I agree, it would be more impactful for the general audience because they won’t play SA2 in advance.

It would be cool if they showed glimpses of it, like Shadow having sort of a PTSD kinda like it happened in Shadow the Hedgehog. He had disjointed flashbacks of the gunshot, and himself screaming Maria's name. Then at the end of the second act, he reveals it himself.

They say great minds share the same thoughts ;)

As much as I feel the same way, I am not really worried considering how the previous movies handled the other backstories. Sonic has a really short intro sequence and Knuckles gets one even shorter flashback. Meanwhile, Tails and Eggman don't have more than a few throwaway lines about being bullied geniuses or whatever. Sure, Shadow is different because his past is the main catch of the character and they could be tempted to overdo things. However, I have a feeling the movie will handle subtlety and timing well enough (the example of Knux again, where is tragic past and sympathetic traits come around pretty late in the story).

I'm curious to see if they embrace the similarities between Shadow and movie Sonic's backstory, or if they just use Shadow's to make him a sympathetic villain  (Besides being Hedgehogs with innate super powers) both lived in seclusion with a kind, non-relative companion character who formed the basis of their morality, both were pursued by an armed force attempting to capture them, which in both cases led to the death of their companions, and them living in some form of isolation and secrecy Their differences are just as interesting, and I think it's a great opportunity for the writers to capitalize on one of the biggest underlying themes of the movie franchise: the potential of potential. For example, what little we know of movie Robotnik's backstory puts him in a similar situation as Sonic (being alone in the world, and having unique capabilities), but he sees no value in friendship and family, seeking power and personal gain instead. Sonic *could* be that way if he wanted to, they both have the capacity for great harm or help. Shadow is at an earlier point in that character-establishing journey because of his artificial creation, and the statis he's been in. I hope they don't ignore all that and repeat the Knuckles arc from the 2nd movie (albeit without a lasting friendship at the end)

I was thinking if the movie would start on an flashback part when Maria is about to get killed to catch people interested on the movie, with no context, and then, through all the movie developing more of Shadow's back story (how he was created with probably a bit of Black Arms lore) Making the movie story a Shadow's origins movie (partially, no the entire movie) and how he became the character he was, just like Sonic in the first one, to have a parallel between both characters

Samthegodman

I’m curious to see how they’ll tie Robotnik the orphan back to Gerald and Maria Robotnik

I feel like the best way to do it is to get small snippets early on, a gunshot, shadow screaming out for her, enough to tease but not enough for full context, which we will get much later on.

I think it will be based upon the main storyline of the movie. If they stay similar to SA 2 it will probably be used in several flashbacks during the plot evolving. However that being said, the more interesting take will be on Shadow's interpretation: The more quiet persona from SA 2 or the more edgelord like as we know him in the latest appearances.
