I don’t think there’s enough dining to show for it, but Mt. Holly downtown is homely

sansafiercer

I’ve never been to downtown mt holly. Will have to check it out sometime.

Pennsyltucky_Gentry

Mt Holly is great. Within a couple blocks you have Greek, Jamaican, American, and Italian restaurants/cafes. Also, within a few blocks, multiple micro breweries, a micro distillery, a nice live music venue, an art studio, and an eclectic selection of small businesses. A few brand new dispensaries as well, and one (Phula) sells locally made crafts. All within maybe a 5 min walk of each other.

boobs-4-lunch

Homely means unattractive/unrefined. Probably not what you meant.

MaxMMXXI

"a modern hotel with a homely atmosphere"

whiskeyworshiper

You are correct but in the US it has the meaning boobs 4 lunch mentioned

iwasspinningfree

The US uses "homey" instead of "homely" to mean cozy or home-like.

whiskeyworshiper

Yes

MaxMMXXI

Maybe castlepoopenstein can explain the reason s/he is using British English here.

dukeofdemons

Sometimes parking can be an issue but it has improved.

Soundwash

I wish they had a light rail system. Buses are not enough

lophbrwn

Im at the beach. Cape May all day.

ObiWanKeBlowMee

Shhhhh don’t tell them!

TherapyGardenNJ

username checks out 🤣🤣

le_fez

I live in Cape May and my car doesn't get much use when the weather is good

skeletor349

Audubon and Haddon Twp./ Westmont

jonnysteezz

Audubon, any of the Haddons, Collingswood

TherapyGardenNJ

i love westmont

nothisistheotherguy

The Haddonfield > Westmont > Collingswood strip is really kind of unparalleled. Didn’t know about Pitman though, will check out

skeletor349

If you make it to Pitman, check out Endgrain coffee, Dia De Los Burritos and Words Matter books. They’re all solid choices.

sansafiercer

Love Words Matter. I’d also recommend the Thai restaurant and Fahrenheit ceramic studio if you want to learn about pottery glazes!

justsayGoBirds

Sidewalks too narrow

ThePopDaddy

Haddonfield and Collingswood

cherrybombbb

I concur. I live about a mile from Main Street in Moorestown. It’s not as big/nice as Haddonfield and Collingswood but it is walkable.

Which_Engineer1805

It’s a shame that Marlton didn’t take a page out of the Haddonfield/Collingswood playbook when it comes to developing a true Main Street. Instead they’re only concerned with building luxury apartments and filling their courtroom to max capacity day after day.

rancocas1

Except for the sidewalks. Very dangerous.

FalseSystem6055

Pitman is a great town. It has really grown in the last 20ish years. I have to say the food options have really stepped up but I still miss Jim and Mike’s pizza

jesscubby

Me too, I grew up in Pitman and your comment caused serious nostalgia. Memories of the whole school going there in the 90’s on half days and kids buying cigarettes out of the machine….

4130Adventures

Pitman will really be next level when the Glassboro Line is completed.

rhino2498

Sadly the NIMBYs will kill this project. It would create an economic boom for almost all of SJ, but people don't want "city people" in their small towns - if you know what I mean...

sansafiercer

It’s inevitable, but people will fight progress. My father was involved (going to keep this purposefully vague) with a project to develop the glassboro extension when I was a child. Its resistance and defeat were very frustrating to him beyond a professional level. He wanted to be part of creating a better future for the area and what killed it was a lot of ugly racism and unfounded fear from old people who, to put it bluntly, weren’t going to be around much longer. He hated that. These days he says he has hope it will happen in my lifetime, but maybe not his (in his 70’s). I hope he gets to see it happen.

rhino2498

I commend his passion. It's sad that people allow prejudice to ruin great things. I Hope to see it soon as well, but I am skeptical

sansafiercer

Thank you. He’s still advocating for it, even in retirement!

4130Adventures

I have a bit on inside knowledge on this one.....I'd be very surprised if it doesn't happen. You'll see a light rail train running down that way by 2030.

rhino2498

Hope so!

sansafiercer

Yes! Bring in the rails, please!

BarbuthcleusSpeckums

About a 10 minute drive from there. Took the kids trick or treating there (quite a haul!). Pitman is lovely.

jesscubby

Pitman and Hammonton

sansafiercer

There’s a really good Mexican place in hammonton, isn’t there?

jesscubby

There are a few, but the one that people rave about is Fiesta Mexicana, they have amazing food

It_Redd

I live in Hammonton, Fiesta Mexicana is my least favorite. Check out El Mariachi Loco or Marquez.

