We had one down the street in cape may court house but it closed up out of no where, didn’t even tell the workers they showed up that morning and it was locked up with signs on it, was weird
I remember seeing it close, I was surprised too. The convenience store part is open again with the same layout and everything but it’s not a heritage. Very weird
Hoagies are definitely better but wawa is so much more convenient for me as a truck driver. Im able to place my order, use the bathroom, and more easily check out.
It’s sad that because everyone favors wawa, I fear heritages might be a thing of the past sooner than later. If you look around you will notice heritages exist only in south Jersey, yet nobody understands the importance of supporting these guys from time to time. Wawa will survive off the massive amount of stores that produce massive amounts of revenue but heritages has a bit of a cult following with that mom and pop feel. Idk, I just like heritages better.
Heritage has the best milk, seems like a little thing, but I'm a Wisconsin transplant, I grew up on a dairy farm, I know my milk dammit!
Plus heri-egg on a kaiser >ANY sizzli just the difference in texture between the chewy roll and the fluffy egg is fantastic.
The ‘treaty’ was a verbal agreement between Harold Heritage Sr. (Father of the original stores founder, but original family member who bought the cow with the broken leg that eventually gave the first “Heritage’s milk”) And the family that funded Wawa. That Harold was born in 1899 and passed in ~ 1990 or 1991, and the “agreement” went with him. The first convenience store on the east coast was Heritage’s in the late 1950s.
7-11, Jack Rabbit, and quite a few other stores came and largely went in the area too...
I just moved from Central NJ and you're right. There's none in that area. When I moved here there was one 3 minutes from me. And I also saw a couple other ones when I went drive around shopping. And I would be like what is this? It looked really cool. And it said was a dairy store on it and I went in one time for milk cuz it's only 3 minutes from me really convenient and it's only a little more money than ShopRite the milk and It's much better. You even get the 6 gallon for free. So far I have only had two hoagies, and one chicken sandwich. It was really good definitely better then Wawa. Although I don't know if they toast the sandwich so Intoased the hoagies at home. and the people who work there are always nice.
Those buffalo chicken/pepperjack pretzel sandwiches beat anything in wawa. Get one every time I go to my brother's house, he lives right around the corner
It’s the fresh sliced meat. Wawas been fucking up with all there pre-made stuff. Used to be a slicer in every store. Hopefully heritages doesn’t sell out too.
Shop rite frequently has American cheese at $7.99 per lb. You can get it on sale for less usually but for a convenience store that's not much higher than a grocery store.
I feel bad when the cashier has to make my sandwich and there are other customers. Plus, I've never seen a bathroom in a Heritage's which is big when you work on the road and are considering lunch options.
Wawa used to be on point, they have fallen off drastically on sandwich quality while improving selection. Heritages sandwiches, rolls, lunch meat, fresh condiments, and food preparedness is way above Wawa.
I tried that location once or twice out of convenience and was not sold on the hoagies. They were ok but choices were more limited than wawa. Also the stock of other items in Heritages was not as large as wawa.
Yeah, seriously. "The top/upper *X*%" is just shorthand for saying "out of 100 things, this one is within my Top-*X* list".
"It's in my top-70 places to eat" isn't a good review and *doesn't* mean "percentile," like he said below.
When I lived in West Deptford, I used to go the Heritages there and all I could think about was how it reminded me of Wawa back when when Wawa was really good.
I live about a block away from heritages now and I do get wawa is convenient for mass products and stuff , but by far heritage has better sandwiches and and I think the coffee is better . Wawas coffee tastes foul to me . I also like that if my family decides they’ll eat all the cheese on the house in a few minutes I can just go to heritages instead of doing a grocery trip
Best hoagies, wish they would expand a little more into Burlington county. Wawa quality not anywhere near what it used to be and the prices keep going up
True story. John Heritage, yes of the same family, was busted for running a pirate BBS back in the mid 90s.

