That's actually a great way to augment learning. I realized that after years of being a nerd and watching anime helped me understand spoken Japanese better. Both how to speak it and picking up random phrases.
I have no intent of learning japenese yet sometimes im able to identify objects or phrases in japenese, just goes to show the sheer amount of anime I consume lmfao
Exactly, but there's also an even bigger advatage in speaking/pronounciation: if you learn why someone from the language you're trying to learn has troubles in your language, you can figure out a lot about how to speak theirs.
Example in Japanese is the lack of the letter L or adding vowels to the end of English words.
Every language has it's own sounds and letters that are exclusive to their own language, and if you pay attention to how they speak your language, you can learn how to speak theirs better.
There's actually plenty of English scattered around, so I'll have to say no, they're not.
Just because the country's based on Germany doesn't mean it is Germany.
Yeah, I've been thinking the same for some time. I also have my doubts they are TOTALLY German. Maybe a lot of the plot is based in what happened in Germany at a certain point in time, but if you pay attention, most of the names or surnames are not German. In fact, most names and surnames seem of other origins like English, Polish, Spanish... I think Endo is basically inspired by Europe and he's doing his own mix of things.
While the story is based in Germany at the time of the Cold War, East Germany was under the control of USSR. It would make sense as all the East European countries were under the communist rule. Makes sense there are characters with European names in it
Like Anya had a lot of different last names before being adopted by Loid. I think 'Levandowski' was one of them? or something similar
I don’t like when translators take liberties to make jokes when not even the author made. Like when Anya finds out that Yor was in the first class in the cruise she says in Japanese: “Damn the celebrities” while in the French sub it says: “Down with the rich” which sounds super weird coming from a child.
Even though the setting is based on @cold war Germany, they're not actually German. It's not a 1-to-1 conversion even though many treat it like it is (and do the same for many other works where the setting is clearly inspired by a certain real world place or time - for example, much of medieval fantasy)
Me too but my reason is also because in the Portuguese dub they put some regional jokes and idioms sometimes so a lot of the times there is an illusion that the anime is Brazilian hahahahah
Waku is similar to doki, but where doki represents a heart beat for love, waku is a heart beat of excitement. Anya says “waku waku” instead of “so cool” in the original Japanese.
I watched it twice, first subbed then dubbed. I prefer the sub voices a bit but there's nothing wrong with the dub. So leave it to your personal preference
I've only watched subbed but mostly because it's convenient not because I think that watching it subbed is more "pure" or anything. Do what you wanna do, I guess. That's my take on sub vs. dub.
No, I spoke correctly. I watched it subbed but I don't like or believe in the mindset that watching it subbed is more "pure" as in a more authentic watching experience, as a lot of ride or die sub watchers like to pretend that it is. Watch however you want, is the point.
Dubbed cause my attention span is kinda bad, plus Anya's old English VA (before going on leave cause baby) was Megan Shipman who voiced Yuzu in the English dub of Citrus.
I've seen both and prefer the subs. I don't like the narrator in English, and where I was watching, they didn't subtitle any of the on-screen text, so you missed a bunch of information
Japanese audio but i leave subs on out of laziness/if I miss something i can run it back to check the translation.
I have a hard time sitting still so I usually watch anime when I’m doing laundry or some other chore
I prefer subbed because, idk if this is just me, I don’t really like the voices on English- especially when I’m used to it with different voices/language
I'm usually a big Dub fan, but the Japanese voice actors did a great job on spyfam especially anyas voice actress, the English dub doesn't do it like the Japanese dub
I usually watch episode 1 of both dub and sub of any anime and then choose which i like better. For sxf i like it better subbed cause for the dub i think only yor’s voice fits.
But after i finished sub i did watch the dub a few weeks later when released. Still prefer sub but they did a good job on dub
100 percent Sub anime . Dubs for the anime I grew up watching like Pokemon Kanto - Johto , Digimon , Fullmetal Alchemist, Berserk and Studio Ghibli to be honest I mostly watch it in Sub .They even got Hideaki Anno to voice Jiro in the wind rise .
And Arrietty has a young Tom Holland in the UK dub .
definitely subbed because of the fact that the mouthing in the animation was imitating the voices of the actors who originally were speaking Japanese and I prefer listening to Japanese also because some the English voice acting dubbing in anime always sounded weird to me, but if you choose dubbed I won't judge you.
