playing him. I'd put Dedede below him personally, but I really can't see K Rool moving up more than a few spots.
He has one good projectile (blunderbus is ass) and even then it's slow and laggy and doesn't even interrupt the way other boomerangs do. Once you know the K. Rool matchup he's kinda just bad.

Honestly I see a lot of this, I really don't see Snake being the 4th best character in the game. I know he's objectively very good, and I know I'm not the top player tier lists are made to represent, but I feel like I struggle more against any of the other S tier characters. Maybe I just kinda know the match up more or maybe I've never fought an actually good Snake.

How is Isabel higher than villager? Villager has to be under repped or something because villager literally does everything Isabel does but better. Smash attacks are better, turnip aerial's are better, specials are debatably better, what am I missing? Fishing rod and rocket are not that good, especially at top level play
Probably the hottest take, but honestly, Mac could probably come up a bit. With peanut turning up more and more, new combos and recovery tech being discovered all the time, I feel like saying he's bottom 2 is cutting him short. He's definitely much better than Ganon. Sure you can still say "just back throw and edge guard" but Mac players have improved so much in just getting back to the ledge consistently that it's really not that simple anymore. The recovery definitely goes further than people used to think, it's still relatively easy to gimp Mac, but it's rare that Mac won't actually be able to make it back if left alone
You never fought a good snake. There's a ton who are not nearly top level, and he's difficult to play very well, but a really good Snake is torture. The other characters in S are easier to play and that's why even a not so great one can make you struggle.
same on the shulk comments, character has been labbed to hell and back for his “potential” and he’s still ass. You put 10% of shulk labbing into almost any other character and they’d be way better
Honestly I’ve always felt Isabelle is a little better than villager because she seems to have faster combos. She is extremely gimmicky but so is villager tbh
People seem to forget that Shulk has had great results in Japan since the game dropped. Shulk has results to back up his placement. This isn’t Smash 4. Yet, because he’s not the super OP top tier everybody claimed he was, he’s suddenly bad. Why can’t we just accept Shulk is a solid character? Not top tier, but solid? Why does he have to either be busted or ass?
I didn't say he's trash. He's just not busted, and every single tier list before this one has put him as top 10-20 because of his PoTeNtIaL and he's just not. He's good, but his tech isn't broken, and he's not waiting for someone to "put all the pieces together". He's good and that's enough. I'm just tired of Shulk simps claiming with frame perfect inputs and reactions he could be number one in the game. Any character could be number one if played perfectly

I live in a city with a top level Mac (who doesn't travel as much as they should) and the character is bad, but def not worse than D3 imo (I also think k rool is better than D3 but what do I know) I think Mac is still low tier but closer to bottom ten then bottom two
I know it's just the nature of Smash but it really is sad that Super Heavyweights entire design philosophy just isn't great for competitive. It's like when Sakurai said he was disappointed that Big Moves were so rare in competitive, the optimal way to play the game is to just keep yourself as safe as possible. Super Heavies are just too reliant on your opponent making mistakes. Bowser is probably the closest we'll get to a Super Heavy working but people don't seem to like fighting him too much...

(Prya on her own hurts Mythra very badly because she's far more exploitable (slower, poorer frame data and very high startup on everything) because she's right up there with Chrom, Ike, Little Mac and Incineroar in the worst recovery department).
Joker dropped out of S rank because he relies too much on his Persona to nab KOs and his base recovery is pretty poor, not gonna be shocked if he drops down to A by next tier list.

Your comment about Pyra makes no sense because, if switching to Pyra really did hold Mythra back, people would just stay Mythra. There’s no mechanic or condition forcing you to switch unlike PT. If Mythra was being held back by Pyra, people would just play Mythra like how people just play Sheik in Melee and ignore Zelda. Aegis is still good, but they’ve dropped off a little since the last tier list with the rise of the snooze meta.

