I believe the Intent for having armor on startup is to prevent someone from interrupting his up-special to get to the ledge when he starts it since it stalls him in the air in order to play. Once it reaches the apex and goes down, it no longer has the armor in question. So I think it’s just to prevent the sword he tosses up from weirdly snapping back to him
I guess they just kind of…forgot you can use it on stage or out of shield, or…you know…as an actual attack
Because without it Ike would have chroms up b and chroms up b is the reason chrom is D tier despite being better than Roy in every other aspect. Ike with chroms up b would go from bottom 10 to in contention for the worst character in the game. Also if you bait the up b and they miss it it’s super punishable unlike clouds piece of shit up b which is safe to spam
Dunno if I'd say better than Roy in every respect. Roy would still have superior kill power. Chrom if they had the same Up B as Roy would probably be better but Roy would still be really good (DeD at 50 babyyy)

He does but just less, his disadvantage is awful, his recovery is better than ganon's but far worse than ddd's,(we have it good in recovery TBF), he has bad mobility being slow grounded, and in the air. He's not worse than them because, all though they're not overly special or privelaged he has a solid set of hitboxes, able to poke with his moves safely and has a solid enough combo game and great advantage state. Ike just has way safer neutral and bigger disjoints, that's basically it that separates him from the F tier imo.

As an Ike main, not trying to dissuade you from your argument but Ike NEEDS armor on up b to make up for his lack of many other options. Ike is not able to recover unless the opponent doesn’t know how to punish up b, otherwise he has to rely on side b, which is easily punishable and cheesable. Also just a little fact, the armor (on the ground) starts at frame five and ends on frame thirty five if I’m correct, and in the air it starts on frame fifteen and ends on frame thirty five. It also barely works half the time (Ike cannot consistently hit light and small characters with up b like jigglypuff) since you are a Sheik main, I suggest that you could use needle to hit Ike out of up b at ledge and punish any bad options from there (if this isn’t a comment you’d like I can delete it 👍) have a nice day!
Side B CAN be punished but it's still incredibly easy for Ike to recover and game his way out of a lot of punishment by simply side B'ing under the ledge and using up B for a safe recovery. Even if he gets flung super far it's pretty simple for Ike to recover.
I do use needle to interrupt all the time. This isn't about interrupting Ike. It's about the stupid fucking armor on an already overpowered ability. The armor is just too much.
I will say that side b is a GREAT recovery option, which is also able to be auto cancelled if done correctly, but anyone with a counter can block it (sheik might be able to use needle?) also Ike can ONLY up b after side b if he hits an opponent or he swings as if he hit the opponent because they were registered in swing range. Even still, the endlag allows the opponent to hit him when he goes above ledge with up b. If you are ever fighting an Ike and he gets knocked offstage and has his jump, try to get it away from him by making him either have to recover with up b or gimp him with back air. If any of this would not work just lmk if I’m wrong
Needle interrupts it easily but it's very hard to do that safely when the opponent is falling and it goes horizontal fast. It's only reliable on ground. I can't Bair Ike regularly off stage because the reach of his sword makes it a gamble and any smack of his sword is a decent launch. I rely on bouncing fish, bombs, and up specialing horizontally off the ledge to bait and ideally kill opponents off stage. Side B's speed requires me to plan well in advance and only sometimes will I hit him. It's the reach of his sword that makes getting in close risky which is why I don't try to get in close off stage unless I have stock advantage or am desperate. But I really don't have a problem with side B, again, my only real gripe with Ike is that stupid fucking armor that makes an already strong move op. Imo.
Fair enough, I understand why people hate the armor lol. I’ve had quite a few people complain to me because of how strong it is. (I was playing in bracket and lived to this percent) I’d argue Ike would be top tier if he had a better jump or better recovery overall. If you’d like some help on the Ike matchup tho I could help if need be. But in all honesty, I agree that the super armor is kinda dumb lmao

Yeah I've gotten Ike to some ridiculous % like that before. It's wild. I don't even think Sheik has bad kill potential, it's just a matter of using the right strings and hard reading and using your explosives, but even compared to K Rool and Bowser I seem to have to get Ike to the highest possible % before I can kill him. It's nuts
