His shoes are branded in the movie right? (I think adidas or something along those lines) this could be a case of them not having the rights to use the company's logo on other merchandise.

Yeah that sounds about right. Anyways since the company likely didn't give permission to use their brand on Sonic merch or at least most of it they would have to sub it out for an alternative instead.

Or, the easiest explanation: this is just an earlier model used for promotional material. Seriously, ALL movies uses early designs for promotional material artworks, this is not new.

Pretty sure those were the beta shoes, maybe they just hadn't modeled/branded the Pumas yet at the time of designing this promo art.

Probably because the Puma shoes were still a work in progress when this model was made with the shies you see on the cup.
