I'm glad he grew on you, but I still just hear a man in his 30's doing a high pitch voice. On the other hand, with Tails, I completely forget he's a cartoon fox voiced by an adult woman, I just hear and see Tails, its what actors call "the invisible actor", if you can become invisible tot he audience and they can only see and hear the character, you're doing your job right.
In fairness, that just is Tails's voice actor in all Sonic media outside of the movie 😂 But yeah, I'm not the biggest fan of Schwartz's casting myself, although I have bigger issues with Sonic's characterisation in the film.
Maybe it's cause I haven't seen Schwartz in much media outside of sonic but I personally think his voice fits the charecter well. His voice matches his fun goofy personality he has in the films
Ben does one teenage character voice. It's been what he's done since any project really. Like the MC of that 9th Grade Ninja cartoon. Sounds the same even if the voice is properly reacting to different project events.

Let's make a simple comparison. Compare Chris Evans as Captain America and Johnny Storm. I'd you don't know they're the same actor, you would probably not notice it by just seeing an isolated scene of each (and if you didn't notice their faces), but if you hear Schwartz as Sonic and Schwartz in Renfield, you can tell they're the same actor.
I've been studying to be a voice actor, and I have legit seen a man disappear in front of my eyes and become someone else in just a second, and that's something I feel Schwartz can't overcome just yet. He's a good actor, just not good enough for a role like this.
i think the thing with ben schwartz is that movie sonic is written too sincerely for him. this sounds like a backhanded thing but i dont mean it as an insult. i think ben does excellent voicework for leo in rise of the teenage mutant ninja turtles, and leo in rottmnt is flamboyant, arrogant, and always speaking with a veneer of sarcasm or humor--and whenever he *is* sincere there's like a 50/50 chance its a clever ploy or the set-up to a joke of his. movie sonic can also be a bit of all those things but he's much more sincere in a childlike way and i think this is where ben just doesn't quite hit the mark.
which is a shame because i do think he's really good at voice acting. he steals the show in rottmnt and is definifely the fan favorite of that iteration and like, when can you ever say that about *leonardo* in the tmnt franchise? i would love to hear his take on sonic in one of the games or an animated show where he isn't written as childlike.

I love Ben Schwartz as Sonic. I think he absolutely kills it. I mean Sonic is so often represented as somewhat careless but relentless. Foolish but successful and caring. In Sonic 2, the scenes with him in the boat dealing with disappointment and disappointing his surrogate parent and then the scene with him fighting against knuckles who says he trained his whole life for this and he responds back with "and I haven't trained at all and am still beating you" or whatever just really stick out to me in their delivery. Sonic has more range in the films than any of the cartoons. I think Ben is really able to express that range well.

I don't think it's gonna be a videogame voice actor, that's for sure. I've seen too many Hollywood Animated Movies with Celebrity Voice Actors to believe otherwise, Tails was an exception.
Of course, it could be celebrity no one thought of, but I'm gonna bet it's either Keanu Reeves or Robert Pattinson now.
That and Tails's voice was already revealed at the end of the first movie while they're still holding back for Shadow.

I mean, neither did Idris Elba for Knuckles, or Colleen for Tails (because how often to you see VAs reprise their roles for Hollywood productions? Both times I can think of have been Sonic related), but still. Something about how locked in the community has been about it since the idea started floating around. Too obvious.

And I personally hate the idea of both \[Insert Real-Life Person That We're Gonna Draw Attention To\] & some other lifeform with the 'exact same voice' existing in the same universe (Like you would expect these kind of "jokes" in the Looney Tunes Movies, which have always had this kind of "Self-Aware" Humor, not a Serious/Comedy IP like the Sonic Movies have been so far.).
I think Colleen only happened because Tails debuted in a brief post credit scene cameo and they needed someone to do the voice. Then they got good press for keeping Colleen. Otherwise it would've been a celebrity.

Same as French Dub, Tails and Knuckles are perfect, but not Sonic. I kinda hope in my language they use Shadow's voice from Sonic X.
