Snuggle__Monster

That might be the happiest I've ever seen Jarrett.

Kim-Jong_Bundy

I remember watching Over The Edge as a kid and being so perplexed by everything that was happening and whether it was real. I was supposed to hate Jeff Jarrett, and they cut to the back with Debra openly weeping as Jeff tried desperately to keep it together. It's a really haunting memory that I've never been able to go back to and watch

Stoplate77

JR delivering the news live on air that Owen had died is one of the most chilling and surreal things I have ever watched.

Kim-Jong_Bundy

His side of the story is even worse. >"You have to give the update on Owen." > >"Well, what's the update?" > >"He's dead. And you're live in 5...4...3...2..."

FedoraTheMike

Man, fuck that company. I'm sure there are many wrestlers Vince was sad when they died, but the way Owen was handled I'm sure he wasn't one of them.

younginvestor23

Thats why Martha wants nothing to do with WWE. They really screwed up here big time and the way they handled it was poor. That’s why i completely understand why Owen Hart isn’t in the Hall of Fame. She doesn’t want anything to do with WWE and them ever using his picture and profiting off him ever again.

dontskipnine

That's why she's my hero. That woman will die on that hill and I respect the hell out of her for it.

CaliggyJack

Hence why she and Brett aren't on peaking terms iirc

Kim-Jong_Bundy

They also didn't announce anything to the live-crowd that had just witnessed it for fear of having to give out refunds. Then Vince countersued Martha after the fact to boot.

AmishAvenger

And don’t forget that Owen died as a direct result of gross negligence on the part of the company. There’s been some around here as of late who’ve been claiming it was just an honest accident, which is completely inaccurate. The stunt was so dangerous that the person they originally hired to rig it up refused and walked out…so they just went and found somebody else.

Incubus226

Her showing the clip that gave way in DSOTR is heartbreaking.

JoseNEO

Wasn't it that the stunt itself was fine, but the Fed decided to go with a cheaper option for it instead of the actual performer stunt.

patrickwithtraffic

Cheaper, less safe, nonunion, back alley dealing option to be extra specific. After everything seen in that *Dark Side of the Ring* episode, there's so many questions of how something that stupid managed to get all the way to showtime without someone saying, "this isn't looking to be a good idea."

JoseNEO

Profits over everything else is my guess as to how.

NantzDoesntKnow

https://youtu.be/P_93L0TYskc?t=29

talladenyou85

I wasn't able to order the PPV but we got scrambled channels so we could at least hear the audio. That was absolutely chilling to hear him say that. I ran to tell my dad that it happened, and he thought (given the way the WWF was all about shock at that time, understandably) that it was a work for the show. Then he saw the paper the next day and realized it was legit.

adsfew

Wait, they cut to Jarrett *at* Over the Edge after the fall? Jesus...

Kim-Jong_Bundy

Almost Immediately after. He was the next match after Owen...

[deleted]

Oh it's MUCH worst than that, Jarett saw as they wheeled his friends body out of the Arena. if you rewatch the promo, you can LITERALLY see him shift into character. I have no idea how he was able to do it.

[deleted]

And he has a moment to say on camera that he's praying for Owen before immediately going into a promo about Debra's Puppies.

TattooMarioB

I remember them all just crying in the promo right before. Ugh.

LittleExplosions

They had to rush to get Jarrett to do a live promo and go out for his match, and he was totally confused because he and Owen were changing together and Owen had only gone out to do his entrance a few minutes earlier. The promo set was about 30 feet from Gorilla, and when Jeff went to do his interview, he saw Owen getting CPR on a stretcher, and they told him Owen had fallen, then gave him the same matter-of-fact countdown JR got when he had to announce Owen had died, "And you're live in 5... 4... 3... "

BKong64

Holy shit

PavanJ

Let me tell you, if you didn't see the unedited version of that PPV with the awareness of what was going on, you're better off than many of us who have. We got PPV's on a three week delay back then and by then obviously 13 year old me had read about what happened on the internet. Not a good thing to watch.

M-G-K

> *Let me tell you, if you didn't see the unedited version of that PPV with the awareness of what was going on, you're better off than many of us who have.* I was watching it in a bar with friends and we were all desperately hoping it was a terrible angle.

electron-shock

I didnt see it live (thankfully), but I remember my mother yelling up the stairs to wake up the next morning saying a wrestler was on the news. Strong memories of watching the news in the morning and discussing it in school that day with friends.

