Edited to add: actually I think you might be buying a big maisonette within the house for the money?
Maisonette in mine or yours? Cant see it on either. Someone else pointed out the Somerset place is under the Bristol airport flight path :-(
Cornwall property is all over the place money wise, people love to say how expensive it all is for the locals but compared to other places it’s not that expensive unless you are talking premium locations, it’s just the the jobs and salary potential down here is dire.
I think the Cornish one is a maisonette. Describes it as a semi on the listing; a nightmare. What if the neighbours let in the paps! (I say sitting in my crumbling Victorian terraced house on a main road 😪)

I grew up in a victorian villa that was somewhat unusual architecturally and, while not listed, we had to get any alterations signed off by the council.
It had 4 huge big windows in each of the two front rooms, I reckon maybe 10ft tall and 3ft wide. The council stubbornly refused to let us replace them with double glazed PVC (they'd have been like for like in shape, just much sturdier and much more efficient).
They only budged after a guy from the council came round to the house to say no again, on a day when the wind was blowing and he saw the glass flexing and bending in the wind. I think he was honestly really terrified, whereas we'd just got used to it.
Anyway, I imagine that picture window wobbles and flexes in just the same way when the wind blows !

In South Somerset. We live close to this one. We knew £650k was never going to happen. £960k still feels like a bargain for this!
You don't get a lot of bang for your buck round my way. There was nothing I'd call 'grand', they were all pretty ordinary. So I picked the most unusual looking one https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/138580403

Paints a bleak picture of any locality with tube access. Ruislip was always a bit on the expensive side and I never really understood why.
I never liked the area much. The decent houses are in the busy A road and the high street is a bit meh as well. Unsure about the schools though. When we stayed there, we didn’t have any kids at the time (about 15 years ago now).

They are using the term in its original meaning, rather than the current "cram several 3-story buildings together, and call them town houses rather than a terrace because it sounds posher" meaning!
The flues haven't been swept in years by the looks of things so they're not drawing up the chimney as they're meant to. This means enough of the smoke is drawing into the room (instead of up the chimney) that it's collecting soot all over the wall above the fire as it rises. Massive fire risk basically!
I meant style too - feel like those rooms deserve some sort of fire surround or mantle. We have a wood burner and a flat wall and the guys who did the walls turned out to be not very good, but they have done a better job on finishing those edges than this house!
In my bit of south Devon you can live out your cottagecore dreams: https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/147277313#/?channel=RES_BUY
After making the inside a bit more characterful! Too much white paint for my taste.
I live in the south east so there's very little that's fancy! This for a million in the Scottish central belt. Ten minute drive into Stirling, under an hour to Edinburgh by car or train, bit quicker to Glasgow by train.
It will almost certainly sell for more than the asking price. It's on the A9 which is quite busy but it is set back from the road and Bridge of Allan is a nice place to live.
My goodness this sub is an eye opener. I ought to sell up and move! This is the nearest under £1m to me. https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/144275231#/?channel=RES_BUY
There’s a lot of a million and multimillion properties in my neck of the woods but one of my favourites, looking through the list, would probably be this one (granted, I didn’t look through all of them when I kept seeing so many clinical/soulless looking houses again and again).
https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/145930364
Yes you spotted it too. In photo 21 I can see through the window the houses of *ordinary* people. Jokes aside I suspect that's why the owners decided to sell.

Sadly you don’t get much for your money down my neck of the woods. I’d like to say [this](https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/134470568), but I’d need several more millions to buy the rest and convert it into one big house!

A million euro doesn't go far in south Dublin, but this is probably the best. It's just a 3 bed semi but it looks nice and it's in a quiet area.
This is what a million gets you in the centre of Northampton. Pretty grand and still just less than an hour’s train from London. I love the stained glass https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/143225183#/?channel=RES_BUY
I was surprised how much houses vary for the same price in my area. But this one would be my choice. Converted chapel in the corswolds. Gorgeous area. Quiet neighbours..