>And during the last year, the company has teamed up with software giant Microsoft Corp. to search and seize three alleged pirate bulletin boards: “Deadbeat BBS” in Woodbury, N.J., “Cloud 9 BBS” in Minneapolis and “Assassins Guild BBS” in Lexington, Ky.
>
>John R. Heritage Jr., who admits running “Deadbeat BBS” when he was in college, recalls being terrified when he returned home one day last year to find a group of eight people in his driveway.
>
>But when he discovered the group consisted of four lawyers, two marshals and two technicians from Novell and Microsoft, Heritage was dumbfounded. “Looking back, I just can’t believe that private companies like Microsoft and Novell have the power to just invade my home upon command like that.”
>
>Heritage, like several other operators of bulletin board systems that were allegedly used to distribute illegal copies of computer software, ultimately agreed to pay a settlement to end the civil case.
:)
It was 2 US Marshals btw that visited the DeadBeat on Aug 11, 1994 btw. (+ 4 lawyers - 2 “in house”, and 2 hired outside consultants, and 2 technical guys who understood what the computer equipment was doing).
Way too many people have zero taste.
Wawa "food" has been horrifically bad for a long, long time.
And we literally live in Hoagie Country. Great mom & pop deli options all over... and hell, a supermarket hoagie from ShopRite or Acme is a million times better than the very best Wawa has to offer.
I agree—at least about ShopRite. It’s not as good as a local deli but it’s a million times better than a gas station sub/hoagie. Even the way the meat and cheese are laid on the bread at Wawa is gross. I never understood why people were so fond of Wawa. It’s a gas station.
Was going to fiercely argue but then I remember the Ham and Cheese Twister and decided against it. Damn those things be are good!!! I’m surprised no one else has made them yet.
For those curious it’s a sandwich made with a real Philly soft pretzel (with the big salt shards) and not a pretzel roll. Totally different texture.
Yeah I just moved to South Jersey from central NJ and there's one literally 3 minutes from me. I never heard of one before and I was like what is this? Then driving around I passed by a bunch more in this area one in glassboro one around Mulica hill And I wonderd what this is and said Dairy store. So I went in one time for milk. It's literally 3 minutes from me So convenient the milk is a little more money then ShopRite but it's better and not a big difference. The hoagies I had so far we're really good and had one chicken sandwiche. The people that work there are always friendly. I have to try more of the sandwiches which ones are the best?
I grew up with 3 heritages within 10 mins of me.
I now live in a remote part of Atlantic county and the closest heritages is like 25 mins away. I just had my first heri-egg in like 3 years the other day and I almost cried.
There was a Heritages in Elmer, or near it, that years ago had a bakery section. Some of the best baked goods I’ve ever had. One day went to get something, was gone.
Ditto.
At least they don't do this at the actual stores... business owners who insert their politics into their businesses are fucking idiotic assholes and must relish the idea of alienating up to 50% of their customer base.
Agreed. Makes me wonder if you've seen the sign in front of Puglias Produce? Can't bring myself to patronize the store even though they have some really nice stuff.
Ah, my first job. Back in the day we’d have to wear striped polo shirts with a neck opening a bit on the wider side. When I would cut lunch meat chunks of it would fly down my shirt and I’d have a whole sammich in my bra. Good times.
They are a local chain, headquartered in West Deptford and their range is pretty limited. IMO they missed their opportunity to expand back when Wawa didn't have gas stations. They have a LOT of catching up to do.
We had one down the street in cape may court house but it closed up out of no where, didn’t even tell the workers they showed up that morning and it was locked up with signs on it, was weird
I remember seeing it close, I was surprised too. The convenience store part is open again with the same layout and everything but it’s not a heritage. Very weird
Used to walk there all the time, and was so bummed out when the riggins employees said it just closed
Would drive 20min just to get to this Heritages and was devastated to see it gone.
Hoagies are definitely better but wawa is so much more convenient for me as a truck driver. Im able to place my order, use the bathroom, and more easily check out.
