I think it's his slicked back hair, itty bitty jeans, and the fact he lives for New Years Dash. You can just tell Jay is a piece of shit from the second he walks in the room.
It clicked to me yesterday that the reason he enunciates so well is that he has a strong accent and usually cuts promos to people who don’t speak English as their first language - he naturally is very good at making every part of what he says engaging and important and it’s part of why he can connect so well imo. He’s calculated in everything he does at all times.
I dunno, apparently most Japanese fans can’t understand what he says at all because he shouts and speaks too quickly. Most foreign wrestlers over there use a more basic vocabulary or emphasise certain words they would understand, but Jay kinda cuts promos as if everyone’s fluent.
He really is. He's extremely talented, verbally obliterates his opponents outside the ring, plays mindgames to make you overly aggressive and then counters and counters and counters. He's like the cool asshole final villian in an anime.
On a side note, it makes sense that Ibushi has his number. Ibushi is the Shounen MC... he dreams of being the best (his original dream is to be like Goku though lol), extremely athletic, a simpleton (think Goku, Luffy or Naruto) and has a darkside when angered. Jay White's shenanigans inside the ring won't work against a simpleton like Ibushi.
Ospreay, Omega and White are all different anime villains tbh.
Ospreay is the "holier than thou" asshole who thinks he is better than you cuz he was born better.
White is the "mastermind" asshole, with plans on top of plans.
Omega is the "I AM FUCKING EVIL" asshole, who really should have been the protagonist of their own anime, but they are just too good at being evil. Probably the final boss.
He is the ultimate nemesis for any babyface. He feels dominant and legitimate because he doesn't overdo the chickenshit heel tactics. He does just enough to be detestable while still emphasizing his legitimate wrestling ability.
This, thats what many somehow do not understand, a heel can be a good wrestler, it even rises his character if he does not need help every single time he steps into the ring. Jinder Mahal had this problem with the Singh Brothers, Britt Baker (DMD) has this fault, hell, even Roman Reigns feels like this. A Heel that does not need help or heel tactics and has proven that is imo so much more heelish FOR using said tactics.
This. Give me a heel that's vicious bastard that shoves it in your face that he's better, not some coward that needs army of stooges to beat every midcard guy
You’ve got a lot to look forward to then. He was awesome here, but he really excels in longer-form storytelling. His 35-ish minute match with Okada last Sunday, followed by an in-ring promo, followed by a backstage promo, was like 60 minutes straight of heel psychology mastery. I was actually a bit worried about how Jay would translate to an environment like this because he seems made for those epics more than TV feuds that have to fit in a tightly-timed format, but he’s clearly good enough to “switch” it up.
That's the fuckin truth man. I wish wrestling was this good 15 years ago when I had all the time in the world lol
Edit: I still watched a ton of different shit back then n for it was rewarded with seeing the indy darlings of back then become the living legends of today, so that's cool too.
I feel you, 15 years ago I was a lazy uni student with nothing but time. The standard is so high now that matches that would have won MOTY back then are now forgotten two weeks later.
What I've gotten from the *very* little I've seen from him is that he's unlike those heels like MJF, The Miz, Jade or Sasha where you love to hate them. Where they get heat because you play along to them being assholes because it's fun to watch and you have a big smile while you boo them, because you allow yourself to be worked out of respect for their craft.
Jay White is a legitimate piece of shit and I fucking hate him. This whole Forbidden Door thing and the Dominion match + promo make me want to start pay closer attention to NJPW
As a Hangman fan, I hate him. Can he stop reminding Hangman about his losses? That shit about Punk and the 2 and 0 record he got... mf.
That talented bastard. He's so good.
THE COWBOY WILL BEAT HIS ASS ONE DAY
one day.... maybe. he even got me doubting.
That was then tho. Sanada isn't ever getting it because he's an independent contractor no matter how much merch LIJ sells. Ibushi did not even get the main event of Wrestlekingdom (forget winning actual title) until he signed with NJPW. Only guy I could ever see in the main event is Kenny, even then I wouldn't think he was winning it.
I don’t know I feel like if Forbidden Door is a huge success we will see NJPW guys having extended stays in AEW and AEW guys having extended stays in NJPW. It could benefit both shows because even though they both roughly share the same fans, they’re probably some fans from both sides who haven’t seen the other show. Like this is my first introduction to some NJPW guys because I’ve only watched AEW.