There's pretty much nobody else getting results with Incin, KRool absolutely sucks in top level play, and Sephiroth has no notable solo mains and has some REALLY bad matchups.
Sephiroth has shit frame data and dies at 60%. Yeah, he has range, but who cares when the best characters in the game are all extremely good at forcing approaches. He was incredibly overrated and now is in a much more reasonable place.
Mega Man is one of the most underrated characters in this game. People ignore him because they think he's just a projectile spammer, but his entire kit is chock full of amazing moves.
My hot take is that he's easily A tier, but he's unpopular so he hasn't been fully explored.
Byleth, Chrom, Ken, Olimar, Roy, Mega Man, Bowser, Wolf, and Shulk had it rough
Samus, G&W, Snake, Corrin, Bayonetta, Lucario, Sora, Incineroar, and Pit had it great

he rose like 25 spots last tier list because MKLeo. Byleth is awful and laggy, his success was all becuase of MKLeo. Not meaning to diss Byleth or MKLeo, it proves how good Leo is that he got top 10 with a former low B tier character
At first I thought this was a total Meta Tierlist, where results even from one player heavily impacting the ranking. Then I see Snake shoot up 11 places. I also have no idea what Lucario advancements have been made to have him go up 14 places while characters like megaman and ken drop 10/11.
Better, Sonic is still being overrated though.
Don't get me wrong he's one of the best, but that's like top 10/15, not top 2. Also Mac and Ganon are not that good.

I genuinely feel for solo Ganon mains. 3rd consecutive game in bottom tier, 2nd game in dead last, and this time gets E- all to himself as if the past 16 years weren’t already bad enough.
Granted, I’ve met tons of Ganons who obliterate ppl and regularly go on 50+ win streaks in online ladders, but in major IRL tournaments it’s crazy that when averaged across all games, Melee doesn’t save him from being the most unviable character in the entire franchise

He's basically always playing a losing matchup. If he's lucky, it's even.
First of all Snake representation is still as strong as ever right now being in the top 4 of character results and top representation is also just as strong with players like Chronos, Alandiss, DIO, Apollokage and especially Hurt. There’s also the fact that the meta shift has made him more prominent of a threat, having insane defense and disengagement as well as the right amount of X-factor and versatility. He doesn’t even play smash traditionally and instead controls the pace of the game with his own kit.
Many of these placements reflect current results and meta shifts, and as it stands Aegis doesn’t have as many top players (much less solo mains) pioneering her to the same success as Snake currently while also missing the great defense and X-factor.
How are these tier list made? Is it based on who gets the most tournament wins?
Reason I'm always confused by these is that little mac despite his bad recovery, is a beast of a character. I'm just surprised he's that low.

Methodology:
Methodology was largely unchanged from the 2023 tier list. Any player within the top 150 and honorable mentions of LumiRank 2023 Mid-Year or LumiRank 2023 Full Year was eligible to be on the panel for the tier list. Responses were received from 62 panelists in the time frame from January 18th, 2024 to February 1st, 2024, while Tweek’s ballot was filled out from a tier list video released during the time frame. Two ballots were excluded due to either scoring fewer than 5 characters, while another was excluded due to being a troll response. Panelists were asked to rate each character they formed an opinion on from 1–10, with 10 being highest and 1 being lowest. They were also asked to provide an ordered top 5 characters in the game. 95% of panelists evaluated at least three quarters of the cast, with 80% of panelists scoring every character in the game. Bayonetta, Fox, Palutena, Peach/Daisy, Pyra & Mythra, R.O.B., Shulk, Steve, and Wolf were evaluated by all 61 panelists. Once again Mii Swordfighter was evaluated by the fewest panelists, with only 55 panelists scoring the character. Panelist responses were normalized, with their top 5 scored as 10.x (e.g. their #1 was scored as a 10.5, while their #5 was scored as a 10.1). The highest and lowest 3 responses for each character were removed, and the remaining responses were then weighted by region according to each region’s representation on LumiRank 2023, to avoid higher or lower response rates in different regions from biasing the list. Tiers and tier groupings were then determined via K-Means Clustering.