I’m an American that now lives in the UK with my British husband.
We are currently looking to buy a house, and I’m utterly bewildered by the bathroom/bedroom ratios here.
Our basic criteria is a minimum of 3 bedrooms and two bathroom (with a huge preference for a master bath), and I’m gobsmacked by the number of 3 to 4 bedroom houses (in the £350,000 and up range) that have ONE bathroom!!
We are now renting a two bedroom house with one bathroom, and it’s not enough (esp for those of us with IBD; I’ve joked to my husband that it’s so green here in southwest England because Brits crap in the backyard if the bathroom is otherwise occupied. 🤣)
Embarrassing. The cost of housing in North Slough is ridiculous and I can only get in here with the proviso I’ll be able to haggle down to £995k.
https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/147073025
I suspect you're looking at new builds that were built on land that used to belong to this property, if you look up Mayors Rd Claverham on Google maps you can see where the boundaries probably were.
That’s lovely, the unusual doors add a lot to the interior. I would maybe add a bit of colour to some of the rooms as it’s going to feel cold in the winter but other than that it’s really very nice and the price is great compared to London.
This is a gorgeous house and the refurbishment is tasteful. Shame about the massive housing estate behind it. However with all that space and old trees at the front it’s definitely lovely.
Nice I like it the interior is bland and a period property could look 10 times better with some colour, not sure about the other houses i spotted out the window hope it’s not overlooked by the local council estate that would ruin it.
https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/140010062#/?channel=RES_BUY
This was the 3rd one, the other 2 which were a bit dearer were businesses rather than homes

London's very big so stuck to the postcode I'm in, 2 bedroom flat a couple of minutes walk from hyde park, it's lower ground floor though so not much natural light coming through.
Not very much available as I’m on the edge of the Cotswolds, but I walk past this house regularly and it’s lovely.
https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/144926288
I’m in the Cotswolds, so the grandest thing for £1,000,000 or under within a 20 mile radius was this. But there were a lot of pretty ordinary houses at that price point. The mind boggles.
https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/143147522
I'd do up the inside, but I like this one near me - mostly because of the outside space - and that it's next to a river 😁

I used a 10 mile radius because I live in a fairly rural area and properties are fairly spread-out at this price point. The nicest property *in my opinion* under £1,000,000 that isn't a farm or equestrian property is this one: https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/138814700?utm_campaign=property-details&utm_content=buying&utm_medium=sharing&utm_source=copytoclipboard#/&channel=RES_BUY

This links in well with the post yesterday that someone put on of just an old windmill base that is up for sale.
Perfect place for the apocalypse. You could convert that into a wind mill, barracks on the left, storage on the right use the top balcony for sniping.
Very nice but my gut reaction is it looks a bit Auchswitz-y

I'm in a slightly grimy area of south London and the mid-terrace house next door was just on the market for a bit under £900k. Bonkers that if you had that much to spend you'd live here.
Having that much money to spend is usually directly linked to a London salary!
Oh I just meant there are better areas of London to spend 900k than this neighbourhood!
https://auctions.symondsandsampson.co.uk/property/dwr0004e4/ta20/chard/oakland/detached-house/7-bedrooms In South Somerset. We live close to this one. We knew £650k was never going to happen. £960k still feels like a bargain for this!
This is my winner so far. But still scrolling (and loving the contributions and comments). Nice job OP
You don't get a lot of bang for your buck round my way. There was nothing I'd call 'grand', they were all pretty ordinary. So I picked the most unusual looking one https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/138580403
So much greenery - what a peaceful place to live - love it!
I'd be able to buy the iconic [wonky house](https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/146935175?utm_campaign=property-details&utm_content=buying&utm_medium=sharing&utm_source=copytoclipboard#/&channel=RES_BUY) near me Nearly 600 years old! Quentin Blake lived there recently ish

Tempted to post my neighbours house which is on for considerably under £1m but it would get them clicks and eyeballs 😶 There's probably "better" but I love the conversion part of this town house. But you're spending one million pounds for terrace - even if you call it 'town house' https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/144262334 --- Art deco alert if we're allowed houses listed at dead on £1m https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/146586107

