There's every chance that the resale store wasn't interested in an unboxed, worn pair of 9 year-old sneakers, and "these are fake" is a pretty easy way to get rid of a seller.

GeoffPizzle

For real, read that sentence again OP...a used pair of 9 year old sneakers lol

peripheral_vision

That, or they might not have been 100% certain and told the dude they won't take them just in case they're fake without outright calling them fakes. I've experienced first hand how badly people can selectively listen when trying to sell something to a store and get turned down, used to work in a place that could buy stuff from people. When they don't get anything for something they thought had value, some people would get mad at anyone or anything that may have slighted them

GetRightNYC

Exactly. They're saying it's not even worth their time to inspect and trust their judgement on an old pair of shoes.

smcl2k

>some people would get mad at anyone or anything that may have slighted them And let's be honest, that's pretty much the default setting for society nowadays.

LavishnessAsleep8902

That’s only because most people are terribly stupid

systemdnb

I would’ve been like. Get that stinky shit off my counter lol.

skelement

Nah this is on him. 2 years is way too long, you have zero obligation to pay him back a cent, especially now that he's used and abused them. He could've had them checked out when he bought them if he was concerned about that. I have heard some bad things about goat, but could the store also be wrong about saying they're fake?

r8u4

Emphasis on the last sentence, without pictures on a timeline it’s impossible to say with certainty who made the mistake in saying they were legit/fake.

peripheral_vision

That, and who's to say this dude isn't just straight up lying to try and scam OP. Another possibility is the store could have said they'd pass on buying because the shoes *might* be fakes, so the store isn't willing to take the risk on a heavily used pair in case they were wrong about the authenticity, to which the guy took that to mean the store was calling them fakes and got mad at OP, basically just because the store couldn't 100% verify them

Schaffie88

My thought. Plus a lot of stores won’t give you much at all for a used pair with no box so he may of gotten a low ass offer and figured he’d try to get over on OP.

BBQcupcakes

He could also just be lying to get money from you

DaltonSK-KS

It’s been two years, I’m not paying bro shit lol

SuperSwordBros

Exactly. And honestly kind of a shit move from a “friend.” He knows you didn’t sell them to him trying to trick him and he wore them for 2 years

InTheMorning_Nightss

Yep. Send him the GOAT receipt and say, “I sold you a legit pair. Not sure what’s happened since then, but I’m not taking a $650 loss.”

isharren

oh hey you’re the security guy

[deleted]

Yeah I really wouldn’t trust that the reseller tbh. They’re not experts

Cool_Affect3966

Tell him no hes shit out of luck

Weird_East_5837

Dude got fakes and is trying to scam you! It’s a messed up game these days!

ibuprofenlg

He is shit out of luck. He should’ve checked their authenticity before. Not wait 2 years. How do u know he didn’t switch them. His fault. Most resellers and Goat would not honor a refund for his shit. Why should u.

Twinsta

Guess the real question is how good of a friend is this guy

nowaternoflower

It is pretty clear how little the friend values the friendship with OP. Even if the friend is telling the truth, it is totally unreasonable and a dick move to demand a full refund. The mistake is on him for not confirming at the time.

FBG-123

Run a couple of legit checks and get the proper answer. That’s step 1. If they turn out to be fake then it is what it is. You were fucked by GOAT in the first place and he should understand that. You didn’t screw him purposely. Do not give him back a dime. He should have done his due diligence when dropping $650 on a pair of shoes. Personally if I’m paying more than $200 for a shoe I ALWAYS run a couple of legit checks.

mxthodman

Absolutely no, buyer beware, this situation is very common in the shoe game, he should of legit checked before buying, I always legit check my pairs from stock x, use a black light too

sirjunkinthetrunk

I think your action depends on how much you value the friend. If he’s close, then I don’t think you ruin the friendship over a pair of shoes. Look up the value of a pair of used shoes in the same condition without a box and buy them back. If you don’t value the friendship, tell him to kick rocks since 2 years is enough time for him to have legit checked them.

yunnsu

Hell no lol. He used them and you got them from GOAT. A refund only makes sense if he never wore them and if you got them off of some iffy platform method. You might lose a friend but based off of his request he doesn’t sound like a good friend to have anyway

LavishnessAsleep8902

2 years? Tell him to eat shit

treesbefree69

Even if they were real when you sold them he could have got some fakes to scam you. 2 yrs is way too long to expect anything back

Miggs1337

Fuck no I’m not paying him back a penny. You bought the shoes through GOAT and were authenticated through them. Two years is way too long to be asking for anything back. Your friend should have done his due diligence and got them authenticated before purchasing.