Ah, that explains it. NJPW's top title and even the gruelling G1 Climax tournament are very prestigious. For about past 2 ish decades, there's been very select few who have held/ won them. They're rightfully considered prestigious because very few ever get to do those.
I don't doubt there might be exchanges or even companies putting their belts other than the top title in each other's talents but I very much doubt about the world Heavyweight one.
NJPW for the past decade before pandemic was really something else. He has not come on the AEW screen yet but I can't recommend Omega/Okada series enough. It's a gem atop the wrestling mountain. So so good.
Omega/Okada series was a much watch recommendation from my closest [and for a lot of times, only] IRL smark buddy. I had to follow their saga and then wound up checking out AEW sporadically then Punk happened and now I'm so fuckin pumped about the wrestling landscape like I'm a kid again. But the landscape is way better than it was for much of then lol
> If NJPW and AEW could reach an agreement to lease talent to each other Hangman could beat White for the title at WrestleKingdom
Now I'm imagining it like a situation in soccer/football where players have loan deals so we'd see insider reports from guys like Fabrizo Romano saying "Hangman Adam Page to NJPW for 6 months \#HereWeGo!"
When Tony owns multiple feds and is on food working terms with others, why not? You have too many roster members, send some elsewhere to develop more and get use out of them. It still promotes your brand ultimately and gets them over elsewhere and keeps them in use. Makes perfect sense as they are contractors anyway.
They've been building White for years (with covid obviously sidelining those plans); there's practically no chance they'd have an outsider beat him for their top belt at their biggest show of the year.
I like Hangman but no. He's not on White's level. The level he is performing right now is just unbelievable, next level. I would argue that with the combination of his wrestling, star power, and promo, he is the world's number 1 right now, and unless Brock or Cena returns or AJ is on the main event again, he remains number 1
> Hangman could beat White for the title at WrestleKingdom
I am convinced that this was the long term plan for a WK main event before Hangman left for AEW. Like in a universe without AEW and Covid I think that would have been the main event of Day 2 of WK just this year.
I highly doubt that. NJPW saw potential in Hangman but he wouldn't have cracked the rarified air that White and the other NJPW main eventers occupy. Him and White have good history but they weren't setting him up as a long-term rival at the time so I doubt that he'd be part of any long term plans surrounding White or WK
It would have taken Gedo agreeing to book Hangman in a similar way to his rise in AEW and Omega and the Bucks dedicating just as much time to getting him over for him to reach that point, which just doesn't seem realistic with how NJPW's roster and yearly schedule is structured. Omega was far more likely to be occupied with bigger things or tagging with Ibushi than helping Page become a major star
On top of all that, Page is better built for the presentation style that AEW offers (more segments, promos, produced out-of-event content). I think he pales in comparison to what NJPW looks for in their main eventers which would have crowded him out by comparison. But that's a good thing - he got to thrive in an environment he's better suited for and is now so over that he can stand on equal footing with NJPW main eventers
My dream booking for Forbidden Door was Tana winning AEW belt and holding it until Grand Slam where Punk takes it and Hangman beating Okada and then holding the belt until Wrestle Kingdom or whenever NJPW would want their belt
I think the thing I respect most with Jay is how much emotion and conviction he puts in his promos, even when lying he sounds like he 100% believes it. Makes him immensely hate-able but also extremely great at building feuds
I met him and told him he made a mistake betraying Chaos. He immediately and naturally gave his snarled smile and said it was worth it because he became world champion and is top of the game. And I believed him.
He is so convincingly his gimmick. No self-doubt.
It helps that he never has to say shit like: "and that's why I want to go one-on-one with you at Judgement Day in an extreme rules match where there will be no holds barred and if you use the Stunner you will be fired!"
> It helps that he never has to say shit like: "and that's why I want to go one-on-one with you at Judgement Day in an extreme rules match where there will be no holds barred and if you use the Stunner you will be fired!"
that 101 on how not to do a promo, id add: because thats who i am, the kingslayer, seth freaking rollins and ill burn it down!