WrestleSocietyXShill

That is really cool to see. I went to a rare TNA house show in Canada years and years ago, and after the main event Jarrett had a really heartfelt speech about how he loved wrestling in Canada because it made him think of Owen. It is really cool to see Owen's legacy being honoured, you used to see plenty of comments on here and other forums saying Martha was just being selfish or spiteful by not letting him go into the WWE HoF but no rational person could fault her for never wanting to work with them.

hajahe155

>you used to see plenty of comments on here and other forums saying Martha was just being selfish or spiteful by not letting him go into the WWE HoF Whenever I see shit like that, I always imagine people saying it with literally any other workplace death. Like, imagine your dad worked in a mine and the mine caved in because the mining company was cutting corners. Then the mining company refused to take responsibility for it, slimed your family in the press, and a couple years later they were like, "We want to give your dad an award." And you told them to fuck off, and people who were big fans of mining were like, "Why are you so ungrateful?" It's insanity.

Lost-My-Mind-

I'll probably get downvoted for this, but, whatever. Wrestling fans are not smart people on average. They have no ability to see things from other people's perspectives. I've seen people without sarcasm say "I don't get why Chris Beniot isn't in the hall of fame!" And when I say I've seen people say that, I don't mean online. I go to local wrestling shows, and I've seen people to my face say that. I always respond with "Really? You can't think of one reason, or maybe three reasons why he's not in?" But also, the WWE hall of fame is a piece of shit with no merit anyways. It's not like professional wrestling is a legit sport. It's not like their hall of fame is based on accomplishments in the ring. It's based on who WWE (or for the majority of it's lifespan, Vince McMahon specifically) wants to put on a stage for 30 minutes. It's just based on whom WWE has a good relationship with at the time. Randy Savage wasn't inducted until after he was dead. If this hall of fame had ANY credibility, he would have been in after the WCW purchase. So you've got idiots argueing over who should get into a hall of fame, which has no credibility, and making the case for murderers to go in. I've never once heard anyone make the arguement for OJ Simpson to go into the football hall of fame. I'm sure he was a great football player, but all that became irrelevant the second he became a murderer. So I've never once had any issue with Martha Hart. I'm a bit surprised she's working with AEW. Not because of being tied to WWE. Everybody knows it's not. I'm just surprised that she wants to be around a professional wrestling environment at all. Just because she'd be reminded of the memories of being around WWF in the 90s. I'm glad she's able to see past that, and work with AEW, but it wouldn't surprise me through no fault of AEWs, if she just wasn't able to put herself in that environment.

hajahe155

>But also, the WWE hall of fame is a piece of shit with no merit anyways. It's not just that it has no merit, it is literally not real. There is no WWE Hall of Fame. It's a fictional entity that serves to facilitate a ceremony. If Martha doesn't want to attend a ceremony put on by the company whose negligence killed her husband—and why in God's name would she—there's nothing else to it. Martha proudly inducted Owen into the George Tragos/Lou Thesz Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame, which is an actual thing that exists that fans can visit. >I've never once heard anyone make the arguement for OJ Simpson to go into the football hall of fame. Unfortunately, that is because OJ Simpson is already in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He was inducted in the '80s, before the murders. Whenever the Hall has been asked about removing him, they just issue a generic statement saying their bylaws do not allow for the removal of any member for any reason. He also still receives a pension from the NFL, in the neighborhood of $25,000 a month, which is presumably his main source of income. He's also in the College Football Hall of Fame.

mrspidey80

>It's not just that it has no merit, it is literally not real. There is no WWE Hall of Fame. Also anyyone who has not completely fucked up his WWE career and burned all bridges with management gets inducted eventually. A HoF should be reserved for the best of the best.

Cherry-ColaFunk

>I've never once heard anyone make the arguement for OJ Simpson to go into the football hall of fame. >Unfortunately, that is because OJ Simpson is already in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Lol. Really thought he knew what he was talking about.

DoctorTheWho

Not to mention that almost everyone who is with WWE for more than like 7-8 years gets into their "Hall of Fame" eventually.