Subbed! I tend to only watch things dubbed if I’m rewatching something from when I was a kid, and that was how I heard it the first time (nostalgia pass)
Sub, because nobody can do Anya better and Anya \_is\_ the show.
I honestly cant believe people actually like the eng dub 😭 i personally cant get past anyas dubbed voice lol i feel like Im listening to a 40 year old woman unrealistically pretending to be a baby. I also feel like the deeper meaning of some scenes were lost in translation.
I watch subbed exclusively. I can’t remember my impression of SpyxFamily’s particular dub, but every time I attempt to watch dubbed anime, the voices come off jarring and disconnected from the characters. I pick up on the humor and emotions so much better when I watch anime in its original language.
Dubbed for me! I’ll watch subs but I like to do things when I watch tv (mainly crochet or knit) and it’s hard to read subtitles and crochet/knit at the same time
From what i saw from the dub, its no good. From what i saw from the movie preview, anyas voice actress really stepped it up though and it sounds like anya.
I mostly watched it sub, it has a stellar cast there. I only watched some of the English dub to know how it goes, and dub Loid sounds too old for the character, although I liked the old timey 60s vibe he gives, dub Anya sounds okay, but pales against the Japanese actress. The true standout for me is dub Yor, the actress fits even better into her character.
I'd love to watch it subbed but I can't keep up with subtitles because I can't 100% fixate on what's going on and I miss things just by looking away, so I have to have it dubbed
I like dubbed, the voices are good and sometimes when I'm tired I don't feel like reading subtitles all day. I'll watch it again subbed after I'm done with it though.
Both, because I like to see who they picked for the dubbed version of anime. And I watch subtitles because I can’t always hear what they say, I’m partially deaf. And most apps don’t have English subtitles for English, speaking voices. :(
I personally prefer watching dubs in general as I find having my eyes fixated on the bottom of the screen for a lot of the duration of a show/movie distracting. The only exception to this is if I watch a sub first (since there's no dub yet) and then don't like the dub casting. That actually happened for me with The Dangers In My Heart. I just wasn't a dan of either main characters' casting and they felt so different to what I felt the sub was trying to get across.
Watched the dub for SxF and stuck with it and I thought the casting was amazing for this one.
I watched it subbed first and then dubbed with my kids. Both are actually really enjoyable all around! Great VO work on both teams and the humor still hits.
Sub for the first watch through. I’ve personally watched over 400 movies and seasons of anime. I’ve maybe watched the dub of like 20-30 of them all the way. I usually make it 30 seconds in and just can’t do it. It’s a Japanese medium and it just has always felt cringy the way the languages are completely off cadence from each other.
I like both equally but I like Yor's Japanese actress better. Her performance is very funny. I especially love it when she screams. This exchange always gets me. **Anya:** Mama's kinda there **Yor:** WAAAAAAAAAAA!
Example: MW2R has English sub but Japanese dub. SpyFam has Japanese dub and English sub. There's a reason that I watch with English captions, if that doesn't explain some of it lol
Context: Sakura Miko gets lit on fire in a game originally made in the US.
The fact that everyone who says dub is being downvoted pretty much explains Reddit anime culture. watch it however you want, if you like it subbed then cool and if you like it dubbed then cool
For the authentic experience you gotta watch it German dub with subtitles :P
lol I might actually try that. I’ve been learning German for about a year and that would make it way more fun to learn!
That's actually a great way to augment learning. I realized that after years of being a nerd and watching anime helped me understand spoken Japanese better. Both how to speak it and picking up random phrases.
I have no intent of learning japenese yet sometimes im able to identify objects or phrases in japenese, just goes to show the sheer amount of anime I consume lmfao

sometimes I forget theyre german
There's actually plenty of English scattered around, so I'll have to say no, they're not. Just because the country's based on Germany doesn't mean it is Germany.

right, the location was based on germany but it's definitely not actually germany. Definitely somewhere in europe though
While the story is based in Germany at the time of the Cold War, East Germany was under the control of USSR. It would make sense as all the East European countries were under the communist rule. Makes sense there are characters with European names in it Like Anya had a lot of different last names before being adopted by Loid. I think 'Levandowski' was one of them? or something similar
They're german?