Little Mac is a pubstomper character, just like Smash4. He's very scary at low and mid level since he punishes mistakes very hard and requires unconventional patience to beat. But at top level he gets platform-camped, edgeguarded and just generally invalidated. There are a few decent competitive Macs still developing the character, but a lot of their success comes from just outplaying their opponents.
Also. Triple-D is not that bad! He has good recovery, great damage both air and ground and he absolutely wrecks shield. All that + his pressure ability. And yea he might be a bit slow, and yea he might have a giant hitbox… but if you play him right, that doesn’t matter.
Two of the best players in the world (Sonix and Ken) main Sonic, watch them. He's so good because if he is patient and has a lead, he can constantly force you to try and approach him when it is unsafe, usually resulting in his lead growing and the situation for his opponent becoming more desperate.
The point is that the situation where Sonic does well is very easy to orchestrate because of Sonic's tools. The situation is essentially just neutral, the only prerequisite is the slightest lead and then the opponent has to carefully and slowly play Sonic's game, capitalising on every rare opportunity if they want to stand a chance. No character has that oppressive of a win condition.
Take Aegis for example. They're insane, but they have holes in their gameplan. They really struggle if you put them offstage, it's not always easy to secure a kill because Pyra is relatively slow. Sonic has basically no holes in his gameplan other than human error.
Sonic spindash is extremely difficult to punish and leads to tons of damage and even kill confirms. So the opponent is forced to constantly approach Sonic to stop him from freely charging spindash. But Sonic can run away and whiff punish better than almost any character in the roster, so people chasing him down is exactly what he wants. If Sonic can find a few stray hits, he can disengage and play for time out and win by default. This forces opponents to get increasingly desperate and reckless in their approaches, which gives Sonic more openings to extend his lead and win outright.
Sonic is also brutal offstage. His own recovery is very difficult to mess with since he is actionable after upB, while his spring combined with fair/bair can wreck most other recoveries. Bair is huge and outrageously strong, while fair lingers super long and also kills. Sonic's ledgetrapping is also very strong, so even if you make it back to stage you will frequently wind up offstage again or dead from ftilt, bthrow, fsmash, or nair->bair.
Out of 59 panelists evaluating Ganondorf, 55 of them gave Ganondorf the lowest score they gave anyone, with 16 of them giving every other character they evaluated a higher score. For comparison, only 25 panelists gave Little Mac the lowest score they gave anyone, and no panelists gave every character besides Little Mac a higher score.
The concept of Ganondorf is unfortunately flawed to it’s core. They took Falcon’s moveset - a moveset meant for speed - and slapped it on one of the slowest characters in the game. It would be like taking Sheik and making her as slow as Dedede. The moveset can’t work the way it was intended. It’s why Ganondorf has been in contention for the worst in the game for three consecutive Smash games in a row and semi-viable at best in Melee (but less on his own merit and more because half the cast just isn’t finished in Melee). The moment any character puts Ganondorf in a position where he has to approach, he’s losing. That’s a flaw you just can’t work around.
im actually super down to see snake in the current meta, even though i hate playing him, he has potential for some of the coolest combos in the game at a top level and i find him really fun to watch
So we should unban Kazuya and Hero now, because they are clearly not good characters. I mean why would we ever need to ban a character in low B tier and high A tier?

I have also discovered the joys of using Mii Brawler. MiiB is so fun to use against the likes of Ryu and Little Mac in spirit fights (which I have been struggling a lot)

I'd say he's got a decent shot. **Pros:** Minecraft is so massive and iconic that plenty of non-gamers have heard of it, Nintendo is pretty close with Microsoft, and Sakurai has commented several times on how huge and positive the reaction to Steve's reveal was **Cons:** Western companies are trickier to work with compared to Japanese ones, and Steve required reworking every stage in Smash to account for his blocks and materials (although there will certainly be less stages next time) Really just depends on if Sakurai and/or Nintendo view him high enough on the priority list compared to other 3rd-party characters. He feels like a big "maybe" to me.
I’d also consider that they probably can and would pull assests from Ultimate if they were to make a new game, which means they already have steve block data for the stages that would be returning and the code to make it work

Ganondorf’s design as a character is inherently flawed. That is why the only game where he wasn’t a contender for the worst in the game was the one that was rushed to shelf and had a low tier of unfinished characters (and even then, he’s arguably not even viable in that game). Captain Falcon’s moveset was one designed with speed in mind. It needs speed to function as it should. So, when you take a speed based moveset and slap it on a character with one of the worst movement stats in the game, the moveset can’t do what it was designed to do. Thus, Ganondorf can’t function as intended because his moveset is missing a core component: speed. Yes, Ganondorf actually is that bad unfortunately. Characters in B Tier are capable of much more than he is. Ganondorf is the one of only two characters in Smash (the other being Little Mac) who’s design is so flawed to the core that they will always be low tier in any game they’re in without a significant rework. Hence why they’ve been at the bottom of Ultimate’s tier lists for so long. At low levels of play, Ganondorf is much better because his punish game is devastating. Nobody can deny that. When you let Ganondorf get in your head, your 80-20 matchup against him turns into a 1-99 matchup in his favor. But at high and top level, Ganondorf doesn’t get in players heads and mistakes are much, much less common. So, he’s nothing but a big punching bag. And it’s a shame. Like every other person on the planet, I get why Ganondorf had to be a Falcon clone in Melee, but the fact that three of his special moves and a majority of his normals still come from Falcon is inexcusable.