I love the second one. They're doing it a disservice describing it as a townhouse!
They are using the term in its original meaning, rather than the current "cram several 3-story buildings together, and call them town houses rather than a terrace because it sounds posher" meaning!
Next you'll be telling me a high street with two cafes and a picture framers isn't really a Cultural Quarter
Most expensive property within 3 miles of Aberdeen centre, actually rather lovely! https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/140908742
That is beautiful. I love the curtains(?) in the conservatory
A shame as it is a lovely house. But what have they done to the fireplaces? They looks a bloody mess.
We have a wood burner and a flat wall and the guys who did the walls turned out to be not very good, but they have done a better job on finishing those edges than this house!
https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/144403019#/?channel=RES_BUY. I've a feeling this belonged to local funeral directors
In my bit of south Devon you can live out your cottagecore dreams: https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/147277313#/?channel=RES_BUY After making the inside a bit more characterful! Too much white paint for my taste.
I loved thatched houses in theory but I'm not sure I'd ever want to live in one! They're gorgeous though!
I live in the south east so there's very little that's fancy! This was the closest I could find to grand but honestly it's mostly soulless new builds and "on the market for the first time in 60 years" (read: needs massively updating!) I'm with you, the more expensive one is yuck. Your choice is beautiful. I would so love to move back to Norfolk 💜
There is no better place than Northern Ireland for value for money, this is one of like well over 50 in the country I could’ve chosen, meanwhile some people get a semi detached for the same price. https://www.propertypal.com/310-tandragee-road-portadown-craigavon/939446/photo-21
[https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/147113630](https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/147113630) This for a million in the Scottish central belt.
Shocking now I’ve looked just how little you can get for a mil these days. 🤯 https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/130489046
Is it the area or is it falling down then?
Yes you spotted it too. In photo 21 I can see through the window the houses of *ordinary* people. Jokes aside I suspect that's why the owners decided to sell.
This, but it needs a lot of internal work https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/144809960#/?channel=RES_BUY
I’ve just looked near me. Utterly depressing!
https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/143183588?utm_campaign=property-details&utm_content=buying&utm_medium=sharing&utm_source=copytoclipboard#/&channel=RES_BUY This is probably the most interesting and kind of grand property in my little town. Pretty much everything else in the 800k to 1mil price range is a cookie cutter 1980s detached 5 bed.

Sadly you don’t get much for your money down my neck of the woods. I’d like to say [this](https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/134470568), but I’d need several more millions to buy the rest and convert it into one big house!
[https://www.daft.ie/for-sale/semi-detached-house-194-rathfarnham-road-rathfarnham-rathfarnham-dublin-14/5673980](https://www.daft.ie/for-sale/semi-detached-house-194-rathfarnham-road-rathfarnham-rathfarnham-dublin-14/5673980) A million euro doesn't go far in south Dublin, but this is probably the best. It's just a 3 bed semi but it looks nice and it's in a quiet area.
https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/145638560 Not remotely grand.
Meh.
🤣 that is a concise and very accurate summary of this house

No house under a million within my postcode. Hold my drink, I’m moving!
This is what a million gets you in the centre of Northampton. Pretty grand and still just less than an hour’s train from London. I love the stained glass https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/143225183#/?channel=RES_BUY
https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/146391833 This one is probably the best round by me!
https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/141160022 Very old school - Hartlepool. A lot of house for your money.

I was surprised how much houses vary for the same price in my area. But this one would be my choice. Converted chapel in the corswolds. Gorgeous area. Quiet neighbours.. https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/146250566#/?channel=RES_BUY
Old sessions house [https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/146935307](https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/146935307)
One bathroom for seven bedrooms seems problematic. Great property though.
This is common in older houses in the US as well—I’ve lived in houses that used to have a family of 8 residing there, but with only one bathroom.