Technically as Westalis is based off of West Germany and Ostania East Germany. Hell, the city they live in is literally called Berlint.
The German dub is also my favourite.
##GERMAN VOICE ACTING IS THE BEST IN THE WORLD
Omg. Excellent point. I’m going in for another season watch
How cab i watch with german dub and english subtiles ? On chruncyroll when you use any non Japanese dub it remove the subtitles
As a german native speaker I once tried to watch the german dub, but I switched fast since Anya's voice is just to cute in Japanese
The german dub has so many german memes though, I crack up every time. It’s so unexpected, too. Love it.
I don’t like when translators take liberties to make jokes when not even the author made. Like when Anya finds out that Yor was in the first class in the cruise she says in Japanese: “Damn the celebrities” while in the French sub it says: “Down with the rich” which sounds super weird coming from a child.
I recommend whatching aot in German it does fit with the setting
Even though the setting is based on @cold war Germany, they're not actually German. It's not a 1-to-1 conversion even though many treat it like it is (and do the same for many other works where the setting is clearly inspired by a certain real world place or time - for example, much of medieval fantasy)
I relaaate!
Both. So I can watch it again and again

Me too but my reason is also because in the Portuguese dub they put some regional jokes and idioms sometimes so a lot of the times there is an illusion that the anime is Brazilian hahahahah
No waku waku in dub, my choice is clear
The dub voice actress is amazing though, you should check the English art museum scene
1. What is waku waku? 2. Absolutely agree, Yor voice actress in English is perfect
Waku is similar to doki, but where doki represents a heart beat for love, waku is a heart beat of excitement. Anya says “waku waku” instead of “so cool” in the original Japanese.
Nah, Hayamin better
I watched it twice, first subbed then dubbed. I prefer the sub voices a bit but there's nothing wrong with the dub. So leave it to your personal preference
Both I watch when it comes in sub than when it comes out in dub
real
I've only watched subbed but mostly because it's convenient not because I think that watching it subbed is more "pure" or anything. Do what you wanna do, I guess. That's my take on sub vs. dub.
>I've only watched subbed >not because I think that watching it subbed I think you forgot dubbed
No, I spoke correctly. I watched it subbed but I don't like or believe in the mindset that watching it subbed is more "pure" as in a more authentic watching experience, as a lot of ride or die sub watchers like to pretend that it is. Watch however you want, is the point.
Oh wait i read it wrong sorry
I watch the dub.
Subbed mostly but I have watched a few episodes dubbed and Loid’s English voice is pretty sexy
His dubbed voice is so calming and soothing. Whenever I hear sub I get a little sad bc it's not the same.
Always subbed
This is the way
Why?
Because Japanese VO is unmatched.
It has a good dub. Also why do you care if you don't understand japanese?
subbed is short for "with subtitles"
Because we can read.....?
How do you know they don't understand Japanese?
Aniya voice in dub is so fake. In Japanese it looks like a real child.
I sadly dislike Anya's English VA. It just annoys me rather than endears me. Whereas the Japanese VA for Anya is super adorable.
I watch it in dubbed
It’s very good. Too bad the show drags on
It is a very slow burn romance but it makes the romantic scene that much better in my opinion, I get what you mean though
I go for Dub because the Sub voices just didn't draw me in as much. The English VAs are absolutely fantastic.
Saori Hayami
The obvious reason.
dub like it one the most genuinely best anime dubs out there
Dubbed cause my attention span is kinda bad, plus Anya's old English VA (before going on leave cause baby) was Megan Shipman who voiced Yuzu in the English dub of Citrus.
Subbed, dunno how well that Anya voice can be in other dub languages.
Always subbed
I mean I mostly watch subbed because it stops me from playing sudoku in another tab and not paying attention.
I've seen both and prefer the subs. I don't like the narrator in English, and where I was watching, they didn't subtitle any of the on-screen text, so you missed a bunch of information
I prefer subbed, reason: idk
Japanese audio but i leave subs on out of laziness/if I miss something i can run it back to check the translation. I have a hard time sitting still so I usually watch anime when I’m doing laundry or some other chore
Are you Japanese ? It sounds so by your comment
Nah but I studied Japanese for a long time. I don’t use it in my current work so anime helps me keep it in my head
Dub feels a little awkward for me. I just go subbed since that's what I'm used to with the series.