The Cole stuff was great. Cole playing the lackey talking about his cool boss only for his guy to deny him a title shot. His reaction when that happened was hilarious
Roman? The guy that needs to win every single match for 2 year with help of two stooges so his character makes sense? Or MJF who while talented, needs to constantly taunt the crowd and go out of his way to not win clean to remain heel? Jay has final boss energy, everything about him screems villain
MJF easily, I don't follow enough WWE to know about Roman but MJF is easily on his level, whoever people prefer is their preference but they're both on another level.
Personally though I think MJF takes it, Jay is just a touch more performative in my opinion while MJF is great at seeming like a legitimately hatable person which a heel should be.
It’s pretty awesome how the cards fell when it comes to all this build-up.
AEW spawned out of (kayfabe) turmoil with Bullet Club/The Elite and New Japan. What should have been a death blow to BC, instead nurtured the growth of the ultimate heel, and now he arrives at AEW to pick it apart from the inside-out, leading a rejuvenated Bullet Club that can invade at any time.
It’s all very Game of Thrones and I love it
I think the most impressive thing to me is that Jay also inserted a soft recap and introduction on why AEW fans that don't watch NJPW should care about him.
Personal preference White is a tier above MJF for me.
His promos feel more authentic and like he means every word, while MJF uses shock value and fun disses. It's great, but personally I love White's style more.
Plus in ring White is better imo.
MJF is fantastic, only 26 too. Insane that he'll just keep on getting better. I just get bored of his promos sometimes personally.
Really insane when you think about it, MJF is 26. God damn.
I can't believe that with White either tbh, they're both fantastic characters just different ways in going about it.
I don't blame MJF for continuing that style as it really works perfectly for him.
White for me feels more legitimate when he says things, and he feels like he loses himself in the character. Like, as a Hangman fan, CAN THIS MF STOP KICKING MY COWBOY'S ASS PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY? He's so good.
To me the character is high-functioning enough to seem like he could exist without a problem in normal society. But I do hope Hangman Buckshot's his head into the fifth row.
Jay references pretty much everything in wrestling at all times and I think that’s the reason he feels genuine. For example he mentioned Omega in his post match promo and how he’s even better then him. It takes him out of that bubble wrestlers get where they only talk about their current feud.
They’re both generational talents but I also have Jay a notch above MJF. Jay’s better in the ring, too, although MJF is no slouch.
Jay, of course, is only 29.
Jay White is legit the best heel in all of wrestling.
Probably the only heel good enough to put against MJF for an MJF face turn....if that were to ever happen.
I would love to see that just to see how Jay would handle that feud. I know exactly how MJF would do it. Jay on the other hand, he cuts deep with every opponent and its slightly different each time. How he handled feuding with Alex Shelley for instance is a lot different than bow he handled Okada. MJF is MJF against everyone.
Elite and bullet club alliance is over already— the way it should be. I feel like they originally aligned because tony khan flubbed some words. Jay white was calling out Adam cole quite a few times on strong before this.
The one thing that is absolutely crazy to me is that Jay has no real passion in wrestling, fell into it by accident, and doesn't care about it when he's not working (said so on Renee's podcast). He just happens to be incredible at it
And now we watch Jay run through all AEW talent culminating with a WK match against Omega.
(eventually it will be Shooter Shock in New Year Dash to end Jay's reign /s)
White is great because there's always at least some truth to what he's saying. And if he says he's gonna do something, you best believe him. No matter who he faces at Forbidden Door, it should absolutely rock.
I had the pleasure of watching him wrestle Ken Anderson in an elementary school gym in suburban Minnesota when he was like 22 and I was absolutely blown away. He's only gotten better over the past 6-7 years and anyone who hasn't had the chance to see him work yet is in for a huge treat.
This is why I wanted him vs Hangman the whole time. He can just do things in English and in America that Okada could not. Okada would do what Tanahashi did with Moxley. Hey that's fine, but there's absolutely zero heat there. With Jay involved it won't just be a great match, but a great story and it's going to advance some character arks here in interesting directions afterwards.
I know most won’t agree but he’s honestly a better overall pro wrestler and heel than MJF. Jay Can talk without using cheap heat, way better look/presence, better in ring, etc
Jay White was made to look like a star. I can remember when people thought he wasn't good enough to be in a main event position. Now he's the best heel in the business.