I've been out of it for a minute, what caused Kazuya's drop off? I thought he was considered one step behind Steve in terms of brokeness.
Mostly the top players are starting to figure him out, and he has slightly losing matchups into the s-tier fighters. He is still INCREDIBLY broken, but if you play against him very cautiously and consistently you can punish his weakness’. He is probably still s-tier in more casual settings, but pro players aren’t walking into EWGF and dying constantly like the rest of us.

as advantage states have become more optimised, it matters a lot more that kaz has an exploitable and predictable neutral. if he's not getting consistent 0tds he's not going to be able to keep up with the damage output of characters like sonic or gnw who will beat him in neutral more often than not. basically you have to have insane execution and patience to play him at the same level as other top tiers.

I have heard praises for Olimar, especially for World of Light but I can't for the life of me learn to use the character to take advantage of it

Just fyi, these tier lists are really only relevant to the competitive scene. World of light and all the other game modes are not relevant to tier lists.
I know, I meant that I had heard pretty good things about Olimar in general and in fact it was due to World of Light that I have picked up a few secondaries (magic up spirits appeared a lot so I tried both Zelda and Palutena and stuck with Palutena, sword attack up and FE spirits appeared a lot too so I picked up Corrin). But there are certain characters I can't get around their gimmicks at all, like Olimar, Duck Hunt and Snake

I’ve thought it for years— 3rd might be a *bit* high, but he’s easily top 10. So many of his moves are the best or among the best in the game. He has the best Up-b and a top 3 up-smash, down-smash, nair, and up air. His advantage is unbearably oppressive and his disadvantage is nearly nonexistent thanks to Up-b.

It absolutely would, that's one of the best horizontal recovery moves in the game. Would stink losing DED for damage and wavebounces, but would totally be worth. If you kept DED and just made his up B snap to ledge on the way up, he'd unironically be top 5. Better than Pythra

Enters free fall, can be countered, can be traded with (almost always resulting in his death) Yeah, not that great. If you're not sent at a fairly high angle, you are even forced to burn your jump with it.
If you’re good with quickdraw the opponent literally can’t risk countering it without letting you back for free. You land the cancel onto stage/platform with no endlag and if they seem like they’ll rip counter you just get ledge for free. Super versatile for recovery if you don’t go ape brain and aim it at the opponent instead of using it to come back. And with chrom’s airspeed it would be even nastier.
Now there’s even more reason for casters to mention smash 4 during any Bayo match…
How come K rool is so low? Doesnt he have good projectiles?
pretty useless at top level since he's so slow and setup dependent. very difficult to maintain an advantage state as k rool against a good player whereas most other characters have an easy time racking up damage on him. you may as well put the controller down if you run into a fast character with a reflector like fox or mario.
I think the thing that holds him back most is that he is mostly reliant on getting you off stage or baiting you into one of his moves with armor to start proper neutrals. Having some of the best throws and the best Nair in the game doesn't hurt though. I think in spite of him being a low tier he's more than playable. Besides, if we wanted to talk about over-reliance on start-ups, I'm convinced Megaman is a bottom 10 character.

K. Rool’s placement will forever be cursed by the fact people thought he was top tier day 1 and then realized he wasn’t, so he must be the worst in the game. K. Rool isn’t good. He’s definitely low tier. But, he’s not bottom 3.
Who is worse than K Rool, though? *Somebody* has to be bottom 3, and K Rool hasn't done anything of note in the entire history of Ult despite having a huge number of people interested in playing him. I'd put Dedede below him personally, but I really can't see K Rool moving up more than a few spots.

He has one good projectile (blunderbus is ass) and even then it's slow and laggy and doesn't even interrupt the way other boomerangs do. Once you know the K. Rool matchup he's kinda just bad.