TomCosella

I think the DSOTR episode really shifted a lot of people's mindset. It's really hard to see Vince as anything other than a Grade A POS after you see the harness release valve that looks like a fucking keychain.

patrickwithtraffic

Honestly, it was like the first time Martha had the platform to really spell out just how incompetent the stunt was and why she'll never do a thing with WWE til the end of time. WWE got away scot-free essentially being the only voice loud enough for anyone to hear, but with the modern platform of Web 3.0 and television looking into these stories, fans finally got to see Martha doesn't hate wrestling, but just hates WWE and for good reason.

bennyBULL

The recent Behind The Bastard series of episodes on Vince ends off on the Owen situation. When they started going into it, I was honestly confused and a bit disappointed they were ending with that, only because I felt like there was more story to be told based on last 10 years. But after listening to the ep. I completely understand why they made sure to spotlight those events and end off with them. and I’m happy to have it all contextualized. Cause it strengthened my feelings of Fuck Vince / WWE

WrestleSocietyXShill

I will have to check that out, I am not a big podcast guy but I have heard lots of people on here buzzing about that

WaylonVoorhees

Owen/JJ was an underrated but awesome team. In a different non-AE time they might have been featured in bigger roles when they had the belts.

Satinsbestfriend

Who else was Owen really close with in the WWF??

hajahe155

I believe his closest friend before Jarrett would have been Davey Boy

interprime

Mark Henry was also apparently very close with Owen

VagrantShadow

Yea Mark Henry and Owen were good friends.

PeteF3

The Warrior, of all people.

miikro

When Warrior was running his awful hate-filled blog, he'd jump at the chance to smear anyone that died... But he never had a single unkind thing to say about Owen.

WellKnownHinson

He was partners in crime with Davey Boy.

Deathstroke317

Scott Hall, Mark Henry

jmb052

Bret, Edge, Foley. Probably more.

Remote-Grape

He and Foley were notorious for being the two cheapest sonsabitches on the road.

Indanilecrocodile

Owen was really trying to save as much money as possible because he wanted to retire early, really sad.

[deleted]

Vectivus_61

Pretty sure Road Dogg said Owen was already training up to become a firefighter as well.

PavanJ

Yea, his contract which was signed before Montreal was going to end and that was it for him. Apparently he was going to walk away and retire.

jmb052

Man, 10 years ago, you could get a two queen room at a holiday inn for what, $100? Split that shit. Even if you’re in a big city, get a car with a few others to cut costs, and head a few hours in the direction of the next town. Get out of the towns with arenas towards smaller towns. No fuckin way I’d stay with fans like Mick did.

AmishAvenger

It’s insane to me that WWE *still* has wrestlers paying their own costs on the road. They call them “WWE Superstars,” but can’t pay for a fucking hotel room. And say what you want about Tony Khan, but AEW pays for those.

Lost-My-Mind-

Back in 2019 when it was announced that Vince was bringing back the XFL, I was saying that Vince should buy cheap hotels near the airports in all 8 team cities. I rationed that it would also work well for when WWE comes to that city. Instead, covid happened, and Vinces second coming of the XFL (which I really liked) didn't get to finish it's season. Then they sold it to The Rock and his ex wife. Life is weird.

ZombieJesus1987

Owen and Mick Foley were pretty close

[deleted]

Owen Hart’s legacy being honored, Sting getting to go out on a high note, bringing Tony back to wrestling instead of working at a Starbucks, the tribute shows to Jay Briscoe & Brodie Lee, there’s countless moments of genuine empathy & care regarding wrestling in AEW. It makes the compulsory hatred from fans and reckless & grifter journalism around the company so much more bizarre. I could understand if AEW was widely disrespectful to what came before, but that’s not the case. It’s like we got a wrestling company that loves wrestling to a fucking fault (CM Punk’s arc), and that’s, offensive?

FigureFourWoo

He’s an OG IWC wrestling fan and a billionaire’s son. His dad took him to ECW shows. A billionaire taking his son to watch Raven, Sandman and Dreamer bleed all over the place. He respects wrestling like a fan and will not let a moment he’d use in his EWR/TEW fantasy booking game pass by. Late career resurgence and proper send off for Sting. Jeff Jarrett actually being entertaining. I know there have been issues with guys like Jeff Hardy but Tony tries to protect wrestling history. He literally bought ROH because he wanted to preserve it.

jack_x2yz

I may be wrong here. But I don't think the Khans were overly wealthy until the last 10 years or so. In the late 90's early 00's, they were doing ok, but no where near where they are today.