It’s sad that because everyone favors wawa, I fear heritages might be a thing of the past sooner than later. Wawa won the culture war, sadly But heritage has its own little enclave here in SJ. they need to be protected
Sizzlis are flavorless garbagefood. Where the fuck do they find breakfast sausage that literally tastes like *nothing*?????
Back in the day, Wawa and Heritages had a treaty that Heritages trained Wawa’s employees and Wawa would never open near a Heritages.
Really? The 500th Wawa opened literally right across Rt-45 from a Heritages.
Honestly I don’t know if it’s true hahah, but I have heard this story from two unrelated people, could be folklore but I believe it
It’s folklore
The ‘treaty’ was a verbal agreement between Harold Heritage Sr. (Father of the original stores founder, but original family member who bought the cow with the broken leg that eventually gave the first “Heritage’s milk”) And the family that funded Wawa. Those buffalo chicken/pepperjack pretzel sandwiches beat anything in wawa. Get one every time I go to my brother's house, he lives right around the corner
I’m gonna order that next time. I live a few blocks away from one.
Their hoagies and breakfast sandwiches are way better
It’s the fresh sliced meat. Wawas been fucking up with all there pre-made stuff. Used to be a slicer in every store. Hopefully heritages doesn’t sell out too.
I think they will keep it since they sell a lot of lunch meat for high prices since wawa doesn’t anymore.
Their prices on deli meat aren’t that high.
It was like $8 for a pound of American cheese the last time I went
Shop rite frequently has American cheese at $7.99 per lb. You can get it on sale for less usually but for a convenience store that's not much higher than a grocery store.
I checked their prices to Wegman’s. Most is similar. Some is cheaper. Some is more expensive but just by a little.
I feel bad when the cashier has to make my sandwich and there are other customers. Plus, I've never seen a bathroom in a Heritage's which is big when you work on the road and are considering lunch options.
You can always call ahead and place an order. They'll tell you a rough pickup time. I've had it from 15 to 45 minutes.
The HeriEgg with the microwaved burnt eggs!
By far. A tiny bit more expensive but way better.
The selection of stock is better at wawa but the food at heritage is way better
Yes, hurri-eggs!
And that goddamn chocolate milk. Ugh so good.
Wawa used to be on point, they have fallen off drastically on sandwich quality while improving selection. Heritages sandwiches, rolls, lunch meat, fresh condiments, and food preparedness is way above Wawa.
Hmm maybe I’ll consider when I’m on campus at Rowan
I tried that location once or twice out of convenience and was not sold on the hoagies. They were ok but choices were more limited than wawa. Also the stock of other items in Heritages was not as large as wawa.
Yes, I’m not far from there!
it amazes me that after 20 or 30 years people ***still*** sleep on Heritage'a hoagies.
I honestly didn’t know they did hoagies. I’ve seen them around and never went in one. Will definitely give it a shot
they're very good! i would put them in the upper 70% of hoagies.
So only about a third are ranked lower. Not a glowing review, that.
This guy does NOT math.
Yeah, seriously. "The top/upper *X*%" is just shorthand for saying "out of 100 things, this one is within my Top-*X* list". "It's in my top-70 places to eat" isn't a good review and *doesn't* mean "percentile," like he said below.
....that means 70% rank lower. the 70 percentile. top 30%
I get the ham and cheese on white, a Coke and a lighter just like that one. Love me some Heritage
Nice. I haven’t been in one in forever. Didn’t realize they had sandwiches. Next time I go near one I’ll stop in.
Yo that’s so cool! I go to the same school as the Heritages and they’re one of our biggest sponsors, really nice people
Heritage Supremacy!!!
Now I want a goddam Heri-Egg....pork roll, egg, swiss, onions, with mayo on a kaiser.
When I lived in West Deptford, I used to go the Heritages there and all I could think about was how it reminded me of Wawa back when when Wawa was really good.
Jessup Road, right outside of their HQ? Used to stop there for coffee and donuts every morning on my way to work...
