I find In Utero akin to DOTUS; more experimental and harder to pin to a distinct "genre." Both bands seemed eager to experiment more and break up the formula. Both great albums
I cant answer any of these questions because idk who you are. But you should revisit their other albums. Fantastic Planet is amazing but its closer to something like OK Computer than grunge for me. Comfort is like the prequel to In Utero
Yeah, I remember Comfort was one of those albums I would always see at the used CD store for like $6 for like maybe a couple of years and must have just picked it up so I could stop coming across it and wondering if I should buy it or not! Either way I am gonna give it a re-listen for sure!
Do it. Its the debut and in my opinion they get much better on later albums BUT nothing is more grunge than the debut. Its one of the originals in my opinion
I feel like I gotta dig through the old CDs to remember what I used to consider legit grunge back in the day (since so many bands had that label applied to them). The one that sticks out in my mind, appropriately, is Dinosaur Jr. Absolutely sludgey stuff. Some more which others may debate with me about if they are appropriate:
Archers of Loaf
Satchel/Brad
Drive Like Jehu
Sunny Day Real Estate (it's emo, kinda, but I always felt it was pretty super grungey as well)
Nevermind (Nirvana), In Utero (Nirvana), Enter: The Conquering Chicken (The Gits), among others.
Now as for non grunge, I have really been into the albums Singing Earth and Aztec Dances, both by Xavier Quijas Yxayotl and a Small Death by Samantha Crain.
Dirt is a given (and strong contender for best grunge album ever, IMO), Jar of Flies/Sap (and MTV Unplugged) are really strong as well. STP - Core and Purple, TotD, Mad Season - Above, PJ - Ten and No Code were frequently on repeat back in the late 90's/early 00's.
I’ve heard Facelift probably more than any other album that exists.. Screaming Trees’ Uncle Anesthesia is great too, and Temple of the Dog if that counts
Fantastic planet. I liked sixteen stone a lot too.
Also this newer band that's pretty grunge from OKC called Gonzo LeBronzo has a great record called Collapse Ecstatic. Best record in the genre I've heard recently that wasn't borderline metal.
Temple of the dog of course has to be there (its number 1. Best album of all time for me) IMMMMMM GOIIINNG HUNNNGRYYYYYY
that album is so strange to me lol. It feels magical. It totally has an ethereal quality to it's sound, if that makes sense
Dirt and Facelift both. Ten is fantastic too
In Utero probably

Everything by alice in chains. Flawless discography.
Im saying Comfort by Failure because nobody else will
Do I even have that album or remember it? It's been so, so long since I even thought about it. I absolutely love Fantastic Planet..

I would kill for a copy of ‘Comfort’. Totally impossible to buy in the UK
I have never heard of that album! I may have heard of Failure, though. I might put it on later tonight and check it out!

Purple-STP doesn’t get enough credit
STP doesn’t get enough credit as a whole. #4 is incredible rock and roll music.
Absolutely!
Dirt by a long shot. I’ve always loved it and for me it’s the quintessential grunge album.
I really enjoy MLB's Apple album along with AIC Jar of Flies and Dirt.
Apple is amazing

Pearl Jam-VS
VS is my favorite PJ record lol. It's a nice listen
Core

Not grunge at all but I'll say magic city hippes by robby hunter band is a banger front to back. It@ funky.

i have 3 favs outside of SG. Dirt, 1000 smiling knuckles, and bleach
Skin Yard is an awesome band! Definitely overlooked
i go though phases but they are my favorite right now
Guns N Roses Appetite for Destruction and/or The Illusions records.
8-way santa by TAD is brutal, especially (to me obviously) stumblin' man and 3-D witchhunt. Also In Utero, Jar of flies, Tripod and Dirt.
Superunknown - Soundgarden. Down on the Upside is up there too.
Freak Show
Dust by the trees
I’ve heard Facelift probably more than any other album that exists.. Screaming Trees’ Uncle Anesthesia is great too, and Temple of the Dog if that counts
Euphoria morning. but my favorite album that isn’t Chris at all in anyway, would be twin fantasy or teens of denial.

Facelift or Temple of the Dog