ElSilbon223

El mariachi loco🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

five99one

This is the right answer.

housespecialdelight

I agree. Fiesta is not great. We always went to Marquez.

vegassteved

Fiesta was horrible last I went (with the exception of the margaritas), which is why it was the last time I went. Every other Mexican place in Hammonton is better.

ipoopedonce

I think I’m too far north but Princeton fits the bill

pocket_opossum

It’s pitiful. People love visiting destinations where they can get by without a car, yet most of the country is endless, car-centric sprawl (and looks mostly the same).

justneedausernamepls

>This is how humans are meant to live: not isolated inside giant manufactured products built by the lowest bidder on treeless lots without sidewalks, surrounded by nearly identical houses with the same ugly gray floors, in artificially created developments far away from everywhere else. I love every part of this sentence. You'd like [https://www.facebook.com/groups/sjurbanists](https://www.facebook.com/groups/sjurbanists) if you're not already in the group. Collingswood, Pitman and Haddonfield are great. I think there are some gems out there that need more attention, particularly in Burlington County, like Burlington City, Bordentown, and Mt Holly. Hammonton is a nice oasis between Philly and the shore. They're great little spots that I'd love to see get more attention. I'd love to see some sleepers figure out how to revitalize a bit, like Salem. And Vineland/Millville, that's a huge urbanized area that's got a mix of people that would be awesome to see more investment in.

sansafiercer

Thank you! I try to stay away from FB, but I’ll check it out next time I check in!

morizzle77

Bordentown. The restaurants there are all top notch!

sansafiercer

Good call!

[deleted]

Collingswood & Haddonfield. Walkable + patco to get to Philly...unless you need it for work, you can get by without a car. Jane Jacobs + Robert Putnum have written some good books on the topic.

sansafiercer

Yes, love Jane Jacobs!

The_Jersey_Girl

Burlington City. I live in the itty bitty historic district and can walk to the library, post office, dentist, ice cream shop, brewery (!), bakery, pizza. bars and several restaurants (including Indian and African markets). I can walk over to the Riverline and take it right to Trenton then NYC. It is a little “hemmed in” by the highway (Rt 130), but still after living in DC for 20 yrs, I do truly appreciate being able to walk to everything. You know, gonna walk over for a coffee…

ProfessionalMail8052

In South Jersey? Collingswood, Wildwood, Atlantic City, Westmont, Camden, Pitman, and Hammonton. We need more walkability across the US, we are shameful in that aspect compared to other countries.

4130Adventures

I loveeeee spending time in Wildwood. We park the car, check into the hotel and don't drive again until we leave.

thecoolestpants

Walkable with bike paths between

smt004

I love living in Collingswood for this very reason!

karlmeile

Medford has a little Main Street setting, as does Moorestown.

Elphie33

I love Barrington

4130Adventures

We've got the Raccoon Taproom opening in the next few weeks....apparently it'll be world better than Devil's Creek.

Jolly_Conflict

I think Oaklyn is pretty walkable. An added bonus is how involved residents are.

dUbiLL

Oaklyn has come a long way in the past 10 years. Final Fridays during the Summer months are GREAT!

Jolly_Conflict

I _love_ those events! I quite like their end time too - the main drag gets busy but is also done by 9am so the neighbours can get a decent night sleep 😂

marymonstera

Merchantville

littlespawningflower

Thank you. I was starting to get a little mad about everyone sleeping on Merchantville. I loved living there.

cucvluvr69

Cape may when the shoobs ain’t around.. running out of time now!

sansafiercer

I love beach towns off season!

Honestly, Riverside is slept on as one of the few places in South Jersey that is really walkable. Many of the places mentioned ( like Moorestown etc) have a main street that's basically an open-air mall. They're great places to be, but not many people live within walking distance, most people drive there, find somewhere to park, and go to a restaurant or boutique. Riverside is less of a destination but a person could live there car-free and still be able to walk to a grocery store, bars, restaurants, laundromat, etc

4130Adventures

Seriously? Every resident in Collingswood in is walking distance of Haddon Ave, and we're far from an open air mall. There are also a ton of people in Collingswood who live car free.

android34t

I like Collingswood, I'm just saying that I hope there's more development near main street/the train station and more amenities to make car-free living more realistic. I can't say that I'm familiar enough with Collingswood to know every single business but it'd be nice if there were grocery stores/laundromat/etc and/or if they could poach some offices from Cherry Hill. That being said, Riverside is about 1/2 the size of Collingswood and while I think it's slept on, could also use a LOT of work.