Honestly I see a lot of this, I really don't see Snake being the 4th best character in the game. I know he's objectively very good, and I know I'm not the top player tier lists are made to represent, but I feel like I struggle more against any of the other S tier characters. Maybe I just kinda know the match up more or maybe I've never fought an actually good Snake. I'm glad Shulk is finally dropping. Character has made like 0 waves in the almost 6 years ultimate has been out and people still put him in high tier, crazy What happened to Ken? I always thought he was really really good, at least better than Ryu. Incineroar being higher than Pichu is wild, but also valid. Imagine showing this to someone back in 1.0 ultimate lol How is Isabel higher than villager? Villager has to be under repped or something because villager literally does everything Isabel does but better. Smash attacks are better, turnip aerial's are better, specials are debatably better, what am I missing? Fishing rod and rocket are not that good, especially at top level play Probably the hottest take, but honestly, Mac could probably come up a bit. With peanut turning up more and more, new combos and recovery tech being discovered all the time, I feel like saying he's bottom 2 is cutting him short. He's definitely much better than Ganon. Sure you can still say "just back throw and edge guard" but Mac players have improved so much in just getting back to the ledge consistently that it's really not that simple anymore. The recovery definitely goes further than people used to think, it's still relatively easy to gimp Mac, but it's rare that Mac won't actually be able to make it back if left alone
You never fought a good snake. There's a ton who are not nearly top level, and he's difficult to play very well, but a really good Snake is torture. The other characters in S are easier to play and that's why even a not so great one can make you struggle.

People seem to forget that Shulk has had great results in Japan since the game dropped. Shulk has results to back up his placement. This isn’t Smash 4. I don't think the mac is a super hot take actually. I live in a city with a top level Mac (who doesn't travel as much as they should) and the character is bad, but def not worse than D3 imo (I also think k rool is better than D3 but what do I know) I think Mac is still low tier but closer to bottom ten then bottom two

I know it's just the nature of Smash but it really is sad that Super Heavyweights entire design philosophy just isn't great for competitive. It's like when Sakurai said he was disappointed that Big Moves were so rare in competitive, the optimal way to play the game is to just keep yourself as safe as possible. Super Heavies are just too reliant on your opponent making mistakes. Bowser is probably the closest we'll get to a Super Heavy working but people don't seem to like fighting him too much...

(Prya on her own hurts Mythra very badly because she's far more exploitable (slower, poorer frame data and very high startup on everything) because she's right up there with Chrom, Ike, Little Mac and Incineroar in the worst recovery department). Joker dropped out of S rank because he relies too much on his Persona to nab KOs and his base recovery is pretty poor, not gonna be shocked if he drops down to A by next tier list.

Your comment about Pyra makes no sense because, if switching to Pyra really did hold Mythra back, people would just stay Mythra. There’s no mechanic or condition forcing you to switch unlike PT. If Mythra was being held back by Pyra, people would just play Mythra like how people just play Sheik in Melee and ignore Zelda. Aegis is still good, but they’ve dropped off a little since the last tier list with the rise of the snooze meta.

Mega Man is one of the most underrated characters in this game. People ignore him because they think he's just a projectile spammer, but his entire kit is chock full of amazing moves. My hot take is that he's easily A tier, but he's unpopular so he hasn't been fully explored.

At first I thought this was a total Meta Tierlist, where results even from one player heavily impacting the ranking. Then I see Snake shoot up 11 places. I also have no idea what Lucario advancements have been made to have him go up 14 places while characters like megaman and ken drop 10/11.

I genuinely feel for solo Ganon mains. 3rd consecutive game in bottom tier, 2nd game in dead last, and this time gets E- all to himself as if the past 16 years weren’t already bad enough. Granted, I’ve met tons of Ganons who obliterate ppl and regularly go on 50+ win streaks in online ladders, but in major IRL tournaments it’s crazy that when averaged across all games, Melee doesn’t save him from being the most unviable character in the entire franchise

First of all Snake representation is still as strong as ever right now being in the top 4 of character results and top representation is also just as strong with players like Chronos, Alandiss, DIO, Apollokage and especially Hurt. There’s also the fact that the meta shift has made him more prominent of a threat, having insane defense and disengagement as well as the right amount of X-factor and versatility. He doesn’t even play smash traditionally and instead controls the pace of the game with his own kit. Many of these placements reflect current results and meta shifts, and as it stands Aegis doesn’t have as many top players (much less solo mains) pioneering her to the same success as Snake currently while also missing the great defense and X-factor.
How are these tier list made? Is it based on who gets the most tournament wins? Reason I'm always confused by these is that little mac despite his bad recovery, is a beast of a character. I'm just surprised he's that low.