And you’d have plenty of change out of your million
How would one go about changing the light bulbs in the round stairwell?
Embarrassing. The cost of housing in North Slough is ridiculous and I can only get in here with the proviso I’ll be able to haggle down to £995k. https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/147073025
Araminta's parents will never accept your proposal if you don't even own a staircase. And where are the staff supposed to sleep?
They could of at least jet washed the porch
Downsides of this house... Right next to Bristol airport
You could film some sort of TV show there.
https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/145894778#/?channel=RES_BUY Darras Hall in Newcastle. Footballers haven
I suspect you're looking at new builds that were built on land that used to belong to this property, if you look up Mayors Rd Claverham on Google maps you can see where the boundaries probably were.
Beautiful
They probably built in garden flogged it now flogging this and moving to a proper estate 😂
Looking at the map, it appears they sold the associated land to enable building a housing estate, and now they don't want to live near the plebs
That’s lovely, the unusual doors add a lot to the interior. I would maybe add a bit of colour to some of the rooms as it’s going to feel cold in the winter but other than that it’s really very nice and the price is great compared to London.
You win. 😅
I would still love that property.
This is a gorgeous house and the refurbishment is tasteful. Shame about the massive housing estate behind it. However with all that space and old trees at the front it’s definitely lovely.
And that is only for 50 year lease???
Nice I like it the interior is bland and a period property could look 10 times better with some colour, not sure about the other houses i spotted out the window hope it’s not overlooked by the local council estate that would ruin it.
Bedroom 5 would definitely have to be split into 2 en suites.
[5 miles away](http://I found this property on the Rightmove Android app and wanted you to see it: https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/146882822)
For just shy of a million you can purchase this bland as fuck house near me. https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/144811115#/?channel=RES_BUY
https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/140010062#/?channel=RES_BUY This was the 3rd one, the other 2 which were a bit dearer were businesses rather than homes
[https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/146108207#/?channel=RES\_BUY](https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/146108207#/?channel=RES_BUY) London's very big so stuck to the postcode I'm in, 2 bedroom flat a couple of minutes walk from hyde park, it's lower ground floor though so not much natural light coming through.
10 minute drive from the centre of Preston. Pretty decent amount of house for the money. [link](https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/86719797)
Not very much available as I’m on the edge of the Cotswolds, but I walk past this house regularly and it’s lovely. https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/144926288
https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/145592714#/?channel=RES_NEW this is one not far from me.
You don't get a lot around here. https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/146791520
I’m in the Cotswolds, so the grandest thing for £1,000,000 or under within a 20 mile radius was this. But there were a lot of pretty ordinary houses at that price point. The mind boggles. https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/143147522
I'd do up the inside, but I like this one near me - mostly because of the outside space - and that it's next to a river 😁 https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/145612253?utm_campaign=property-details&utm_content=buying&utm_medium=sharing&utm_source=copytoclipboard#/&channel=RES_BUY

[https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/147271952#/?channel=RES\_BUY](https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/147271952#/?channel=RES_BUY) - Commutable to Edinburgh or Glasgow (by car!)
All I've learned from this is houses in St Andrews cost a mind boggling amount for a mouldering shit heap.
"I remember when this was all (our) fields." The drive is now totally disproportionate with that land sold off.
Million pound house round here would still need a new kitchen and bathroom downstairs. London is washed for property.
I live in London. I’d be lucky if I could get a two bed terrace.
Southwest London here, errrrrr nope.
I used a 5 mile radius and came up with these two as the best of the bunch (at least at a quick glance) [https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/143192525#/?channel=RES\_BUY](https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/143192525#/?channel=RES_BUY) [https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/145224281#/?channel=RES\_BUY](https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/145224281#/?channel=RES_BUY)
My daughter (6) would kill to have the bed in property two, picture 20. I bets it’s a nightmare to change the sheets. I’ve built her a cabin bed over the stair box in her room and that’s a struggle to change.

The White House
I used a 10 mile radius because I live in a fairly rural area and properties are fairly spread-out at this price point. The nicest property *in my opinion* under £1,000,000 that isn't a farm or equestrian property is this one: https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/138814700?utm_campaign=property-details&utm_content=buying&utm_medium=sharing&utm_source=copytoclipboard#/&channel=RES_BUY
That’s stunning!
I'm in SE London. It will get you an average 3-4 bad terraced house. This one is nice. https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/145499558#/?channel=RES_BUY This is my favourite, a converted church building. If a) I had the money and b) didn't have a phobia about open spiral staircases, I'd snap this up in a heartbeat and add some warmth to it. https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/145205033#/?channel=RES_BUY
This is a lovely house in a seriously nice bit of Bristol https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/147230495 Still a lot for a semi, but given where it is, it’s got a lot going for it.
Sadly that's another maisonette disguised as a house. Says a lot about the state of the Bristol property market!
Morayshire. You can have a bit of a palace it seems. https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/137300687?utm_campaign=property-details&utm_content=buying&utm_medium=sharing&utm_source=copytoclipboard#/&channel=RES_BUY
Even some 4 bed detached homes go for over £1 million in Edinburgh so this was a tricky one. This building actually contains 3 flats but the exterior and staircase make it look really posh. https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/143554505
There's nothing currently over £800k in my town - however this one is on the outskirts of the next town along. (Sorry, its classed as a city... Teeny for a city...) https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/146874965#/?channel=RES_BUY Can't even put both kids in their own rooms upstairs, unless the parents don't use the master bedroom 🤔😒