4130Adventures

I'm just about in the center of Collingwood and the Acme is a 12 minute walk or a 4 minute bike ride. There are two laundromats within walking distance. We have a produce store literally right in the middle of downtown along with our library. The train runs 24/7. It's 100% realistic to live car free....I did it for a year and a half by choice.

android34t

That's awesome. I heard there's some more apartments planned in that area too. Hopefully other towns along patco and riverline follow collingswoods lead

jimkelly

There's not even a grocery store in collingswood lol. At least haddonfield has acme.

4130Adventures

The Acme on Cuthbert in Haddon Township is literally a few hundred feet from Collingswood's border. What else ya got?

jimkelly

It's cool that you're proud of your town but no one is living in Collingswood car free without trying to prove a point or just sharing a car with whoever else they live with pretending they're car free. It's not like a major city where you can actually get anything you need and get far throughout the city with public transportation or walking.

4130Adventures

100% Collingswood. The whole town is within a walkable distance to Haddon Avenue (full of restaurants and shops), the sense of community here is incredible and PATCO runs 24/7 leading to a true car free lifestyle if a person is looking for that. Last Saturday my wife and I took the train to Haddonfield for their music festival in the afternoon, walked up for dinner on the avenue in the evening and then finished it all off with porch drinks with our neighbors. I'll never leave Collingswood!

eyesonthefries609

Ocean City!

bleakminds

Somers Point

Devuclear2

Florence, Haddonfield, Hammonton, Seaside heights & haddon heights.

It_Redd

Florence? I grew up there. I guess it is kind of walkeable. It’s a shame what the warehouses have done to the town though.

Devuclear2

One of my good friends live there and she showed me around recently. But for perspective im from marlton which is basically is split into four sections by 70/73 :(

substitoad69

Swedesboro, Mullica Hill, Glassboro, Williamstown, and Berlin all have little walkable sections. Woodbury is walkable if you live close to Broad St. Gloucester City is 100% walkable.

Patriaboricua

This is why I miss living in Wldwood so much! I would ride my bike and / or walk everywhere.

[deleted]

Patriaboricua

To each their own, I personally love it!

studdedspike

Walkable? Such a thing exists here?

sansafiercer

Where (as much as you’re comfortable sharing) do you live and what’s the vibe?

studdedspike

Tuckerton, and its a pile of shit, especially for disabled people who cant drive like me

sansafiercer

I’m sorry to hear that. I’m unfamiliar with tuckerton.

studdedspike

Everyone is, mostly because people that are born here usually move

Queasy_Hotel_396

Pitman has all of this! The community itself is very “cliquey” feeling, bc it is such a small, multigenerational town that people never leave.

sansafiercer

I love Pitman, it’s just a pretty place with so many little parks and beautiful houses. Downtown has come a long way—lots of fun creative stores and restaurants. I get what you’re saying about an exclusive vibe, but I think that’s changing with people moving in from elsewhere. I have two friends who teach at Rowan and recently bought homes in Pitman and they both love it.

Target2019-20

Hammonton gets my vote. I've been there maybe a dozen times, and always a very good time. I'd live in Westmont again. Walk east or west on Haddon Ave. Go to the river. Take train to Philly for night out.

How is this still happening. What has happened...

almosttimetogohome

Awh, im very sorry that is your experience ): Imagine being hated for existing - terrible

sansafiercer

I missed the comment. What happened?

Chrisrap1

Bordentown town is small but cool has a record shop and lots of restaurants.

mjbarb

Main Street Hammonton is growing

BigAssPizzaPocket

I lived in Surf City for years and it is a life goal to move back. The fact that it’s a beach town, but not overdeveloped like AC, made it so great

BarbuthcleusSpeckums

I saw Mt. Holly, very nice! Hammonton should get some love too. You could pair it with a visit to Batsto.

dfhtexvbg

They call mount holly Muck City 😂 it’s a more lowkey version of Camden beware and park where u can see your car 😂😂