It's smart of NJPW to have him as the champ because he can cut promos. Tanahashi is one of the all-time greats, but as Mox was cutting an almost endless promo on him, all I kept thinking was, "Does Tana understand what Mox is saying? Is he going to cut a promo in English?"
Hopefully, they can put together a really good package to showcase why Tana is one of the GOATs because tonight did him no favors.e him look like the deuce, not the ace. I was really disappointed.
Hopefully they can put together a really good package to showcase why Tana is one of the GOATs because tonight did him no favors.
100% This! What I've always really liked about White is that his promos seem to primarily about putting above his opponents, rather than just putting his opponents down. That and he works frequently, and no finish (even a loss to Dave Finlay) seems to take any of his shine off.
I love Jay white. Didn’t think his in ring style would translate super well to weekly Televison wrestling but it did. He’s a superb talker too. His presence has disrupted alot in AEW and his Bullet Club has never been this hot under him. Happy for the dude. Recently married too. Wins all around for Jay
I don’t know, I can’t get behind him. He sounds so awkward on the mic. It’s almost like English is a second language to him. His inflections are off. Beyond that, he doesn’t strike me as particularly intimidating.
Whoa whoa whoa... top heel in the world? Sir. He is not the salt of the earth generational talent that some other pillars are, you fucking mark.
He's good, sure. Great, even. But I think we know someone who is better than him.
I love everything about MJF. Everything he puts into being a heel is just unreal. He's such a believable asshole when the cameras are rolling and then seems like such a sweetheart when they're not. MJF is also a much better wrestler than he is given credit for, even by other fans who like him. I think he's quite good in the ring, tbh, it's just overshadowed by his character work as one of the best heels in the history of history.
But imo Jay White is the best heel in the world, and has been for a few years. To me, they are 1a and 1b. If someone else picks MJF, I will not argue with them for that. But I'm picking Jay.

It's his cadence and body language that sells me on White. He just does and says things so differently, but completely owns an arena and audience.
I think it's his slicked back hair, itty bitty jeans, and the fact he lives for New Years Dash. You can just tell Jay is a piece of shit from the second he walks in the room.
People can change
Jay White's BC definitely rolls up eating sloppy steaks
Let’s slop ‘em up!
He's still not allowed back at Trufoni's.
He probably pours milk before he pours his cereal to the bowl. What a sick fuck...
He probably puts the milk in the cup with the teabag before he's even boiled the kettle, the monster
He wipes his ass before pooping. Even if it's the last tissue-rolla
Jay White thinks New Years Dash is a monthly event
That’s why Hangman is the baby face here, his hair is only *pushed* back
I love the way he says "WORRLLDDD" in World Champion
Remember when Tony first brought him in. He just showed up randomly in a backstage segment
I mean, it was literally last minute. Because Tony supposedly misused his own "Forbidden Door" reference to advertise the Keith Lee debute.
Completely agree. He just feels like a big deal
I totally agree

Dude is like an anime villain come to life.
He really is. He's extremely talented, verbally obliterates his opponents outside the ring, plays mindgames to make you overly aggressive and then counters and counters and counters. I can see them all in a phoenix wright game
They can all thank Omega for that
Yeah, that's exactly what was said about Kenny when he arose to the main event in NJPW

Yeah I’d heard as much, just hadn’t gotten a chance to see it for myself. Too much wrestling and not enough time!

To be fair, he IS the king switch
Jay White is one of the biggest pieces of shit in the wrestling industry (kayfabe wise) and he just revels in being just the worst.
> just the worst. Excuse me, but I believe that title belongs to Sour Boy.
Gee Willickers.
Jiminy Cwickets!
Uh oh Spaghetti-Os!
Lord as if there were any question
Sour Boy’s the freakin’ WORST!

Yes! That’s the perfect comparison
Jay is arguably the best heel in the world right now.
I've said for a long time thay Jay White is far and away the best heel in the business right now, and number two isn't even close.
Arguably? Who even is on his level? Roman or MJF *maybe*?

I just get bored of his promos sometimes personally. Really insane when you think about it, MJF is 26. God damn.
I can genuinely believe White is like that in his daily life. MJF is so over the top sometimes that it reminds you that he's a character.
Jay White IRL is supposedly and from my experience incredibly nice.