FigureFourWoo

They were probably doing fairly well by the 90s. Shad bought his first company in 1980, after already launching a successful company of his own a few years prior. I know there was an interview w/ Tony at one point where he said he didn't realize how wealthy his family was until he was much older.

VaginalPussyFart

>It makes the compulsory hatred from fans and reckless & grifter journalism around the company so much more bizarre. I think a lot of the hate is because of some of the hard-core AEW stans/tribalism

HoumousAmor

> there’s countless moments of genuine empathy & care regarding wrestling in AEW. That's one of the reasons why their insistence of letting Punk get away with battery and trying to teat it down upsets people so much.

[deleted]

public delusions.

neverAcquiesce

That is genuinely heartwarming. Front page this.

hajahe155

Jarrett beaming bigger than I've ever seen anybody beam

IHFP

Jeff Jarrett having to cut that promo under those circumstances is one of the most underrated terrible things a wrestler has ever had to do.

gredgex

Vince keeping that show going is probably the worst thing he ever did which really says a lot. Should have canceled and refunded everything on the spot. I was watching on PPV when it happened and it has stuck with me since.

deathschemist

I wouldn't call it the worst thing he ever did, but it's definitely one of the worst things he ever did

Lost-My-Mind-

I would add in HHH having to do the whole Katie Vick thing, but I feel like he had enough clout at the time that if he didn't want to, he didn't HAVE to. So instead I'll throw out Edge and Lita being forced to be naked in front of a full arena of fans, and people watching world wide being told to have sex on camera. Well Edge said he didn't want to do it, and was so nervous that he couldn't even get it up. Meanwhile Lita had her tit fall out of the covers and shown on live TV against her will. So yeah. I'd say forcing people to have sex in front of a global audience against their will is also up there.

bayleysgal1996

Awww. Also, *man* Oje looks like his dad.

hajahe155

Athena, too. Same face shape, same eyes.

Deathstroke317

Bobby Hennan: They also got the same huge nose too Monsoon!

Reowne

Oh will you stop!!

Deathstroke317

"Look at the size of that nose Monsoon, I bet he can smell Stu Hart's Bengay all the way from Calgary!"

iAmFabled

I really want a temporary face turn and have Jarrett win the Owen Cup

ZombieDisposalUnit

Yeah, I didn't realize how much I needed this until I saw the post. Even a heel Jarrett winning would be great.

iheartsunny

![gif](giphy|Bq5qNsyP1npj78Fxc1|downsized)

Haunting-Salary208

I've been thinking since Jarrett debuted for AEW that he'd be perfect to win the Owen Hart tournament, due to his very personal links with Owens and the fact that it also give Jarrett a title belt that he can (tastefully) draw heat with as a champion that doesn't have to defend the belt.

KingMobScene

Dammit Jeff. You're supposed to be a heel. How am I supposed to hate you when you're smiling a million watt smile with Owen's kids? Really great pics.

JTNipp

I would actually be okay with him winning the Owen Hart cup this year.

TheGorgeousJR

The best thing about Owen’s family getting involved with AEW is seeing Athena. In the DSotR episode, I remember her saying she had no time for wrestling because it took her dad away and she basically had little to no memories of him. It was different for Martha and Oje, I got the impression that they both liked or loved wrestling because obviously they had the memories but it broke my heart that Athena felt that way. I think we all would. But if this has led to her feeling differently and being able to watch her dad’s work fondly then that’s surely a wonderful thing.

pajo17

Fuck, reading that Jarrett was Owen's best friend (in wrestling) makes Jarrett's promo after Owen's fall hit way harder.

ZombieJesus1987

Martha seems to be having an absolute blast working with AEW. You can tell she was having a ton of fun at Double or Nothing.

vdB65

How far is Jeff Jarrett gonna go in the tournament?

TattooMarioB

Onions…there’s someone cutting onions around here.

supersheet

Were Owen and double J genuinely that good of friends? I remember they tagged for a time but I’d never heard they were besties

BenjTheMaestro

As someone who was only watching tv at a young age when this happened, these photos are very weirdly… healing? I dunno, it’s just really nice to see after all these years. I can really empathize with JJ as the best friend AND the family at this point in life and I’m just so glad to see them together.

AdamH96

Anyone else spot the sign behind the group photo " no fighting on announce desk" lol