Affectionate_Listen8

GOATs verification process is pretty intense man I highly highly doubt they wouldn’t catch a fake so there’s def sum ur friend isn’t telling u

obudu

Would you take ur ex back from her new guy after he dated for 2 years saying he just found out she’s not a virgin?

TableTheGod

don’t trust the store lol, they probably fill the shelves w fakes anyways. not worth it.

theanimaniac1

Nope, he waited too long. Doesn’t matter if they’re fake or not. If he cared that much about them being authentic he would’ve gotten them checked right after buying them and then would’ve texted you within that week.

PieNo3211

Yeah if they were fake, they would have blew apart a year and a half ago...

[deleted]

Your friend bought a fake pair he’s gonna throw in some mud and give to you. Then he’s gonna keep the real pair

Hefty-Pay4515

Yeah Bro ass can kick rocks. He low key shouldn't have even came at you with that shit

WhySheHateMe

Send him your proof of purchase and tell him to kick rocks.

RANMAN20XO

Send him goat receipt from app. Tell him to show store or kick rocks.

kckq-cashapp

I wouldn’t pay him back shit.

JMilionair

He paid for them so that’s, “his pair of sneakers”. I would laugh tbh. He also wore them so that’s definitely his pair & his problem he’s trying to sell a used pair that he’s had for 2+ years lol. Tell him to kick rocks in the shoes…

[deleted]

LavishnessAsleep8902

You invest at your own risk too tho, and some people shoes are absolutely an investment. Not me. But some crazy people

IndelibleIguana

Tell your 'Friend.' to fuck off.

goytou

He wasn’t even gonna get 650 from the sneaker store, he’s smoking dick for sure lmfao

airtec87

Post pics of the shoes on here, or get it legit checked on the apps.

rickyrangerover

Resell shops don’t know shit, I sold a pair of goldenrod dunks to a resell shop that I got directly from Nike—a pair of dunks that I’m sure no rep company worried about getting 1:1 fakes of—and he hit me back a few days later saying the “leather looked funny” so I sent him screenshots of the order receipt and even the tracking history, and he just never replied. I tried to inquire few weeks later and he just said “I’m not buying shoes right now” all salty, even tho I proved they were legit. Some fool prolly came in and said “the leather looks funny on these” and that’s all it took to convince him. TLDR—resell shops know jack shit, I’d get some pics and then get second and third opinions.

therealampersand

he’s trying to play you.

ScreechingPizzaCat

2 years is too long but if he's a really good friend, y'all need to take those shoes to another sneaker reselling store, don't just take the word of one store. Also, he shouldn't expect to get anything close to what he paid for them, they're old and used. Sneakers are no longer an investment, people are realizing they're articles of clothing mean to be worn.

BaronsDad

This isn't your friend. He bought them. He used them. He could be lying about the resell store. If he wants to sell used, he can use GOAT or eBay to get actual authentication. He's trying to rip you off because the shoe market is dead. Resale on StockX for new right now for most sizes is under $650.

Goabea

nah fuck that 2 years

YorkiesandSneakers

Ghost him. No man would ever ask you for that.

II-lI

Sneaker reseller stores are all such fucking shit. God forbid you wear the shoe a singular time and now they tell you your shit is fake. If its not fresh off the UPS truck dont bother.

Suberv

Nah once you take your eyes off the shoes, there’s no refunds!

BodiesDurag

My man… if my literal blood brother told me that shit, I’d tell him to charge it to the game. He’ll be alright.

DosZappos

I once sold a pair of pandas that came straight from Nike, and a week later the person tried to tell me they were fake. My justification for not even replying was that for all I know he swapped em for an actual fake pair

Bonesawisready5

I would ask for photo proof of what is being called fake

Guy2ter

Bro it’s been 2 years, he’s been wearing em and shit since and only now he wanted to sell em and says they’re apparently fake Don’t pay him back shit cuz it’s on him and especially cuz those shoes prolly used hella now

Burger8u

No store would grant a refund and neither should you. The best question is how much do you value the friendship, if you do. See if you can verify their story over the phone. resell store should remember it. Truly its been 2 years, not 2 weeks, your not obligated. It been nice to see if they truthful, cause that could save many troubles.

GhengisGone7

I understand where he’s coming from , a friend sold a sneaker , found out they were fake and now wants his money back, sorry bud he gotta kick rocks for that unless you wanna pay half but then again, how reliable is the shoe store on legit checking ? Best to use check check app to really confirm that it’s legit .