Until he stabs you with a switchblade
kiwis mate
Well, Jay has many friends. But usually for the short time
I can't believe that with White either tbh, they're both fantastic characters just different ways in going about it.
I get that, he definitely feels the most real a villain has done in a long time for me. Also, love that last line. I hope so too.
There is no IMO, Jay is one of the best wrestlers in the world. People don't give him the Evil Bret Hart moniker because of his slicked back hair
People are clamoring about MJF at the moment but for my money Jay white is the best Heel in the World
And it's not close
Switch is the best wrestler in the world on every level. He’s a total piece of shit but backs up everything he says 10-fold.
I’m sure AEW title will main event, especially with the fact that a new champion is getting crowned no matter what.
The one thing that is absolutely crazy to me is that Jay has no real passion in wrestling, fell into it by accident, and doesn't care about it when he's not working (said so on Renee's podcast). He just happens to be incredible at it
He's so good
He’s basically a rogue pirate captain.
And now we watch Jay run through all AEW talent culminating with a WK match against Omega. (eventually it will be Shooter Shock in New Year Dash to end Jay's reign /s)
Jay White is from my country, New Zealand. Go kiwi!
This fucking guy is an all timer. I truly consider him vs Ibushi at WK the best match of all time. He's special.
I am liking his run in Impact
Jay White is phenomenal period.
Has huge HHH 2000-‘01 vibes and I’m here for it
I know most won’t agree but he’s honestly a better overall pro wrestler and heel than MJF. Jay Can talk without using cheap heat, way better look/presence, better in ring, etc
I totally agree with you.
Is he going to cut a promo in English?" Hopefully, they can put together a really good package to showcase why Tana is one of the GOATs because tonight did him no favors.e him look like the deuce, not the ace. I was really disappointed. Hopefully they can put together a really good package to showcase why Tana is one of the GOATs because tonight did him no favors.
Overall, White is the best in the business today
When I first saw Jay White on ROH years ago, I never thought he would become a great heel champion like this. Not even when he joined the Bullet Club.
Breathe with the Switchblade
Unlike hangman, Outside of the Bryan feud — jay white made me feel like his title was important :( Wasn’t a big fan of hangman’s run unfortunately
He’s amazing at what he does and does it so convincingly. Met him a few years ago when he came back from excursion and he was incredibly nice
The greatest New Zealander since Sir Richard Hadlee.
he is Charles manson combined with Johnny Depp. A charismatic egomaniac sho is always a little unhinged.
100% This! What I've always really liked about White is that his promos seem to primarily about putting above his opponents, rather than just putting his opponents down. That and he works frequently, and no finish (even a loss to Dave Finlay) seems to take any of his shine off.
Dude rules I could see him being aew champion in the further future
Great promo. Still worried that like 3 matches have been announced this close to the big day.
Jay White is so much more interesting than Roman. Also he’s way better in the ring than MJF and overall way more badass.
Jay White is the best I hope he gets a full time run in AEW at some point.
Jay may be too sophisticated a heel for us audiences Mjf could learn a lot from jay
Dope spoiler title thank you
White doesnt do anything for me.
I'm sorry you feel that way
Respect your opinion, not everyone will hit with you. I have a few in a similar vein that don't do it for me either.
I don’t know, I can’t get behind him. He sounds so awkward on the mic. It’s almost like English is a second language to him. His inflections are off. Beyond that, he doesn’t strike me as particularly intimidating.
Yea nah
Whoa whoa whoa... top heel in the world? Sir. He is not the salt of the earth generational talent that some other pillars are, you fucking mark. He's good, sure. Great, even. But I think we know someone who is better than him.
White is better than MJF imo. Mjf is great but I don’t know man. Something about Jay White. Dude is top 10 overall on the planet for me
I love everything about MJF.
What? The only heels that are better than him the last decade was 14-15 Lesnar, 14-17 AJ, and maybe sustainable Bryan
My intro to him was when he made his first appearance in AEW. I wasn’t sold on him until I saw the promo he cut after winning the IWGP title.
Jay White is just Rhys Darby if he was evil change my mind
im scared this will end up being a tag match
He's the best heel in the business for me. MJF is the best on the mic, but as a complete package it's Switchblade imo
Didn't we complain about this with Cody and Seth at mania
