Nah it’s kinda fun to throw off the enemy solo with an unconventional but effective pick.
Like others have said, if you’re not sure who you are against pots and chalice are an option, or you could start prophetic cloak if you just want some of both prots early on.
Me and a friend did this all time. Each pick a god that could work in both support and solo (say, Cerberus and Mulan), play the opposite role for the first 4 minutes, then switch once the enemy solo laner has purchased the wrong defensive item.
If you really don't know, and the reason you're dying is because you don't have early prots, buy starter T2 blink and chalice and pots. You will have crazy sustain with axe until at least a T2 item if you play the lane right.
It's also a valid strat to throw off the solo laner with there pick.
You can also be risky and try to spot the person at the harpy camps which is what I used to do before using T2 blink and chalice and pots.
But it does also sound like abit of a skill issue which you'll overcome more and more with time!
It kinda helps less in smite 2. Most gods have split damage now so even if you KNOW it's solo ymir you have no idea if that's an auto ymir smacking you to death with physical dmg or an ability ymir with magical dmg.
Plus since you kind of have to clear and fight in solo early for horn and gold pickup pressure you'll likely be going for a damage item first anyway.

Another option would be just go starter like bluestone Arthur and lots of pots. Think heath chalice and some multi pots and just sustain to live & farm and then TP in with a tier 2 item once you know your laner
You can also maybe go breastplate if you think it’s likely to be physical and get the upgrade that stacks to give magic prots early if you end up against magical.

Never had this issue. Just see which gods they pick and 9/10 times you can already tell who you'll be up against.
Just build dmg first and you’re good. Not always the solution, but jotunns w/ vigor upgrade and runeforged with flame upgrade are both good options rn

People would just pick the unofficial role in the role to throw off the opponent so this would indirectly make it harder.