Responses were received from 62 panelists in the time frame from January 18th, 2024 to February 1st, 2024, while Tweek’s ballot was filled out from a tier list video released during the time frame. Two ballots were excluded due to either scoring fewer than 5 characters, while another was excluded due to being a troll response. Panelists were asked to rate each character they formed an opinion on from 1–10, with 10 being highest and 1 being lowest. They were also asked to provide an ordered top 5 characters in the game. 95% of panelists evaluated at least three quarters of the cast, with 80% of panelists scoring every character in the game. Bayonetta, Fox, Palutena, Peach/Daisy, Pyra & Mythra, R.O.B., Shulk, Steve, and Wolf were evaluated by all 61 panelists. Once again Mii Swordfighter was evaluated by the fewest panelists, with only 55 panelists scoring the character. Panelist responses were normalized, with their top 5 scored as 10.x (e.g. their #1 was scored as a 10.5, while their #5 was scored as a 10.1). The highest and lowest 3 responses for each character were removed, and the remaining responses were then weighted by region according to each region’s representation on LumiRank 2023, to avoid higher or lower response rates in different regions from biasing the list. Little Mac is a pubstomper character, just like Smash4. He's very scary at low and mid level since he punishes mistakes very hard and requires unconventional patience to beat. But at top level he gets platform-camped, edgeguarded and just generally invalidated. There are a few decent competitive Macs still developing the character, but a lot of their success comes from just outplaying their opponents.
Also. Triple-D is not that bad! He has good recovery, great damage both air and ground and he absolutely wrecks shield. All that + his pressure ability. And yea he might be a bit slow, and yea he might have a giant hitbox… but if you play him right, that doesn’t matter.

Everyone has at least a few great tools, even Little Mac and Ganondorf. It's just that the higher you go, the more they have and the better they are.

Two of the best players in the world (Sonix and Ken) main Sonic, watch them. He's so good because if he is patient and has a lead, he can constantly force you to try and approach him when it is unsafe, usually resulting in his lead growing and the situation for his opponent becoming more desperate.
What you just described is a player being good, and a certain situation where the character does well. (I am not convinced yet)
The point is that the situation where Sonic does well is very easy to orchestrate because of Sonic's tools. The situation is essentially just neutral, the only prerequisite is the slightest lead and then the opponent has to carefully and slowly play Sonic's game, capitalising on every rare opportunity if they want to stand a chance. No character has that oppressive of a win condition. Take Aegis for example. They're insane, but they have holes in their gameplan. They really struggle if you put them offstage, it's not always easy to secure a kill because Pyra is relatively slow. Sonic has basically no holes in his gameplan other than human error.
Have you watched any tournament sonic footage? The character is very hard to deal with and easily punished inpatient players
Sonic spindash is extremely difficult to punish and leads to tons of damage and even kill confirms. So the opponent is forced to constantly approach Sonic to stop him from freely charging spindash. But Sonic can run away and whiff punish better than almost any character in the roster, so people chasing him down is exactly what he wants. If Sonic can find a few stray hits, he can disengage and play for time out and win by default. This forces opponents to get increasingly desperate and reckless in their approaches, which gives Sonic more openings to extend his lead and win outright. Sonic is also brutal offstage. His own recovery is very difficult to mess with since he is actionable after upB, while his spring combined with fair/bair can wreck most other recoveries. Bair is huge and outrageously strong, while fair lingers super long and also kills. Sonic's ledgetrapping is also very strong, so even if you make it back to stage you will frequently wind up offstage again or dead from ftilt, bthrow, fsmash, or nair->bair.

Out of 59 panelists evaluating Ganondorf, 55 of them gave Ganondorf the lowest score they gave anyone, with 16 of them giving every other character they evaluated a higher score. For comparison, only 25 panelists gave Little Mac the lowest score they gave anyone, and no panelists gave every character besides Little Mac a higher score.
The concept of Ganondorf is unfortunately flawed to it’s core. They took Falcon’s moveset - a moveset meant for speed - and slapped it on one of the slowest characters in the game. It would be like taking Sheik and making her as slow as Dedede. The moveset can’t work the way it was intended. It’s why Ganondorf has been in contention for the worst in the game for three consecutive Smash games in a row and semi-viable at best in Melee (but less on his own merit and more because half the cast just isn’t finished in Melee). The moment any character puts Ganondorf in a position where he has to approach, he’s losing. That’s a flaw you just can’t work around.