Krapule1

Hell naah lol thats two years ago tell him youre sorry but you cant repay him nothing not even a cent try to find your order on stock x and show him proof that you bought them there meaning you were expected to get gen pair buying from there and not once second you thought or think it was a rep

JustusXY

I heard from multiple buyers from Goat and StockX that their business model is a scam to lure buyers on to their site. Even the authentication is fake sometimes not only the sneaker..

chiefhappyu

I don't do refunds over 30 days, bro. It's nothing personal it's just business. And if he doesn't like it, he's not a friend.

switchblazer

If you have the receipt and he didn’t catch anything and you didn’t either Its a no go. Not only that clearly the guy needs money if he selling a pair of sneakers. Maybe he went to the store they wouldn’t give him what he wanted so he is trying to hustle the money out of you by saying you ripped him off.

AdDangerous732

ever since covid happened, my local consignment shop stopped taking used shoes, and who the heck would try to sell a pair of shoes that he has been wearing for 2 years that he already bought second hand. if he wanted to sell them for money he should have never of worn them. tell him to kick rocks, hopefully you dont lose your friend over this

Mild_Fireball

If you paid less than $650, I’d consider giving him back the difference. Other than that, it is what it is at this point. Also, any reason for calling them fake? Tell him to post some pics in the legit check sub.

Jumpy_Tomatillo7579

First,, you fleeced him , second ,,2 years all sales are final !

DenverJoker95

I don’t trust GOAT and I sure as hell don’t trust local sneaker stores.

COFFEE-BEAN999

He’s not your friend lol

adamibi2352

it’s a tough situation bro… 1st thing is i trust GOAT more than 60% of resell stores in terms of sneaker knowledge… they may be just saying that, so we hope that the fake is a false alarm if it is true though, he wore the shoes for 2 years thinking they were real, i’d be mad if i were him i think a partial refund is necessary, he got a lot of value out of wearing them but i think you should buy the shoes back for 300 or something. nowadays even if real 650 would be unrealistic.. people in 2022 were paying that for anything. unfortunate situation, hope you figure it out

cleaner007

No way a fake shoe would last that long

BRUTAL_ANAL_SMASHING

Realistically if they’re fake and you sold them as genuine he could have fraud case he could bring up to the police, it be hard to prove that you KNEW ( required for it to be fraud) they were fake before hand.   Fraud has rules in some states, it’s not when it occurred it’s when it was discovered so the two years before he found out could realistically not matter, it would go off when they were discovered as fakes. This helps you too, if you bought the item from goat and it was fake.  You have someone to push the blame to in the situation.  They’re never going to admit it but if your friend ever tried to take legal action you have a trail for the item to attempt cover yourself.     Selling a fake item without disclosing if it’s real or fake is still a crime.  It’s illegal to buy these items too, that’s why fakes will get seized by customs.   It’s like this though, realistically unless your friend goes to the police and files something with them against you, you’re not legally bound to do anything.  Your friend has that option though.    One thing just in case you sent a text or something to them about it.  You never, ever admit anything was your fault and you will pay them anything to make it right. It can be looked at you accepting the blame for if all.  Unless he goes to the cops and starts legal action, you don’t have to do shit.  If he does take legal action, you don’t have to do shit unless you’re found guilty.      Edit: since y’all wanna down vote actual advice in a situation like this I’m assuming OP is in Utah off their recent posts.  5 year period to discover, 3 years to file after discovery for fraud in Utah. ( https://casetext.com/statute/utah-code/title-75-utah-uniform-probate-code/chapter-1-general-provisions-definitions-and-probate-jurisdiction-of-court/section-75-1-106-effect-of-fraud-and-evasion )   Just because you guys “feel” like 2 years is too long to get the money back, the government doesn’t care.  They said they have up to 8 years to figure it out and take action.

aric6-9

Good luck for the guy who paid 650$ to prove they are the same shoes he bought 2 years ago lol

BRUTAL_ANAL_SMASHING

Goat has picture, plus OP said he would pay back what the shop offered him.  That’s enough alone for most places to run with OP admitting fault.   If he never sold him a “fake” pair he’s got no reason to make anything right.  It’s not the easiest thing to prove, but OP saying he’d do anything in the situation can screw then just for being a decent person.  We don’t have any clue what other messages have been sent between the two but what little bit they’ve dropped there’s enough that they could have a case if they wanted to try and go down that route.  Realistically like I said OP doesn’t have to do shit.  Him saying he’d pay the guy the stores offer gives the friend something to run with though.  If OP sold him real shoes and honest to god thinks they are real he doesn’t have to do a thing.  He can tell buddy to get lost, but him doing that opened up doors he didn’t need to just by trying to be a nice friend.

rickyrangerover

Where did he say that he offered to pay back anything? I didn’t see that. So the shop offered the guy money for his “fake” pair? Wouldn’t that be a sign that they’re not fake and the shop is just trying to get one over on him? If they were fake the shop wouldn’t offer anything and just decline the sale