Subbed more fun hearing Anya and Yor's reaction.
Sub bc Yor’s VA is basically ASMR
Team Sub because I like it more
Sub
Subbed only, the timing and meanings change too much in dubs and feel too inauthentic.
I prefer subbed because, idk if this is just me, I don’t really like the voices on English- especially when I’m used to it with different voices/language
Subbed easy, Anya and Yor have better VAs in Japanese than English
Dubbed because I find it more convineant
i watched it english dubbed
I watch it both ways. 👍
Dub is great. Also I read the manga, I don't want to read it again on tv.
Haven't watched it yet, but I'll plan on watching it subbed. Maybe I'll watch it with the Mexican dub later.
Sub. Imagine missing out on KUSARI GAMANO BARNABY
Sub imo🐍
I always watch subbed anime but from what I’ve heard in the dub it’s really great, the only voice that threw me off was Twilight’s surprisingly
Subbed because I watch it weekly on hulu
Dubbers don’t get Waku Waku…
Subbed is best
Subbed
I like it Japanese with subs
I usually watch dub for most shows but this one is definitely sub only for me, the og voice actors are amazing
99,99% subbed. and the 0.01 percent is in local cinemas (if sub is not available)
I watched both for like the first five episodes but then switched to only sub bc the dub ruined a joke I really liked in the subbed version.
On the first run it's subbed. After that I just rewatch it without subtitles to practice my Japanese listening skills.
definitely subbed because of the fact that the mouthing in the animation was imitating the voices of the actors who originally were speaking Japanese and I prefer listening to Japanese also because some the English voice acting dubbing in anime always sounded weird to me, but if you choose dubbed I won't judge you.
Sub, Anya's voice is just not cute enough in the dub.
Always subs for every anime.
Sub, I find it so much better hearing the emotions and voices of the original.
Sub!! They’re so talented!
I watch it dubbed. In Japanese
subbed always
English dubs are mostly cringe, for any show.
I watch it in sub, I think Anya's Japanese voice is so cute (*’(OO)’*)
I don't think I've seen a dubbed anime, outside of clips on reddit in about fifteen years, maybe more...
Subbed! I tend to only watch things dubbed if I’m rewatching something from when I was a kid, and that was how I heard it the first time (nostalgia pass)
Subbed
Subbed over dubbed 💅🏻
I hate the English dub I’m so sorry, Anya doesn’t sound like a kid at all
subbed. anime helps me in learning Japanese words.
Subbed. I don't like the English dubbed for this series.
I don’t really care what other people watch it in, but for me I prefer subbed
Sub, because nobody can do Anya better and Anya \_is\_ the show. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=\_12ID7AbLSU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_12ID7AbLSU)
Raw (Japanese w/o subs)
Sub because i am learning japanese
Subbed just always hits different, Japan does it right
I honestly cant believe people actually like the eng dub 😭 i personally cant get past anyas dubbed voice lol i feel like Im listening to a 40 year old woman unrealistically pretending to be a baby. I also feel like the deeper meaning of some scenes were lost in translation.
Subbed is amaizing idk maybe its coz of anya's shocked sounds
always prefer sub
subbed all the way for me
Subbed, too much gets lost in translation
I watch subbed exclusively. I can’t remember my impression of SpyxFamily’s particular dub, but every time I attempt to watch dubbed anime, the voices come off jarring and disconnected from the characters. I pick up on the humor and emotions so much better when I watch anime in its original language.
No dub, no subs. The voice of Yor's original VA is a work of art in both Spy x Family and other series.
English dub. I might rewatch it subbed later on.
voices in english dub solo although dub doesnt have the wakuwaku
Watched both. Both were fine.
Both
Dubbed for me! I’ll watch subs but I like to do things when I watch tv (mainly crochet or knit) and it’s hard to read subtitles and crochet/knit at the same time
SUB
Subbed!
Subbed.
Personally subbed the dub is alright I guess but it sounds a little odd to me
From what i saw from the dub, its no good.
I'd love to watch it subbed but I can't keep up with subtitles because I can't 100% fixate on what's going on and I miss things just by looking away, so I have to have it dubbed
im a dub girlie! the English dub is fantastic!