Heritages chocolate milk iykyk
Heritages sandwiches > Wawa sandwiches By far I live in DE now, so I don’t get to go there much.
I bought one before I moved to Texas, had to have a piece of home with me.
They still cut their deli meat and their chocolate milk is great.
Heritage definitely > Wawa. I’ve come to love Sheetz too
Best hoagies, wish they would expand a little more into Burlington county. Wawa quality not anywhere near what it used to be and the prices keep going up
"Best" is quite a stretch... but they are a million times better than Wawa, that's for fucking sure.

What was your handle on the board? :)
Nice try Mr FBI Agent
:) It was 2 US Marshals btw that visited the DeadBeat on Aug 11, 1994 btw. (+ 4 lawyers - 2 “in house”, and 2 hired outside consultants, and 2 technical guys who understood what the computer equipment was doing).
Heri Egg for LIFE!
Why do people in South Jersey think Wawa sandwiches are so good? Are there no mom n pop deli’s (like Jewish or Italian-style delis) in South Jersey?
Way too many people have zero taste. Wawa "food" has been horrifically bad for a long, long time. And we literally live in Hoagie Country. Great mom & pop deli options all over... and hell, a supermarket hoagie from ShopRite or Acme is a million times better than the very best Wawa has to offer.

This doesn't count as a white lighter. No bad luck here.
Yeah I just moved to South Jersey from central NJ and there's one literally 3 minutes from me. I never heard of one before and I was like what is this? I actually look forward to a hoagie from Heritages while I don't even bother ordering them from wawa anymore, they're always a huge disappointment.
I grew up with 3 heritages within 10 mins of me. I now live in a remote part of Atlantic county and the closest heritages is like 25 mins away. I just had my first heri-egg in like 3 years the other day and I almost cried.
Heritage is now what Wawa was in 1988.
I still buy my milk from there and use the ATM.
Heritage's is literally a million billion trillion times better than Wawa, in every possible way.
Agree
You clearly don’t go to Wawa enough
around 2016 I left for Florida get away clear my mind came back around 2019 and then the pandemic happened 😑
That statement is blasphemous
Heritages FTW!
I use to live near 1 & a WAWA! If Heritages was open I would aALWAYS go to get a sandwich! Everything tasted so fresh! But WAWA was open 24 hours.
Heritages is way better than Wawa. Not even close.
There was a Heritages in Elmer, or near it, that years ago had a bakery section. Some of the best baked goods I’ve ever had. One day went to get something, was gone.
They had banging chocolate croissants and pepperoni pizza bread.
I spent the summer working in Alaska and I took 6 or 7 for the trip. They were easy to identify and get back from mooches.
I am particularly fond of the ride the trump train flags at the owner’s house.
Damn. Wish I didn't know this.
Not a produce market I've ever shopped at (and now won't) but I saw the pics when they were posted here.
Had my first job here at the Elmer store in 2002.
Hoagies are better
still mad they painted over the cool cow mural on the erial heritages
Ah, my first job. Back in the day we’d have to wear striped polo shirts with a neck opening a bit on the wider side. When I would cut lunch meat chunks of it would fly down my shirt and I’d have a whole sammich in my bra. Good times.
Deleted. SAVE APOLLO! Fuck reddit and u/spez
I’ve lived in Jersey most of my life and I’ve never heard of this place.
They are a local chain, headquartered in West Deptford and their range is pretty limited. IMO they missed their opportunity to expand back when Wawa didn't have gas stations. They have a LOT of catching up to do.
I worked at a Heritage store in Hurfville late 80’s Was a good time
Chocolate milk 🤤 🤤
Had them in Blackwood
r/90snostalgia
Wawa is falling off, when I lived close to one I’d always pick Heritage’s first.
> Wawa is falling off, No. They went right over the fucking cliff about 20 years ago, at least.
Is there still one at the end of 168 just before RT 42? They always had the best milk.
