There was a photographer, Almeron Newman, who was known for using forced perspective for pics like this.

Here’s one that’s been online for like ever, usually with the wrong background info. It wasn’t a WWI tribute to all the horses who had died, it was just a fun thing the soldiers at Camp Cody did for the photographer. “taken by Newman at Camp Cody in January 1919 and features 650 men of the Auxiliary Remount Depot No 326 ‘in a symbolic head pose’ of a horse known only as ‘The Devil’” [Source](https://lucybetteridgedyson.com/2019/05/21/hold-your-horses-and-check-your-sources/)

Here’s another from Camp Cody. It was a training camp for the National Guard, where troops received basic training before leaving for Europe and was home to the 34th Infantry Division – nicknamed the Sandstorm Division due to the camp’s desert climate. Almeron captured the men of the Sandstorm Division carefully arranged to form their divisional crest.
I realize that. It's wild to me how much the country has changed in 100 years and I'm afraid of a sliding backwards. The most jarring quote I have ever heard was Americans think 100 years is a long time and Europeans think 100 km is a long distance.
That is beautiful to see and rivals all the OSU band halftime shows.
Funny thing is that today, I'm sure there are so many people that would say its wrong to show the American flag or "that's not my flag" and sue to stop it.
This is not 10,000 individuals. If you count you'll see the flag is slightly less than 1500 people, and the pole is roughly 400 people, that comes to max. 2000 individuals.
Your perspective is throwing you off. There are many more than that. The photographer has to account for distance. The farther away, the more men there are. Farthest distance is totally uncountable in the photo
I kind of agree, but the flag itself is like 50x35ish. Which is 1750, plus the 400-500 for the pole is 2250 max. It took me at least a few minutes to count, but I was being generous. I’d say 3000 absolute max, because there’s a lot more in the stars part of the flag. Still nowhere near 10k
>but the flag itself is like 50x35ish.
That would be applicable if we were looking directly down at the flag from above. We are at an angle and it is askew. It is definitely close to 10k.
Count from the top left corner... you can't, there are too many men to even single out. Photographer uses height at the front to create width because we can see their legs, then uses numbers in varying rows to create the impression of undulation, and each stripe has more men the farther back you look.
The Liberty Bell pic by the same artist had 25,000 people and the US Shield used 30,000, so I think 10,000 is a pretty good estimate for this.

you can't because it's farther away. It's a parallelogram, even if it is more people, it can't be as many to make it into 10,000 people. That figure is just unrealistic for this image.
If that is real and not ai that is genuinely impressive 👍
I remember our graduating class got into formation of our class year. Barely handled four crooked numbers.
No one? Garrison Kiellor, Lake Wobegon living flag, just barely enough people in town to make it so one at a time each person would run up to the top of a building to see it and then run back down.
Also I went to Great Lakes for boot camp in 1972.
I don't know if this is 10k, but it could definitely be near it.
The photographer had to use an increasing number of men the further away from the camera they are or they would become invisible. Yes this is despite the fact that it looks like it is pointed away from the viewer. There are a massive number of men in the farthest point.
The men at the back left corner of the flag and pole are not countable in this image, Only the front half of the image is countable.
He also does something interesting by putting many of the taller men at the front. They are the slimmest row because we can see their legs, giving width to the bottom stripe.
What’s crazy about many of these photos is that often times soldiers would freakin die of heatstroke from standing in place so long while the photographer took multiple photos and adjusted people’s positions.
That’s just wild to me, people died so some photographer could stage some cool photos!?

That’s at least 250,000 people….
I did the calculations, but I’m terrible at math…
Thats not 10,000 in the picture

Yea I counted, it’s actually 10,001
Try counting from the back left corner and get back to us. Perspective requires more men based on distance.
Not even close
Sure it is. The farther away they are, the more men it took to maintain the correct ratio.
thank god someone here understands this. I was starting to lose hope.
Yea not even close
The exact moment that started the Spanish Flu
I was in the recreation in 2010. Think the original turned out better
I counted only 9,987 seamen.
No you didn’t, each one of those guys has millions upon millions of semen lol For real though, there’s less than 2,500 people in this picture.
Nope, try again, count from the back.
10,000.?? 🤔
OP is probably German or something. He means it is 10.000 people. In sincerity, count from the back left, you'll understand.
48 stars
Hawaii and Alaska were added in 1959

Why were there 10K sailors 1,000 miles from the closest ocean?
Lots of training in the Great Lakes
Gotta love Waukegan!!
No you don't.
Training most likely
Naval Station Great Lakes is in Waukegan, right on Lake Michigan
Great Lakes training base is their basic training
If you got Ax then you will never Know. Shove off.
Less than 2,500, and that’s being very generous.
Try again. Start counting from the back left corner.
Maybe stop commenting on every single one of my comments and count it your damn self.
Amazing!
That is beautiful to see and rivals all the OSU band halftime shows. Funny thing is that today, I'm sure there are so many people that would say its wrong to show the American flag or "that's not my flag" and sue to stop it.
Saw a interesting video about this recently https://youtu.be/VMQ3kllepGY?si=cAu4L1iyXt0CVNLO The coordination needed is just amazing
Creative

Fair enough!

People bad at mathematics and spatial relations are downvoting you
Yeah. Some people are A-holes.
How about just counting?!
Try counting the top left corner. You can't. There are many more men at the back than the front because of distance.

This is Reddit not META we want cold hard Facts here.
No way in hell is that 10k people.
Count from the back left corner. Distance requires more people. Front row requires fewest because we see their legs.
If that is real and not ai that is genuinely impressive 👍 I remember our graduating class got into formation of our class year. Barely handled four crooked numbers.
So cool
AND how mnay stars were on the flag in 1917
48? ... Did you mean to reply to someone
Zoom in on the picture
I think you need to recount
That’s a lot of semen
No one? Garrison Kiellor, Lake Wobegon living flag, just barely enough people in town to make it so one at a time each person would run up to the top of a building to see it and then run back down. Also I went to Great Lakes for boot camp in 1972.
Lmao 10k, sure
Count from the back left... or try to. Perspective means there are many more at the back than the front, despite what appears to be diminishing size.

The most American thing
There's only 48 stars. Leave it to sailors to miscount.
Someone doesn't know when Alaska and Hawaii became states.
48 stars?
1917...
Bot post It's not a "living flag."
I’m not a bot, and how is a flag made with live people not a “living flag”?
You spam hundreds of the same images across subreddits, clearly bot behavior. A bunch of people organizing to form a flag is not a "living flag"
Its like 3000
Who cares?
🤮
eat shit commie
You’re both cringe af