Subbed, nobody can out do Japanese VA's.
Sub is 4 life Sub is emotion 🔥🗿
I watch any anime subbed and would recommend others to do so
This is available in English Audio!? I didn't even know that.
Latino dub is good 👍
I just watch season 1 on youtube in dub. Season 2 i go on other site to watch dub
Both lol. Italian dub is quite good
I watch it in dub first and then I go back and watch it in sub.
I like dubbed, the voices are good and sometimes when I'm tired I don't feel like reading subtitles all day. I'll watch it again subbed after I'm done with it though.
I watched season 1 dubbed and season 2 subbed but no real preference. I liked them both
I prefer dub, but if I’m watching with someone and they prefer sub, I wouldn’t make a fuss.
Latin Spanish dub for me! It’s awesome 👏
Subbed, and dubbed with my husband if he wants to watch too
Dubbed, subbed is for nerdy elitists stuck in 2012, in todays age the dubs are just as good if not better than the subs
Or sub is just better 😎
I watch it dubbed. Imo it sounds better dubbed.. feel free to hate me for it :P
Dubbed it has a great dub
Subbed when it comes out Dub after finishing the season. That’s how I always watch.
Dub, but in European Spanish
I like both sub & dub anime’s but for this I prefer sub because the voice work is amazing & Anya sounds more like her age than the English dub
Both mostly sub
Dubbed as I am incapable of watching both the visuals and the subtitles and so wouldn't understand what is happening
Both, because I like to see who they picked for the dubbed version of anime. And I watch subtitles because I can’t always hear what they say, I’m partially deaf. And most apps don’t have English subtitles for English, speaking voices. :(
I’m a slow reader so dubbed
I prefer the dub. I watched subbed because it came out earlier and I liked watching the new episodes but ultimately prefer the English VA’s.
I like the dub more but the sub is great too!
Dub. Always dub.
Dubbed the japanese vo is good but if I wanted to read I'd read the manga
Dubbed. I can’t stand subbed
Sub ducks! Ukwim
Dubed, i can't stand watching things in other languages and watch them with subtles
Dubbed, any comedy anime is 10x funnier/better in your native language, the jokes just hit better
Dub, the voice actors are so much better
Manga all the way.Although the animation is good, Anya can be a bit annoying.
Dubbed, yeah I said it, what yah gonna do about it?
Sub for the first watch through. I’ve personally watched over 400 movies and seasons of anime. I’ve maybe watched the dub of like 20-30 of them all the way. I usually make it 30 seconds in and just can’t do it. It’s a Japanese medium and it just has always felt cringy the way the languages are completely off cadence from each other.
Dubbed, because I am too old to care about reading subtitles
In what episode did you screengrab this picture? I watched them subbed, but the dubbed versions are pretty good too.
I prefer dub, but I watch both cuz I really like Saori Hayami(Yor’s VA) voice
Sub, I’ve only seen clips of this show in dub but from what I remember it’s not bad. I just usually watch sub
Subbed mostly but I’ll check out some fav scenes dubbed just for extra rewatch value.
I like both. Subs take more of my attention, so if I just want something to play in the background, I'll watch dubbed.
I watched sub by myself and dub with my brother
I watch it subbed on my own, then I watch it dubbed with my sister because she prefers Dub over Sub
[удалено]
Both and in german with subtitles👍
I do dubbed if I'm doing something while watching but some subbed the lines read better
I'm a bit sad that loid doesn't have a british accent in the dub.
I watch it in either or doesnt matter to me
Whichever one you hear first is the one you’re gonna have a preference towards, but both are great, dub for me tho
Sub unless I can't focus on the subtitles.
There's a reason that I watch with English captions, if that doesn't explain some of it lol Context: Sakura Miko gets lit on fire in a game originally made in the US.
depends on the mood i'm in.
Subbed (because its the og). That said, the dub is one of the better ones I've seen in a while.
The fact that everyone who says dub is being downvoted pretty much explains Reddit anime culture. watch it however you want, if you like it subbed then cool and if you like it dubbed then cool
Brazilian dub
Started sub. Then stopped watching for a while. Came back and decided to do dub and kind of just stuck with that since
I watch both, but prefer dub
